PREFACE

It is a pleasure to introduce this booklet, which gives a taste of the field of our Industrial Design Engineering programme at the University of Twente.

It presents a cross section of the graduate thesis projects that students have carried out as conclusions of the Master programme. In general the assignments and projects are facilitated by external organisations, under supervision of a researcher of the University of Twente.

WHAT IS INDUSTRIAL DESIGN ENGINEERING? Many products we use today did not exit or were totally different ten years ago. The core competence of industrial engineers is to design, redesign, develop and enhance products for all purposes. This means graduates of Industrial Design Engineering master’s programme have knowledge of many disciplines, including technology, production, marketing, consumer behaviour and aesthetics and know how to integrate these when developing new concepts, products or solutions. Industrial engineers need to be able to take a wide spectrum of factors into account during the production process, including the price of the production process. During the master’s program students gain skills and professional attitude that are needed to prepare them for the future.

THE MASTER PROGRAMME

The Master of Science programme is a two-year programme (120 EC) for students with a BSc in Industrial Design Engineering or a similar programme with equivalent competencies at the same level. The master’s programme enhances and broadens the basis acquired in the bachelor’s programme and enables students to concentrate on one of three specialisations. The programme is academic with the emphasis on design methodologies and problem-solving strategies based on a solid theoretical foundation.

This principle is clearly reflected in the programme; although many courses include design assignments relating to realistic and topical themes, the goal is not only to develop a product but to extend and reinforce students’ understanding of design principles, theoretical concepts and the interactions between products and product development processes.

The master programme has three specializations at the moment.

However, some students, who finished their master programme in 2016, are specialized in the track Architectural Building Components Design Engineering (ABCDE).

The existing three specializations of the master programme are: - Emerging Technology Design (ETD) - Human Technology Relations (HTR) - Management of Product Development (MPR)

ARCHITECTURAL BUILDING COMPONENTS DESIGN ENGINEERING The building industry is changing rapidly. Professional and private clients demand custom-made buildings and their need for building products and components is growing. Suppliers strive to offer many variations in order to deliver tailored solutions. They do this by standardizing and maximizing existing technical solutions, components and manufacturing processes, distribution channels and brands. These new building practises call for new competences and employees who are educated to do the job well.

EMERGING TECHNOLOGY DESIGN The master specialisation Emerging Technology Design (ETD) teaches students how to introduce new technologies into the consumer market instead of introducing a new technology for a single, specific product. In this way technology that is expensive because of its limited field of applicability can become cheap because it is adapted for mass production. On the other hand, consumer products can be modified and or new products can be brought to market because new technologies make it possible to produce new shapes (hydroforming) or cheaper (less parts due to the use of composite materials) or more advanced (fuel cells, reduced sound). Another goal of this specialisation is to decrease the distance between the research environment and hte industry and market.

Within the ETD specialisation there are seven pre defined technology directions in which the student can specialize and finally do the master assignment. There is also a possibility to propose a personal technology direction. The technology directions are: - Biomedical Product Design - Smart Environments and Virtual Reality - Sustainable Technology for Product Development - Products and Surfaces - Advanced Materials Engineering - Product Realization - Structural Dynamics, Acoustics and Control

HUMAN TECHNOLOGY RELATIONS The Master Track Human Technology Relations (HTR) is focused on the exploration and design of products that serves the problems and aspirations of people on an individual, social or societal level.

One can consider Industrial Design Engineering the discipline that makes technology available for users, since a sole technology, like ‘a lab on a chip’ is not graspable for people. In order to solve diseases or monitor blood sugar levels for people that suffer from diabetes, such a technology needs an interface to the world of the patient. In the master track Human Technology Relations, one learns to design this connection between people and technology from a people oriented perspective.

Two insights are central to this objective: At first, the people oriented designer knows the problems, aims, concerns and aspirations of individuals, collectives and societies, and he or she is able to translate these into feasible product design solutions. Secondly, the people oriented designer is able to create beautiful things. Because “attractive things really do work better” (Donald Norman, 2004).

To achieve this, the master track consists of a set of mandatory courses that forms the basis of the people oriented perspective on design engineering.

On top of that, students can choose electives for individual specialization. The mandatory courses all cover the human technology relations from a different angle. Some are focused on society and the cultural context like Science and technology Studies and Design Histories. Other are more related to process of how we should design for people, like Scenario Based Product Design and Interaction Design. Whilst Multi-sensory Design and Design and Emotion are primarily meant to extend the repertoire of the designer to develop meaningful solutions. In the last mandatory course before starting with the master assignment – Create the Future – one has to apply all insights in order to come to a plausible “vision of the future”.

Human Technology Relations Master assignments can be executed external at a company, or any other organization where there is something to be designed that is related to people. This can range from new healthcare technologies to product packaging that stimulates sustainable behaviour. For people that are interested in doing research, an internal graduation project can be chosen that fits to one of the research interests associated with the track. Amongst others these are: Design for Behaviour Change, Participatory Design & Co-Creation, Design History & Culture, Interaction Design & Embodiment, and Design for Brands & Branding.

MANAGEMENT OF PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

When launching new products, it is essential to progress through the product development stages (from product concept to finalized product) quickly and efficiently. In this master specialisation, students learn to effectively manage the product creation process and to communicate with a variety of target groups, both internally and externally (clients and suppliers). Although the product development manager is not alwaus directly involved in a product’s design, he or she needs to be aware of various design techniques in order to adequtely lead multidisciplinary design teams. This may include generating a product development plan, drafting recommendations for the organization of a product’s development, organising a feasibility study and optimizing a product’s life cycle.

ADMISSION

Candidates with a BSc in Industrial Design from the universities of Twente, Eindhoven and Delft automatically qualify for admission.

Candidates with academic qualifications in similar disciplines need to complete a personalized pre-master’s programme worth 30 EC based on experience.

Often, the pre-master’s programme can be included as a minor in a bachelor’s programme.

Candidates with a BSc or equivalent degree from a foreign university can apply through the website, where additional criteria are also described.

Graduates from Dutch HBO institutes qualify for admission after completing the pre-master’s programme, with a study load of 30 EC. Further details about the pre-master’s programme and the admission requirements can be found on the website.

CAREER OPTIONS

In general, graduates hold positions as product developers, designers, product engineers, design managers, usability consultants, brand managers, innovation consultants, etc. Many start their own enterprises. Before the programme became operational, a labour market survey confirmed that there is an urgent need in the Netherlands for engineers with the ability to intergrate the contributions of various experts to produce development processes.

HOW CAN LIGHT IMPROVE WELL-BEING OF PEOPLE WITH A PROFOUND INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY - A DESIGN EXPLORATION Ensuring an acceptable quality of life for individuals with a profound intellectual disability (ID) is a challenge. With a developmental age between 0-2 years, people with profound ID are completely dependent on support from others in almost every aspect of their daily life. Due to the severity of their intellectual disability they are likely to develop insecure attachment, to perceive stress in a frequent, intense and sustained manner and to develop challenging behaviour.

Insights from literature, observations and interviews were captured and validated using experience flow mapping. Based on this research, a design directive was formulated and confirmed by direct support professionals (DSPs). After an iterative design process, a concept was created fitting the design directive. This concept aims to decrease uncertainty at moments in which DSPs are not able to provide certainty and security.

The core of the concept is an interactive lighting device with an anthropomorphic appearance, the behaviour of the lighting device is personalized and DSPs can control the device via an application.

In this way, the system intends to provide a feeling of safety and security through evoking the experience of not being alone.

Due to cuts in health care, organisations like Severinus are not in the position to offer the desired support. Negativism on the use of medication and physical restrains to deal with challenging behaviour makes providing support even more difficult. This and promising effects of light on well-being in normative groups resulted in a collaboration between Severinus and Philips.

Hence, this project was initiated to explore the possibilities of using light to improve well-being of individuals with profound ID.

As a last step in this project, the concept was evaluated with DSPs. This resulted in their endorsement for the concept as well as in useful insights for further research and development.

CREATING A NEW LINE OF SANITARY PRODUCTS FOR FORZALAQUA AND STRENGTHENING THEIR BUSINESS STRUCTURE Forzalaqua is a company that offers exclusive and high quality sanitary products. To create a new design in line with customer wishes and the desired appearance of Forzalaqua, a market research has been done.

