CRIME LOG Hoskins Library 1400 Cumberland Avenue, 1st and 2nd floor August 24, 2015 At approximately 12:25 p.m., a UTPD officer was dispatched to the UTPD lobby for a report of assault. The reporting party stated while she was looking for an item at Hoskins Library, a member of the facilities staff followed her and hugged her. The reporting party stated the facilities workers made her feel uncomfortable and she left the area after the incident.

Tom Black Track 1809 Volunteer Blvd. West August 25, 2015 At approximately 10:49 p.m., a UTPD officer observed two male subjects at Pat Summitt and Volunteer Blvd. staggering down the sidewalk. After passing both subjects on his bicycle, they began yelling at the police officer. Upon contact, the officer asked if the individuals were in need of police assistance and determined that both males were intoxicated and under 21.

Both males were arrested by citation for underage drinking and one was additionally charged for possessing fraudulent identification.

Presidential Court Building 1017 Francis Street August 26, 2015 At approximately 4:35 p.m., contact was made with a complainant who reported the theft of a golf cart. The golf cart was unsecured at the time of the incident. The incident occurred between Aug. 20 at approximately 11:00 p.m. and Aug. 21 at 5:00 a.m.

Hess Hall 1620 Melrose Place August 26, 2015 A UTPD officer met with a resident of Hess Hall who reported their wallet had been stolen from their dorm room. A report was taken and a UTPD case card issued.

Strength in Numbers: Exceptional turnout inspires SGA enthusiasm Staff Report

For the first time in recent years, approximately 50 students attended a Student Government Association interest session as a way for the student body to interact and get involved with SGA. The event was scheduled before the Aug. 31, the SGA interest form deadline.

“As the first year council adviser, it was exciting to see both the number and quality of people who showed up,” Elisabeth Logan, first year council adviser, said. “From the conversation I had with the students there, it seems like we have a very enthusiastic crowd looking to get involved with student government this year. I look forward to getting to know some of them throughout the next few weeks as we begin our interview processes.”

The following Tuesday, SGA held a Senate Orientation for its new members, discussing future responsibilities as well as forming SGA’s new mission statement for the 20152016 school year.

During the orientation, SGA senators

brainstormed ideas and values to include within their mission statement, information on the bill writing process, parliamentary process and procedural notes for the first SGA Senate meeting schedule for Sept. 8.

Their efforts converged into this updated statement: “In light of the Volunteer Spirit, the mission of the 2015-2016 Student Senate is to foster the growth and change of the entire student body through relevant legislation by increasing our engagement and cultivating an inclusive campus culture.”

College of Communications senator Alex Swisher reflected on her experience meeting with the governing body as a newly initiated member.

“I enjoyed getting to meet my fellow senators for this upcoming school year as well as the executive team,” Swisher said. “There was so much enthusiasm in the room, and I can tell we are all ready to take on the challenges that this school year will face.”

SGA will be hosting an “All Vol Tailgate” for students on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 1-4:30 p.m. at the Humanities Plaza. The free event will feature food, music and games and is open to all students.

I AM THAT GIRL at UT wants to ‘support and encourage’ Alahnah Ligon Contributor

“Feminism is the radical notion that women are human beings.” - Cheris Kramarae Reflecting the notions of feminist Cheris Kramarae, I AM THAT GIRL is a nationwide council of women with over 170 chapters across the country designed to foster a rising community of empowered women on UT’s Campus.

President and founder of the I AM THAT GIRL chapter at UT Carlie Russell sees the movement as a proactive way of changing the often damaging gender norms society places upon women.

“I read a newsletter every morning from The Skimm, and they featured I AM THAT GIRL,” Russell said of the first time she discovered the organization. “I was curious, so I followed the link to their website. I was automatically inspired by the message of I AM THAT GIRL and knew that UT was in desperate need of a chapter.”

Russell says the primary goal of the I AM THAT GIRL program on campus is to support an equal community for all.

“I AM THAT GIRL’s biggest goal is to create a truly judgement and fear free place where students, boys and girls alike, can come and express their concerns with the movement for gender equality,” Russell said.

“We want to create a conversation about equality on campus in a way that it has never been done before.

We are also hoping to work with leading campus organizations to change the way students treat and perceive each other.”

