Carson Hollingsworth and McKinsey Patterson will stay a duo for another year.

Hollingsworth, a junior in public administration, won the presidential bid with 2,814 votes, and Patterson, a junior in nursing, won vice president with 2,832.

“We did it the right way,” said Hollingsworth of his campaign’s approach. “We made sure we were completely authentic. We made sure we were doing this in the most clean and most appropriate way possible.”

Between hugs and congratulations from her fellow supporters, Patterson said the final results were something she really couldn’t believe.

“Nobody in a million years thought McKinsey Patterson would run for student government,” she said. “I don’t have the track record. I’m not an SGA-er, that’s not who I’ve ever been, and I don’t think anyone ever

expected me to run — much less win.”

With an entire year of legislation to look forward to, the two couldn’t help but look at the past efforts that led them to victory.

“When we were sitting up there (waiting for the results), we were reflecting on the past few months, past few weeks, and we were just thinking that we wouldn’t do anything differently,” Hollingsworth said. “We knew that we did it the right way. We knew that if we lost, we knew we’d be happy with losing because we did it the way we wanted to do it.”

For the Hardee Morris McCandless campaign, Jennings Hardee came in second for president with 2,639 votes, just 175 votes behind Hollingsworth, while Matthew Morris also came in second for VP with 2,673 votes, just 159 votes short.

The Hardee Morris McCandless campaign said they were concerned the voting site crash may have affected results.

Legislative committee passes new diversity amendment Tanner Hancock News Editor

Tennessee legislators approved a bill in a House subcommittee Wednesday that would prohibit state funds from being used to promote the use of gender neutral pronouns, to promote or inhibit the celebration of religious holidays or to fund or support Sex Week.

The bill now goes to the House Finance, Ways and Means Committee for further action.

An amendment to the bill, proposed by Rep. Micah Van Huss, includes a clause that diverts the diversity office’s state funds to be reallocated for the fiscal year 2016-2017 to fund a national motto decal program to distribute decals for any state law enforcement agencies.

Van Huss explained during the hearing that the “In God We Trust” decals would be produced by UT’s Graphic Design Department for any police agency that may request them.

The remaining funds would go towards existing “student recruitment” across the state, Van Huss explained.

On March 23, the Senate version of the bill was effectively killed for the year l subcommittee. Both the State bill and its sister House bill would need to pass in order for the measure to become law.

Colleen Ryan, junior co-chair for Sexual Empowerment and Awareness at UT (SEAT), said that her initial reaction to the amendment from Rep. Van Huss was laughter, given that Sex Week does not and has not received any funding from the state or tuition.

“It seems like a bill that is being used as a tool to rile up a political base at the expense of students,” Ryan said. “We’re

disheartened by it but not terribly surprised at this point.”

Fellow SEAT co-chair and senior Elizabeth Stanfield shared Ryan’s outlook, accusing state legislators of riling up anger in their voter base without a full understanding of what Sex Week is.

She views this latest controversy as a direct attack on students’ right to free speech, as she believes the legislators are attempting to push the university to discourage speech legislators do not agree with.

“Regardless of whether legislators like the content of our talks, they have no right to censor us. They cannot deny us our right to free speech,” Stanfield said.

Joseph Cohn from the Foundation for Individual Rights on Education (FIRE) said any attempts to stifle student programming that is funded by students, as Sex Week is, would likely prove unsuccessful.

“The Supreme Court is clear that students own their own student activities fees, and Sex Week has been funded by Student Activities Fees,” Cohn said.

“At this stage, students should do what they want to, and they should exercise their first amendment rights how they want to exercise their first amendment rights.”

Cohn said where first amendment rights concerns come into play with this bill is in how the university chooses to respond if it should become a law.

“The bill is going to take money out of the university’s budget,” Cohn explained.

“If the university, because of losing that money, decides to try to prevent students from having their Sex Week and doing it how they want to do it, then students should contact FIRE, because the university has an obligation under the first amend-

ment not to cave to pressure whether its from legislators or any other source when it comes to censorship.”

Matthew Scoggins, the Deputy General Counsel at UT, said the way he interprets the bill, it would only ensure that the university continues to not fund Sex Week with tuition or tax dollars, as it has done since the beginning.

“I think what the bill is is saying is just putting into law what the university has been doing since the first year, that no state funds have been allocated to the Sex Week program,” Scoggins said.

Until it is clear exactly what funds Tennessee legislators are trying to prohibit, Scoggins said the bill is largely just a preventative measure.

