At about 12:35 a.m., a UTPD officer was notified of a female who was not responsive at 2515 Anne Baker Furrow. Upon the officer’s arrival on scene, the officer made contact with the victim and she was later transported to the University of Tennessee Medical Center for treatment and evaluation.

Around 12:09 a.m., a UTPD officer was dispatched to the UTPD police station in reference to a previously occurred theft. The complaint stated that her purse was stolen from Neyland Stadium during the first half of the football game on 11/07/15. The complainant received a case card.

11/9/15 Conference Center Building/600 Henley Street

At approximately 1:29 a.m., a UTPD officer responded to the Terrace Ave. entrance of G11 to investigate a report of an individual laying face down on the sidewalk. One individual was arrested for public intoxication.

11/8/15 Alpha Tau Omega/1812 Fraternity Park Drive At 2:35 p.m., a UTPD officer was dispatched to 1812 Fraternity Park Drive in reference to a theft. The victim was given a UTPD case card and was asked to contact UTPD with any further information or concern regarding this incident.

A victim reported being harassed by phone calls. The victim stated an unwanted voice message was left on her work phone at the receptionist desk. The victim stated this is the first time in about a week that she has received these harassing calls while at work.

The victim was given a completed UTPD case card.

11/9/15 Carrick Hall North/1021 Francis Street At approximately 9:12 p.m., a UTPD officer was dispatched to an odor of marijuana in North Carrick Hall. The Assistant Hall Director escorted the officer to where the odor was originated and the officer confiscated drug paraphernalia items.

Students stand in solidarity with Mizzou Connor Barnhill Staff Writer

Within the first weeks of November, racial tensions and protests at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri, have sparked a plethora of campuses across the nation to re-examine the safety, policy and quality of protection for African American and other minority student groups.

In between the racial slurs hurled at Mizzou’s student body president and an all black student organization during homecoming, racial tensions on the college’s campus reached an all time high. Thirty of Mizzou’s football players announced they were going on strike unless the Mizzou’s system president, Tim Wolfe, stepped down from his position.

When Wolfe finally announced his resignation on Nov. 9, death threats were sent out to black students via YikYak and other social media platforms, resulting in cancelled classes and investigations by campus and local police departments.

With UT’s game against the Mizzou Tigers only weeks away, it’s no surprise that two student groups snatched the opportunity to take a stand, quite literally, “In Solidarity” with Mizzou’s student activists after the response

from law enforcement left much to be desired.

Over 600 miles away in Knoxville, the all-black student organization, Culture Shock, planned an art showcase and “blackout” rally alongside Big Orange Big Cure, a group that raises awareness for disabled students and issues on campus.

Showcase and rally organizer Drost Kokoye said the events at Mizzou are more than relevant for the future of diversity initiatives on UT’s campus, citing the Tennessee General Assembly’s senatorial meeting which questioned the finances spent on diversity programs.

If the state’s legislators were to cut the budget by 2.5 million dollars, Kokoye stressed the dire consequences for minority students at UT. “The programs they’d be taking from are programs that allow us to create these safe spaces where we can, as students, be ourselves,” Kokoye said. “It’s one of the only places we can be ourselves on a campus where we don’t feel welcome or safe because the institutions were not designed for us.”

Held in Hollingsworth Auditorium, the prerally art gallery reflected Kokoye’s ideas of individuality and oppression as a variety of portrait and painting styles lined the room. Poetry readings, focusing on the lives of student of color were also incorporated into the event as a jazz band accompanied the lively lyrics and com-

ments from the rally attendees.

Sophia Goodwin, sophomore in studio art, was one student who was invited to display her work at the showcase. For Goodwin, the justicebased showcase is a benefit to all students.

“I wish that this happened more on campus,” Goodwin said. “It feels like there’s a niche of people pushing for student diversity, but there’s not a lot of involvement in the entirety of the student body. I think, though, that Culture Shock is really helping the movement gain momentum.”

Ty Murray, junior in Public Relations and Culture Shock member, said these “safe places” are, as Goodwin stated, vital for all students to better recognize and accept diversity on campus.

“It’s important to see that you’re not the only person feeling how you feel,” Murray said. “A lot of times in society we’re conditioned to feel a certain way, and as minorities we already have an unpopular and unrepresented opinion.”

Murray also emphasized that the events at Mizzou could just as easily ensue on any campus that doesn’t actively support inclusivity among its student population.

“Anywhere where hate lives, things like Mizzou could happen,” Murray said. “I do think there’s a lot of ingrained hate from racism, but things like this are the first step towards a solution.”

Council holds car smashing event Noah King

Contributor Members of United Residence Halls Council want you to smash the windows out of their car.

Hammers and baseball bats in hand, URHC waited as interested by-passers stopped to participate in their fifth annual car bashing in Presidential Court on Thursday afternoon.

While URHC has traditionally held a fundraising event for house building projects for Habitat for Humanity, the council members like Meghan Byrge, a senior in anthropology decided this year was time to partner with the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“It supports a good organization while giving the opportunity to de-stress,” Byrge said. “We (at URHC) submitted a solicitation requirement on student engagement and went from there.”

After a phone call to Lambert Auto, the students and UT housing representatives obtained a donated car, left only with the cost of towing the vehicle to UT campus.

While the physical destruction is appealing, Byrge emphasized that the real impact stems

from the donations received from participants at the set price of three swings per dollar. With UT Housing’s goal at $500, it’s not hard to see the appeal as URHC representations hooked “customers” with phrases like, “Got exams?

Hit a car with a hammer.”