Forzalaqua has a business-to-business structure, while the focus during the study Industrial Design Engineering is on a business-to-consumer structure. Therefore an in-depth research is done to better adapt to a business-tobusiness structure. During this research, many improvements for Forzalaqua were revealed, for example improvement of the catalogue, customer segmentation and brand awareness.

A slim-line design was made for smaller bathrooms. For customers that want something special, a semi-recessed design was created that furthermore ensures a low stock. Finally, the stand at a very important business fair has been designed, organized and attended.

The new designed line is ready for production and made of massive natural stone and wood.

The material characteristics have been researched and taken into account. Standardized sizes were used to increase product exposure and make 16

MECHANICAL DESIGN AND PROTOTYPING OF A FOUR-WHEELED VELOMOBILE CONCEPT The assignment is commissioned by Flevobike, a European market leader in e-assisted velomobiles and recumbents. The assignment revolves around their concept of a four-wheeled velomobile that will replace the current three wheeled models.

Having four wheels will increase luggage space, road handling, and stability. The velomobile will be a small, eco-friendly, practical and economical alternative to the second car; going out for groceries, bringing kids to school, and other short trips with limited luggage. This thesis in particular focuses on the mechanical design of the velomobile: the suspension, steering and driveline.

Firstly, the benefits of the extra wheel are researched, including the theoretical increased cornering speed and possibly rider height. A list of basic dimensions and specifications is composed based on the results as a foundation for the design process.The first part of the thesis focuses on designing the different systems. It should be producible by Flevobike but scalable in the near future. Complex parts will be based on the shelf alternatives in order to keep the costs down. The

final design consists of a simplified McPherson suspension system in the front and swing arms with enclosed chain line in the rear, both suspended with standard shock absorbers. The velomobile is e-assisted and has a fully automatic continuous variable transmission system. The pedal distance is adjustable with a quick release, fitting nearly anybody within seconds. The second part is the creation of a fully functional prototype to be able to test the design. All components are gathered or manufactured to complete the subassemblies. A substitute steel frame is created to connect these separate systems. The prototype is then finished by placing the seat, handlebars and wiring everything up. Finally, the prototype is tested in depth for a couple of months, ranging from daily commuting to extreme and abusive runs through the woods. The difference in road handling and stability is huge compared to the current velomobile; it feels solid and reliable but is still easy and light to drive.

DEVELOPMENT OF AN OPEN INNOVATION MODEL SUPPORTING SMALL SCALE OPEN INNOVATION PROJECTS IN THE EARLY STAGES OF DEVELOPMENT Open Innovation Centres are firms which thrive to innovate on projects based on acquisition.

Due to this type of innovation, a large number of unknown factors enter the project selection.

This also leads to managerial and executional challenges when performing such projects.

Therefore, the success rate of these kind of projects might suffer.

generated which helps to select suitable projects and improves management and execution of current and future small scale open innovation projects. Additionally, the model aims to foresee future project problems by using an Early Warning System.

In all likelihood, this method can improve the success rate of small scale open innovation projects in the early stages of development.

However, further research is needed to validate this method.

This presentation entails the development of an Open Innovation Model (OI-model) developed to support in the selection, execution and management of small scale open innovation projects in the early stages of development. A preliminary OI-model is created based on an explorative literature study. Using experiences from a case study, conducted at an Open Innovation Centre, the preliminary OI-model is adjusted and improved to better suite small scale open innovation projects.

ROAD TO RENEWABLE: HOW DO BIO-BASED PLASTICS PERFORM COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL PLASTICS? Danone has had high ambitions for sustainability for decades. In the past years the ambitions have gotten stronger in order to achieve the goal Danone has made: diminish its influence on the environment regarding amongst others the emission of CO2 equivalent particles, water usage, deforestation and land usage. At the moment, the focus is on lowering negative influence, in the future Danone wants to be working on circular models regarding packaging. Their aim for 2020 is: Turn waste into a resource and use packaging materials from sustainable resources. During the assignment at Danone Nutricia I have conducted research into which renewable materials can be interesting for packaging of baby foods and medical nutrition. The results from this research have been used to select materials suitable for an injection moulding trial. During the trial, the materials were assessed on how they run on the injection moulding machine and after the trial the products made by the injection process have been validated on several aspects relevant for

this product. The second deliverable from the project was the design of a material selection tool which makes it easier and faster for designers and project managers to find the correct material for their project. It also provides a (searchable) database for people who need to find information about materials. Furthermore, the tool can help in distributing knowledge over the four divisions of Danone by keeping previously acquired knowledge about materials and their processing accessible in the database.

PROFESSOR REMKO AKKERMAN UNIVERSITY SUPERVISOR ROY VISSER COMPANY THERMOPLASTIC COMPOSITES RESEARCH CENTRE

APPLICATION OF CONTINUOUS FIBRE REINFORCEMENT IN FUSED DEPOSITION MODELLING 3D printing and thermoplastic composite industries are being developed rapidly. For 3D printing an increasing amount of materials is becoming available, these materials also include fibre reinforced materials. The promising applications for 3D printing with continuous fibre reinforced thermoplastic composites are investigated and the potential complications are discussed. The research is performed at the ThermoPlastic composites Research Centre (TPRC).

One of the most frequently occurring complications in both FDM and thermoplastic composites is warpage. Warpage results in deformed products which are useless for further processing or as final products. It is investigated which FDM process parameters are the most influential on warpage behaviour. A warpage experiment is performed varying the build plate temperature, the extruder temperature, the print speed and the layer thickness. The influence of these parameters and parameter interactions is

determined by the use of Design of Experiments.

The warpage experiment showed that the influence of the build plate temperature is most crucial for warpage behaviour in FDM. The potential of FDM with thermoplastic composites is demonstrated by the design and production of a wrist orthosis. 3D scanning is used for the design of the orthosis, in order to demonstrate the customisation possibilities of this process. The orthosis is produced in two subsequent production steps, to profit from the full potential of local fibre reinforcement. In general, orthoses contain a stiff part for support of the joint and a flexible part to distribute the loads to the body evenly. Firstly the tailored shape is 3D printed with non-reinforced polypropylene and secondly the continuous glass fibre reinforcement is 3D printed on this tailored shape. The design and manufacturing of this demonstrator model has led to design and manufacturing guidelines regarding warpage behaviour for FDM 3D printing with thermoplastic (composite) materials.

DESIGN OF A CYBERSECURITY MANAGEMENT INTERFACE FOR NAVAL VESSELS The company Thales offers the Naval Combat Management System Tacticos, which integrates combat related systems on naval vessels (including operator interfaces). Naval vessels are getting more connected and thus are increasingly susceptible to cybersecurity threats. Thales’ goal is to deliver a reliable and safe system. To that end, a cybersecurity interface should be delivered as addition to Tacticos.

maritime environment. It needs to fit with the prospected users and be in line with cybersecurity practices and capabilities.

This has been achieved through an analysis of the maritime environment, of Tacticos and of cybersecurity practices. A profile provides characteristics of the prospected user (including personas) and the context of operation. The functional design details the tasks the user needs to perform and the corresponding functionalities that need to be offered. These functionalities have been substantiated iteratively, through paper and interactive prototypes, and reviewed with a wide range of experts. Recommendations have been provided regarding further development of this interface.

This interface should allow the maritime crew to manage the IT security situation, providing an overview with regard to the current situation and allow prevention, detection, correction and recovery from cyber threats. Current commercially available tools are not sufficiently applicable for the maritime environment, due to the crew’s relatively limited security expertise and the technical interface of current tools.

The purpose of this graduation project is to design a cybersecurity interface which is tailored to the 26

THE DESIGN OF A BOARD GAME THAT SUPPORTS ITS PARTICIPANTS IN THE COOPERATIVE DESIGN PROCESS OF EDUCATIONAL GAME CONCEPTS Luqo is a start-up by UT IDE alumnus Rogier Kauw-A-Tjoe. The company is creating a new educational gaming platform that combines physical board games with interactive projections.

The setup consists of a computer, a projector and a camera. Custom computer vision software detects the physical game pieces and digital game content is projected on the game board.

This setup gives an interesting user experience.

It enables all the positive group interactions of traditional board games and enriches those with the ease of use and automation of digital games.

This research focuses on the design of educational game concepts. It elaborates on aspects of good educational games and how these are to be created. The main problems in the development of educational games were identified as a lack in structure in the early stages of the design process and miscommunication between game designers and educational experts.

