2015 Editorial Staff

If you were on campus last semester, you saw our first big change: switching to tabloid format, or “going square” as we lovingly referred to it in the office. This year, we’re taking even more steps to relate to campus and be your first choice for the news.

First, we launched a new website over the summer. Head to utdailybeacon.com to see the new and improved site. Our goal was to create a more visually appealing website that showcased our content creatively and in a more organized manner to help you find what you’re looking for faster.

With the rebuilding of our site came the addition of our multimedia team. They’ll work on presenting stories in different mediums, such as videos, graphics and other online exclusive content as well as updating you on what’s happening faster than waiting for the next day’s paper.

We are also focusing on online interactions with you all this year.

When we produce special issues, certain stories and graphics will be based off your responses to questions we ask through our social media accounts. Your answers are just as important as an expert’s, and we want to make sure you are heard. So, follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram to voice your opinion.

DISPATCHES Bernie Sanders meets with Jesse Jackson Democratic nominee hopeful Bernie Sanders met with civil rights leader Jesse Jackson Monday in a campaign effort to address growing racial issues in America. In an interview with CNN, Jackson laid out Sanders’ desire to address voting rights, urban reconstruction and other race themed issues that affect minority voters.

The meeting comes after a Sanders rally in Seattle was disrupted by #BlackLivesMatter protestors earlier this month. Jackson stopped short of endorsing Sanders for the Democratic nomination.

Female Viagra drug approved

by FDA Women with low sex drive can now purchase a “female viagra” pill to boost low sex drive. The Food and Drug Administration voted to approve the drug flibanserin this Tuesday, designed to treat low sexual desire in premenopausal women. Unlike Viagra, which addresses the physical problem of erectile dysfunction in men, the female version targets the central nervous system, classifying it as an antidepressant. In clinical trials, women who took the drug experienced a 37 percent increase in sexual desire, according to the pharmaceutical company that manufactures the drug. Last year, Viagra earned over 1.6 billion dollars in revenue for Pfizer. Despite this, manufacturing the female equivalent to the drug has proven difficult over the years due to the complex nature of female sexuality and arousal.

Torch Night blazes big orange Kevin Ridder

Copy Chief “You may have heard someone say ‘it’s great to be a Tennessee Vol.’ Now, you get to find out why.”

Vice Chancellor for Student Life Vincent Carilli used these words to kick off the 90th annual Torch Night Ceremony Sunday night in ThompsonBoling Arena. With approximately 5,000 members present from of the Class of 2019, the event served as a welcoming ceremony for freshmen beginning their collegiate career.

As the incoming class walked up the Hill, they stopped and called for the sophomores and juniors before finally meeting the seniors at the top and taking an oath of loyalty to the university.

Once Carilli was finished speaking at this year’s event, Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Life and Dean of Students Melissa Shivers had some words of encouragement to offer the new students.

“As I look across Thompson-Boling Arena into your eager, nervous and cautiously optimistic faces, I am reminded of the endless possibilities that will be unveiled to you in your next four years at the University of Tennessee,” Shivers said.

Shivers also assured the freshman that nerves were a normal part of beginning college, emphasizing the importance of drawing from the experiences of older students who understand the emotional transition into college life.

“You chose a campus community that is committed to your success, and I am convinced that all of you are going to be difference makers,” Shivers said.

Soon after, the audience was told to reach under their seats. Underneath each student’s chair was an envelope containing a glow stick and a graduation tassel with the year 2019 emblazoned on it.

As Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor Susan Martin spoke to the incoming freshmen class, the lights dimmed and thousands of orange glow sticks crackled to life across the arena.

“As you seek enlightenment, take up the responsibilities of being part of this community and embody the hope and aspirations of the future that awaits,”

Martin said. “This is the torch of preparation. Bear it with pride, and make us proud.”

While there weren’t any buglers present like the Torch Nights of old, the Pride of the Southland pep band accompanied by a cheerleading squad marched in soon after.

Afterwards, the Class of 2019 walked en masse to HSS for a complimentary cook out. Jamie Durbin, freshman in marketing, said she is looking forward to starting the semester.

“I applied to UT on a complete whim, I’m actually from Ohio,” Durbin said.

“But as soon as I visited the campus, I fell in love. The campus is beautiful, we’re right by the Smokies. It’s awesome.”

Welcome Leader Hayley Goldman, junior in nursing, said she enjoyed helping the new students.

“My experience over the past week has been very rewarding,” Goldman said. “I’ve loved working with each freshman in my group and helping them get acclimated to campus.”

Provost Martin closed the ceremony, addressing the Class of 2019 as part of “our big orange family.”

“I can’t wait to see the mark each of you will make on this campus, the permanent legacy you will leave,” Martin said. “Thank you for letting us be part of this incredible next step of your life’s journey. You couldn’t have chosen a better, brighter, oranger path to follow.

UT transit system expands services to Pellissippi, Oak Ridge Altaf Nanavati Copy Editor

The University of Tennessee has added a new link to the current transit system.

The UT transit system now features a new bus route to its T Link services that will accommodate a limited number of passengers from the University’s main campus, Pellissippi State Community College and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory as of Aug. 19.

The route, however, will not be available for regular commuters. Instead, it is meant to exclusively serve students and faculty participating in research projects at ORNL or UT. Since the students of the Volunteer Bridge Program, which assists students in the transition from their first year at Pellissippi State to their sophomore year at UT, make regular trips to Pellissippi’s campus, they will also be able to take advantage of the bus route.

Plans to open up a new bus route were in the works prior to its finalization in the summer of 2015. Mark Hairr, director of Parking & Transit Services at UT, pointed out that the project, in its entirety, was a collaborative effort among the office of research at UT and the administrators at ORNL and Pellissppi State.

main campus and the lab.”

Though the route will be open throughout the entire academic year from Aug. 2015 to May 2016, it is still classified as a pilot program.The administrators of the route will be closely monitoring ridership of the buses in these next few months.

If the ridership of the buses remains low during the route’s first year, the decision to continue the route for another year would require reevaluation and revision.

Teresa Nichols, an ORNL employee associated with the Sustainable Campus Initiative, feels very optimistic about the project and its future.

“We’re excited to be a partner with UT and Pellissippi State,” Nichols said. “I see that this is eventually going to get bigger and better.”