Unlike certain organizations on campus, Russell says all members will benefit from the program by having their individual voices and ideas heard and taken seriously. With no requirements for membership and no rejection process in place, Russell hopes I AM THAT GIRL’s UT membership will reflect a wide variety of student ideals.

“We’re here to support and encourage, not put down and correct,” Russell said. “You have the right to have whatever opinions and beliefs that you do, as long as it doesn’t harm other people, and we want to give students a place to say those things and complete those actions.”

Arnold also expressed her excitement toward getting involved with UT’s I AM THAT GIRL group of students in an open forum of safe communication on campus.

“It’s going to be great to get together as a group and feel comfortable and able to share anything. This group is open to all people. It’s a safe place on this campus to be yourself.”

In addition to fostering a wide variety of student dialogue, UT’s I AM THAT GIRL chapter is involved in community outreach programs hosted by the group at least once every month.

“We want to have a monthly community outreach event, wherein we volunteer for local non-profit organizations and create a conversation about our organization in the local community,” Russell said. “We want to have an overall positive impact on Knoxville however we can.”

UT’s I AM THAT GIRL chapter offers members exclusive scholarships and internships available only to members of the club.

UT fraternity life faces stricter regulations on and off campus, suggests “wet campus” Alahnah Lignon Contributor

Animal House. Revenge of the Nerds. Project X. 22 Jump Street.

These are the movies that have forged the wild, party-animal image of Greek life for decades—but for the UT administration, the time for change is long past due.

Three regulations have surfaced over the past months, including an event registration form that requires fraternities to submit requests for particular events and required “house parents” intended to guide interfraternal decision-making and leadership.

The Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life will use the event registration document as a “paper trail” to track all fraternity activity, according Alexander Clark, a senior in supply chain management and Interfraternity Council president.

Clark also explained that changes made to

the Student Conduct Policy could be a major drawback for UT fraternities, citing a “thinning” of Interfraternity Council representation from eight members to one. A revision to the Student Conduct Policy would result in the first such revision in over 30 years.

In addition to this revision, Clark said UT fraternities will host a “house parent,” or adult mentor intended to advise all fraternity members in each house. Adult mentors are not currently present at every fraternity house on campus, but most houses, including Kappa Sigma and Phi Sigma Kappa, are housing these parents through fraternal funds.

Clark said this situation is far from ideal.

“When you have a 35-year-old trying to tell a 20-year-old how to live it’s almost like your parents are back here and we all know that doesn’t work really well,” Clark said.

Clark said he has also recently noticed an increased police presence on fraternity row causing stricter enforcement of UT’s dry campus policy which prohibits the consumption of alcohol on campus.

Undeclared sophomore Gus Darden explained in a Daily Beacon guest column that for most students, UT’s strict alcohol policy only drives the fraternity “party scene” to the often dangerous Fort Sanders neighborhood.

“It is putting students in a much more dangerous place than they would be if they were just able to do it in a controlled environment on campus,” Darden said.

Earlier this month, the suspect of a shooting forced his way into a Fort Sanders home and demanded refuge from police.

Darden said he believes these and other recent events serve as ample reason for the university to abandon its current alcohol policy in favor of a “wet campus” model that would allow for drinking on university grounds.

“What I really hope is that the administration will try to work with us and give us the ability to have parties on campus,” Darden explained. “It

really makes more sense and it is much safer.”

According to Clark, UT administrators and the Interfraternity Council met recently to discuss the potential for allowing alcohol on campus and changing the current policy to that of a “wet campus” policy.

Should UT’s dry campus status be revoked, Clark said, the dangers presented by the Fort Sanders area would diminish, given that students could host and attend parties in a “more controlled environment” rather than search for outlying venues to drink under age.

“You do it responsibly,” Clark said of the potential switch. “Have it in your own house, your own venue, where there are no unknown variables. It keeps everybody safer and helps everybody have a better time too.”

Interfraternity Council member, cited UT’s Pi Kappa Alpha 2012 “butt-chugging incident” as a major factor in pushing for the regulatory changes that will take effect this year.

“That’s when they really started enforcing those regulations a lot more and really lost a lot of trust in the Greek population,” Gatlin said.

Though Clark admitted the number of regulations has increased over the last two years, he said these changes are designed to prevent future incidents rather than a reaction to a single event.

“You can blame it on [Pi Kappa Alpha], or you can really just blame it on the media,” Clark said. “Think of it as preventative maintenance.