A serious board game has been developed to structure the design process, aid in developing and selecting new ideas, inform on best practises of educational games and to improve communication between participants.

A FRAMEWORK FOR EXPRESSING AND CARRYING OUT INFOTOPICS Infotopics started as a company providing management information concepts for the education branch. The core business of Infotopics is helping people and organisations to make their data valuable by making them see, understand and act on it. The mission was providing management reports and dashboards with the smallest possible amount of IT involvement. Nowadays Infotopics is successful on many different markets using Tableau and Alteryx as analytical platforms as they suit Infotopics by being focused on the business user.

Infotopics express themselves? How can the added value of the service of Infotopics be carried out to different customers?

During this research a framework was developed in order to approach an answer towards those questions. Tools and methods supporting the employees with the development of touch points: interactions between Infotopics and its customers.

Due to the ever growing interest in big data and analytics, the market is more competitive today.

Infotopics was a pioneer in reselling Tableau and Alteryx but the passion for visual analytics always had the focus. It’s desired to avoid Infotopics will be seen as a platform reseller. How should

INFENTO ROBOTICS DESIGN OF A ROBOTICS EXPANSION PACK BASED ON INFENTO’S MODULAR CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL In this master thesis, a robotics expansion pack is presented that works in unison with the modular construction materials the company Infento has on offer. These construction materials consist of aluminium profiles and reinforced plastic joints which can be used to build life size creations like a pedal kart. Education has grown into a prime market for Infento and adding robotics to the lineup adds a new dimension to the current product offering. Infento Robotics is primarily targeted at technical education of the age group of twelve and upwards. There is a real need in the market for enticing learning materials for technical education.

To cater for this need, a robot extension pack for the Infento system has been developed. In order to evaluate the system the different concepts and designs have been implemented in accurate prototypes that stay close to the final design.

Insights that have been gained during the creation of the prototype are presented on a component level. Ultimately, two showcases are presented that explore what an Infento Robotics creation could be like and how people react to it.

PROFESSOR FRED VAN HOUTEN UNIVERSITY SUPERVISOR ANGĂˆLE REINDERS COMPANY HYET SOLAR (IN COLLABORATION WITH O&H CONCEPTS)

INTEGRATION OF FLEXIBLE SOLAR PANELS ON THE ROOFS OF INFLATABLE REFUGEE TENTS In this master project, new product applications have been explored for flexible thin film solar panels using various design approaches leading to a final design of an autonomously solarpowered inflatable refugee tent. In this project two companies were involved, namely a manufacturer of flexible thin film solar panels, called HyET Solar, in Arnhem, and the other, O&H Concepts in Hengelo, which produces inflatable shelter tents. Up to now flexible solar panels have mainly been installed on roofs which are unable to bear the weight of glass-based solar panels. However, this market is dominated by the technology of crystalline silicon solar panels which at present are significantly cheaper than flexible, amorphous silicon based solar panels. Therefore, in this project areas of possible new applications of flexible thin film solar modules have been evaluated, where the added value of flexible solar panels, such as light weight and flexibility, compensates for their higher price. For this purpose, various innovative design methods have been applied such as Platform Driven Product Development, Innovative Design

and Styling and TRIZ supporting an integrated process at the edge of product development and sustainable energy technologies such as solar photovoltaics. As a suitable application inflatable refugee tents have been identified. Within this context a packaging and reinforcement system for the panels have been developed and a feasibility study has been executed to proof the feasibility of the area of application. Finally, a prototype has been made based on the results of the design process to proof the present concept and enable further testing. Through the application of lightweight and flexible panels the structure of the tent needs to bare less weight than expected therefore less material is needed for the tent and its weight can be reduced, too. This leads to an increased usability of the tent and less costs. Furthermore, the feasibility study showed that the energy demand in emergency situations can be fulfilled by solar energy only, if the system is kept modular to meet the individual needs of the customer, and that the added value of the solar panels can compensate for higher initial investments.

VALUE-BASED FEASIBILITY: CASE STUDY ON A CAR INTERIOR Several worldwide established product design methods have been developed in order to guide designers, typically starting with requirements or constraints, leading to solutions or concepts. It is quite common in industry and education to aim for either quality, low-cost or high value for money during a design process. But what if it is suspected that a solution within the given constraints does not exist? As there theoretically exist an infinite number of possible designs solutions, this assumption is hard to prove. A generic, exploratory, value-based method is composed that enables the composition of concepts that describe the boundaries of the solution space in terms of customer satisfaction and cost for a given set of constraints. Three concepts mark out the hypothetical boundaries of the solution space: a customer satisfaction-driven, cost-driven and a value-driven concept. The purpose of the method is to investigate whether the solution space and the required solution overlap. As an addition, the method provides insight into the effect that changing one or more constraints has on the

solution space. The method is applied in a case study on a car interior. gCab was a taxi company that distinguished itself in the market using electric micro cars. This made their services relatively cheap and less polluting. The company decided to develop a vehicle itself because of dissatisfaction with their purchased micro cars. A couple of constraints had to be respected, such as a batch size of twenty, production in the Netherlands and the use of custom-made molded parts. Prices for the car should start from â‚Ź 6500 excl. batteries and the budget for the interior was defined at â‚Ź 1400. The design of this interior was taken as a case for applying the method developed. The conclusion of the case is that it is unlikely that the relatively low budget for the interior will be met with the given constraints. Even after the removal of some expensive constraints it does not seem likely that the solution space will overlap with the required product. Although the method was supporting in the task of exploring the solution space, it is hard to measure or quantify the effect of the support, and to validate the conclusion.

SUPPORTING SUSTAINABILITY INTEGRATION IN A PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT PROCESS THROUGH A CLIENT-CONSULTANT COOPERATION This research focused on consultancy firms like ‘Partners for Innovation’, that supports clients in product innovation, optimizing processes and implementing circular business models and design strategies. During the research project, the role and involvement of design consultants in sustainable innovation processes have been observed. As also is described in literature; consultants experience difficulties in packaging their knowledge and transferring this knowledge towards clients to provide long-lasting advantages for the client.

The research focuses on how design consultants can guide a support process at clients in the pursuit towards sustainability integration in the product development process. It attempts to answer the question: “How can design consultants efficiently (in a practical manner) and effectively (focused on a clear outcome) guide a process towards an integrated sustainable product development process at a client?”.

As a result, a conceptual framework has been developed which guides consultants through several identified stages that present in a clientconsultant cooperation. Consisting of an entry phase to align the expectations and clarify the role of the consultant, an inventory phase to gain insight into the relevant processes at the client, and an action plan phase in which elements are proposed that can support the selection of actions that stroke with the client’s needs, capabilities and potential.

The proposed conceptual framework is evaluated on three retrospective case studies based on previous experiences. These case studies were part of a project on the development of design guidelines for the integration of recycled plastics in injection-molded products. Six leading Dutch companies from the manufacturing industry which already have successfully integrated recycled plastics in their products participated.

LIFE CYCLE ENGINEERING IN THE CIRCULAR ECONOMY: THE PERSPECTIVE OF A CIRCULAR BOILER The circular economy is an emerging paradigm with an emphasis on resource conservation and value creation through sustainable development.

Driven by success stories and its positive message, it has received a considerable amount of publicity over the last few years. Both Remeha, a boiler manufacturer and Van Gerrevink, a recycling company, have recognised the potential of working together by creating a circular economy for Remeha’s products. This thesis investigates the opportunities that this unique collaboration allows.

However, the circular economy remains a relatively young paradigm and its effective relation with sustainability continues to be a much debated subject of discussion. The novelty of the circular economy, combined with the apparent ambiguity of sustainability, make the generation and assessment of these circular opportunities into a complex challenge. In order to assess the feasibility and sustainability of the proposals, the

entire product lifecycle needs to be considered.

To this end, a framework based on General Morphological Analysis is proposed that combines the approach of Life Cycle Engineering with the principles from the circular economy.

This framework was applied to the case study of the collaboration between Remeha and Van Gerrevink. The collaboration serves as an evaluation case for the framework as well as a demonstration of its intended application. Using the framework, a number of opportunities for sustainable development were generated, most notably the retrieval of old boilers, their optimal recycling and the subsequent reutilisation of the reclaimed materials in the production of new boilers.

ASSESSING THE APPROPRIATENESS OF ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING The hype around additive manufacturing (AM) has caused major interest of companies in a diverse range of sectors. Currently, many companies are evaluating the possibilities of using this upcoming manufacturing technology but do not have a clear overview of the impact and possibilities.