While the route will serve as a form of convenience for the students and faculty, Nichols pointed out another benefit that comes with the program.

“From the sustainable campus side, with this route we’re limiting greenhouse gas emissions,” Nichols said. “In that vein, we see this as such a great opportunity for us.”

Students and faculty who are eligible to ride the buses on this route are required to carry proper ID cards at all times. Those who are willing to enter ORNL will have their credentials checked before they enter the premises.

The route will operate through the rest of the fall semester until Dec. 10.

A Bid Day for the books

Sororities host inagural Bid Day in Sorority Village Heidi Hill

Assistant News Editor When potential recruits from UT’s 13 sorority chapters ripped open their bid cards with shaking hands, it didn’t just mark a day of personal history, it was a momentous occasion for every Greek chapter who called Knoxville home.

This year’s Bid Day, according to Assistant Director of Sorority & Fraternity Life Jennifer Pierce, marked the first time the newly completed Sorority Village hosted fall bid announcements.

“The energy today was just pretty infectious, especially when they open their bids and they run to their new houses,” Pierce said.

“It’s wonderful — it’s a great feeling.”

As leaping recruits raced to the Delta Zeta house, Pierce said she was reminded about the spirit apparent in every Bid Day despite the inevitability of crushed hopes and disappointment when recruits weren’t accepted in their first bids.

The long hours spent voting and decisionmaking, she said, can be disheartening at any Bid Day regardless of where the event is hosted or which sororities are involved.

“It’s a very fast paced, long week, so the low point is just when you get really tired at the end of the week,” Pierce said. “It’s hard to see girls get disappointed and you know they’re really awesome people.”

Though she hasn’t been an active member for 15 years, Pierce said working among various levels of Greek organizations has given her the ability to create perspective for the students who are upset by the results of Bid Day. Kathleen McPherson, junior in communications studies and Gamma Chi — an unaffiliated recruitment officer — concurred that counseling potential recruits shares its array of highs and lows.

“We get to talk to them about the chapters they feel comfortable in and the chapters they don’t feel so comfortable in,” McPherson said.

“But we also tell them that it can be difficult to know what chapter you’re meant to be in based on seven conversations that week.”

Conversely, McPherson emphasized that

between the free candy, pep rally-esque dances and flush of excitement, the ultimate reward lies in seeing the girls she rooted for make it into their sorority — even though she wasn’t attracted to Greek life when she first arrived at UT. “I get to see my girls go home to sororities that they’re really excited about, and I get to come home to mine,” McPherson said.

While some sororities like Delta Zeta opted to have their bid in Thompson-Boling Arena, new recruit Morgan Levenhagen, sophomore in microbiology, said the relief she felt in being selected was immense.

“It’s just good know that after a stressful week, you get to come home to your chapter,” Levenhagen said. “I was kind of disappointed to know that some of the chapters I liked didn’t pick me up, but once I was with D(elta) Z(eta), I knew that’s where I was supposed to be.”

For veteran Phi Mu Kelly Beisel, senior in child and family studies, her role as head Gamma Chi intersected with the historic day that did not go unnoticed.

starting crying watching it all happen, so that was probably the most exciting of the whole day,” Beisel said.

After months of planning her sorority’s summer retreat and on-campus events, Beisel, like Pierce, has witnessed not only an historic moment for UT Greek life, but a mark in her personal legacy as a sorority sister.

“I’ve kind of seen every angle of recruitment because I’ve been through it and I recruited on the chapter side,” Beisel said. “And now, this year, getting to work with all the chapters, I’ve gained a lot friends through that experience.”

Though Pierce said some lessons emerge after girls have left their houses, the opportunities available to those who decide to stay with Greek life post-college can continue adding pages into a Greek community’s history book.

“It’s hard to explain how impactful your membership can be post-college,” Pierce said.

“In my leadership role, I’ve been able to travel and take up different positions. They’re just so many things about being an alumni member that they don’t quite understand yet, and it changes your perspective.”

Sugar & Price: ‘Flex Plan’ revenues to fund future dining facilities Heidi Hill

Assistant News Editor That morning latte could be paying for PCB’s extreme makeover.

Starting this semester, UT Dining will implement its first mandatory meal plan requiring all undergraduates enrolled in at least 6 credit hours, who have not selected one of the university’s nine meal plan option, to purchase a $300 “Flex Plan.”

Distinct from Dining Dollars and VolCard accounts, the plan, as explained by Senior Associate Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration Jeff Maples, reads very simple on its surface: pay the $300 semester charge upfront and whatever is not used by the semester’s end is reimbursed in a matter of days — money returned as direct cash refunds, extra All-Star dollars, textbooks and tuition payments.

“You’re never going to lose it — you’re either going to eat, get a refund back or roll it onto your VolCard,” Maples said. “We think it’s a very fair and equitable process to help us building all these new facilities.”

Such facilities and in-progress buildings, Maples said, served as the impetus behind implementing the “Flex Plan,” providing the extra revenue stream needed to fund UT’s massive construction projects now underway.

Maples said he and his fellow administrators knew they could generate the revenue by increasing the price of existing meal plans or retail concepts, but decided against those options since it would place an “unfair burden” on residential students.

Their compromise emerged as the “flexible meal plan,” which guarantees a refund every semester to students who choose not to spend the allocated funds.

“This [option] gave us the revenue stream we needed to build new facilities without substantial increases to current meal plans, increases to retail prices, and it’s fair and equitable,” Maples said.

“No one can really do it better.”

However, when this plan was first suggested in fall 2013, a campus organization called Coalition Against Mandatory Meal Plans solidified in response under the mantra “Don’t Force Feed Us.” An online petition, headed by UT graduate Robert Naylor (http://petitions.moveon.org/ sign/stop-mandatory-meal-plans.fb48?source=s. icn.fb&r_by=10412053&fb_source=message), recieved about 1,800 signatures in opposition

to the proposed “Flex Plan” via social media, but was ultimately ignored by its two recipients --Maples and Executive Director of UT Housing Frank Cuevas.

Two years later, many still feel they are being “force fed” by UT administrators, debasing the “Flex Plan” as weakly justified and indifferent to student input.

Seth Zanoni, sophomore in supply chain management, said spending $600 per year on campus food is a tall order as a financially independent student.