“If state funds means state appropriated dollars, then the student activities fee, I don’t think, is state appropriated dollars,” Scoggins said. “So, if that is the case, then this deal would not prohibit the student programming allocation committee from allocating money to Sex Week or anything else that would fall under the legislation.”

Sex Week is currently being held on campus for the week of April 4-8, and has received no university money, tax money or tuition dollars. Instead, it has been entirely funded through the student programming fees charged every semester.

After Sex Week’s first year at UT, former Knoxville state senator Stacey Campfield led legislative efforts aimed at punishing the university for allowing the event to go on undeterred.

The university and state lawmakers later reached an agreement, allowing students to opt-in or opt-out of paying the student programming fees that fund Sex Week.

Rep. Van Huss was not immediately available for comment.

Remembering the 1969 SGA president Tucker Shull Contributor In 1969, Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, The Beatles released Abbey Road and UT elected its first African-American SGA president, Jimmie Baxter.

This past year has been a difficult one for the university, with controversies surrounding the Office for Diversity and Inclusion making headlines across the country.

Despite its current troubles, the problems UT faces today are far from new.

In 1969, Baxter made his mark on Rocky Top’s history by winning the election to become SGA President, the first African-American to occupy that position.

Over the course of his life, Baxter has accomplished many things, from serving in the Air Force during the 1960s to a career in law that saw him rise to the position of Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Tennessee in 1978.

Baxter ran under the Student Coalition Party with a platform to make drastic changes in the student judicial system.

“At the time I started, basically, students had

no say or participation in the judicial system,” Baxter said. “We were able to change that so that we actually had a judicial student court that handled most charges of student misconduct.”

In 1969, Baxter said to an audience of over 250 students that he wanted SGA to become “a government of function rather than just by name.”

“We do not have an SGA that is working as a government and I think it’s time we had one,” Baxter said to the audience.

Baxter contended that his candidacy and presidency laid the roots for social change. In addition to being an African-American at a time when black students accounted for under one percent of the university’s student body, Baxter was strongly associated with the broader student protest movements sweeping the nation at the time.

“I mean, at the time I was considered a leftwing radical,” Baxter said, noting that there were several other hurdles to his candidacy.

Greek life had a massive amount of influence in SGA in the 1960s, and fraternities at this time effectively excluded black students from membership.

At one point, Baxter was asked to leave the presidential race completely. Backers of a rival

candidate, John R. Long, who was also vying for support from progressive students, showed up at Baxter’s residence one evening.

“And they said ‘look, you’re just going to draw votes away from John R. Long, and you’re going to end up electing this conservative guy (Jim Hager) and you don’t want to do that.’ And, you know, I said ‘thanks but no thanks, I’ll stay in.’”

Baxter said it was a heated campaign, and that race was certainly a factor.

“In fact, during my campaign there were people going around showing my picture to local businesses trying to raise money for the campaign, saying ‘this guy is running, and we need to beat him,’” Baxter said.

Baxter also recalled attending an event at Morrill Hall, one that he said had been orchestrated by those who sought to bait him into saying something that would sabotage his candidacy.

“And at some point, I said… ‘Well, I think that if I’m elected, the first thing I’m going to do is burn down this dormitory,’ Of course, that night flyers went out — ‘BAXTER THREATENS TO BURN DOWN MORRILL HALL IF ELECTED’ — they were being passed out all over campus.

“It was serious for a lot of students at that

time,” Baxter noted.

When all was said and done, more than 7,000 students voted from the student body of 12,000.

In the 2015 SGA elections only 3,735 students of 21,451 undergraduates cast their ballots.

In fact, Baxter lost the initial election in 1969, but after student protests, the first election was thrown out for election violations, and a new one was ordered.

But the first round proved important, because while Baxter had come in third, the spread between him, first-place finisher Long, and second-place finisher Hager was not very large.

Baxter said it was this realization among students that Baxter was a viable candidate that allowed him to win in the new election.

While the election of an African-American SGA president was a feat unparalleled at the time on campus, Baxter said it was in line with the overall rapid societal transformation of the 1960s.

From a student strike in the aftermath of the Kent State shooting to the reaction to President Nixon and Billy Graham’s joint appearance in Knoxville, much has been written about events that happened during Jimmie Baxter’s tenure as SGA President.

Baxter said that with social progression came those who had more extreme measures of getting their points across. He said he was reluctant to see his supporters engage with police in episodes that could have led to violence, a matter that eventually became a part of his platform.