Companies are not able to translate them into tangible outcomes because they do not have the knowledge or mindset to find appropriate solutions that solves their problems. However, organisations cannot afford to lean backwards, if so they might miss out and do not recognise possible AM benefits that create competitive advantage. In a future where integrated digital technologies like AM become a part of the value chain, organisation should start assessing the appropriateness for integrating AM in their development and production processes. Capgemini is currently exploring upcoming technologies and how they should be applied to gain competitive advantage for their clients. To reach this goal they collaborate with clients and offer them insight and create

awareness to use this technology in a targeted manner. One of the technologies Capgemini is interested in and of which they think it will offer a competitive advantage is AM. The goal is that Capgemini consultants become more experienced in identifying the appropriate opportunities and together with clients are able to assess the impacts of using AM. In order to meet these knowledge needs, this research focuses on developing a methodology which supports consultants in the assessment of the appropriateness when to use AM inside the client organisation. This process is assisted by a decision support system with a knowledge base to provide expert knowledge. The assessment consists of multiple levels of which each level includes different methods from the initial stages towards the technical alternatives and possible future scenarios. With this methodology consultants are better able to identify the knowledge gap and structure the appropriateness assessment of possible AM applications.

SELECTIVE LASER SINTERING OF POLYMERS - ENABLING PROCESS AND CONTROL AND PART PROPERTY PREDICTION Selective laser sintering (SLS) is an additive manufacturing technique that enables the production of customized, complex products.

During the past years, SLS of polymers has proven itself as a viable prototyping tool and production method for customized, non-critical products (e.g. figurines, phone cases, jewellery). The industry has picked up on the potential of SLS, which raised the question whether it is possible to produce functional products with reproducible mechanical properties for application in critical sectors such as the biomedical, automobile and aerospace industry.

The properties of SLS parts highly depend on the applied process settings. Hence, present work examined the influence of key process parameters (preheating temperature, laser power, scan spacing, scan speed, layer thickness and part build orientation) on the properties (ultimate tensile strength, Young’s modulus, elongation at

break and part density) of SLS produced parts. A design of experiments (DoE) approach was used to plan experiments. Test specimen according to DIN EN ISO 527-2 were produced on a sintering system (EOSINT P395) using polyamide 12 powder (EOS PA2200). The results of the DoE were used to develop regression models that describe the relation between the process settings and the resulting part properties. These models were used to enable part property prediction and were implemented in a software application.

This application enables identification of the appropriate process settings to obtain specific part properties. In addition, sensitivity analysis showed that mechanical properties of sintered parts are highly affected by layer thickness and scan spacing variations.

A LEAN STARTUP APPROACH TO NEW PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT OF PHYSICAL CONSUMER PRODUCTS: A CASE STUDY New product development is essential for companies to maintain their competitive advantage when technologies and customer needs are changing rapidly. Lean Startup is a new approach to product development that specifically deals with developing new products for new markets. In recent years, Lean Startup has become a popular practice amongst software startups and with the further development of the method, it is now also being applied in different industries and organisations. A large company that develops personal care appliances has recognised a need for a different process to guide an innovation project concerning a new generation hair clipper.

Compared to traditional, more linear development methodologies, Lean Startup offers a flexible and iterative approach to discover customer needs and build products accordingly. Thereby it deals with the many uncertainties faced in new product development.

The purpose of this master thesis is to research the usefulness of Lean Startup as a product development method in the context of this large company that develops physical consumer products. First, a Lean Startup Framework has been created that synthesizes Lean Startup concepts and provides a clear and unambiguous overview of how the method is understood today.

Consequently, this framework has been applied in a product development case study to empirically evaluate Lean Startup in practice. The case study is concerned with the new generation hair clipper, specifically targeted at mothers who clip their children. An additional goal of the case study is to solve a critical issue related to the hairstyle creation that was faced in the current innovation project.

The result of this thesis is twofold. First, a novel solution has been created through an iterative development with Lean Startup, that ensures a 46

high-quality hairstyle creation for children. The solution has been extensively validated with the target group and proves to effectively solve the main issue with the product proposition. Second, challenges have been identified for Lean Startup implementation during the case study. These have been used to make recommendations on when Lean Startup can be used and to formulate Lean Startup Guidelines. These guidelines inform project leaders of innovative projects on how to deal with Lean Startup in their development project. A formal implementation of Lean Startup and a structured execution has been found to be a major challenge.

Therefore, in addition to these guidelines, a tailored Lean Startup Framework is proposed that is adapted to the company’s context to support the further use and implementation of Lean Startup.

Nowadays, in this digital and connected world, people are increasingly motivated to look for smart and personalized products and solutions, which makes it easier for them to adopt a healthier and better lifestyle. Likewise, applying digital innovation in products is relevant for Philips: to be an innovative company it is crucial to be a forerunner in the application of modern technologies and information streams. The objectives of this research are to explore the benefits of digital propositions for conventional vacuum cleaners and to provide a framework for product designers who are dealing with digital innovation.

This study investigates the opportunities with respect to current and future markets, trends, consumer insights and technologies within Philips.

The digital proposition for high-end mainstream vacuum cleaners focuses on the future market of 2020, whereby three benefit drivers play

an important role: being in control, support healthy environment and effortless cleaning.

Based on these insights, a brainstorm session is conducted to generate ideas and translate them into potential concepts. After several iteration steps and through quantitative and qualitative concept tests, a new opportunity direction for the proposition is proposed, which aims to support consumers in creating a healthy living environment.

This proposition is further developed using the TRIZ methodology. Simultaneously, the result is tested by means of a functional prototype and is further elaborated into the final concept. The final concept is validated with representative users by means of a user experience test and the value proposition is determined. Finally, this study purposes a Philips product concept, which offers many benefits for both, the end-user and Philips. Recommendations are made for further development.

The building sector is responsible for more than 50% of all material use, 42% of all primary energy use and 30% of all water use within Europe. Therefore, a large variety of products, in particular environmental assessment labels, is developed. These products offer approaches and goals to realize sustainability in residential buildings. However, structure lacks within the market. Products in general are little transparent, incoherent and incomprehensible to effectively be applied by users. This makes it almost impossible for stakeholders in the building sector to obtain the necessary insights when communicating and deciding on the implementation of sustainable techniques and measures.

BIM FOR REUSE The construction industry is responsible for a lot of waste. More than 90% of that waste is recycled where recycling often means ‘downcycling’.

For example, when a building is demolished, concrete and bricks usually are crushed and used as foundation under roads, but it can never be used again as concrete and bricks to build a new building. By reusing building parts instead of recycling them, the material value can be kept on a higher level and the reduced energy input is better for the environment (minimizing the carbon footprint).

Current buildings however, do not make it easy to reuse the parts. Most parts are fused together permanently with a weld or poured in concrete.

Design for deconstruction is a method that provides guidelines for constructing buildings that can be taken apart again without damaging the parts. This should make it easier to reuse these building components. But since buildings usually are used for several decades, it will still be important to store the information on how the buildings should be deconstructed.

Building Information Modeling (BIM) is used to store building information in a 3D model. These models contain information that is needed for the construction of a new building, including all parts, details and planning. If during construction all building information can already be captured and stored in a BIM model, why not use that information again to deconstruct a building?

During this research a system (BIM for reuse) was developed that can be used during the deconstruction of buildings to increase the reuse potential. It can also be used to find retrieved materials from deconstructed buildings to create new buildings. The focus of the research is on which information should be included in BIM for reuse and how that information can be visualized.

By capturing materials removed during building renovation or demolition and finding ways to reuse them in another construction project or recycle them into a new product, the overall environmental impact of building materials can be reduced. Architects and engineers can contribute to this movement by designing buildings that facilitate adaptation and disassembly.

DESIGN FOR EMPOWERING PEOPLE TO GET A GRIP ON THEIR DAILY LIFE: AN EXPLORATION OF EMBODIED EMPOWERMENT THROUGH PARTICIPATORY DESIGN In the Netherlands, health care has traditionally been focused on ‘caring for somebody’, with patients in a passive, receiving role. Recently however, health care institutions like Philadelphia are aiming for a new approach: empowering clients to cope independently. For people with a cognitive disability, such as Autism Spectrum Disorder, this ‘empowering’ approach works well for activities with clear instructions and support, but coping independently with less structured, daily household activities remains challenging.