“One of the reason I moved off campus was to save money, so it’s hard to see where this [plan] makes sense,” Zanoni said. “It’s really kind of like they’re lying. They’re saying $300, but they don’t say $300 per semester. That’s a lot of money for me.”

Because of the additional charge to his account, Zanoni said he came up short $250 on his textbooks, but said he is accustomed to adverse circumstances.

However, Maples said he recognizes the financial burden many students face and stated the decision wasn’t one made “overnight.” To him, the “Flex Plan” stands as an adequate stepping-stone for achieving a satisfactory dining service for future students.

“It finally comes to how we continue to make this campus move forward, and we’ve have a lot of comments [about that] over the years,” Maples said. “We’ve struggled not to be a hardship on folks, but I think we’ve settled on fairly middle ground.

“I recognize that it’s not going to be ideal for everybody.”

While the “Flex Plan’s” effectiveness hangs in the balance, Beverly Banks, junior in journalism, and her peers on SGA’s First Year Council may alleviate “Flex Plan” frustrations with student-driven decisions.

Last April, Banks visited the University of Alabama and the University of Georgia to gauge firsthand what kind of meal plan options the universities offered and how to mimic those services back in Knoxville.

For Banks, visiting the Tuscaloosa campus provided a glimpse into a future for UT dining since both universities contract through Aramark and are “very comparable” in their student population.

“They had a very open area, and -Seth Zanoni you can see them cooking your meal,” Banks said. “I want to say it’s the fresh, clean view of dining because you’re seeing what goes into your meal, which is different than what we’ve seen on campus.”

Like Zanoni, Banks said she understands from administrators about the details of the “Flex Plan” when it first emerged last fall. Flex Plan - All students who do not purchase UT’s meal plans will recieve a “Flex Plan” starting at a minimum 300 dollars. This is in a separate category from a student’s Dining Dollars and VolCard account, but any left over “Flex Plan” money can transfer into a VolCard account at the end of the semester.

Dining Dollars - The second category falls under nine meal plan options students can choose from, including varying amounts of Dining Dollars and number of meals per day. Those who do not have one are automatically given the Flex Plan at the beginning of the semester.

VolCard/All-Star - This third account acts like a UT debit or credit card where you can add cash throughout the year through at university portal. All Star funds are usable at POD markets, VolShop, BigOrangeTix and, most recently, in 24 restaurants on Cumberland Avenue and other nearby locations.

New semester brings new name and identity to Pride Center Tanner Hancock News Editor

In an effort to rebrand their public image, UT’s former OUTreach: LGBT & Ally Resource Center adopted its current name, the Pride Center, beginning this semester. The Pride Center began in 2010 as a way to offer a safe space for the university’s LGBTQ+ population, and will continue to offer their services in the coming year.

For Director of the Pride Center, Donna Braquet, the center’s new name serves to add more inclusivity to an organization that prides itself on welcoming everyone.

“One of our biggest values at the center is inclusion and making sure that everyone feels like they belong,” Braquet said, noting not all of the center’s members fall under the umbrella of LGBTQ+.

“We had a choice to make, we could continue to add letters to the name in an effort to be inclusive, or we could find a name that was more symbolic of our communities and identities, rather that purely descriptive.”

As the LGBTQ+ civil rights movement gains traction across the nation, other universities have begun to exhibit similar name changes to their respective LGBTQ+ student centers.

Since its founding in 2010, UT’s Pride Center has touched on several milestones, including its joining the Office for Diversity and Inclusion

in 2013. Since that time, the Pride Center has established a permanent administrative home, offered longer hours for students and even created an ambassador program.

Despite this progress, however, UT was just named the 5th least friendly LGBTQ+ school by Princeton Review for 2015.

VolOUT, a separate undergraduate LGBTQ+ social organization, began as the Lambda Student Union, yet similarly chose to undergo a name change in order to better meet the group’s mission of LGBTQ+ inclusivity Joel Kramer, the organization’s faculty staff advisor, attributes the recent wave of name changes to a “shift in understanding” of what it means to be a part of the LGBTQ+ community.

“As things have shifted and that population has become more visible on campus, they’ve moved to a point where they can do a name change,” Kramer said. “In general, it’s just a more visible community.”

While Braquet is optimistic about the future, she understands the challenges facing the university’s LGBTQ+ population, specifically the creation of gender inclusive housing as well as additional gender inclusive restrooms on campus.

“We want to make sure that prospective students who might have seen that and think that UT is not the place for them, that actually we do have a lot of good things to offer,” Braquet said.

The Pride Center will celebrate their name change with an ice cream social on Oct. 6 in the Melrose Hall courtyard.

Circle Park renovation partially complete, other projects in progress Staff Report Early Tuesday morning, construction workers finished laying tile for the extended terrace and steps surrounding the Torchbearer in the front of Circle Park. The Volunteer Boulevard closure near this area also opened for the start of fall classes.

Sidewalks cutting through Circle Park will be open the first day of classes, but the lawn area will remain closed until crews finish installing a new irrigation system and a more durable AstroTurf sod on Aug. 21.

To give the sod time to take root, the lawn will not be open to the public until Sept. 6.

Other ongoing projects include removing pieces left after the University Center’s demolition on July 21 and laying foundational work for Phase II which will extend to the west side of Volunteer Blvd.

The second phase is scheduled for completion by Spring 2018 and will house a variety of services including additional dining areas, meeting spaces, lounge areas, UT Federal Credit Union and the VolCard office.

A new residence hall and parking garage at the former site of Gibbs Hall are in progress, while the Apartment Residence Hall is scheduled to be completely demolished by the end of the semester.

There’s more than one way to bleed UT orange

Bleeding Orange, Being Different

If there’s anything that I love about UT, it is how diverse the student body is.

All you have to do to meet a Boston native or someone from the Bahamas is go to math class.

Unfortunately, we rarely see the great gift of this diversity put on the pedestal it deserves. For that main reason, and a few others, I have made this column specifically to shine some light on the good doings, issues and ideas surrounding diversity and our multicultural campus.

In actuality, the depths of these diverse people that we encounter everyday are just as regal and fantastically admirable as the next big win of any team in the Vol Nation. With us being an SEC school, it is somewhat natural to devote more time and attention to our newest running back than it is to give a simple hand clap for the exchange student from Pakistan doing cancer research or the issues of police brutality towards people of color and how it may affect our campus experience.