“Because I resisted some of the calls from people who had been my supporters, they basically just saw me as selling out the revolution,” Baxter said.

“It makes to no difference what you believe — whether you are a revolutionist or a racist,” Baxter said to a crowd in 1969. “We (students) are out there in the cold.”

Baxter also did not fall short of calling out what he sees as problematic elements of today’s social justice activism.

He held that equality was the main goal of student protests during his time at UT, but he said he finds today’s activism as a stark contrast to his experiences with diversity.

“If the university had said, ‘Well, we’ll give you a black student center,’ we would’ve been outraged at the very notion of that,” Baxter said.

“That the university’s going to create a black student center for black students when we’ve got a student center for everybody.”

“Of course, over time, it became the politically correct thing to do and in fact … Black students started demanding a separate student center,” Baxter continued.

The Black Student Union was not available for comment.

Baxter said he thinks the university would be better off without the Office for Diversity and

“If I had the power, I would probably ban the use of the word diversity unless they were talking about diversity of thought,” Baxter said. “It’s the whole mentality that guides the notion that there is a need for an Office of Diversity, that’s what concerns me.”

When contacted, the Office for Diversity and Inclusion did not wish to provide comments on this article.

Baxter said he believes all students should receive treatment from the administration based on their individual merits, rather than as members of any group, be it racial background, sexual orientation, or anything else.

Baxter said people should be more aware of the progress he experienced on campus in 1969.

“Students today don’t have the perspective

of what a really racist university looks like,” Baxter said.

When Baxter first entered college in the early 1960s, a student of color would experience intense social isolation on campus, and blatant outbursts of racism and sexism were frequent.

Baxter argued that this lack of perspective extended to the modern Black Lives Matter movement.

“Their view of society is very limited, and I think they have difficulty putting into context the journey of racism and blacks in this country,” Baxter said. “I mean, they almost have to go out and look for racism.”

Baxter said modern day activism is what he sees as young black people not fully appreciating the progress America had made with regards to race.

“It is wrong to characterize the United States today as a ‘racist’ society,” Baxter said.

Baxter cited the election of Barack Obama, and the two African-American Attorneys Generals as examples.

“When I worked for the Department of Justice, the idea that there would be a black Attorney General was very, very unlikely,” Baxter said.

While Baxter conceded that racism still exists in this country — for instance, police brutality as a result of racial bias — he said he thinks most complaints about the issue are overblown compared to everyday life during the Civil Rights Era. “I mean, you didn’t have to wonder if a white cop was racist,” Baxter said. “Hell, you knew the white cop was racist. Hell, the white cop knew

he was racist.”

Baxter said the vast majority of police officers today do not display any overt racism, and that those who do display such tendencies would be quickly dealt with.

Baxter deemed today’s activist behavior as what he sees as “oversensitivity” among the student population today.

“It’s sad to see that university students come to the point where the one diversity that is not acceptable is diversity of thought,” Baxter said.

“That there is a point of view that is an acceptable point of view and you must have that point of view.”

Baxter noted that when he was a student, he looked forward to debating those with differing viewpoints, and said he is sad to see students today actively rejecting even to interact with those with opposing views.

“This thing about trigger words and safe spaces … You know, when I start first reading about this, I thought this was a joke,” Baxter said. “I just wonder what kind of students we are turning out if it. If they were that fragile that they can’t stand to hear an opposing point of view … That does not make me optimistic about the future of this country.”

Baxter said didn’t have any advice for the newly appointed president of SGA, and said he wasn’t sure if anything he did say would be relevant.

“Well, campus has probably changed so much since I was there that I don’t know if anything I would say would be relevant today,” Baxter said.

“I’m not sure what the role of student government on campus is today.

SGA continued from Page 1 “We’re going to look and see what the possibility is of contesting,” Hardee said during her speech to their campaign supporters. “The voting site was down for six hours. That’s when we used most of our resources, so we’ll see what happens.”

Morris and Hardee both remarked on the integrity of their campaign to their supporters gathered at Sunspot after the results were shared.

“We did it the right way. We didn’t bully people. We just wanted to treat people like they deserve to be treated,” Morris said. “I hope the people in student government can carry on that message. That’s what it’s all about.”

Caitlyn McCandless, who ran unopposed for Student Services Director under the Hardee Morris McCandless campaign, won with 6,726 votes.

Though McCandless won, she still expressed surprise and disappointment about her campaign’s loss.

“I truly believe that the reason that we lost is because we ran a clean campaign,” McCandless said. “We ran on feasible policy that’s actually going to happen next year. We didn’t lie and cheat our way to the top.”

make sure that students were represented, and sadly it didn’t go through.