Technology could potentially offer the needed support, but will probably only be successful if it fits the lifeworld and routine of the user.

Embodiment theory may effectively inform the design of such a product. The aim of this thesis is therefore to design an embodied tool that empowers people with ASD to manage their own daily life, building on existing lifeworld and routines, in the context of an assisted living facility.

The approach for this research is grounded in the 56

methodology of iterative and participatory design.

Within five iterations, the project explores the daily life, interests and need of the user, and the relationship and design application of what we call ‘embodied empowerment’. These insights are used to gradually develop an embodied design of an interactive technology that can help to empower the target group in getting grip on their life.

One of the results is the discovery that empowering the target group is a multidimensional issue that does not only require supporting ability, but also needs to take into account other, socially and psychologically related issues. This understanding helped to formulate a set of ‘embodied empowerment design principles’, which in turn informed the new MyDay Light design. Apart from the product itself, the final version of the ‘embodied empowerment design principles’ might serve as a guiding framework for other designers that wish to design empowering technologies for a target group with special needs.

5WHOW, A MODULAR DESIGN METHOD To help a designer developing a good product, normally a design method is used. With this project, a new design method called 5Whow is developed. Where most of the current design methods focusses on what part of the project the designer should be working on, the new design method helps the designer through the project with the aspects of who, what, where, when, why and how. At the company Wassenburg Medical B.V. A case study is done to help develop and illustrate the design method. Wassenburg produces and sells machines specialised in the disinfection of endoscopes. During the case study, the user interaction between the endoscope and machine is analysed after which a design improvement is proposed. Over the report, several aspects of 5Whow are cycled through to come to the final product. This is intended as 5Whow supports flexibility of the project.

FROM CIRCULAR TO INFINITE: THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A TAILORED PACKAGINGPRODUCT DEVELOPMENT METHOD PaperFoam is a company specialised in the development and production of packagingproducts made from its own unique biobased PaperFoam material. Currently, PaperFoam is growing steadily and with this growth, the company gradually changes. One of these changes is that new and younger employees enter the company and in the near future the older generations will leave. When these employees leave the company, they will leave a knowledge deficit in their wake that will inevitably affect packaging-product development.

These aspects form the outlines of a PDM with a focus on continuous improvement of quality, knowledge and structure. Research on the company has provided necessary improvements for the contents of the PDM. The PDM incorporates a stage-gate approach and describes the steps and actions needed to develop PaperFoam packaging-products. In addition, a generalised PDM is developed to make it more widely applicable.

To prepare the company for the future an improved packaging-product development method (PDM) is established. Important aspects of packaging, design methods and organisational knowledge is derived from literature research.

GECKO-INSPIRED EASY-REMOVEL SKIN ADHESIVES Easy-removal skin adhesives require a robust reversible adhesion. This requirement is addressed in this study with the fabrication of PDMS micro-patterned surfaces inspired by gecko feet. We have studied two different peeling models for robust adhesion mechanism and skin deformation behaviour during peeling at the de-bonding moment. This report describes the conceptualisation, fabrication and the assessment of the robust adhesion and easy removal properties of gecko-inspired micro-patterned structures. These structures were aimed to maximize the ratio between pull-off strength and peel strength. They were fabricated using laser cutting technology which have been commonly used in manufacturing industry. We made several kinds of PDMS specimens in triangular, square and hexagonal patterns, as well as triangular, square, diamond and circular cross-sections. Contact angles of different micro-structured surfaces were assessed via the use of the Optical Contact Angle Measuring Device ( Dataphysics OCA 20).

Pull-off strength and peel strength measurements were operated on a skin substitute (MVQ silicon

L7350) using the Zwick(Model Z1.0/THIS) tensile tester. Multiple attachments were achieved on a range of preloads and dwelling times.

Generally speaking, the averaged pull-off strength for preload of 10N and dwelling time of 10s can reach up to 6 times of the averaged peel strength when the peel angle is 30 degrees. Also compared with conventional Band-Aids, we consistently observed a slight enhancement in attachment ability, and a significant decrease in peel strength between the skin alternative and adhesives. These results have obvious implementations that geckoinspired skin adhesives have the robust adhesion ability to protect wound from damage, also can be removed with less pain. In all likelihood, this work will considerably benefit the skin tissue medical industry in the future.

Moreover, the progress of technology, increase of speed in the society and high-performance pressure have led to mental overload; resulting in stress and other work-related disorders.

A solution to reduce stress might be found in the product- and interior design. Research indicated that nature has a unique ability to draw attention and reduce stress. In many office environments, natural elements are already implemented, such as plants or posters of nature. In this research, a design-oriented approach is used for implementing nature. The focus was on multi-sensory restorative patterns that occur in nature, such as complexity, light/shadow contrast, rhythms, et cetera.

The office environment and stress are explored with both a literature and a field study. This research indicates that a stress reduction solution can be found in improving people’s break habits.

The implementation of nature is combined 64

with persuasive technology strategies because the analysis phase shows that changing people’s behaviour might reduce stress. Several ideas for (multi-sensory) restorative breaks are generated and one is developed into a prototype. The design stimulates taking sufficient restorative breaks during a workday. To explore the first reactions and design’s restorative power an experiment in lab-setting is conducted. The test shows a positive effect in reducing stress compared to a normal situation. The result is a nature-based intervention that might reduce stress in the office.

DESIGNING DURABLE PRODUCT CONCEPTS THAT FIT BOTH THE BRAND AND THE ANNIVERSARY ‘Bolletje’ is a is a well-known Dutch brand that produces bakery food products for supermarkets in the Netherlands. The company has existed since 1867 and they will have their 150th anniversary in 2017. The company wants to celebrate this with durable product(s) for their customers and the assignment is to design concepts that fit the brand.

The company has not yet decided what budget is available, whether they want to release products with a savings system or that they will release giveaway products. In the orientation phase the concept of branding, the meaning of brand’s anniversaries and insights in loyalty programs have been studied. The Brand-Driven Innovation model of Abbing (2010) is used to design suitable product concepts for the 150th anniversary. In the analysis phase the brand’s identity has been made clear and the brand’s image of the brand was identified by carrying out a survey. The CustomerBased Brand Equity Pyramid of Keller (1998) was used to analyze the brand. The second part of the analysis part contains research concerning 66

the future of the food industry. This gave insights in future developments that could be taken into account when designing products for the 150th anniversary. After the analysis phase, a consumer test was created. In order to design useful products and to get insight into storing, buying and consuming rusks, crackers and gingerbread, a consumer test has been carried out. In the idea phase, many ideas for products were created that fit the brand’s identity, how key values could be designed and how emotions and thoughts could be strengthened. Several ideas were selected and presented to ‘Bolletje’. Ideas were further developed into concepts, together with the new concept of key values of ‘Bolletje’. The concepts were examined on compatibility with the brand and the desirability of the product concepts by carrying out a consumer test. The consumer test gave insights in the product concepts and two of them are being elaborated further, together with a proposal of a purchasing system in the detail phase. The result is an advice of product concepts.

DEVELOPMENT OF A KNOWLEDGE BASED CONFIGURATION SYSTEM Manufacturing industries are in the throes of a digital transformation that is accelerated by the emergence of a growing number of technologies (intelligent robots, 3d printing and virtual reality).

Next to this transformation, customers are demanding more personalized and customized products with fast and on time delivery. This all is causing a shift in paradigm, from mass production to mass customization. As a consequence, production strategies are changing from large amounts of standardized goods towards custom made product with low cost.

Increasing market demands, technology change and competition is increasing the levels of external complexity that companies have to face when developing their products. This affects the variety in the product portfolio, product architecture and product complexity. As a consequence, this is causing companies internal processes to become increasingly complex.

As a response, companies are adopting new methods and tools that enable them in offering mass customized products more efficiently and

effectively. This also holds for Royal Dutch Gazelle, a Dutch bicycle manufacturer which produces according a mass production strategy.

This graduation project presents the results of researching the implementation of mass customization principles at Royal Dutch Gazelle.

More specifically, it described the results of developing a knowledge based configuration system to support the product configuration process of bicycles. This research has four concrete results: a roadmap towards mass customization, a proof of concept product configurator, an implementation plan and an impact assessment at the development processes of Royal Dutch Gazelle.