For Leigh Belmont, a junior in deaf education, parlaying funds into a non-profit like Make-A-Wish is the reason she participated on residence hall council at Laurel Hall, eventually snatching her position in URHC. Since Make-A-Wish averages one wish every 37 minutes in the United States, Belmont said the opportunity to put on events that benefits a larger community beyond UT makes the work worthwhile.

“I knew there were a lot of good events put on for the group (because) they organize events for housing and the community in general,” Belmont said.

URHC also collaborated with the Tennessee Association of Residence Halls, an organization that operates works state-wide to organizer fundraisers for non-profits like Make-AWish.

Black administrator named Missouri System’s interim head Associated Press

COLUMBIA, Mo. — One of the University of Missouri’s first black law school graduates was appointed Thursday to lead the fourcampus system through a tumultuous period of racial unrest, drawing praise from students who said he’s well-equipped to confront the problems they felt his predecessor largely ignored.

Michael Middleton, 68, has spent 30 years at the university — as an undergraduate, law student, faculty member and finally, administrator. At a news conference announcing his appointment as the university system’s interim president, he vowed to take on the racial problems that inspired the protests that helped force Monday’s abrupt resignation of President Tim Wolfe and another top administrator.

“I have seen the system grow and excel over the years and I look with great optimism in the future,” said Middleton.

He said the university “has faced its share of troubling incidents and we recognize that

we must move forward as a community. We must embrace these issues as they come, and they will come to define us in the future.”

MU Policy Now, a student group made up of graduate and professional students, had been pushing for the president’s role to go to Middleton, who retired as deputy chancellor of the Columbia campus in August and had been made a deputy chancellor emeritus. He had been working part-time to assist Loftin design a plan to increase inclusion and diversity on campus.

“Given the recent turmoil, Deputy Chancellor Emeritus Middleton is a strong transitional figure,” the group wrote in a letter of endorsement posted on its Facebook page and sent to curators. Several student organizations signed the recommendation letter, including the Legion of Black Collegians.

Second-year law student Christopher Hamm, president of the school’s Black Law Students Association, applauded the appointment.

“There is nobody better suited to lead this university than Mike Middleton,” said Hamm, 22, of Cincinnati, Ohio.

Comedy festival to showcase local talent Samantha Kennedy Contributor

Knoxville is known for many things, but one thing that remains relatively unknown is the strength of the local comedy scene.

This year, the second annual Scruffy City Comedy Festival will take place this weekend.

The festival is a three-day comedy show that will feature some of the best comedians from Knoxville and around the country.

The festival is produced by Super Cat Productions, who also run the Cape Fear Comedy Festival in Wilmington, North Carolina, as well as Knox Comedy Live.

“I founded this festival to showcase the local comedy artists and the beautiful city of Knoxville,” Matt Ward, founder of the festival, said.

This year, nearly three dozen comedians will be performing at the venues, which are all in walking distance of Market Square. Along with these featured comedians, the festival will also have nationally headlining comedians performing each night. These headliners include Andy Sandford, Jackie Kashian, Mia Jackson and Shane Mauss.

Last year was the inaugural festival, and the owners are excited to make this year’s festival even better. The event is unlike any other comedy festival in East Tennessee, so last year hundreds of people flocked to Downtown Knoxville to see the comedians over the course of the three-day event.

“The turnout was great and people I didn’t know raved to me about the festival afterwards not knowing I had anything to do with it, which is encouraging,” Ward said.

The purpose of this festival is to help showcase some of the up and coming comedians in Knoxville and around the country, in addition to the nationally known headliners.

“I would say our overarching goal is to let people in Knoxville see how strong our comedy scene is and what amazing unheard of funny folks exist all around the country,” Ward said. “Also, to let these out of town comics see how amazing Knoxville is as a city.”

Some of the stand-up comedians that will be performing include Chris Trew, Bryce Damuth, Carmen Morales, Drew Morgan, Justin Williams, Kristine Kinsey, Bob Hansen, Brock Wilbur, and Clark Jones to name a few.

In addition to the stand-up performers, there will also be a few improvisation groups that will be performing. Einstein Simplified, one of these groups, has been performing since 1994 and is the longest running improvisational group in Knoxville and the surrounding area.

Full Disclosure, the other group, is Knoxville’s premier long-form improvisation and sketch comedy group. Since their start in 2014, their popularity has been steadily increasing with every show.

“Improv is really entertaining to me because you never know what’s gonna happen next and I think it takes real talent to just be put on the spot and be funny,” Bryan Wardeberg, freshman in geology, said.

The festival will take place from Friday, Nov. 13 to Sunday, Nov. 15. A festival pass will be $30. The pass will give you access to all shows during the festival. During the week of the festival, the tickets will go up to $40. Tickets are available at https://scruffycitycomedy.com/ tickets/

Bubble yuck: Crews unstick old gum from famed Seattle wall Associated Press

SEATTLE (AP) — A piece of Seattle history is coming down — or rather, 1 million little pieces.

Crews are cleaning up the city’s famed “gum wall” near Pike Place Market, where tourists and locals have been sticking their used chewing gum for the past 20 years.

The wall is plastered with wads of gum in a kaleidoscope of colors, some stretched and pinched into messages, hearts and other designs. People also have used the gooey gobs to paste up pictures, business cards and other mementos.

On Tuesday, powerful steam cleaners were melting it all off.

Emily Crawford, a Pike Place Market spokeswoman, said that following a busy sum-

mer season, market leaders decided now was as good a time as any to wipe the wall clean.

But they expect people will start leaving gum on the space again soon.

“It’s an icon. It’s history,” said onlooker Zoe Freeman, who works near Pike Place. “The market is famous for the gum wall. But it also draws rats.”