“But also, we were the only campaign that didn’t have any real violations. We followed the rules the whole time. We didn’t do anything (wrong) and that’s something to be proud of.”

Pennycuff declined to comment on the election results.

The voter turnout more than doubled this year, with an increase of 3,822 votes.

The number of voters in 2015, with 21,451

undergraduate students enrolled at the time, totaled 3,735 vote, while this year, with 21,863 undergraduates enrolled, 7,557 students came out to vote.

Current Student Services Director Mariah Beane, senior in business analytics, called this year’s voter turnout “historic” for UT’s SGA elections.

“Win or lose, voter turnout was as high as it’s been in several years,” Edwards said, “and that’s something to be proud about.”

Art Market celebrates 34th year Jarrod Hall

The oldest art gallery in Knoxville, the Art Market Gallery, is entering its 34th year of business and celebrating its 10th year in the current downtown location.

Art Market Gallery is a regional artists’ cooperative featuring only one of a kind art and fine crafts. The gallery features art in all media, from paintings to photography and pottery to jewelry.

Brenda Mills, who owns and renovated the gallery’s current space, shared some details about the Art Market Gallery’s history.

“We were being booted out of our old space in World’s Fair Park in the Candy Factory, and my husband and I already wanted to get into the renovation business,” Mills said. “So we bought out the downtown space, and we’ve been there for 10 years now.”

Artists who are members of the gallery are broken down into two categories: 3D artists, whose work consists of handmade jewelry, pottery and sculptures, as well as 2D artists, whose work consists of paintings and photography.

Art Market Gallery’s main attraction is its monthly First Friday event, where the gallery is completely rearranged, rehung and filled with new pieces. First Friday always features

two new artists, one 3D artist and one 2D artist.

The Gallery has a storage room filled with all kinds of original art works, and the walls of the gallery themselves can be moved to accommodate as much art as will possibly fit on display. First Friday features a reception at the beginning of the evening, with refreshments and music in the foyer.

Some artists change out their entire display on a monthly basis, which they are encouraged to do, while other artists will leave the same display up for months at a time, so visitors can always expect a little bit of something different as well as something familiar on every visit.

One interesting aspect of the gallery is that they only take 30 percent of art sales to fund the gallery and keep it in operation. Most galleries take up to 50 percent of the sale price of the artwork.

The Art Market Gallery is an artist cooperative, every member of the gallery must work there in order to keep the shop up and running. This means that everyone you see behind the desk when you are inside enjoying the art is an artist and member of the gallery cooperative.

One such member, Chris Hardy, is an impressionist painter who has been a part of the gallery for two years. While painting is obviously a form of self expression, the artists of the gallery also depend on it as a source of

income.

“It’s a difficult balance to keep. It really is,” Hardy said. “I paint a lot on commission, so 50 percent of my work is for an audience, but the pieces I paint for myself are the ones that usually get put in the galleries.”

Since the gallery only takes the bare minimum of the sale price of the art, they host a yearly silent auction, which is a large part of what goes to keep the gallery open.

Artists who wish to have their work displayed in the gallery submit their art to the Display Committee, which is made up of all member artists. The committee chooses the best art from all categories and hangs the art around the gallery on First Friday.

At the end of the day, the goal of the gallery is to sell as much art as possible. Mills said that the biggest movers are paintings and photography, but that there is a real mix of all art media on display.

The Art Market Gallery holds two juryings a year, which they publicize in all the local newspapers. The jury is composed of two 3D artists and two 2D artists. Prospective new members are told to choose four pieces from their collection that represents the rest of their artwork. The jury then decides whether or not to display that artist.

Mills said that her tip to all new artists is to master your medium and to not be afraid to put yourself out there.

If you think jokes about repressed homosexual tendencies, the AIDS epidemic in Africa and the ruinous state of warring Ugandan towns are hilarious, then “The Book of Mormon” is the musical for you.

The Broadway musical “The Book of Mormon” took over the Tennessee Theater Wednesday night.

From Matt Stone and Trey Parker, creators of the animated series South Park, and Robert Lopez, composer of Broadway musical “Avenue Q,” “The Book of Mormon” offers a comedic tale of dealing with life’s absurdities beneath the front of optimistic Mormon missionaries.

The musical follows the missionary pair of Elder Price (Ryan Bondy) and Elder Cunningham (Cody Jamison Strand) as the two are eagerly sent to spread the word of the Church of Latter Day Saints in Uganda.