They are more or less trying to prevent issues before they happen.”

As an active IFC member, Gatlin said he feels fraternities are disproportionately targeted for illegal activities compared to the general student body.

“In our eyes, we try to be leaders around campus, but when the administration has no trust or confidence in us, then it’s a little frustrating to experience that kind of tunnel vision and attention on Greek life,” Gatlin said.

Clark admitted that while changes to the UT Greek life are extensiven, he maintained that they are necessary to insure modernization and safety are brought to all students on campus.

“It is part of something we’re wanting to do to modernize our Greek system,” Clark said.

“Having your parents on campus could be a bad thing, but there is always a time and place where you could also use some wisdom.”

The Interfraternity Council leader recognized the primary objective as creating measures that prevent incidents and promote transparency between the council and UT administrators.

“I think that’s the take away of anything here,” Clark said. “We’re stressing that transparency, that communication and we’ve done a great job of that.”

Tomato Head brings the party to downtown Knoxville Jesse Bellows

Contributor Last Saturday night, the popular restaurant Tomato Head threw a huge folk-rock soirée for its 25th year as an innovating and risk-taking temple of healthy food.

Thousands of people poured in throughout the night to eat, listen to the music and spend time with friends and family. And, whether they knew about the concert or not, everybody was there because of the Tomato Head.

The concert was free for all patrons, so anyone could pop a squat and listen to hours of free live music.

The beer was endlessly on tap with the purchase of a $2 wristband from the Tomato Head booth. All of the proceeds from these sales went straight to the Knoxville History Project, which is only fitting considering the Tomato Head’s deep roots in the city.

“The Tomato Head just kept taking risks and taking chances and trying different things. In 1990, it seemed crazy to have outdoor seating in the city. Also, the idea of no smoking, people smoked in 1990, and it pissed them off to have a restaurant that was no smoking. That was

completely alien,” Jack Neely, an affiliate of the Knoxville History Project, said.

Twenty-five years ago downtown Knoxville would have sooner sank into the mountains than expect a bustling Saturday night crowd. Back then there was only an old Watson’s Department store and a few lunch places for the business men and women of the city.

Tabitha Bean, a project manager of sorts at the Tomato Head, recalled her early memories of the pizzeria.

“When I was in high school and I’d tell my mom that I was going to eat at the Tomato Head, and she’d say, ‘No you’re not. You’re not going there by yourself,’” Bean said. “You wouldn’t want to walk around here at night, for sure.”

They were the first restaurant in the area to experiment with craftsmen food and to always have vegan and vegetarian options on the menu.

The restaurant believed in its food enough to know that people would come.

Now everyone comes to enjoy the downtown limelight. Seeing the shindig on Saturday makes it almost unbelievable that this area was once desolate, it was that packed with people.

The square was full of families with children, packs of teenagers, hipsters and hippies, as well as the old couple who just wanted a night out together. Street performers entertained with

• Photo courtesy of Tomato Head bags of tricks and quippy remarks, while the bands rocked every piece of Knoxville with everything they had in them.

The performances were more than just fanfare—the bands made it a point to give a closely knit community feel.

It was really exciting for the crowd to see that all of the bands had local connections to the restaurant. Exit 65 used to practice in the Tomato Head back in the ‘90s when both the band and the restaurant were trying to make a name for

themselves. And, in a perfectly sentimental performance, a member of Exit 65 brought up his daughter to play with the band onstage to share in the history and heritage that has been formed by the Tomato Head.

For a couple who were visiting from Pittsburgh for a weekend getaway, the event was just as much fun as it would be for someone who knows about the history.

“While we were eating, I was really enjoying the music,” John List said.

Finally, closing out the night was Scott Miller and the Commonwealth.

“Scott Miller is a guy who has a national following,” Neely said. “I actually followed him up the east coast and he’s got fans everywhere — from here to New York and Hoboken and Philadelphia. He’s the headliner.”

The night really picked up when they took the stage at 8 p.m. They brought an indisputable rock-ominous vibe for all the excited guests that were just looking for a reason to have a good time. The crowd sang and cheered with every heart-pumping song and guitar solo to end on the highest note possible.

So, in the end it was another successful Saturday night in Market Square thanks to the Tomato Head.