This is what this column is for — to share the spotlight and give opinions and perspectives on things that we usually don’t associate with bleeding orange.

With us being here and embracing the experience, we all have that orange blood vessel, some bigger than others, uniting us as a campus. But before we can fully appreciate each other as family, we have to pay attention to our differences in perspectives and beliefs. Only then may we progress, learn and appreciate the ways of growth and change through the art of understanding.

If you haven’t noticed by now, I most definitely

have the mindset of an activist, and I express it best through writing. I try to be an understanding person and really use my “third eye” to see all sides of a situation. I believe in positivity, growth and understanding.

That’s what I want to do with this column.

Although this is probably having you thinking “why so serious?” in your best impression of the Joker, I wholeheartedly promise you that I’m an awkward, corny person who binge watches Netflix just like you. I just really care about people and perspective and how to join the two in a creative way. I promise to lighten up from time to time and show you the other half of my face. (Get it? Like Two-Face from Batman?

Because I made the Joker reference and one side of dude’s face was … you know what, never mind.)

This time around my spotlight isn’t too far from Neyland Stadium or Thompson-Boling. In fact, it hits right on the sidelines. My first orange ray of light is in honor of Justin Crawford-Jimbo, a JapaneseAmerican and one of UT’s newest male cheerleaders.

If you have ever encountered him, Crawford-Jimbo comes off as the definition of a Volunteer, a genuinely nice and humble person who will even bend over backwards for strangers.

He said that his biggest adjustment when moving to Tennessee from Japan in 2011 was the specific aspect of American culture that the state is known for: southern hospitality.

“I went to a small-town high school, and it was very hard to get along and adapt to an environment that I wasn’t used to,” Crawford-Jimbo said. “So, I had to create a very unique person within myself just to be

Last semester, when our Editor-in-Chief, Jenna Butz, asked me if I’d be interested in writing a weekly column for the Beacon, I was—well, honestly I don’t remember that night at all.

It was near the end of the semester, everyone was going crazy and, I can only assume, indulging in some sort of rather uncouth debauchery.

But here we are.

Opinions, as it may be said, are like sphincters; everyone has one, and I don’t care to know about yours. From some people, you hear them all the time.

I don’t particularly care to listen to anyone else’s. But often I do. It annoys me, but I typically come out a more rounded and whole person for it.

I may have lost track of that simile somewhere.

Nevertheless, I have stumbled into the position of expressing mine once a week for general consumption. My opinion, that is.

I’d like to think, when I was asked if I wanted to write all those moons ago, I was excited. Excited at the prospect of getting a little readership that would eagerly await my weekly thoughts on whatever it is that columnists write about.

But like I said. I can’t remember. So I won’t lie to you.

Which brings me to the title. I went with “If I’m

Honest.”

I chose that title because I love that phrase. It’s an excellent lead-in to anything. It’s the greatest speech gap-filler ever uttered. And, if I’m honest, I say it all the time.

But why choose it as a title? Because it’s important.

In fact, the most important action a person can undertake when expressing an opinion is honesty.

Being right, as it turns out, is wholly optional.

I’m certain that I’m often terribly wrong about all sorts of stuff. You’d have a hard time convincing me of that, but that doesn’t mean it’s not true.

As a matter of illustration though, I’m certain that I hold a completely erroneous view on the use of turn signals. I think they’re pointless, feckless articles of redundant, headache-inducing, nighttime-blinding ornamentation. Yet hundreds of millions of people have looked at them and concluded, contrary to my opinion, they are necessary.

Like I said, I’m clearly wrong. I just don’t know how. And friends have tried to convince me of my wrongness for years. None of them have succeeded partially because I’m bull-headed, but mostly because, in the deepest part of my cerebrum, I think I may actually be right.

That’s because my opinion is always reached

ready for a big college like the University of Tennessee where there’s 40 to 50,000 kids here.”

Although now adjusted to the Southern way of life, Crawford-Jimbo did have to deal with personal cultural barriers. Yet, he now credits his more comfortable fit into the Volunteer mold to his campus involvement. He has been involved with the Student Government Association, The Volunteer Channel, the Black Student Union and the Center for Leadership and Service.

As his résumé continues to flourish, CrawfordJimbo made it clear his most prized role as a UT student is being a male cheerleader.

“It is a leadership position within itself because you kind of guide other males into thinking that it is a cool thing to do,” Crawford-Jimbo said.

Because no Vol is the same, Crawford-Jimbo embraces his differences while still bleeding orange as he sees fit.

“I think I bleed orange because the second I stepped foot on campus, I knew that I wanted to make a difference, and I feel like that is what this university withholds,” Crawford-Jimbo said. “It’s making a difference in Knoxville’s community, our campus community and just all of the above. So being a male cheerleader, cheering on the Vols, doing what everybody loves to do … just kind of ties it up for me.”

through an honest day of working through all of the perspectives and pitfalls of which I can think.

Granted, some of the time, I don’t think all that hard. But I digress.

My goal is simple. I must find the absurd, the inane and the downright stupid and present it to you, reader, with not only the intention of making you think, but making you laugh.

I don’t care what it is. You have to be able to laugh about it.

Notice I didn’t say laugh at it. I didn’t say laugh with it. I said laugh about it. Humor is everywhere, and it’s my favorite way to cope. And if you can’t laugh about something, then you just aren’t looking hard enough to find the humor.

Or you simply don’t want to laugh. But I hope that isn’t the case because I always want to laugh. Even if it’s just to keep from crying.

If that sounds interesting to you, then strap in. I’m charging head strong into the good fight for all that is forthright. Let reason be our guide, humor our partner and honesty our policy.

Worst of all, the Netflix binge addiction that plagues college students across the nation must be cured. Or does it? When you finally make the poor decision to skip class (we all will at least once in a semester), kick back and make the most of your day off with these flicks:

Eight years ago, BLANK Newspaper began with a goal of bringing only the good news in a community to its members.

Today Rusty Odom, BLANK Newspaper founder, continues his mission to bring out the best of the community through BLANKFest 2015, a music festival in Market Square including over 15 local bands.

Last year, Odom held the inaugural BLANKFest in late May. This year, he changed gears.

