History of Hooding The hooding ceremony at the University of Texas at Tyler signifies a scholarly and personal achievement The origin of academic regalia are believed to have originated in European universities in the 12th century. Hooded robes, often required for warmth in unheated medieval libraries, were first used as a practical uniform for scholars as they studied and produced written works. Universities began to differentiate students by their academic majors, and colors were addded to the robes to signify those distinctions. Graduates from UT Tyler with a Doctor of Nursing Practice wear a black hood. PhD in Nursing wear a blue hood. Doctoral hoods are fourfeet in length and are worn around the neck in the front, draping in the back. In the past, doctoral graduates are hooded by their Program Director or Mentor. However, in this unique virtual ceremony each graduate will be hooded by a person of their choosing. Graduates wear your hood proudly, as you have successfully transitioned from student to scholar.