It concludes that the full potential of mass customization needs agility in both development and production processes. It is expected that the proposed product configurator will increase the performance and agility of the development process of Royal Dutch Gazelle. However, the configurator needs to be developed further in order to validate this improvement.

by Sandwichbikes, a small bicycle company that officially operates under the Pedalfactory firm. The Sandwichbike originates from a design project that aimed to rethink all aspects of the bicycle industry, from construction and materials to distribution.

The result was a flat-packed bicycle that can be shipped worldwide and has to be put together by the customer. Instead of a conventional bicycle frame made of metal tubes, the Sandwichbike uses a sandwich construction that consists of two wooden panels that are bolted onto aluminum cylinders.

Since its official introduction to the market in 2013, the Sandwichbike has generated a lot of positive response and has received multiple design awards. IDENTIFYING PACKAGING ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT POSSIBILITIES WITH REGARD TO SUSTAINABILITY TARGETS Consumers open, on average, seven packages a day. Annually, 2.8 million tonnes of consumer packaging waste is generated in the Netherlands alone. Half of this waste can be attributed to food packaging. Reducing the environmental impact of packaging is one way to battle the increasing pressure on our environment.

Large food corporations are responsible for the distribution of many products and corresponding packages bought by consumers. Multinational dairy cooperative FrieslandCampina is one of these food corporations and recognises their environmental responsibility. However, reducing the environmental impact of their packaging is easier said than done. Due to the enormous product portfolios of these multinationals, it is too time-consuming to fully analyse all packages in the portfolio. This has caused a lack of insight into the environmental impact of their packaging portfolios, and thus it is unknown where to start the impact reduction process. Insight in the performance of

packaging is needed first in order to spend time and resources on improvements efficiently.

During this thesis, a method to analyse and monitor the environmental performance of packaging is developed. The result of the method gives an indication of the environmental performance of packaging with regard to sustainability targets. Because full analyses are too time-consuming, simplifications needed to be made, risking a difference between the results of the analysis and the actual environmental impact.

Finding the right balance between complexity and reliability is key in the development of a usable monitoring method for FrieslandCampina.

The monitoring method results in a performance matrix, displaying the performance of packaging with regard to sustainability targets relevant for FrieslandCampina. Based on this overview, gaps between the target and the packaging performance can be identified which are used to 72

select bad performing packaging for improvement.

This way, time and resources to improve the packaging performance can be effectively and efficiently spent. Based on the performance matrix, insight in the packaging performance can be used to improve current packaging but also to maximise the performance of new product developments.

DEVELOPMENT OF THE TAUW INNOVATION PYRAMID Tauw is an environmental consultancy and engineering company, working on sustainable solutions for a better environment. Markets for the Soil & Groundwater department are changing due a decrease of soil remediation projects. Therefore, the department is searching for new business opportunities. Innovation projects are started to create these new business opportunities.

However, past innovation projects often did not deliver these results: techniques and products were developed, pilot projects were executed, but successful market entries stayed out.

The results of these case studies have been used for the development of an innovation method: the Tauw Innovation Pyramid. This method structures the process and encourages the innovators to incorporate the internal and external influences that were found during the research, with a focus on anticipation and on the simultaneous development of the product, the market and the company.

The purpose of this master project was an exploratory research into innovation processes at Tauw and developing of an approach for structuring innovation processes increasing chances of successful market entry. Within this master assignment three innovation projects, the innovation capability of the company and the strategic context of innovation at Tauw have been studied via case studies.

THE NEW GOLD: DESIGNING THE SUCCESSOR OF THE VIKING GOLD 2005 SKATE BOOT The Dutch love ice skating. When temperatures drop, the prospect of an Elfstedentocht is what keeps us warm. This passion originated with our ancestors, who first discovered the joy of sliding around on sharpened animal bones more than three thousand years ago. Over the years, these primitive ice skates have developed enormously and now allow professional ice skaters to achieve speeds of around 60 kilometers per hour.

Founded in 1948, Viking is one of the leading Ice skate manufacturers in the Netherlands, known internationally for its innovative speed skates, including the first clap skate and its flagship product: The Gold 2005 skate boot. The Gold 2005 is an advanced skate boot, designed for the most avid speed skaters, and can be shaped into the perfect fit due to its incorporated

thermoplastic components.

After eleven years it was time for something new; a successor for the Gold 2005 Skate Boot.

In order to design a successful and recognizable product, extensive analyses were conducted on the brand, market, product and target group.

Moreover, a future analysis was performed. These analyses were used to optimize the design process and ultimately gave rise to a new skate boot that combines a modern appearance and functional improvements, with a sense of recognition by the target group.

IMPROVEMENTS ON THE PRODUCTION PROCESS OF SENSEO At the production plant of Jacobs Douwe Egberts in Utrecht, over 2.5 tons of Senseo coffee pads are produced every hour. For a high level of flexibility and quick responses to the demand from the market, as well as keeping a low stock in the warehouse, a large number of changeovers is desirable. To make this approach lucrative, the time it takes to perform a changeover should be minimized, causing as little downtime of a production line as necessary.

At the Senseo production facility a distinction between two types of changeovers can be made: a changeover to a caffeinated coffee type and a changeover to a decaffeinated coffee type. In order to give coffee the label decaffeinated the caffeine contents should be below 0,1%, which is also a measurable parameter for the quality of the coffee pads. Contamination with caffeinated coffee should thus be avoided, as for these coffee types the caffeine contents in general range between 1% and 2%. For caffeinated coffee there are no measurable parameters that are corresponding to

purely one coffee type. Determining the quality of these coffee types is established by sensory experts based on the taste and colour of the coffee.

In 2014 changeovers caused over 1.000 hours of downtime across all Senseo production lines.

Changeovers to decaffeinated coffee account for approximately 15% of this downtime, the rest is caused by changeovers to caffeinated coffee. This research has decreased this downtime significantly, resulting in an increased production capacity of the Senseo production plant of JDE Utrecht.

MediaLAB started the Employee Journey project at KLM. The multidisciplinary group assignment focused on developing a real-time performance tool to aid supervisory staff during the boarding process. The real-time performance tool is an iPad application. The research phase of this project hinted at low technology acceptance in KLM. Available iPads went unused as did the programs developed for them.

This thesis project started parallel to the Employee Journey project. It reviews technology acceptance literature and methodology to evaluate technology acceptance issues. The method used for evaluation is a modified version of the UTAUT which incorporates the latest literature on the subject. This review provided a list of predictors, constructs and moderators on which to analyze KLM’s passed shortcomings.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF A PLATFORM THAT ENABLES SMARTPHONE ACCESS CONTROL Most modern office buildings, hospitals, airports, and industrial estates are equipped with systems that control the access of people and resources to (parts of) these locations. In order to get access to one of these locations, people need to present their identities to the access control system.

Currently, presenting a user identity is most often accomplished with a physical access control card. However, this plastic card is vulnerable and easy to forget. Technological developments have enabled new possibilities for presenting the access control system someone’s identity. With these technologies, it is now possible to replace the physical access control card by a smartphone with an access-application installed. Nedap Identification Systems has more than 30 years of experience in developing physical access control systems. The shift towards the use of smartphones in the field of access control could be a chance for Nedap to expand its position in the field of identification technology. Therefore, Nedap Identification Systems has started thinking about a new access control system in which the physical cards are no longer required. A new platform came to mind, 82

which is called “MACE”: Mobile Access Control Entities. At that time, a few of NIS’s competitors had already launched a mobile access control system in which physical access control cards were replaced by smartphones. In order to show the market that Nedap is able to compete with these companies, the first version of MACE has been released in a relatively short amount of time. For the development of future versions of MACE it is required to conduct a more thorough preliminary research, based on which important design decisions could be made. This thesis covers both the research and a proposal for the future versions of MACE. The result of this thesis involves a system design of the MACE-platform, in which its sub-systems and the data flows between these sub-systems become clear. Moreover, a list of both functional and technical specifications is created, along with an exterior design for the physical product and a graphical user interface for the software products in the platform. Finally, an implementation strategy is created for Nedap to make the results of this thesis useful during further development of the MACE platform.

With the conviction that addressing the problem of resource constrains will bring an advantage to the company, Philips decided to embed circular economy (CE) thinking in their strategic vision and mission in 2012.

Although Philips is determined to transition towards a circular economy, there are still a few obstacles that need to be tackled, especially in the Consumer Lifestyle domain.