Pike Place Market hired a contractor, Cascadian Building Maintenance, to take on the cleaning. They chose steam over pressurewashing to conserve the historic market’s brick walls.

On Tuesday, a fruity, sweet smell wafted through the alley as workers in protective suits blasted the dried gum with moist air.

“I just hope that the citizens of Seattle don’t hate me for removing the gum wall,” said Kelly Foster, the contractor’s general manager.

Dear Aramark...

Dear Aramark Corporation,

UT students want a dining provider that uses its tremendous purchasing power to support a healthy food system that strengthens local economies, respects human rights, ensures ecological sustainability and facilitates community involvement and education.

We spoke up about mandatory meal plans, and our concerns were dismissed. With that being said, at the very least UT students deserve to be able to purchase real, quality food with their mandatory meal plans.

Real food falls into one or more of the following categories: local or community-based, fair, ecologically sound, or humane. Real food prevents adverse health, social, economic and ecological outcomes.

Real food has impacts that extend far beyond the scope of campus. Migrant farmers, food service workers, rural economies, and animal habitats are among the many beneficiaries of an improved food system.

Sustainable food is necessary in achieving reductions in carbon emissions, fair wages for farm laborers around the world, self-sufficiency and sovereignty in indigenous subsistence communities, and improvements in nutrition in an increasingly diseased world.

Food is at the core of our sustenance, our culture, our religions, and our livelihoods, thus it requires sincere reevaluation.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst, Oberlin, University of California, Santa Cruz and

Warren Wilson College are among the signatories of a commitment for the procurement of real food on campus, indicating a commitment to making the world a better place in one of the most straightforward and simple ways possible. It is time for the University of Tennessee to be a leader, both in the SEC and in the nation, on conscious consumption and real food.

We are aware the Request for Proposal is coming up with the expiration of Aramark’s contract with UT in 2017. We are also aware this contract was extended through the year 2027 without transparency or notification to the student body. We are using this Request for Proposal, a solicitation made through UT’s bidding process in procurement of dining services, to finally ensure our requests are acknowledged and our demands are taken seriously.

Our specific asks are as follows: 1. Annual increase in procurement of “real” food, as defined above, culminating in at least 20% real food on campus by the year 2020 2. Transparency in contracts and purchasing details 3. Support of cafeteria-based education increasing awareness about ecologically sustainable, humane, and socially equitable food systems 4. To live up to policies stated on all Aramark websites There are innumerable steps to take to accomplish the first and main ask, the procurement of 20% real

Vols can make a difference In the Villa Alta Gracia community in the Dominican Republic, workers like Martiza Vargas and Yenny Perez once relied on their jobs as garment workers to barely get by. Like many garment workers in the Global South working in free-trade-zone factories, the race-to-the-bottom production model left them vulnerable to absurd hours, mandatory unpaid overtime and verbal and physical abuse as an incentive to reach the quota that day. With families to feed and bills to pay, these workers have no other choice but to endure these common working conditions in sweatshops that dehumanize workers for the sake of “productivity.” With such a massive consumer demand, can apparel companies be successful without exploiting workers?

A few years ago, a unique little factory producing clothes for the brand Alta Gracia opened up in Villa Alta Gracia in place of the former one. Now, Martiza and her 150 colleagues are unionized and are treated with respect. Yenny has been able to pay for her daughter’s education and is no longer scraping by.

Alta Gracia, a collegiate-apparel brand, opened up as an experiment to prove that factories can succeed without forcing their workers to work long hours in

sweatshop conditions. In fact, they have proved this to be the case while paying workers a living wage, providing benefits, the right to unionize, and maintaining excellent health and safety standards.

When we walk into the sea of orange that is the VolShop, we might be thinking more about the size and brand of the clothing than the people who sewed the seams and labels, like Martiza and Yenny.

Perhaps it is because some of us would like to ignore the uncomfortable truth and perhaps others sincerely have no idea. The truth behind the apparel industry is one of exploitation and unsafe work conditions.

Too many times the real cost of a brand is carried by the factory workers producing the goods. Alta Gracia offers an escape from this. Branded with a big A, their clothing provides an alternative to clothing made in questionable conditions and supports the fair treatment of workers. And the catch isn’t outrageous prices that are unlike any other conventional brand, either. So we can get plenty of cool UT gear at relatively decent prices without the workers being treated like machines!

Already, the story behind this business model has resonated at UT. The Volshop has made space for the

food. Examples of ways to increase this percentage include purchasing: 1. Free trade coffee 2. Local produce, such as Grainger county tomatoes 3. Sustainably sourced seafood 4. Grass-fed beef 5. Organic milk In Aramark’s online marketing and branding, claims are being made and not acted upon. The corporate site boasts “environmentally friendly policies that support sustainability” as well as “an industryleading health and wellness platform to promote healthy living.” For our campus site, Aramark claims “to continually develop and implement sustainable solutions at the University of Tennessee.” Thus the outlined asks are in line with the image Aramark hopes to project.

In summary, UT students have no choice but to pay into an unsustainable, unhealthy, and unjust food system. We demand 20% real food on campus by the year 2020, increased transparency, and heightened awareness about sustainable and fair food systems. It is time for Aramark to live up to its policies and the image it wishes to create.

As a student population we have a unique opportunity; our demands will be heard whether they be for clothing produced in a living-wage factory or for a week to talk about sex. The pressure we can put on our universities can have major impacts on the lives of those making their living in a factory. Of course, one of the most important ways to support a cause like Alta Gracia is to buy the apparel. So be mindful the next time you go searching for some new UT gear and if you’re looking for a brand, look for the big A. HOMECOMING

100 years of homecoming Bradi Musil

Managing Editor On a chilly November day in 1916, UT hosted its first ever homecoming game.