However, soon after their arrival, the duo realizes Africa is nothing like “The Lion King.”

The Africans are starving and oppressed by the warlord General Butt-(expletive)Naked (Jevares Myrick). They have no water, and they have no cure for AIDS. Unlike the plucky duo, the Africans offer blasphemous condolences to the Heavenly Father. They have no use for the ever hopeful Mormon missionaries. That is, until the African girl Nabulungi (Candace Quarrels) gives the white boys a chance.

Of course, things do not go completely as planned, and Elder Price decides to run away, hoping to get transferred to Orlando, Florida. Meanwhile, the bumbling sidekick Elder Cunningham steps up to the plate to teach the willing Africans about Mormonism, taking a lot of “artistic license” in doing so.

“The Book of Mormon” has pulled out all the comedic stops: four-letter curses towards the Heavenly Father, raping babies, cameos from Star Wars characters, the ridiculous

tale of the origin of the Upstate New York religion and a musical number in Hell featuring none other than Hitler and Jeffrey Dahmer. They even managed to make Baptism a sexual act.

That being said, “The Book of Mormon” is beautifully crude.

Do not get me wrong, there are countless offensive jokes on the behalf of Mormonism and Africans, but it is all done in such a tasteful, colorful way. It would be an accomplishment to be genuinely offended by this musical.

UT hosts conference for Native Americans Joanna Brooker Contributor

This coming weekend, UT will be host to persons of STEM and tribal affiliation alike.

For the first time, UT has been chosen as the host for a American Indian Science and Engineering Society Regional Conference. AISES is a regional conference that focuses on educational, workforce and professional development through a native cultural lens.

This conference is put on by the student organization Native American Student Association which has been present on UT’s campus for 10 years.

“A conference like this one would bring awareness that Native American Student Association is even a group on campus,” Kyle Chapa, freshman in environmental science and Native American Student Association chairperson, said. “Because a lot of people don’t even know that we exist.”

Although this student organization may be under the radar, it is not invisible.

Native culture is present throughout our campus, from the Cherokee burial mound on the agriculture campus to the McClung exhibit on native people.

“You can’t avoid native culture here,” Kimberly Smith, graduate student in business with a concentration in marketing and NASA council leader, said. “You step outside of any building on campus, and you’re surrounded by native culture by just knowing that thousands of years ago this place was native community, not a university.”

Following the conference, Chapa and Smith have high hopes for Native American Student Association’s future.

“Having a conference here puts UT on the map for native students,” Smith said.

“And that’s one of the goals of Native American Student Association to make UT a hub for native students.”

The conference is open to all students at $10 for three meals and two days of activities.

The opening ceremony will start this afternoon (Friday) at 4:30 p.m. in the Humanities Amphitheater with a game of stickball.

Protesting, yelling, raising signs and slogans and declaring your ideas is all fine. It is a free country, and it is part of your rights to do so.

It may be a part of your religion to refuse “wrong” things in your perspective and try to call people to see life the way you see it. It is also okay to practice your beliefs publicly and show your support for a case or an idea in public places where you want to draw attention and deliver a message.

But what is not okay is to do all of that with nonsense and without using a logical, convincing way to deliver your message in a good way, especially among well-educated people in a place like a university campus.

In the Holy Quran, there is a phrase in the sixth Surah that says, “Revile not ye those whom they call upon besides Allah, lest they out of spite revile Allah in their ignorance.”

The point is that you should not curse the people who are different from you because they will curse you in return, and this is definitely not a good way to call people to follow you or believe in whatever you believe in.

Take this into consideration and the other famous phrase from the Holy Bible in Matthew 7:5 that says, “You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your

brother’s eye,” which clearly urges every one of us to consider their flaws and faults before looking for the “mistakes” of others. We can conclude that there are better ways of expressing our ideas other than accusing everyone else of being a “lie” or “wrong” or simply “sinful” and “full of maliciousness,” because this will just cause people to stop listening to what you say.

As a Muslim from the Middle East, from Iraq specifically, I lived among a majority of Muslims, and I wrote a lot about respecting other religions and beliefs as a way to gain the same respect in return. There are extremists everywhere in every religion, and I am sure that there are too many people like me in all the other religions who have been calling their people to be wiser and more reasonable when expressing their ideas and dealing with others. But unfortunately, seeing that some people came out of nowhere to protest in the middle of the campus and step on the symbols of others who are different from them just makes me feel sad to know that in the 21st century there are still people that believe they can insult everyone else and expect someone to follow them.