This graduation thesis explores how Philips Research department can be better supported in its transition towards design for a circular economy. A methodology is developed to improve the usability of the large quantity of CE methods in the design process. A case study for Kitchen Appliances is executed that is used both as an initial exploration of circular economy methods, as well as to create a tangible product that demonstrates the possibilities of circular economy thinking.

RESEARCH ON THE INFLUENCE OF DESIGN ON THE DIFFUSION OF TECHNOLOGY The acceptance of technology is an important factor in the diffusion of that technology through a society. A branch of technology that is currently struggling with acceptance is robotics. While the idea of robots helping in households has been around for a long time, actual implementation has been limited. Several studies have found factors that influence the acceptance of robots in society. However, only few guidelines for the design of a robot have followed from these studies. The goal of this research was to find a method of generating guidelines for the design of a technology to improve the diffusion of that technology through a society.

As a case study, this method was used for robotics.

First, contemporary design movements and philosophy of technology were mapped. Next, current developments and diffusion of robotics were analysed and compared to the diffusion of successful technologies. Based on the differences in conformity at this point of diffusion, guidelines were created.

These guidelines were used to create the design of two robots: a social companion robot and a vacuum robot. In the case of the social companion robot, the conformity to contemporary design movements was increased to achieve similar values as the other technologies. In the case of the vacuum robot, the conformities were sufficient for this point of diffusion. However, to achieve further diffusion, the conformity to the philosophy of technology was increased in the design.

In this research, the conformity of successful technologies to the design movements and philosophy of technology during the period of their diffusion was analysed. With these conformities, the relations are shown between the design of successful technologies and the temporal views on design and technology in society.

Subsequently, these relations can be used to map successful design of contemporary technology.

Based on the evaluation of this process, a method was created to apply this process to different technologies.

THE TRAIN STATION AS AN ENERGY HUB In this research the train station area, which is currently a transport hub, is redesigned as an energy hub. This energy hub uses smart grid technology to reduce the energy consumption by creating a better match between supply and demand of energy. Hereby FunKey and TRIZ are used to create an optimal system architecture of the train station as an energy hub.

These are: the e-mobility station architecture, the on-demand station architecture and the smart station architecture. The first architecture uses electric vehicles as energy storage. The second architecture uses demand flexibility to reduce energy costs and increases use of locally generated energy. The third system architecture uses both sensors and data analysis to create an optimal control of energy demand.

The research was performed at Witteveen+Bos, a company that provides both engineering and consultancy services. The assignment is part of the transition towards a more sustainable energy consumption and towards the use of smart grids.

Theoretical research was used to define the functions, stakeholders and energy consumption on the train station including the connections in the area. Initial calculations indicated that more than 30% of all energy can be generated by renewable energy sources. Further research showed that this value is only possible with an optimal match between energy supply and demand. Three system architectures that make this optimal match possible were identified.

Application of these system architectures on the wide variety of train stations in the Netherlands was tested using three existing train stations.

The stations ranged from very small (Nieuw Amsterdam), average (Deventer) to very large (Zwolle).

The results show that all three architectures improve use of renewable energy and increase energy reduction by integrating supply and demand within the train station as an energy hub.

The best performance depends on the type of train station, with the overall best performance from the smart station.

CONCEPT DESIGN OF THE NEW INTERNATIONAL URBAN LIFESTYLE BICYCLE Gazelle is a Dutch bicycle company that is planning on focussing more on their export market. They also want to rejuvenate their brand and attract a younger target group. Therefore, they want a “concept design of the new international urban lifestyle bicycle”. The target group will be the young professional between the age of 20 and 35. The new design is planned to be introduced soon. Therefore, the design needs to make use of currently available technologies. The focus markets are Germany, Belgium, Denmark, United Kingdom and the United States. The project itself was executed at Van der Veer designers in Geldermalsen.

Based on the research outcomes, several concepts were developed and together with Gazelle one of the concepts was chosen. This design was detailed, finalized and defined in a 3D CAD file.

The design was tested in the specific market by the specific target group, which resulted in a list of recommendations. The new urban lifestyle bicycle is received with enthusiasm by Gazelle and a project is started to commercialize the design.

The process started by gaining background knowledge about the core values of the Gazelle brand and the target group. The focus markets were researched by means of desk- and field research. Dealers were visited and interviewed in Copenhagen, London and Cologne. This research resulted in a list of requirements and two possible design directions.

VALUE PROPOSITION CREATION IN UNSERVED EMERGING MARKETS: A CASE STUDY Improving lives through meaningful innovation.

As the mission of Philips, this involves coming up with the right value propositions. The term value proposition might seem as some kind of buzzword, a magical solution to new product development but nothing could be less true; the process of value proposition creation is in fact part of every new product development process. It typically covers the first part of the development process where it is defined how to offer value to the end-user.

In creation of value propositions within Innovation Team Male Grooming, the well-defined Philips wide development process is applied to come to a value proposition in a unified and consistent way. This process prescribes tools and activities tested in served markets, markets for which Philips already created products. It is expected that this standard process has its limitations when applied in an unserved market as the application of this process and its tools requires a considerable commitment of resources to get to consumer insights.

A case study is carried out to create a value proposition for such an unserved emerging market. Topic of this case study is the same as a running project, but in this case, for Philips non-standard tools and processes are applied.

The search for suitable ways of value proposition creation results in the application of tools en processes that originate in the field of customer development and lean startup.

Final result of this project is two-fold. Result on a product level is a validated proposition with prototyped function in embodiment. Result on a process level is an evaluation of applied tools with recommendations for future application in value proposition creation.

PARTICIPATORY DESIGN: INVOLVING PATIENTS IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SMART MEDICAL PACKAGING Over the current decade, digital disruptions have changed our world dramatically. Once stable technology-oriented companies acknowledge their need for radical changes. A paradigm shift has been started, with these companies setting up specific design thinking departments for changing their business holistically. Nutricia Research has embraced this approach, recognising their need and desire for innovation through design thinking. The R&D organisation has made a step change by restructuring most of its organisation in patient-oriented departments. For aligning with the company’s patient-oriented vision, the Packaging team aims for developing a technology such as Smart Packaging through a humancentred design approach. For finding a solution that adds value for the patient and leveraging the expertise that patients have in using their medical nutrition, participatory design is applied. Through an analysis of the needs for participatory design and integrative thinking, a packaging solution, consisting of a dosing cap and a smartphone

application, for patients with Inborn Metabolic Disorders is developed. This thesis has a twofold result, combining the developed Smart Packaging solution with Participatory Design Guidelines. The solution delivers patients a tool for automatically keeping track of their diet, which offers insights and provides a possibility for finding relations between their diet and their health. The Smart Packaging solution is defined by means of 3D prints and a smartphone mock-up. A theoretical analysis of the technological design challenges provides a starting point for industrialisation of the concept. A generative, participatory design evaluation confirms the added value of the solution for the patient. The Participatory Design Guidelines provide the Packaging team with guidance for patient involvement in humancentred packaging projects. Recommendations for initiating in-house human-centred design activities are given. The guidelines can be used as a starting point for implementing such activities in daily practice and the way of working.

DESIGN OF AN ENVIRONMENTAL INTERVENTION FOR A RESIDENTIAL CARE AND NURSING HOME TO IMPROVE THE WELL-BEING OF PEOPLE WITH DEMENTIA Dementia patients living in residential care centres often experience restlessness, leading to wandering behaviour. Environmental design could be effective in stimulating mental calmness.

However, environmental conditions that encourage mental calmness for one individual, could evoke feelings of anxiety for the other person. The challenge is to deal with different individual needs.

The concept is evaluated by a usability test with six prototype handrails, implemented in the corridors of the psychogeriatric ward of residential care and nursing home ‘Gerardus Majella’ in Denekamp. The results of the test give insight in the intuitive use of the handrails by dementia patients, and lead to aspects that require further research and development.

In this project, an environmental intervention is designed to reduce restlessness in people suffering from dementia. Based on participating observations, expert interviews and a literature study, requirements for the environmental design intervention are defined. The idea generation and concept development eventually resulted in the design of the ‘geheugensteun’: an interactive handrail provided with multisensory stimuli to stimulate brain activity during intuitive use of the 96

THE DESIGN OF A WATERTIGHT AND EASY TO USE FOOD CONTAINER For Rosti Mepal, a producer of plastic food related products, a set of watertight food containers was designed. When designing a product for a brand, the product has to fit the brand. Not just the appearance, but also the quality, functionality and usability must fit. Also, the competitors should be taken into account in a crowded market like the market of food containers. Tools like a Brand Identity Prism, a VRIO analysis and rapid prototyping were used during the design process.