The Volunteers faced off against the Vanderbilt Commodores, winning 10-6 in an upset victory that sparked such celebration that former UT President Brown Ayres was forced to cancel Monday classes, declaring the day a holiday.

In the 99 years since the first UT homecoming, few things have stayed the same.

UT still typically defeats the Commodores, and the festivities that follow, scattered throughout the Fort Sanders neighborhood, never disappoint.

But the homecoming you will experience this weekend is nothing like what took place almost 100 years ago. It has been molded by history and formed around tradition.

Here’s a brief history of how UT’s homecoming became the weeklong event it is today: Homecoming wouldn’t become an annual event on campus until 1925, after the First World War had ended. In 1943, homecoming was cancelled once again during wartime as students decided all funds that would have gone toward planning homecoming should be donated to the Red Cross or used to purchase war bonds.

In 1950, the university crowned the first homecoming queen.

In the 20 years that followed, the United States saw drastic change as civil rights movements swept across the nation and rattled universities the hardest. U.S. institutions were being challenged at every turn by younger generations who wanted to change the status quo.

How this culminated on UT’s campus during the 1970 homecoming was rather unique, however, compared to the demonstrations taking place at other universities.

“At that time, things were really changing on campus,” UT graduate Vince Staten said.

“UT was really dominated by fraternities and sororities, and this was the era of campus protests and all sorts of stuff were going on.”

In 1970, Staten was a weekly humor columnist for The Daily Beacon. And that year, he decided to run for homecoming queen.

What started as a joke in The Daily Beacon newsroom became front-page news as the former Beacon staff decided to run an article claiming that Staten was busy denying rumors of his unfounded candidacy.

However, students were suddenly inspired by the idea of a non-Greek, unconventional campaign.

“A lot of people were kind of tired of homecoming,” Staten said. “There were 26,000 students at UT at that time, and the winning homecoming queen candidate typically would

win with 300 votes out of maybe 1,500 total.”

The photo that ran alongside Staten’s weekly Beacon column showed him wearing a paper bag over his head, and soon students began donning paper bags around campus as a sign of support.

Staten’s name was never officially added to the voting ballot, but when Election Day came, 2,512 people wrote in his name. Staten said the first runner up only had about 310 votes.

He didn’t vote at all.

“We protested everything ... That was pretty much the way it was back then,” Staten said.

Staten was never crowned, as his candidacy was deemed invalid. Oddly, Staten was not disqualified for being male, but instead for his status as a graduate student.

“Back then, we were in the early days of gender equality, so they didn’t want to get in trouble that way,” he said.

After that, UT did not recognize another homecoming queen until 1982. And, in 1985, Shannon Whittington became the first African American woman to be crowned.

Alumni Attendance & Involvement About 300 alumni attended the first homecoming in 1916, representing the graduate classes from years as early as 1872.

Phyllis Moore, director of Alumni Affairs and a UT graduate herself, said alumni attendance has only increased over the years as the number of planned homecoming events grows.

Moore said she could easily see over 2,000 alumni visiting campus this homecoming weekend.

Moore, who has been on campus since 1993, said she enjoys working with alumni who come back to UT to see how the campus has transformed over the years.

“You offer campus tours and show the campus of today, and by doing that, alumni remember and share stories of how it was when they were here,” Moore said. “(Homecoming) offers alumni an opportunity to come back and experience campus as they did when they were students … Some people have been gone for 25, 30 or 50 years.

“You could imagine how different the campus looks now than it did in 1965.”

“You have students who marched when they were in the Pride of the Southland Band that come back and march again, and that’s really a blending of the past with the present,” Moore said.

Betty Myers, a member of the Band Alumni Council and photographer for the Alumni Band, said those who come back to march as alumni consider their career with Pride of the Southland band a life-long commitment.

Myers said there is one alumnus who has been marching every year since 1958.

How a halftime show made history Megan Patterson

Arts & Culture Editor Seventeen years ago, Don Ryder, director of bands, joined UT’s band program, and you can bet there hasn’t been a single football game where he hasn’t joined the Pride of the Southland Band in playing “Rocky Top.” Originally from Ohio, Ryder recalled being familiar with the university’s iconic song even in his youth.

However, what the rest of the nation didn’t know was where this anthem originated. For most Tennessee Volunteers, the song sprung out of the blue on Oct. 21, 1972 during the halftime performance of the Vols game against Alabama. Barry McDonald, the band’s arranger of music at the time, had come across the song through his multiple contacts in Nashville and worked the catchy tune into the halftime medley.

The crowd was hooked. According to Ryder, WJ Julian, director of bands, didn’t have any knowledge of the song, but had to respond to the enthusiasm of the crowd.

“If there’s a song that’s sort of a hit among the fans, you kick it out of what would have been a one-and-done deal for the halftime show and you put it in the folder that you play for the stands during the game,” Ryder said.

“That’s what happened — it got transferred over, and it just grew from there.”

Myers said the Alumni Band’s process has changed drastically just within the past few years.

Before former director of bands Gary Sousa incorporated the Alumni Band into the halftime show 15 years ago, Myers said the Alumni Band used to be just a small pregame production typically consisting of one song and a handful of alumni.

The Alumni Band today marches alongside the current Pride of the Southland band, performing a number of songs to rather complicated drills.

Stomp Fest Since 1999, the Office of Multicultural Student Life, the Black Cultural Programming Committee and the National Society for Black Engineers have hosted one of homecoming’s largest events: the Southeastern Stomp Fest.