NEW MUSIC MONDAYS

Beach House- “Depression Cherry” Beach House’s Alex Scally and Victoria Legrand have tweaked their sound over the past ten years, but they still consistently draw listeners in with their hypnotic harmonies.

For fans of the band’s past work, their fifth studio album is not likely to disappoint.

For those unfamiliar with Beach House, don’t be misled by the summery sense that the band’s name might seem to imply. For this indie dream-pop duo, ethereal melodies and synthetic sounds are the rule, and Depression Cherry is no exception.

“Levitation” opens up the album, imploring listeners to immerse themselves in the music with the inviting lyrics “You should see/ There’s a place I want to take you.”

A generally slow tempo is consistent throughout the album; more upbeat songs include “Space Song,” “10:37,” and “Beyond Love.” The album features a nice incorporation of various instrumentals — from guitar to organ — paired with its synthetic sounds.

Atlas Genius- “Inanimate Objects”

Critics have described Beach House’s work as evocative of emotion with ‘blank sentimentality’ — their music creates an atmospheric backdrop for listeners to interpret the dreamy textures and lyrics in their own way.

Lead single “Sparks” is a highlight from the album and features lyrics that are characteristically open for interpretation.

“You go to school, you follow all the rules, you live inside / Realize there’s something in your eyes, you’re back again / From the spine rising through the mind, you give it up / Just like a spark / It’s a gift taken from the lips, you live again.”

Listeners are left to determine what exactly that “spark” is.

Overall, this album doesn’t stray too far from the beaten track of Beach House’s past sound, but is just fresh enough to keep things interesting. Depression Cherry provides nine tracks that are perfect light listening for studying — or daydreaming.

With the release of their sophomore album, Australian alternative rock band Atlas Genius brings a diverse new group of tracks without straying incredibly far from the sound of their 2013 album, “When It Was Now.” Lead singer Keith Jeffery said this album is intended to be ‘a lot darker’ and ‘a bit more aggressive’ than their first.

Upon first listen, the songs don’t sound particularly dark. Many of them have a dancey sound similar to “Trojans,” the 2011 debut single that first brought attention to the band.

The overall vibe of the album is one that calls to mind groups like Walk the Moon and Grouplove.

However, some of the album’s lyrics do provide that dark aggressiveness that the band strove for, like in the track “Where I Belong” when Jeffery sings, “I hope the cracks open up and swallow me whole/ Down and down and I go, right where I belong.”

Similar lyrics can be found throughout the album, fitting with the expansive feel that many of the tracks evoke, like in “Molecules.”

“We steal the molecules from the dead / We liberate inanimate objects / Is this a path of will up ahead? / Or are we just destined to get what we get?”

There’s a little bit of disconnect between the almost uplifting sound of the album and the existential lyrics sung throughout, but that’s not to say that Inanimate Objects isn’t worth a listen. It just feels a lot more punk and brooding when you pay attention to the words.

The album does string it tracks together well, flowing effortlessly between some different tempos and levels of instrumentation.

Overall, the album seems to be a positive and successfully ‘darker’ continuation of Atlas Genius’s career.

Finding growth and shared perspectives in a classroom

An Experiment in Happiness

Recently, I started thinking a lot about how important it is to make growth in life a top priority.

My life is full of relationships, classes, jobs and many other complex aspects that help make me who I am. The actions and events that we take part in everyday shape us into the people we will become for the rest of our lives.

That being said, I want to shape myself by spending time with people in school, at work, or anywhere that will help me grow.

Growth can come from subtle places like conversing with a stranger, speaking out about something you believe in, or going somewhere that you have never been before.

There are many ways to promote growth in life, and an example that took me by surprise this week happened during one of my classes. I am currently enrolled in a class with a majority of people that studied, traveled or lived abroad, and the dynamic of the class creates new realizations in me each day. The last class I went to sparked a thought I never had before, but it had sparked it in a different way. It helped me

to take notice of the beauty in our world. Travel helps open your eyes to other cultures, new people and beautiful places. I felt the growth of travel before, but I never knew I could feel it right here in Knoxville.

Through this class, I realized that the growth of travel can occur without any travel happening at all.

People can cause that growth and provide a glimpse into culture, viewpoint and lifestyle that, until now, I thought only travel could do. Being in this class with so many people from around the world helps me comprehend the lives they live and recognize how inspiring each person in this world really is.