The world is not working like this. It is simply more logical than that. And if these people (that I am sure do not represent anyone

except themselves) still believe they are doing good, then I just feel sorry for them and for their way of thinking, and I hope they can see the world and the surrounding life with more open minds, out of the box they have kept themselves in their entire lives.

It takes more than insulting and undermining people to convince them to believe in something. You can convince people to follow you by showing them how your actions are better than others. You can make them consider your call by showing them how much you care about them and wish them all the good.

You can support your cause by expressing your respect and love for everyone equally to prove that you have something worthy to be considered. Otherwise, you will just increase the number of people who stay away from you and ignore your existence — of course with the possibility of motivating extremists from other religions and belief systems to fight back, and then no one will be a winner.

Culture night entertains with Japanese customs Eric Bailes

Contributor How many people know that the martial art form known as kendo inspired the lightsaber battles in Star Wars? Did you know edamame goes well with beer?

These were some of the many things that people learned at the Japanese Culture Night at the International House Wednesday night.

The event was a showcase of various aspects of Japanese culture, ranging from food to dance.

The night kicked off with some Japanese food, which consisted of curry rice, karaage chicken, edamame and daigaku imo. The latter are candied sweet potatoes, which are generally eaten as desserts.

After everyone was well fed, various students began to talk about the forms of pop culture in Japan.

They started with anime and manga, which included shows popular here in America, like “One Piece,â€? “PokĂŠmonâ€? and “Dragon Ball Z.â€? They also discussed anime that is popular in Japan but has yet to come over to the States.

Following the topic of anime, a group of girls came up and talked about pop idol groups and dance. One of the groups they discussed, E-girls, is a twenty-member girl group who not only sing but dance with bubbly energy.

To familiarize the audience with Japanese pop dances, the girls did a routine to some of E-girls’ music, like the song “Follow Me.� Much like the E-girls’ themselves, the girls at the showcase danced with a lot of energy.

The next part of the event dealt with the art of kendo and was led by Takuya Hayakawa, a second-year graduate student in kinesiology. Hayakawa and an assistant showed off the various kinds of kendo, using a bokken and a shinai.

A bokken looks just like a katana, or samurai sword, except it is wooden. When used in practice, fighters do not use it to hit each other; instead, it is stopped right before contact. The other weapon, a shinai, is what people think of when sparring comes to mind. “Sharing the culture is knowing myself at the same time and seeing how much my culture affects foreign people,� Hayakawa said on the importance of sharing his cultural background with students at UT. The last event of the showcase asked that the audience get up and dance to a couple of Japanese songs. Dancing around in a circle with both men and women wearing yukatas, the atmosphere was full of both fun and confusion since everyone who did not already know the dance struggled to keep up.

Reimi Sato, junior in industrial engineering, took part in many of the various aspects of the night. Like Hayakawa, Sato said she believes that the event served an important purpose at UT. “It’s a simple way to teach my culture, my own heritage to other people,� she said.

The International House does a Culture Night three times a semester, with different countries each night.

Japan was the last Culture Night of the semester, so check back next semester for what countries they will do next.

Volunteers continue finding offensive firepower Trenton Duffer Copy Editor Wide receiver Josh Smith and small forward Dominique Wilkins are two athletes from different eras but both share one quality.

Smith and Wilkins are human highlight reels.

While Wilkins wowed crowds in the 80s and 90s with his amazing dunks, Smith is showing his ability to make unreal plays on the football field. In a 2014 game against Arkansas State, Smith was given a reverse handoff and preceded to run five yards up-field before completely hurdling 5-foot-11 defensive back Rocky Hayes.

After this week’s practice, Smith looks primed to make more eye-opening plays this season.

A few minutes into Tuesday’s practice, Smith jumped up and made a one-handed catch that caught the attention of bystanders, earning a few hoots and hollers from his teammates.

Wide receiver coach Zach Azzanni told the media on Thursday that Smith’s size gives him an advantage on the field.

“He’s got a great skill set,” Azzanni said. “He’s 210 pounds, and he’s really tough.

“We all know that. He makes the hard catch-

es. He’s real quick, a lot quicker than people give him credit for. He can get in and out of his breaks and kind of manage those voided areas in zone coverage, and he can also beat man coverage.”

Azzanni admitted that the Vols will be using Smith a lot in the slot receiver position this season. The four-year coach said that Smith’s intelligence and playmaking ability will profit the team throughout the season.