“The reason I wanted to do it in August this year is I wanted it to be a back-to-school bash,” Odom said. “I want kids who have never been here or who are just coming back from the summer to discover who they are going to see over the next few years in town.”

Despite initially hoping to start a sports-centered newspaper, Odom quickly took BLANK Newspaper in the direction of the music scene and has no intention of straying.

“In the past several years, that has served us really well,” Odom said. “We have a lot of good music in this town.

“Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” The Black Cadillacs will be headlining BLANKFest this year.

One core piece of Knoxville’s music scene is The Black Cadillacs.

Containing four UT graduates and a singer born and raised in Knoxville, the band maintains a strong local following.

“It’s always an enthusiastic crowd and it’s always a blast to get to play for our hometown crowd,” John Phillips, lead guitarist, said. “Playing on the road is great and playing for new people is awesome, but coming home is the best thing.”

The Black Cadillacs will be headlining BLANKFest this Saturday night, and Phillips expressed the band’s excitement for the performance.

“We’re just really excited to come home and be a part of something like this,” Phillips said. “It’s a great way to kick off the school year and celebrate Knoxville music.”

The scope of local Knoxville music is what drove Odom to start BLANKFest.

“Here we have a great music scene, but where do you start?” Odom asked.

“If I put everybody together on one day, that’s a great starting point for people to see what we’ve got.”

The range of artists Odom has lined up boasts a variety befitting a comprehensive, local showcase.

“We’ve got everything this year from brass and honky tonk to wizard rap,” Odom said. “We have a comedy improv and a burlesque stage as well. We are trying to incorporate the entire entertainment scene not just the music.”

All performances on the Market Square stage are free. A $10 wristband gives access to all of the other performances in participating venues: Preservation Pub, Scruffy City Hall and Cocoa Moon Fusion Grill. $40 VIP bracelets give access to an exclusive bar, viewing area and pre-party.

Cliché, I know, but it’s a classic for a reason.

Stevie Wonder brings his tour to Knoxville Mega Patterson

This November, one of Motown’s most well-known artists will perform in ThompsonBoling Arena.

On Monday, Stevie Wonder announced that Knoxville is one of 20 cities he will visit in his extended “Songs in the Key of Life” tour. The original tour occurred in Fall 2014, but due to popular demand, more performances were scheduled for this year.

After its original release in 1976, Stevie Wonder’s 18th album, “Songs in the Key of Life,” quickly became identified as the apex

of his career. The album ranks 56th on Rolling Stone’s list of 500 greatest albums of all time.

Many fellow musicians, including Elton John, Prince and Mariah Carey, claim that the album was one of their primary sources of inspiration. Countless covers and songs sampled from the album have been produced over the past few decades.

The career defining album includes some of Wonder’s most recognizable hits, including “Isn’t She Lovely” and “I Wish.” During the tour, Wonder will perform the entire album for each concert.

Pre-sale tickets were made available to Citi card members yesterday at 12 p.m. local time.

Tickets will be available to the general public on Friday, Aug. 21 at 10 a.m. local time.

Beatles’ first recording contract to be auctioned next month Associated Press NEW YORK — The Beatles’ first recording contract was signed in Hamburg, Germany, where the band honed its craft playing gigs in the city’s boisterous nightclub district.

The 1961 recording session produced the single “My Bonnie.” It was released on the Polydor label in Germany only and never hit the top charts. But the tune led directly to the Beatles’ discovery back home, a contract with EMI the following year and their first hit, “Love Me Do.” Heritage Auctions will auction the six-page contract in New York on Sept. 19 for an estimated $150,000. It’s the centerpiece of a Beatles collection spanning the band’s entire career. It’s being sold by the estate of Uwe Blaschke, a German graphic designer and noted Beatles historian who died in 2010.

“Not many people know that the Beatles started their careers in Germany,” said Beatles expert Ulf Kruger. “The Beatles had their longest stint in a club in Hamburg at the Top Ten Club. They played there three months in a row, every night. The style they invented in Liverpool, they cultivated in Hamburg.”

“Without this contract all of the pieces wouldn’t have fallen into place,” added Dean Harmeyer, Heritage’s consignment director for music memorabilia, who said the band was “a ramshackle, amateur band” when they first went to Germany. “They were probably a C class in the pantheon of Liverpool bands.”

But their stints in Hamburg between 1960 and 1962 changed that.

“It really is where they honed their musical skills to become the Beatles,” he said. “They set about learning new material, they worked on their instrumental abilities.”

But it was “crazy luck” that got them to Hamburg, he said.

Their booking agent fortuitously ran into a club owner looking for rock ‘n’ roll bands to perform in his Hamburg nightclub. The Beatles were not the agent’s first choice and wound up going only after other bands declined.

When the Beatles — John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and original drummer Pete Best — were later hired to be the backup band for British singer/guitarist Tony Sheridan at the Top Ten Club, German record producer Bert Kaempfert signed them and Sheridan to record a rock ‘n’ roll version of “My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean.”

“My Bonnie” netted the Beatles about $80.

It was credited to “Tony Sheridan and the Beat Boys” because Kaempfert felt the name “Beatles” would not cut it with Germans.

“The Beatles didn’t care what they were signing as long as it was for a recording contract,” said Kruger.

The only copies that made it out of Germany initially were the ones sent to the Beatles back home in Liverpool, England. After a local club disc jockey got his hands on one and started playing it, music fans began asking for it. That got the attention of Liverpool record shop owner Brian Epstein, who decided to hear them perform at the Cavern Club.

Electronic pop band combines new sound with techno-funk Megan Patterson

Normally I’m skeptical of synthesizers.

Raw, unfiltered sets heard straight from amp to ear have always held more weight for me than auto-tuned, smoke-and-mirror performances. However, last Saturday at The Pilot Light, Jamaican Queens made me reconsider.

The ragtag band of four set up on stage with an odd collection of equipment: a bass guitar beside some drum pads, an acoustic guitar propped by the mic, a keyboard, a drum set and synthesizer.

Choosing to forego an introduction or any fanfare to kick off the show, the singer turned to the other members of the band and started off the night with a strum of his guitar.

What followed was a high energy, polished performance that kept things low-key but emotionally involved.

The singer’s stage presence drew in the audience more than any personal monologues between songs ever could. Alternating between playing his guitar and dancing across the stage,

the singer controlled the crowd and amped up or keyed down their energy at will.