Everyone in this class is different. We all have different ways of thinking and we are all very diverse, but at the same time, we are also very similar. The mindset is the same. We all identify with one another on issues such as, travel, growth, experience and adventure. Many believe they could never have something in common with people from other places, but this class has shown me and everyone else in it that we all have connections with one another.

“Welcoming to all and hostile to none. It’s a phrase we aspire to live by on our campus.” These are the words that greet you in bold when you open up http://www.utk.edu/diversity/.

Last week, our Office of Diversity and Inclusion wrote a post about gender inclusion on their page.

Written by Donna Braquet, Director of the Pride Center at UT, the post encourages students and faculty to be aware of inclusive pronoun language that accompanies gender identities outside of the traditional binary system. That is to say, there are people who don’t identify as male or female at UT, and they should be addressed as appropriate. This is not a policy change. No one is making you do anything. It is simply a notification that this is how some people prefer to be called.

This post has made more than a few people uncomfortable, including Todd Starnes, a potato loaf disguised as a Fox News pundit. In his opinion article on Friday, Starnes writes, “There you have it, folks. His and Hers is no longer good enough at the University of Tennessee – where they are willing to sacrifice anything for the sake of gender inclusivity – including common sense. I wonder if they’ve got a gender neutral word for idiot?”

Tennessee state legislators have also weighed in their thoughts on this thing that doesn’t affect them at all. State Senator Mae Beavers said this about our initiative for inclusivity: “It’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard … The idea a child would want

to be called by a gender neutral term is absolutely ridiculous. It’s getting so crazy in this country.”

Okay, two things. First, we’re not children. The vast majority of us are old enough to vote and serve in the military. Second, why is calling someone by a preferred name such a crazy idea? Why is it that conservatives, those so quick to call on the teachings of Jesus, are the most hateful and close-minded of people, especially in our various levels of legislature?

You know what’s really crazy and ridiculous, Beavers? You and Todd Starnes. The fact that you’re too lazy and shallow to learn a couple words that might make someone feel welcome wherever they are. This isn’t some liberal agenda. This is love. Love for our non-conforming neighbors. You know, that thing your boy Jesus talked about a lot? If you go back and read The Bible, JC really didn’t hang out

in common with you. Learn to find the connections within us all. Use people to grow, and let people use you to grow. Listen to everyone’s story and try to understand life through the eyes of others.

People are a key source of growth for me. The people around us cultivate growth within us. No matter who we are, the people we spend our time with the most have a great effect on us. I strive to spend time with the people that open my mind to acceptance, make me question my own beliefs and illustrate the love and goodness of humanity.

I challenge you this week to step away from the comfort of routine and grow yourself. Talk to someone that you always wanted to talk to but never have.

Take a weekend trip somewhere you have always wanted to visit but never had the time.

Growth begins where comfort ends. The only chance we have to be better versions of ourselves is to attempt growth in every possible way.

with the likes of you (politicians). Instead, he spent a lot of time with the members of society that didn’t exactly fit in.

I could not be more proud of my university in this moment. In the midst of crushing stupidity by those that govern us at the state level, members of the UT community are standing up for those who have been oppressed by the fundamentalist conservative agenda for too long. I know the words may sound weird at first, but in reality, it’s not about us. It’s about letting our classmates know that we support them and care for them.

After some thought, I think the words are pretty great. It’s also exciting to see language changing right before our eyes, and this time for the better. The word “selfie” wasn’t exactly an improvement to our lexicon. I can’t wait until someone asks me to address them as “ze.” Going forward, I ask my fellow Vols to think not only of themselves, but our transgender and non-binary gender identifying neighbors as well. They have a long journey to go in terms of social acceptance and familiarity, and this was a positive step forward.

And just for your information, my preferred pronoun is “he.”

Why would a rapper named Tity Boi feel a need to rebrand himself?

Whatever the reason, the artist now known as 2 Chainz raised an enormous amount of hype for his performance Saturday night.

Celebrating their 12th birthday, HOT 104.5 co-hosted the event alongside Carleo Entertainment in the Old City’s Courtyard, located behind Southbound, the Pilot Light and Barley’s taproom.