This year marks the 16th anniversary of the Stomp Fest, a stepping competition between regional National Pan-Hellenic Council organizations.

become an official school song, to an adopted state song and as of this year, the number one song in college football. Surprisingly, this national favorite was conceived in a Gatlinburg hotel room.

Country duo Felice and Boudleaux Bryant were working on an album for Archie Campbell and hit a musical mental block, so they decided to have a little fun. In less than 15 minutes, “Rocky Top” was penned down, with little pomp and circumstance or knowledge that this creative exercise would become one of the duo’s most recognized works.

“I think when you look at music that has survived over the course of the years, it (Rocky Top) has those qualities,” Ryder said. “It has something catchy that people can grab on to; they can sing along with it.”

Despite having lyrics that evoke a community of mountaineers in the hills of Appalachia, “Rocky Top” is belted out by UT students and Knoxvillians alike, transforming images of a mountain heritage into a source of regional pride. To the most die-hard fan, this tune is never over-played.

“When they (the band) go out to the practice field on game day to warm up or stretch, the kids are actually playing it over the speakers. The excitement is still there despite them playing it hundreds of times throughout the season,” Ryder said. “I don’t think it’s ever grown weary for any of the musicians.”

School sentiment seems to be unanimous: Good ol’ Rocky Top, Rocky Top Tennessee.

Tanisha Jenkins, director of the Office of Multicultural Student Life, said the competition began as a way to give students in the NPHC fraternities and sororities on campus an opportunity to showcase their unique presence during homecoming weekend.

“Groups are expected to showcase their originality, precision, showman ship and just provide an overall good show for the campus community,” Jenkins said.

This is the first year that the Southeastern Stomp Fest will be held on a Friday and the first time in several years that the event will be hosted on campus.

Jenkins said the event moved off campus when it grew to be too big to host at the university. The decision to bring the competition back to UT grounds in the Alumni Memorial Building was made in an effort to “bring it back home to our campus community.”

Jenkins said she expects a sold out crowd on Friday night.

Today, the All Campus Events Committee plans events that incorporate this rich history while adding events to build new traditions, including this year’s addition of Fallapalooza and Chalk Ped Walk.

Here’s to 100 more years of bridging generations, breaking boundaries and backing cultural celebration.

Vols v. North Texas: The rematch of the last four decades Tanner Hancock News Editor

“We’re not that good a football team. Who would take us seriously?”

In the aftermath of North Texas’s 1975 upset over Tennessee, North Texas head coach Hayden Fry didn’t mind rubbing it in. In front of 72,670 fans in Neyland Stadium, the Mean Green succeeded in doing what many had thought impossible, and in the excitement of the post-game interview, Fry had no problem letting Tennessee know exactly what he thought.

“Now just being honest, I’m sure that when Tennessee scheduled us, everybody probably thought, ‘Don’t worry about North Texas State,’” Fry said, still celebrating from his team’s 21-14 upset over the formerly No. 10 ranked Vols. “I’m not surprised our team could win, because we’ve had the opportunities all season. But to do it in Tennessee was beyond our wildest dreams.”

What was a dream for the Mean Green very quickly became a nightmare for the struggling Vols, as the team soon discovered from their unexpectedly resilient Texas opponents. After a scoreless first quarter, the Vols got on the board first after running back Stanley Morgan drove it home across the goal line. An interception by Tennessee quarterback Gary Roach put the Mean Green in the red zone and back in the game, and an ensuing touchdown tied the game 7-7.

In a pattern that would continue to rear its ugly head for the rest of the game, strong defensive plays from the North Texas squad continued to keep them in the game, despite the Vols dominance in nearly every aspect of the matchup.

On the ensuing kickoff, a hard hit on returner Tennessee Terry Moore forced a fumble, giving North Texas an excellent field position that would eventually result in a touchdown and 14-7 lead. Following another scoreless third quarter with little offensive production on either end, starting quarterback Randy Wallace completed a two-yard pass with 4:39 left in the final quarter, tying the score and potentially averting an upset for the ages.

But, it wasn’t meant to be. On the ensuing kickoff, North Texas running back Sears Woods returned the ball for 98 yards, scoring the final touchdown and sealing the deal in a 21-14 upset victory for the Mean Green and certainly the lowest point for the Vols in what had begun as a promising season.

Staring at the scoreboard in the aftermath of the game, Tennessee head coach Bill Battle may have found it hard to believe that the team he had led to such success had fallen so far. Despite Battle’s post-game plea, “We need folks behind

us. We don’t need people tearing things down,” it would have been apparent to any Tennessee fan in the stadium that October day that the luster behind Tennessee’s football program had seen much better days. In Battle’s first season as head coach in 1970, the Vols went 11-1 overall, marked by a 24-0 win over Bear Bryant’s Alabama team as well as a Sugar Bowl Victory over Air Force.

That success, however, proved fading, as Battle never again defeated Alabama during his six year tenure with the Vols, even falling to 6-5 in his final season before his eventual replacement by Tennessee legend Johnny Majors.

As the clock ticked down to zero, a familiar disappointment fell over the stadium, the fans venting their frustration by booing the sidelines along with the broken promise of Tennessee success. Sitting in the stands that October day, longtime Vols fan Don Baskin recalls the feeling as a mixture of shock and disbelief at how far the Volunteers had managed to fall.

“The expectations for the whole season, and with them (Tennessee) being ranked within the top 10 early in the season, playing against North Texas State, it was a given that it was going to be a victory,” Baskin explained of fan expectations for the program. “I think the booing was the standpoint of the frustration of not playing well and letting a team of much less talent play hard and win.”