The singer accompanied himself with layered vocals and echoes throughout the show.

The other members showed an equal level of expertise by balancing their instruments’ natural sound with complimentary synthetic modification.

Despite my initial hesitance to enjoy a singer whose true voice was hard to pinpoint, I eventually gave in to the music and danced along with the crowd.

The well-balanced use of synthesizers and other equipment gave the band a professional quality separating them from the garage band image of their counterparts.

These musicians knew what they were doing. They didn’t need to hide behind filtered instruments — they used them as a stepping stool instead.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t have an entirely positive conclusion. After buying both albums at the show and going home to have sweet dreams and electronic beats dance through my head, I woke up the next morning to disappointment.

My car’s speakers failed to recreate the sound I heard the night before. Maybe it’s the speakers’ low quality and poor upkeep, or maybe the spontaneity and passion behind the band’s live performance simply couldn’t be communicated onto a disk.

MFA students present their art at UT Downtown Gallery Megan Patterson

This Friday, artists from all across the country will come together to display their art in the UT Downtown Gallery. They are the incoming graduate students in the UT School of Art. Mike Berry, gallery manager, has worked with UT Downtown Gallery for 11 years. Hired at the start of Knoxville’s downtown renaissance, Berry watched the local art scene grow.

For Berry, UT Downtown Gallery has been a cornerstone in this city-wide artistic revival.

“I think we are an important part of the community and an extension of the university,” Berry said. “It’s a good way for students to come down and see a professional show that is not their professor or a local artist. It’s educating them on something different.”

With a dual purpose of education and artistic promotion, UT Downtown Gallery is a fitting place for incoming MFA students to start their graduate career.

“The piece on display is their current work, what they’re bringing to the program,” Berry said. “Which is really interesting because if you follow a grad their work usually changes quite a bit.”

One incoming student, Tom Wixo, is entering the school for painting with a drawing concentration. His work deals with artistic and sociological aspects.

“I make mostly abstract paintings that work

with language and the failure of language,” Wixo said. “I’m really interested in language, sort of how it works and how it’s a code and how that code falls apart in certain situations.”

Wixo is part of a handful of drawing and painting students accompanied by students in transmedia, design, sculpture, ceramics and printmaking.

Despite being one of the nation’s most prestigious programs, UT’s printmaking program, which contains only three professors, has accepted only one new graduate student this year. Johanna Winters worked in a printmaking studio in Minneapolis for years before choosing to return to grad school.

“Beauvais (Lyons) has certainly built up a strong program,” Winters said. “The other faculty, I’m not sure how long all of them have been teaching, have a reputation of being a kind of powerhouse printmaking combo.”

For many of the upcoming students, this will be their first time seeing each other’s work. For the rest of the UT School of Art, the exhibition will be their introduction to the new graduates.

“Every student finds their own path and they come here to stretch themselves and to grow,” Berry said. “Usually the work that they exhibit is how they were accepted, on the strength of that work. It’s showing the school, these are our new grads and our new TAs and this is what they’re bringing to the program.”

The first-year graduate student exhibition will be on display from Aug. 21-29. A public opening reception will be held on Friday, Aug. 21.

2.Know where to get your cup of Joe Yes, the Starbucks in the Student Union is super nice, but there are still other (and probably less crowded) places to grab your morning coffee.There’s always the Starbucks in Hodges as well as the P.O.D. Markets all over campus with different coffee options.If you’re looking to grab breakfast too, head to either of the Einstein Bros Bagels and pair your shmeared bagel with their seasonal coffee brew or to

Dunkin’Donuts at Vol Hall (they have a sweet two donuts and coffee combo).Trying to not spend those 300 Dining Dollars? Golden Roast on Melrose (that’s the road that leads from the strip up to Hess) serves locally roasted coffee on your way to study.Remember that making coffee at home is free and always faster though.

3. Be prepared for class Don’t show up to class without the essentials — professors hate that.

While most of us carry our laptops from class to class, not all instructors will let you use them, so be sure to take a notebook and a couple of pens at the very least.Post-it notes and highlighters can help you mark important points in your textbooks and notes while helping jog

your memory when you’re studying later.If you have a packed schedule and need to keep your stomach from growling halfway through, pack some lecture friendly snacks like grapes, (chewy) granola bars or a Hershey’s special dark chocolate bar (per Bradi’s recommendation).

Don’t be that guy or gal crunching on an apple in the back.

4.Find the best spots in and around campus for a bite The new Student Union comes with new eateries on campus like Qdoba Mexican Grill and Salad Creations.If you’re trying to stay under meal equivalency, pack some snacks and then get a chicken sandwich at Chick-fil-A.Campus is also surrounded by quick, cheap and delicious restaurants that you can walk to.Cook Out is always a

go-to because a tray is easily the best deal in town, and Oscar’s Tacos is the best Mexican you can get under $10.If trying to be“healthy,” a Zaxby’s Zalad is a great way to trick yourself into being fit (another Bradi recommendation).

5.Make a good first impression A college classroom is no high school lunchroom, but walking into a packed lecture hall can still be pretty intimidating— especially on your first day.Rate my professor can only get you so far on judging how laid-back your professor is and no amount of“chill”really excuses showing up to your first class in flannel pajamas or, for Pete’s sake,

a bathrobe.Instead, opt for a decent pair of shorts and show up at least five minutes early to settle into a spot.To not piss off your peers, participate in discussion but don’t hog the spotlight.Put your phone on silent, learn your classmates’names and make sure your professor knows yours.

And don’t worry about what you look like. Everyone around here just wears running shorts and orange anyways.

Summer fishing trips provide relief for UT tight ends Jonathan Toye

Sports Editor Ethan Wolf and his fellow tight ends once had a simple idea: why not go fishing?

The idea proved successful. One fishing trip led to another, and the expeditions quickly became a favorite pastime among the position group.

Fishing is a simple activity, but Wolf said he believed the trips brought the tight ends closer together in the summer.

“I think that [fishing] built big chemistry between us because we still, to this day before practice are making jokes that pertain to us fishing and situations that happened,” Wolf said.

“So, we definitely bonded more out there.”

Redshirt senior Alex Ellis also enjoyed these trips. He flashed a smile when discussing his teammates visits to the lake and happily mused over who might be the best fisher — finally surmising that redshirt junior Joe Stocstill is probably the best.