The 18+, rain or shine event guaranteed an

exciting performance for attendees, which led to its eventual sell-out early on Friday. Opening performances from Mac Sosa, Babi Mac, DJ Eric B and DJ Sagz helped start the night in motion as fans continued to flood the venue.

Mac Sosa, real name Brian Jones from Oak Ridge, credits Knoxville, in part, for the huge turnout. “The atmosphere at the Courtyard is amazing,� Jones said. “Bigger venues bring larger crowds and I enjoyed seeing people cheering from the decks above. Surrounded by the party atmosphere in the Old City, it just made for an exciting evening.�

Championship ‘ultimate goal’ for senior runner Shane Switzer

Staff Writer If you ask Director of Track and Field/Cross Country Beth Alford-Sullivan about her expectation for All-American senior cross country runner Chelsea Blaase, she’ll say she expects her to compete for a National Championship.

She offered a warning with that though.

“We have to manage our expectations,” Alford-Sullivan said. “Speaking specifically for cross (country), she came onto the scene last year, the first time she qualified (for the National Championships.) She had set her goal to be top 10, and honestly when I had the first conversation with her I thought it might be a little ambitious. As her season progressed, you could see she was in that kind of shape and competitive spirit that she was going to pull off her goal.”

Pull off her goal she did indeed. Last year, Blaase had three second place finishes, one third place and a win at the Alabama Crimson Classic meet. At the 2014 NCAA Cross Country National Championship, 40 seconds separated Blaase in tenth place and the first place finisher.

“You sit down and start fresh again ...” AlfordSullivan said. “You don’t say I want to be top five, you have to kind of say ‘I want to win.’

The single goal for the fall cross country, the big goal, is to be in a position to win the national championship.”

Still, Alford-Sullivan knows other runners will have the same goal and will have the ability to win the championship. Alford-Sullivan reminds Blaase of that fact and tells her that they must do the right thing every day to accomplish Blaase’s goal of winning; that winning the national cham-

pionship comes down to that day, and she has to be at her best when her best is demanded.

Blaase gave a very quick and emphatic response when asked about her national championship goals.

“Yes,” Blaase said. “A national championship is my ultimate goal. It’s always been my goal since I was little, and it’s awesome to know that I have a chance and I’m going to shoot for it.”

For Blaase, though, it doesn’t just end with cross country. This past year, she competed for the Vols in indoor and outdoor track. In her meets during the indoor season, she never finished lower than fourth and was ranked in the top 10 in the country all year. During the outdoor season, her lowest finish was seventh at the Stanford Invitational.

At the Indoor and Outdoor National Championship, Blaase finished fourth and sixth, and earned All-American honors. She became Tennessee’s first ever All-American in the 10,000 meter as a result of her sixth place at the Outdoor National Championships.

With all she has accomplished and been through, one may not expect her to get nervous before a race, but she still takes steps to calm her nerves.

“I call and talk to my mom,” Blaase said.

“That’s what I do before pretty much every race.

If I’m getting nervous or a little anxious, I’ll just call my mom and talk to her for a while, and she always calms me down. I don’t know how; I think it’s just a mom thing.”

She also looks to her head coach for guidance too. Alford-Sullivan was a distance runner at the University of Minnesota and knows where Blaase is at and what she needs to do to get where she wants to be. Blaase said she trusts Alford-Sullivan completely and will follow what

she prescribes.

Part of that prescription is practicing with the men’s cross country team.

With the transition the track and field/cross country team went through last year, and the women’s cross country team being so young, Blaase was without training partners, so in stepped the men’s team.

“It gives me a huge advantage,” Blaase said.

“When I’m out there racing with the girls I think, ‘I race with guys, this isn’t that bad.’”

Alford-Sullivan said that Blaase training with the guys has been not only beneficial for her, but for them as well. She said the guys have been pushed a little, and it has helped them improve. Red-shirt freshman Drew Kelley is one that has helped and been helped by Blaase.

“Every workout we do with her, she always pushes herself a lot more than anyone else,” Kelley said. “Even after practice she goes more for it than anyone else; it’s always about going the next step, and doing as much as she possibly can to make herself better.”

Vols’ opener brings anticipation, optimism

You know it’s football season when VFL films releases a hype video narrated by former Vol Inky Johnson.

There is a reason VFL films released the video on the Sunday before the Vols’ first football game — to remind us that football season is finally here.