For a Volunteer team of 5-4, elusive wins have been a familiar theme throughout the 2015 season. In their four losses, Tennessee has fallen only by a combined 17 points, including blown leads of 17 and 14 points to Oklahoma and longtime rival Florida respectively. For Baskin, the feeling of a painful Tennessee loss isn’t a modern phenomenon but one that dates back 40 years.

“I’m sitting there after the game is over with, it’s like we lost this game to a nobody, but they deserved to win. Tennessee didn’t deserve to win.”

Coming into Saturday’s homecoming matchup, North Texas no longer look like the upstart program of 40 years ago, but rather a team struggling to stay afloat. Competing in Conference USA, North Texas will enter Neyland Stadium with a 1-8 record under interim coach Mike Canales, with previous head coach Dan McCarney fired earlier in the season after an 0-5 start.

With the Volunteers seeking their first consecutive bowl appearances since the 2009-10 seasons, Saturday’s game will prove not only to secure a postseason berth, but settle the score for a game older than any player set to compete Saturday. Because when it’s all said and done, the all-time record between the Mean Green and Vols still stands at 1-0, at least for the moment.

Refurbished Chevy to honor “Rocky Top” songwriters Heidi Hill

Assistant News Editor At last year’s homecoming game, Del Bryant, son of legendary “Rocky Top” songwriters Felice and Boudelaux Bryant, visited UT for the first time as the parade’s Grand Marshal.

Now the newly retired CEO of Broadcast Music, Inc., Del Bryant said in an October 2014 Beacon article that his parent’s most recognized song vocalized a “nostalgic plea for simple times that really resonates with everybody.”

But this time, homecoming attendees can expect something new to carry on the fame of the Rocky Top name — Boudelaux Bryant’s refurbished 1972 Chevy Blazer.

The Daily Beacon spoke with Del’s wife, Carolyn, to find out more about the Blazer’s makeover on History Channel’s Counting Cars, the journey to its first tailgate and the 50-year legacy embodied in its design.

DB: What are you and Del most looking forward to about Knoxville?

CB: We’re coming to Knoxville to tail-

gate for the very first time with our tailgating vehicle. We’ve never done it before and we have this vehicle ready to go, so we’ll be cooking up some ribs, some corn, some burgers, having something delicious to drink and inviting some in the parking lot to join us — mostly friends and those who are super enthusiastic about the car since it debuted on Counting Cars.

DB: Let’s talk about the car. How did that project come to fruition?

CB: The car was sold by my father-in-law (Boudleaux Bryant) in 1980 and it was bought by him in 1972 with very low mileage. He got tired of it and then he sold it to someone who worked for the family. They kept it up on blocks, they drove it very little and kept it in great shape. Then the family’s young couple — they were both going to pass away from cancer and they were putting their ducks in order for their twin boys, and they asked if we would like to buy the car back. They sold it back at about the same price my father-in-law had sold it to them. So, we got the car back and it’s a beloved vehicle from a beloved person that’s no longer with us. It’s very, very exciting to have some of that history back.

DB: How did the Blazer wind up on

Counting Cars?

CB: We were put in touch with the executive producer of Counting Cars since we’re a fan of the show’s star, Danny Koker, and we had learned of him through Pawn Stars as the car expert on that show. We learned that he had been contracted for his own show, so we contacted him through a friend and told him the story of the car and said that we would like to make it a tribute story to the folks who owned the vehicle and to the song. He’s also a musician and he’s got a band in Las Vegas that tours very successfully. He’s a BMI songwriter so we have that connection from Del’s former company. He loved the project (because) his father was a gospel singer. Danny, being a songwriter and the lead singer of a tour band, loved the connection to music and was eager to take on the project.

DB: What did it take to refurbish this car? Were there any obstacles?

CB: The car was in extremely good condition, so there were obstacles in turning it into a UT mobile. We didn’t know whether we needed to replace the engine, and we didn’t actually have to because it was in such great shape. Ultimately, we decided to make it more powerful than it was before,

so no real obstacles, just opportunities.

The best part about the car is the etched glass on the back — it has the beginning of the song “Rocky Top” etched in my fatherin-law’s handwriting.

DB: The original plan was to bring the car last year when Del was the grand marshal, but you guys had to wait until this year to bring the car to Knoxville. Any reasons for the delay?

CB: We hadn’t shot the reveal on the show yet, and the car was still in Las Vegas. They were running behind schedule in finishing the car and shooting the reveal.

DB: What do you think this car will bring to the UT community and those celebrating homecoming?

CB: I hope that it’s a visual reminder.

Rocky Top was just voted the top bluegrass song of all time, so the wonderful thing is that car embodies that song and it’s the embodiment of two people that lived the American Dream as did the rest of their song catalog. So, there’s a whole lot of love wrapped up in that car.

The Ewing Gallery’s new exhibit, “Distilled: The Narrative Transformed” by Pinkney Herbert opened on Monday evening with a small reception.

Herbert, an artist based in Memphis, Tennessee, brought together a collection of works spanning his thirty-year career as a professional artist. Most of the pieces on display are on loan from their owners and private galleries, including some from Herbert’s own galleries in Memphis and New York.

“I’m delighted to see all this work at once; it’s rather overwhelming,” Herbert said. “It takes me back in time. I can remember what I was doing that day when I painted that painting. I can remember different events in my life that influenced the work that appears.”

Herbert worked with Sam Yates, director and curator of the Ewing Gallery, to bring this exhibit to campus.

“Sam Yates, the curator here at the Ewing Gallery, and Michael Martin, they came to my studio in New York and in Brooklyn and they chose works to do this exhibition, this 30 year survey, and they have plans to travel with it to different colleges and museums over the next two or three years,” Herbert said.