“Hats off to him,” Azzanni said. “My man made some big catches on the outside. (He was) probably playing a little bit out of position, and that did nothing but help him be a better slot.

I’m pleased with his progress.”

Third stringer showing promise: It is no secret that Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara will be the two-headed monster at running back this season for the Vols.

But according to offensive coordinator Mike DeBord, running back John Kelly has stood out to him during spring practices.

“I like him a lot,” DeBord said. “He’s been tough. He’s running with great physical presence, and he’s learned some things. He’s gotten smarter in the pass protection and the rules and all that, so I really like what he’s been doing this spring.”

The true freshman did not see much play-

ing time in his first season at Tennessee, but he made the most of the opportunities he was given. Kelly ran the ball 40 times for 165 yards last season, averaging 4.1 yards per carry. The freshman also had his first career touchdown on a one-yard scurry in the Vols’ Outback Bowl victory over Northwestern.

DeBord said that Kelly has benefited from the added reps he has seen this spring.

“When a freshman comes in, and you present your terminology, it’s like walking into a foreign language class for the first time,” DeBord explained. “But now, you go the second time around, we’ve added a few wrinkles in our offense, but yet, the terminology hasn’t changed.”

Defensive line dinged up: Defensive line coach Steve Stripling entered the Ray and Lucy Hand Digital Studio on Thursday without the arm sling that he had worn for months for an injured shoulder.

Stripling joked that his players still make friendly cracks towards him about the injury but that he understands how his defensive line feels with the shoulder issues that have sidelined many of his linemen this spring. Six members of the defensive line are out this spring with varying injuries, but shoulder problems are the main

culprit for cutting a lot of players’ spring short.

The four-year defensive coach is still finding bright spots in the replacement line this offseason, but he still wishes that he could see his starting players perform.

“LaTroy (Lewis) has been the warrior of our group the whole spring, taking almost every rep,” Stripling said. “Last spring was a little tough, but this one’s almost a little bit more.

There’s certain days we’ve gone out there with seven D-linemen for the practice, so it’s challenging, especially with the young men and conditioning.”

However, Stripling still believes that his crew will be one of the toughest defensive lines in the country next year.

“A lot of the time, I can just look at the sideline, and they’re all standing there. That helps my attitude a little bit,” Stripling said. “The thing I was talking to the strength coach is that (Derek) Barnett’s, the (Kyle) Phillips’ and (Kendal) Vickers’ ... he’s having to hold them back in the weight room a little bit.

“They’re wanting to do more than they’re supposed to do at this point, so that’s a good attitude.”

UT seeks consistency against Gamecocks Rob Harvey Staff Writer Coach Serrano has emphasized consistency all this season, but the Vols have not always practiced what their coach preaches.

Tennessee will try to correct that problem in its road series against South Carolina this weekend.

So far this season the Vols have not clicked completely, and their inconsistency has led to some close loses.

Last weekend the bullpen was inconsistent, giving up six runs against Kentucky that cost Tennessee the win on Saturday and allowed Kentucky to blow the game open on Sunday.

The struggle continued Wednesday night as the bullpen surrendered two leads in a 6-5 win against Morehead State. However, those blown leads were partly due to some inconsistency from the defense who committed two costly errors.

“We’ve got to play better defense,” Serrano said. “When you have a bullpen struggling, we’ve got to play better defense. We have to pick those balls up, and it probably makes this game a lot easier.”

When the pitching staff has been decent this season, however, the bats have gone quiet for the most part. Despite impressive play by the trio of Nick Senzel, Vincent Jackson and Jordan Rodgers, the rest of the offense has been relatively silent at times. That was the case Wednesday.

“We didn’t swing the bats very well,” Serrano said. “We can continue to point the finger at the bullpen, but there’s a lot of other factors that are involved that are allowing us to struggle right now

as a team.”

The Vols will need to get out of their struggle quickly as they go into Columbia to face No. 8 South Carolina Gamecocks (24-5, 7-2).

The Gamecocks enter the series having just lost their first SEC series of the season to Vanderbilt.

However, before that series, they had swept Arkansas and Ole Miss, who took two out of three against the Vols earlier this season.

Their pitching staff leads the Gamecocks, which has been dominant this season. Their three starters, Braden Webb, Clarke Schmidt and Adam Hill, have a combined record of 17-2. All three starters have a sub-three ERA, and two of the starters, Webb and Schmidt, have ERAs under two.

The Gamecocks hitting has been no slouch either. John Jones, who is hitting .360 with six home runs and 33 RBI, leads the team. Alex Destino and Dom Thompson-Williams are also offensive threats as each are hitting over .300 and have four home runs.

