Hurd down and out Star running back out for Tennessee Trenton Duffer Sports Editor

Rob Harvey Asst. Sports Editor Tennessee’s soap opera season just got even more convoluted. Junior running back Jalen Hurd has decided to transfer from the team, head coach Butch Jones said on Monday, Oct. 31. Jones said that he spoke to Hurd on Monday morning, when the junior running back informed him of the transfer. “I support him on that,” Jones said. “I’m very, very thankful for everything that he’s done for our football program.” Hurd entered the season as the Vols’ No. 1 running back and was only 891 yards away from breaking the Vols’ all-time rushing lead entering the season. He finishes the season with 122 rushes for 451 yards and three touchdowns – just 440 yards short of the crown in sixth place. There was no reason specifically given for Hurd’s departure. Jones said that it could be the complications of a long football season but that he “doesn’t want to speak for Jalen.” “There’s a lot of things that went into that decision,” Jones said. “I value our relationship and have a lot of respect for that young man and wish him nothing but the best.” Hurd supposedly suffered an injury before

the Texas A&M game – an injury that the staff called a “lower extremity” at the time. Since being injured against the Aggies, Hurd had only 31 carries for 86 yards and one touchdown. Some reports also have Hurd moving to the wide receiver or tight end position, but no confirmation from Jones or Hurd has been given. Hurd finishes his Tennessee career with 589 rushes for 2,638 yards and 20 touchdowns. He averaged 4.7 and 4.6 yards per carry in his first two seasons but saw that total dip down to 3.7 this season. That and his 64.4 yards per game this season were both career lows. Alvin Kamara, Hurd’s backup and a team captain, is currently injured and will not play this weekend against Tennessee Tech (TV: SEC Network, 4 p.m.). Jones said on Monday that he hopes to have Kamara for the Kentucky game on Nov. 12. John Kelly is the next running back up for the Vols, and offensive coordinator Mike DeBord spoke highly of the sophomore on Monday. “John Kelly’s been playing, and he’s been doing a really good job,” DeBord said. “We feel comfortable with John Kelly, so we’ll keep going … We have great confidence in him, and he’s displayed that.