“When we get some free time, it’s good to just do something relaxing,” Ellis said at UT’s annual football media day. “Everybody loves fishing no matter who you are. If you are 12 or 48, everybody loves fishing. It’s a good time.”

Ellis admitted the tight ends haven’t had much free time since the start of fall training camp, so they haven’t had the opportunity yet to take the newest tight end Jakob Johnson, who recently switched from middle linebacker, on a fishing excursion.

“It’s just been camp time for him,” Ellis said, laughing.

Truth be told, Johnson might have more pressing matters than scheduling his first fishing trip with members of his new position group.

Learning how to be a tight end isn’t easy, as mastery of the position requires a diverse set of skills. They must run block, pass block, run routes and have good hands.

But the Vols needed Johnson to switch positions after true freshman Kyle Oliver and redshirt sophomore A.J Branisel left the program.

The departures left Tennessee thin at tight end, prompting the coaching staff to move Johnson to the position.

The perceived lack of depth wasn’t the only problem the tight ends encountered in the fall.

Wolf, who starts in the positions, missed several practices with an unspecified injury.

“We have had some injuries, and I guess adversity overall,” Wolf said.

But the tight ends have deftly managed their adversity.

Wolf returned to Saturday’s open practice and didn’t seem to miss a beat. He snagged several tough receptions in 7-on-7 drills in front of an estimated 40,000 fans—delivering on the massive potential he displayed last season.

Tennessee Head Coach Butch Jones credited the tight ends for the improvement in the Vols’ passing game, praising Ellis’ and Johnson’s adaptation to the position.

Wolf said it was the tight ends’ bond that aided them in overcoming the problems in fall camp.

“We have just come together,” Wolf said. “We are very tight-knit in that room and we lean on each other when one person was having a bad day, the other was there to pick them up. We have had our ups and downs, but we are definitely on the up-rise of perfecting our technique.”

“We know when to push each other and how hard to push,” Ellis said. “We always hold each other accountable.”

And some simple summer fishing trips helped forge the bond that perhaps helped prepare the tight ends for the adversity of fall camp.

“We definitely bonded more out there — relaxing out of the football environment,” Wolf said. “That is the reason why I love the outdoors, just to be by yourself and to just relax.”

Go to a game. You’ll love it.

Sports Editor As the freshman class begins their first day as official Tennessee Vols, I can only offer one piece of advice: attend as many Tennessee sporting events as possible.

Skeptical of this suggestion? Here is an experiment you can conduct: ask any adult about his or her favorite college memory. More often than not, the memory in some way will be connected to sports.

Athletic events are special at Tennessee, especially football games. You can meet your quota for lasting memories in college by just attending

football games on Saturday.

Now, some of you might argue, “What if I don’t like sports?� It’s perfectly reasonable to not be a fan of sports. Some of my favorite people really have no interest in sports.

However, that’s not a valid reason to avoid attending games on campus.

There is always more going on at athletic events than just a game being played. Take football, for example. Just the atmosphere in Neyland is reason enough to attend a game — it’s the type of environment that even non-football fans can crave.

There are few experiences that can rival sitting with your friends among 100,000 other people in a setting where it’s socially acceptable to be as loud and as obnoxious as possible, happily singing a song to which everyone, even the non-sports fans, know the lyrics.

Still, you might counter with, “What if I don’t like big crowds and being around loud, drunk people?�

Claustrophobia is a valid reason to skip football games.

But there is more to game days than just the football games.

I doubt you can tell me with a straight face that tailgating with your friends before the game doesn’t sound fun, or that starting a “it’s great to be a Tennessee Vol� chant at the Cookout on The Strip seems dull or watching a movie with your closest friends after a game wouldn’t be a soothing way to end a Saturday night.

See? You can create a wealth of memories on game days without even attending the game. There is no reason you should stay in your dorm all day and study if you don’t like football.

But seriously, attend a football game even if football confuses you, or crowds intimidate you.

You will never have another opportunity to buy a football ticket for $10, and Neyland Stadium is one of the most storied venues in the country.

There is no excuse not to attend at least one— the experience, whether it be good or bad, will at least be memorable.

And you shouldn’t just attend football games.

Tennessee hosts Kentucky in basketball once a year and has the best women’s program in the nation (sorry Connecticut).

Even the less-prestigious sports are worth watching. The student soccer fan club, The Regal

Rowdies, have done a great job instilling excitement at women’s soccer games. Sitting with the Rowdies and participating in their creative chants are morethan-adequate excuses to spend Friday night at Regal Soccer Stadium.

And in the spring, there is something innately soothing about watching a baseball game with a couple of friends. The same applies to softball, too, but the experience will probably involve more home-runs and wins.

That’s not to say you should try to attend every athletic event. Studying is important too— just a lot less memorable.

Ultimately, college is all about balance. The people who have the best college experience discover the perfect equilibrium between school, friends and social activities.

And sports.

So Freshmen: when organizing your college schedule, make sure you plan on attending a game or two.

Titans finally intercept Mariota on his 231st pass of camp Associated Press NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Marcus Mariota’s streak of passes at Titans training camp without being intercepted finally is over.

Linebacker Zach Brown picked off the rookie quarterback, though he needed a little help to pull in the pick.

Linebacker Avery Williamson tipped Mariota’s pass in a 2-minute drill Tuesday, then safety Da’Norris Searcy tipped the ball before Brown pulled in the Heisman Trophy

winner’s 231st pass of training camp through seven-on-seven and team drills.

Coach Ken Whisenhunt joked that now the streak is over the Titans can see about finding another quarterback and possibly bench Mariota, the No. 2 pick overall out of Oregon.

“I’m glad it’s over, so you guys will quit talking about it,” Whisenhunt said. “It’s pretty incredible that it went this long, but he’s still continuing to progress and having a good camp. I’m excited about seeing him play this Sunday.”

Mariota was intercepted on his third pass of his preseason debut last week in Atlanta.

He credited this streak in camp to teammates being in the right spots.

“It was going to happen sooner or later,” Mariota said. “The defense made a good play.

A few of the guys were able to bat it up in the air. It was a good play. It just stings a little more because it’s a two-minute drill, and you want to be able to win the drill.”