The Vols will send the same starters to the mound as they did last weekend against Kentucky.

Aaron Soto (1-0) will take the mound on Friday as he will look to continue his impressive performance. Zach Warren (4-2) will start on Saturday as he will look to bounce back after suffering two losses in his last two starts. Andy Cox (2-3) will finish the weekend off as he looks to lower his relatively high ERA. The Vols will try and look at this game like every other game and not worry about the number in front of the team’s name.

Summitt resigns from head coaching job at Louisiana Tech Trenton Duffer Copy Editor Tyler Summitt, son of Hall of Fame coach Pat Summitt and Tennessee alum, resigned from his head coaching job at Louisiana Tech on Thursday, citing an inappropriate relationship as grounds for his resignation.

“I am profoundly disappointed in myself for engaging in a relationship that has negatively affected the people I love, respect and care about the most,” Tyler Summitt said in a statement released on Wednesday. “My hope, plans and prayers are to repair those relationships. I am appreciative of the opportunity I was given to coach at Louisiana Tech. I am heartbroken that my time has ended in Ruston, but because of my respect for the institution, it is best that I resign.”

After graduating from Tennessee in 2012, Summitt was hired at Marquette as an assistant coach before being taking the head coaching job at Louisiana Tech in April 2014. As head coach of the Lady Techsters, Summitt went 30-31 (1917 C-USA).

“The university has accepted his resignation and appreciates the contributions he has made to the growth and success of the Lady Techsters program during his tenure,” Louisiana Tech said in a separate statement that was also released on Wednesday. “Louisiana Tech will immediately begin the process of selecting a new head coach to lead the women’s basketball program and student-athletes forward.

Louisiana Tech wishes Tyler and his family the best of luck in the future.”

Summitt asked that the media and public respect the privacy of him and his family as they deal with the “difficult situation.”

Gabriel thriving as Vols’ ace David Bradford Staff Writer

When Erin Gabriel is on the mound nowadays, she no longer worries about the pain, the pitch count or how many days in a row she has performed.

She just pitches.

But after suffering through serious pain throughout her first three seasons at Tennessee after every pitch, Gabriel could not just pitch.

Rewind to the fall of 2012. Gabriel, a freshman excited to play for the Volunteer softball team, collapsed after awkwardly planting her foot after a pitch. Despite not being able to stand, forcing her catcher to carry her like a wounded soldier in battle, Gabriel thought very little of it.

“As an athlete you kind of block out pain,” Gabriel said. “You’re always told to, so at the moment I thought I tweaked it. I thought I would be fine and didn’t take it too seriously.”

But it was serious. Originally, Gabriel was diagnosed with a muscle strain. After a long process full of rest and treatments, an MRI in March of 2014 uncovered a torn labrum.

Attempts to avoid surgery failed, and during the procedure, the doctors discovered an additional problem.

An impingement forced the doctors to reshape Gabriel’s hip bone. After the labrum was repaired and a tendon was elongated, the two-year journey to a full recovery began.

The injury did more than keep Gabriel off the mound. It changed who she was as a pitcher.

“It’s really gratifying, especially when an athlete has to reinvent themselves like Erin did,” co-head coach Karen Weekly said. “Because the injury she suffered required her to come back and be a different kind of pitcher … She had to understand how to move the ball more and locate her pitches better … She’s bought into the mental side of pitching.”

The change does not appear to be hurting Gabriel’s performance. She is the ace of the pitching staff, winning 13 games and posting an ERA of 2.41.

“This is the first year I haven’t had to count my number of pitches or watch how many days in a row I pitched,” Gabriel said. “… And just mentally being able to go out there and not have to worry about that and

Life post-injury has changed a little.

Although she can no longer sprint or do squats as low as she once could, Gabriel simply enjoys being around her teammates more.

“Erin’s teammates love Erin because she plays the game with such great passion and energy,” Weekly said.

“And when you see a pitcher go out on the mound like that and command the circle with that kind of energy behind her, everybody just wants to make plays.”

More than the uphill physical battle, Gabriel tapped into her mental toughness to fight through the rehabs, rest and time away from the mound. It is an aspect Gabriel wants younger players to develop when battling through serious injuries.

“No one really talks to you about the mental side of the game,” Gabriel said.

“And you don’t really notice because you’ve always been so confident as a player that that confidence leaves very quickly. Working on your mental game throughout the whole recovery process is just as important as the physical side.”