Sure, Tennessee has been practicing for nearly a month now, and while you might

have occasionally read the injury reports or checked to see if there were any movements within the depth chart, you don’t religiously follow Tennessee football news until the week before the first game.

That’s because for most people, Tennessee’s football season doesn’t start until the week before the first game.

Most normal people, especially students, don’t follow every fall training camp practice.

Students have busy schedules and are so wrapped up in the present that they don’t have time to follow a team whose first game is three weeks away.

But on the Monday before UT’s first game, the season doesn’t seem so far away.

Now, when Butch Jones says a player had a good practice, there is a chance he is starting on Saturday. If a starter practices poorly, he might yield his starting spot to someone behind him on the depth chart.

Suddenly, every word Jones utters carries more weight.

UT records pair of draws in Virginia Staff Report The Tennessee women’s soccer team came away with a pair of draws in Virginia over the weekend.

In their first contest, Liberty came out of the gates quickly with a shot seconds into the match and Tennessee had several chances late in regulation and both overtime periods, but the Vols and Lady Flames played to a scoreless draw on Friday at Osborne Stadium.

Tennessee (1-0-2) finished with an 18-17 shot advantage after Liberty (0-2-1) outshot them, 9-6, in the first half.

Tennessee redshirt senior goalkeeper Julie Eckel(1-0-2) and Liberty’s Holly Van Noord (0-21) made eight saves each. Eckel yet to allow a goal this season (310 minutes).

Anna Bialczak led UT with six shots and four shots on goal. Amy Neal had five shots and two on goal.

Tennessee had two great looks in the second overtime period. In the 102nd minute, Neal weaved through defenders to fire from outside the 18, only to be turned away by Van Noord with a dive near the right post. Bialczak broke loose down the left side in the 108th and fired a rocket shot near the box, but Van Noord was there to make the stop.

Regulation ended in thrilling fashion. In 89th minute, Neal broke loose to reach a ball played back to the Liberty box with Van Noord deflecting the ball as soon as it left Neal’s foot. Van Noord made a diving save on a header by Neal seconds later after a UT corner kick.

On Sunday, Mackenzie Gouner scored in the 69th minute to get UT on the board first, but Virginia Tech scored an 86th-minute equalizer and Tennessee earned a 1-1 draw against the No. 7 Hokies on Sunday at Thompson Field.

The Hokies (3-0-1) outshot the Vols (1-0-3), 23-11, and had nine corner kicks to UT’s three.

Julie Eckel (1-0-3) turned in a gutsy performance in goal. She was credited with five saves and withstood Virginia Tech surges late in both overtime periods.

UT came close to a winner in the first overtime period when Amy Neal’s 93rd-minute header in the box hit the crossbar.

In the 86th minute, Kristina Diana sent a shot to the right upper 90 to even the game at 1-1 and force overtime.

Gouner scored off of a beautiful pass from Anna McClung in the 69th minute to give the Vols a 1-0 lead. McClung took the ball up the left side and sent a pass through the box to find Gouner near the right post for a score at the center of the net. The goal was the first of Gouner’s collegiate career.

absorb as much info on Tennessee as possible, embracing articles that support their opinion that Tennessee is winning the SEC East, and coldly dismissing articles that suggest otherwise.

But that’s why game week might be the best week on campus—it’s rife with anticipation and optimism.

Tennessee is undefeated and every player has the chance to be really good. Without any statistical evidence, you can reasonably argue to your friends that Tennessee can beat every team on its schedule.

Oklahoma will be overwhelmed by Tennessee’s atmosphere. Florida can’t handle Tennessee’s defensive line. The Vols should have beaten Georgia the past two years, surely they will come through on the third attempt.

Even the vaunted Crimson Tide has an unproven quarterback and has to replace Amari Cooper’s production, why can’t Tennessee knock them off too?

Unrelenting optimism is not the only rea-

son why the first game week is so wonderful.

Now, you finally have a chance to create small talk with the person who sits next to you in your political science class. All you have to do is ask the person, “Are you ready for the game this Saturday?” (This question is still risky, however, because if the person’s reply is that he or she doesn’t follow football, you’re back to square one).

Even homework assignments are more bearable during the first game week. It’s easier to complete that lab assignment with the knowledge that the reward is a Saturday full of football.

And for the first time in 2015, Saturday will feature Tennessee football.

And that is why this week is so special.