The rookie quarterback had been hearing from his teammates how badly they wanted to intercept him and end the streak. Brown wound up fumbling after the interception, and safety Michael Griffin recovered the ball.

Griffin then tossed it to the equipment man-

ager for a keepsake.

Griffin said Mariota has been doing a great job learning so much of the offense every day.

That’s not stopping his teammates from making sure he remembers their first interception of him in training camp.

“We’re going to get the ball painted up,” Griffin said. “We’re going to hang it somewhere so he can see it and realize he’s not invincible.”

The four team captains took the field for the coin toss. However, the Chiefs had one player taking the field that instantly made the crowd stand on their feet and cheer — a former Vol. A man who beat Hodgkin’s lymphoma and defied the odds by taking the field that warm, summer night in Arizona.

Berry’s story is what many believe to be one of the “feel-good” stories of the year. And rightfully so. The Fairburn, Georgia native learned in July that he was cancer-free, but his brothers, Evan and Elliot Berry, have been supporting him since the day they learned the news.

“He’s been fighting through it, and taking it one day at a time. That’s what you have to do in situations like that, and he did it. I’m proud • Eric Berry of him,” Evan said. “[Eric’s] attitude didn’t change. He just had a problem he had to take care of.”

With Eric now hoping to play in the NFL regular season, Evan has set his sights for kickoff at Nissan Stadium on Sept. 5 against Bowling Green.

The 5-foot-11 sophomore is coming off a year where he ranked second in the SEC in kickoff return yards and earned Athlon Freshman All-American Third Team Kickoff Return honors last year.

Evan feels that his skills have grown since last season, as he settles into the main kick-returner role.

“The game was kinda fast when I got here, and everything was going on at once. It was like a fire-hose treatment.

It’s a lot of stuff to take in as a freshman,” Evan said. “Now, I’m just taking it as it is and helping the freshman coming in that are having the problem I had last year.”

When he’s not returning kicks, the Creekside High School graduate is providing depth at the defensive back posi-

tion. Evan will be playing safety this season and is constantly learning from veteran backs Brian Randolph and LaDarrell McNeil.

“Those guys are definitely experienced, and I hang out with them all the time and just talk about what to expect,” Evan said. “The coaches can draw up X’s and O’s, but at the end of the day, it’s how you prepare for it.”

Evan will continue to wear the number 29 jersey this year, just like his brother Eric in Kansas City.

Meanwhile, Elliot will be wearing 41, an inverse of the number Eric donned while he was a Volunteer.

Vols get serious about football season Staff Report Tennessee coach Butch Jones consistently stresses the small details, believing every waking moment is crucial in building a winning football team.

And in his presser on Friday, he revealed he believes non-waking moments are important too.

Jones wants his players to sleep about eight to nine hours every night. And he also established a system to ensure this goal comes to fruition.

“We have about 25 players right now that have a sleep coach, and they actually have a system set up underneath their mattress, and we can gauge how many hours of sleep they have,” Jones said.

“They have it on their cell phones and they actually have goals so they’re in competition.

They’re set up in groups and they compete. It’s changed our kids’ mindsets.”

Jones limited the number of sleep coaches to 25 to appraise the success of the system. He also has employed other methods to facilitate sleeping. He has the players wear glasses to block out blue light when they go to bed. And the players also wear sleep masks to block out the sunlight.

“We’re trying to really educate them and provide them the means to really be able to rest and recover,” Jones said.

“I think people look at the development of an athlete, they look at just the lifting and the running, but it’s the recovery as well,” Director of Strength and Conditioning Dave Lawson added. “Whether it be taking care of your body through stretching, cold tubs, and things like that, but it’s also sleep and recovering so you’re fresh and ready to go the next day. So sleep is really important.”

Injury report: Tennessee Offensive Guard Marcus Jackson is likely to miss his entire senior season, Head Coach Butch Jones confirmed after a practice on Aug. 11.

“There is no timetable set,” Jones said. “It could be the season. It could be eight months. It could be nine months. It is really based on how his surgery comes and how his body performs.”

Jones admitted there is a small chance that Jackson could play this season.

“If he has any opportunity of returning, it would probably be towards the tail end of the season to a bowl game.”

The third-year head coach revealed, on a Nashville radio show, that Jackson suffered a torn bicep in a non-contact drill.

Jackson started in 12 games last season at left

guard and has been in the Tennessee program for five years, redshirting in 2013. The redshirt in 2013 makes it unlikely the NCAA will grant him a medical redshirt for 2015.

Other players have battled injury in fall camp. Evan Berry has missed several practices but returned on Saturday, wearing a green no-contact jersey. Starting right guard Jashon Robertson has missed the last week of practice due to an ankle sprain, but should return in the next day or two.

Freshman guard Jack Jones was held out of Saturday’s open practice because he was “a little tired” according to Butch Jones. Jack Jones seemed to be favoring his ankle throughout the practice.

“The way I look at it is: it’s a tremendous opportunity for the next person in,” Jones said.

“Now their repetitions increase and now you have more of an opportunity to put your football identity on video, on film, and be able to take advantage of it. And when one man is down, it’s another man’s opportunity, and that is how you build depth.

“But we do need to get those individuals back.

And they have done a very good job in the training room so far.”

Golden Gaulden: John Jancek had plenty of kind words for sophomore defensive back Rashaan Gaulden after Monday’s practice.

It wasn’t the first time a member of Tennessee’s coaching staff praised Gaulden. Jones lauded Gaulden’s intelligence and maturity in the spring.

Jancek complimented different attributes on Saturday, commending his physicality, play-making ability, and his work ethic.

“He doesn’t say a whole lot, he just goes out and puts his body of work on film,” Jancek said.

“That’s what I love about him.

“I trust Rashaan because of what he stands for as a young man and the things that he has been able to do in a short amount of time.”

Jancek has Gaulden playing the nickel back — the defensive back who covers the slot receiver — and confirmed on Monday he doesn’t plan on moving Gaulden from the position anytime soon.

“You don’t want to mess with a guy like that,” Jancek said. “He is trying to learn the nickel spot, it’s a very complicated position. There are a lot of calls he has to make. There is a lot of things he has to know — receiver splits. He is involved heavily in the run game as well.

“He has the physical ability to play a lot (in the secondary), let’s just leave him alone and let him learn nickel.”