Selection of materials and production processes proved to be essential for this assignment.

“WHAT IF?” CULTURAL CHANGE IN THE MUSEUM BOIJMANS VAN BEUNINGEN BY THE WHAT-IF APPROACH OF WIM GILLES The museum Boijmans Van Beuningen conserves the studio archive of Wim Gilles, one of the first industrial designers in the Netherlands. The museum has the desire to make this archive visible, which includes product development processes of different designs of Gilles.

Currently, the museum develops various products to reveal her collection, among others exhibitions, publications and various workshops.

The current way of working and interacting with each other in the museum’s organisation focuses more on eliminating risks rather than maximising opportunities. Departments in the organisation share their knowledge, ideas and requirements in a later stage. Therefore, other ideas and requirements are hardly developed and design activities are missing in the organisation. In this culture, there is a lack of transparency in the product development of the organisation.

A new way of working and interacting with each other makes material of the collection visible from perspectives of the different departments of the organisation. So, multiple targets of the museum could be achieved.

This research project provides an overview of the different perspectives of the organisation to reveal the studio archive of Wim Gilles. A game is developed based on What-if? thinking described

by Wim Gilles to accomplish this cultural shift. Also, a prediction is given how to make the Wim Gilles studio’s archive visible in the new way of working and interacting with each other.

MECHANICAL BEHAVIOUR OF COMPOSITE SANDWICH PANELS IN BENDING AFTER IMPACT This master thesis is about the mechanical behaviour of composite sandwich panels in bending after impact. The goals were to identify the influence of an impact loading on the residual bending stiffness, to determine the failure modes after impact and during bending, to illustrate the influence of core material type on the mechanical behaviour in bending after impact and to demonstrate the effect of impact energy on the mechanical response in bending after impact. In literature, several articles describe the mechanical behavior in compression after impact, but bending after impact is not yet investigated before. In sandwich composites, four different failure types are described; Core Shearing, Microbuckling, Indentation and Face Wrinkling. There has been made use of an experimental analysis and a Finite Element Method analysis. For the panels use is made of an epoxy/glass facesheet with three different core materials; SAN foam, PET foam and Balsa. A three-point bending test is performed, then a reference impact test is performed. Finally,

an impact test is performed on specimens with the dimensions of the bending test. The same tests are also performed in the ABAQUS FEM simulation software. It is shown that the impact tests cause a skin-core delamination at the bottom of the Balsa cored panels, while the SAN foam and the PET foam cores do not show signs of this delamination. Furthermore, it is shown that an impact has a significant influence on the bending stiffness of composite sandwich panels, dependent on the core material. The SAN foam cored specimens lose the most stiffness, compared to PET foam and Balsa.The FEM simulations show that the impact energy has an influence on the mechanical behaviour of the composite sandwich panels. The simulations show that the higher the impact energy, the lower the bending stiffness for the PET foam core and the Balsa core, but for the SAN foam there is no significant influence. The impact energy also a significant influence on the shear stress distribution of the Balsa core and on the PEEQ distribution of the PET foam core.

HOMEY CARES: THE ROLE OF HOME AUTOMATION FOR THE ELDERLY Homey is an innovative smart product by the UT spin-off company Athom. The product is aimed at assisting the user in controlling all their wireless devices with their voice. Using Homey as a central voice activated system to control the house caught the interest of care providers. This inspired Athom to initiate this master assignment to research the potential of using Homey in healthcare situations.

Healthcare is constantly changing with the developing needs and wants of society. The most drastic change will be the growing percentage of the elderly within society. The need for elderly care will keep increasing more than the available care budget and workforce will grow. The result is, that we increasingly rely on self-care and family care. Innovative products for communication, monitoring and self-care are seen as key solutions to make sure that the quality of healthcare keeps increasing and the elderly can be in control of their own lives for as long as possible.

Homey will be used to assist the elderly in self-care and family care. At this time the most suitable approach for the company is to inform the target audience about the product possibilities concerning their needs. This resulted in the design of an Advice Wizard with use cases suitable for the target audience. The prototype informs the users about the possibilities of the product and leads them through the process of setting up the ideal configuration of Homey and corresponding products for their personal situation.

SUSTAINABILITY ROADMAP 2030: OUTLINE FOR A ROYAL AUPING CIRCULAR ECONOMY ROADMAP CONCERNING CUSTOMER RELEVANCE AND COMMUNICATION In order to take its responsibility and to give its innovation process a pulse, Royal Auping embraced sustainable development. The company stated the mission to operate completely circular in 2020.Part of this mission is that Auping products will take part in closed material cycles. The product materials must maintain permanent value: either because they are degraded impact free or because they are reprocessed in high-quality products. Auping can solely benefit from the adjustments that the company makes concerning their product designs and manufacturing processes when the products actually will take part of circular material flows. However, what happens to the sold products cannot be controlled by Auping but requires cooperation from its customers. The purpose of this graduation project was to provide the Marketing and Innovation department of the company with possible propositions to involve the customer in the sustainability mission of Auping.

In order to find customer relevant propositions

literature has been reviewed, retailers have been interviewed, and a short customer questionnaire has been conducted. This resulted in the conclusion that the department has to develop propositions that: • offer functional value to the customer • cause arousal / emotional experience, • communicate transparently, • create a strong relationship between the customer and the company, • are accessible at customer controlled times and places.

Based on these findings a concept of an Auping Business Model is designed for the year 2030. This business model is based on an innovative value proposition, incorporating consumer trigger points, and requirements for material circularity.

Finally, an implementation roadmap is drawn.

It includes various development stages and intermediate propositions contributing to the 2030 vision.

THE DESIGN PROCESS OF A NEXT GENERATION LONG RANGE VEHICLE TRANSPONDERS NEXT TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF A USER-CENTRED DESIGN GUIDE FOR A TECHNOLOGY DRIVEN BUSINESS-TOBUSINESS COMPANY Nedap Identification Systems (NIS) is the market leader of long-range identification for vehicle access control. Their patented TRANSIT Booster solution identifies both the vehicle and the driver.

The vehicle is equipped with a transponder and the driver’s access control card is read by the transponder. This sends both the identity of the vehicle and driver to the control system.

Fifteen years ago, the first TRANSIT Booster was introduced. Nine years later, the product was redesigned. However, it appeared to be less robust and durable. Also, new technologies have become available and views on design have changed, which has fed the desire for a redesign. The given assignment was to design a next generation of TRANSIT transponders with a set of requirements related to design and future technologies.

While researching NIS’ products, it was noticed

that their design process focusses mainly on technological improvements and position in the market and less on the desires of the market. By taking into account all three, NIS can develop even better products. A solution was found by expanding their design process with a user-centred design guide.

The final thesis consists out of two parts, which are connected to each other. The Nedap Identification Systems’ User Centred Design (NIS’ UCD) guide is made and complements the design approach of NIS with a user-centred design approach. Methods from this guide are used to design the next generation transponders. These TRANSIT transponders consist of a line of six transponders. The simpler shapes together with innovative solutions make the products userfriendly and ready for the future market.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON PACKAGING STEEL Tata Steel Packaging is facing a challenging time and is in need of a new pro-active approach.

Packaging steel is losing market share, especially to Aluminium and Plastics. The question for Tata Steel Packaging is, if the downward trend can be changed by a new approach that fits the current situation.

The solution is found by treating packaging steel as a brand. The major problem areas are image, presentation, and development. Packaging steel suffers from a rather unattractive image, predictable presentation, and clearly visible improvements have come to a hold. The solution is to rejuvenate the brand packaging steel.

Presentation of packaging steel is revised, based on a re-established identity to improve its image. A module is created as a follow-up to demonstrate the brand packaging steel.

Masterpieces A masterpiece is (a) something superlative of its kind, and (b) a piece of work that proves a person is a master in his subject. We present you the masterpieces of 2016!

In its short period of existence, Industrial Design Engineering has become one of the most popular programmes in Twente. The source of its popularity can possibly be attributed to its strong relationship to artefacts in people’s everyday life, and by the fact that the programme combines aspects of many subjects – from technology and management to psychology, ergonomics, creativity and philosophy.