The collection shows the transition from Herbert’s figurative work to a more abstract style. The gallery is divided into three periods, each influenced by the area Herbert was working in at the time.

“It really begins with self portraits, a sort of narrative southern tradition. Then living in New York City in the ‘80s, and then living in

Memphis in the ‘90s,” Herbert said. “And then it evolved and moved into abstraction, and now I’m continuing to move into digital prints and painting and drawing abstract lineage.”

Herbert considers abstract art to be a form of language that, while many may not appreciate it, has the potential to be as powerful as traditional art styles.

“Not everyone understands French, for instance, or another language,” he said. “And abstraction is a language and once you understand that language and once you learn where it’s coming from, you would understand it in the historical context and the context with art before.”

When Yates was selecting work for this exhibition, however, he saw a thread of abstraction even in Herbert’s earliest work.

“I think I’d back up and say even the earlier figurative work has more abstract qualities,” Yates said. “You can notice how the figure gets melted into the composition, and the viewer works to sort of see the figure. In a way, the figure becomes dissolved into the composition, and just the movement and the color in the drawing remains.”

Yates plans to work with other universities and museums to bring the exhibit to new audiences and to spread awareness for Herbert and contemporary abstract art.

Murray State University in Kentucky as well as the University of Alabama are universities the curators are considering visiting, before ending in an undisclosed New Orleans museum.

Currently, “Distilled: The Narrative Transformed” is on display at the Ewing Gallery in the Art & Architecture building, where the exhibit will stay until Dec. 13. More information can be found at ewing-gallery.utk. edu.

Student “rock artist� takes street art to new level Samantha Kennedy Contributor

On big game-days this season, students have arrived on campus bright and early to find a work of art spray-painted on the “Rock.�

Located in front of the Natalie L. Haslam Music Center, this 98-ton student message board has been around since the ‘60s with the purpose of eliminating illegal street art by giving students a place to paint. For years it has been covered in everything: hellos and goodbyes, sport championships, happy birthday messages, political endorsements and even marriage proposals. Anyone can paint the Rock — all you need is to show up and bring spray paint.

Payton Miller, junior in mathematics, has been receiving a lot of attention for her paintings on the rock. She painted it for the first time during her sophomore year and ever since she has been there, spending hours spray painting pictures at the Rock before every home game. “I’m pretty competitive with myself so that’s a big motivator. I like to go out there and see if I can learn more about the paint and train my eye to scale up images and improve from my last painting,� Miller said.

She claimed to have gained her spray painting skills from the art classes that she took in high school. “Art has always been a major hobby for me but I didn’t really start painting until high school,� Miller said.

One would think that with her spray painting skills that Miller is an art major, or at least takes art classes. But as of right now, Miller is a math major and has only taken one art class here at UT.

“I took a western art history course here freshman year and absolutely loved it,� Miller said. “I haven’t been able to take any more but really hope I’ll have the time to fit one or two in next year.�

Although she is a math major, Miller’s family roots run deep in medicine and she plans on attending medical school after she graduates.

She has already started looking at medical schools, mostly in Tennessee and Virginia and is currently interested in UT, ETSU, UVA and VCU Med. The first time Miller ever picked up a spray paint can was in high school when she had to spray paint a trashcan for FunFest. “I remember admiring how the paint went on so evenly and seemed to have so much more depth than what I was used to. But I also couldn’t find much use for it then,� Miller said.

Then the summer of her freshman year, she worked for a wedding boutique in Kingsport and had to spray paint one thousand wooden rods white for wedding wands. After that, she was so tired of spray painting that she did not pick up another rattle can — that is until she painted the Rock. “After that I got hooked,� Miller said. “I figured out the right way to use and appreciate the medium. Unfortunately, I don’t get to practice much, since the paintings I like to do are so big.�

Her first painting, the Lil Jon painting, only took about three hours. Her painting of Smokey took about ten hours to complete. In general, Miller said, her paintings take about an average of seven hours. “I love the style of all her artwork. It is very impressive how much effort and detail she puts into all the pieces,� Grace Scott, freshman in animal science, said.

Overall, Miller has painted the Rock nine times. She says her favorite painting is definitely the picture of Smokey with the checkerboard in the background. She also really likes her most recent painting, a picture of the Tennessee Walking Horse and says that it is a close second. “I think it is crazy how much time she has to spend on these during the night before the games. Especially since this art can not be saved, and other people cover it up in a few days,�

Scott said.

Miller has two little siblings: a brother who is a freshman at UT and a sister who is still in high school. They both are already getting involved in painting the rock with their sister. “I joke that it’s Lyle’s job to babysit me on

Friday nights,� Miller said. “He helps me lay down the base coats so he’s become a pretty active rock painter himself. My sister Grayson is still in high school but has also sat through Friday nights to help me paint.�

Even though Miller has only been painting the rock for a year, she has already acquired an unofficial fan base that comes out every morning before big home games to see her artwork. She plans on continuing to paint the rock until she graduates. “The encouragement from my friends and especially from my family is another big motivator. I like that people look forward to the surprise of what’s on the rock for game days,�

Lady Vols set to open up regular season play Trenton Duffer Copy Editor

Lady Vols head coach Holly Warlick has pushed defensive pressure as a focal point for the upcoming season, especially when it comes to the fast break.

So when the Lady Vols held Carson-Newman to only two points in transition during Monday’s exhibition game, the four-year coach knew that her words of pressuring in transition were finally sinking in.

“We preach and work on it every day,” Warlick said. “I thought at the beginning of this year, our transition defense was a little complicating, a little confusing. So, a couple of weeks out, we tried to simplify it, and I think that’s a positive for us.

