Joyride petitions for tipping option via VolCard Heidi Hill Assistant News Editor Joyride has steered its way into the hearts and pockets of UT students since the Nashville-based company opened its services to campus in this summer. With approximately 30 student drivers, it’s no wonder that Grant Rosenblatt, Joyride Knoxville owner and general manager, pursued his staff’s recommendations for the taxi-like service, which operates solely on tips, to explore the option to tip with a VolCard. “When we first came to Knoxville, we had no intention of making that an available option for students,” Rosenblatt said. “But when we saw that there were merchants off-campus, selling their things to students, we thought ‘why not us?’”
Unfortunately, the request was denied by the VolCard office for reasons that still remain unclear. Rosenblatt commented that the reasoning given was that the business didn’t meet the correct “criteria” required of a business party or entity seeking inclusion in the Off-Campus Program. Bill Strickland, VolCard director of operations, said he acknowledged Joyride’s request as one with great potential, but that every request must be evaluated on a “case-by-case basis” as the Off-Campus Merchants Program is a new offering from UT. Though all merchants to date have been foodrelated, Strickland commented the office attempts to balance student and “viable merchant interest” to determine if requests can be pursued. Strickland also stressed that Joyride’s customer base served a population larger than UT students, thus placing a potential roadblock for a successful

petition. “It’s always possible if there is significant student interest in this service, if we believe it is a good fit for the community and if the cost model to participate would prove to be financially viable over the long term,” Strickland said. Liam Aronoff, sophomore in marketing and Joyride student driver, explained that he and his coworkers formulated the petition, now with 65 signatures, after countless comments from students asking if they could use their VolCard to tip. “Gradually, as we started growing as company, we had (that request) more and more,” Aronoff said. “We knew there were businesses on the Strip that were already taking VolCard, and so we thought maybe we can join their ranks and make our company even more convenient for students.” See JOYRIDE on Page 3