“Transition is huge, especially in the SEC. It seems that when we struggle to beat teams, they have great transition offense. “... But I think it’s gotten better.”

Now, Central Arkansas comes to Knoxville on Sunday, and the Sugar Bears have a lot of players who can run the length of the court and get quick points in transition.

Having a lot of players to lean on is something Central Arkansas isn’t used to. After being rattled with injuries, dismissals and transfers,

the Sugar Bears finished with only nine available players on the team last year. They’ve turned things around since then, boasting an upgraded 14 players on the team this year.

Leading the charge for the preseason No. 7 team in the Southland conference will be the backcourt of Brianna Mullins and Maggie Proffitt, both of whom were selected to the preseason all-conference team. The junior duo combined for 24.5 points and a 35.5 percentage from beyond the arc last year.

“They lost a lot of starters, but you see tendencies,” Warlick said of the Lady Vols seasonopening opponent.

“They shoot the three. They penetrate. They move the ball. They’re scrappy kids. Are we bigger? Yes, but sometimes they’ll pull our post outside away from the paint. It’s just a different team. It’s just a different style – one that we don’t see quite often.”

The Lady Vols will take on the Sugar Bears of Central Arkansas this Sunday at 2 p.m. in Thompson-Boling Arena.

Wrapping up last week: The Lady Vols are fresh off a 101-59 exhibition victory over CarsonNewman on Monday that saw Mercedes Russell dropping the first double-double of her career.

Kortney Dunbar got her first career start at the forward position, dropping 15 points on seven of eight shooting. But Dunbar was

more excited about Russell dropping the doubledouble than she was about her own strong performance.

“I loved it,” Dunbar said. “Mercedes is one of the most genuine people you’ll ever meet, so seeing her inside, she’s so intimidating … There’s nothing more rewarding than seeing her come out on opening night and have a great night like she did.”

Injury Report: Tennessee may be short-staffed in the opening game against Central Arkansas this Sunday. The injury bug has bitten members of the Lady Vols team already this year, leaving a lot of players’ statuses this weekend up in the air.

Coach Warlick attempted to answer these questions in Tennessee’s media availability on Thursday, saying that she’s taking these injuries one day at a time.

“It’s still kind of day-to-day,” Warlick said. “I know for certain that Jaime (Nared) won’t be (ready). She still has a cast on. But other than that, I think it’s just kind of a trial, day-to-day thing.”

Warlick also confirmed that Nia Moore, who injured her ribs in the weight room late last week, pulled something in her ribs and that the senior is “a tough kid in a lot of pain.”

Diamond DeShields, who many fans are wanting to finally see play, is a game-time decision against the Bears.

Vols look to become bowl eligible against North Texas Jonathan Toye

Tennessee coach Butch Jones didn’t say much about North Texas this week.

That’s probably because there’s not too much to say.

The Vols enter Saturday’s homecoming game against North Texas at Neyland Stadium (TV: SEC Network, noon) as a 41.5 favorite, the most lopsided Tennessee line this season according to Vegas Insider.

That line is not by accident, as North Texas is — quite, frankly — an awful football team.

North Texas (1-8) ranks near the bottom of every statistical category in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Mean Green is No. 117 in points per game (17.6), No. 125 in points allowed (45.6), No. 108 in total offense (345.9), and No. 123 in total defense (541.3). (Note: there are 128 teams in the FBS.) North Texas compiled these stats against the No. 106 toughest schedule in America. The easy schedule hasn’t helped. The Mean Green has been outscored 410 to 158, losing by an average margin of 28. Portland State alone drubbed North Texas 66-7.

North Texas fired its coach Dan McCarney after that game, promoting offensive coordinator Mike Canales as the interim head coach.

Jones opened his Monday presser trying to identify some strengths of North Texas.

He didn’t say much, but he did praise the job Canales has done so far as the interim coach.

“Mike Canales is a great friend of mine,” Jones said. “I have known him for a very long period of time. I have admired him as a play caller, as a quarterback coach and as an offensive coordinator. He has done a great job in a difficult situation. You can now see their offense starting to take on his personality.

“Their quarterback, DaMarcus Smith, is an individual who can make plays with his legs and can throw the football. I think they are gaining confidence, offensively. Defensively, they have very good team speed.”

Smith has passed for 799 yards and has

rushed for 355, good for second on the team.

However, he is only completing 47.1 percent of his passes. The defense might possess some speed, but it shouldn’t pose a threat to Tennessee’s offense.

Senior offensive lineman Kyler Kerbyson, however, still brushed off the assumption that Saturday’s game will be a blowout, saying that nothing is decided until the game starts.

You definitely want to take it seriously,” Kerbyson said. “No game is set in stone. No game is, so you have to go in with the same mentality you do every other game, lock in and understand that these guys are good. They are football players. They put their pants on just like us. We have to be focused and understand that every snap is valuable.”

A focused Tennessee should take care of business — and take care of it pretty early, giving freshman quarterback Quinten Dormady a good opportunity to run the offense on Saturday.

Dormady has only had one opportunity to receive extensive playing time this season, but he shined during that time. Dormady completed six of nine passes for 93 yards and a touchdown in Tennessee’s 55-10 win against Western Carolina.

Despite the lowly opponent, a Tennessee win would still carry significance. It would be the Vols’ sixth win, making them bowl eligible for two straight seasons. It would be the fastest Tennessee (5-4) has reached bowl eligibility since 2007.

That might be all the motivation Tennessee needs to play against North Texas.

“Our focus is always to be 1-0, but we definitely talk about that sixth win and it’s very important to our program,” freshman linebacker Darrin Kirkland said. “We are looking forward to it.”
