Vols finish strong on National Signing Day Jonathan Toye Sports Editor Tennessee coach Butch Jones hasn’t slept much in the past few days.

Instead, he spent those days visiting the homes of prospective recruits. When he wasn’t traveling, he was on the phone answering recruits’ questions. That didn’t save him much time for rest.

The hard work paid off Wednesday.

Tennessee’s 2016 National Signing Day featured more drama than the last two signing days, but it mostly played out in Tennessee’s favor. The Vols had to fight off the likes of Auburn and Ole Miss for the services of some of their more highly coveted recruits.

They eventually secured commitments from three blue-chip recruits in a 24-hour span and surged seven spots in 247’s team rankings, finishing signing day ranked No. 14 in 247’s team rankings.

Zika Virus in Texas A case of the Zika virus was discovered in Texas on Tuesday and was transmitted by sexual contact, not by a mosquito bite. The patient was discovered after reportedly having sex with someone who had returned from Venezuela, where the virus is widely circulating. The CDC is now expanding their advice to not only refraining from visiting several Latin American countries, but now to avoid sexual contact with anyone who has recently visited over 20 countries in Latin America. This includes either using a condom for men, avoiding all contact to semen for women or abstaining from sexual interactions entirely.

The Zika virus causes only mild symptoms in most adults and is often a silent infection. For new mothers, however, the virus is directly linked to a rare birth defect in newborns called microcephaly. This is the first case of the Zika virus confirmed in the US to be transmitted sexually.

Resentencing of Middle School Killer

Rand Paul out of Presidential Race

It has been 12 years since Michael Hernandez was convicted of murdering his best friend when both were in middle school. Now 24, Hernandez will return to court to find out whether his sentence will change. He was originally given a mandatory life sentence for stabbing friend Jaime Gough in their middle school bathroom. The new hearing has become mandatory following the 2012 Supreme Court case which decided juveniles could not immediately be sentenced to life without parole. It was found in his previous trial that Hernandez was obsessed — and content — with becoming a serial killer. His original sentence of life in prison is expected to be reassigned in the three day court process beginning this week, but he may receive parole after 25 years.

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul pulled out of the presidential race this morning. Paul’s campaign slogan “Take Our Country Back” had long been outshined by Donald Trump’s “make America great again” campaign. Paul’s “stick it to the man” tendencies began long ago in 2010 when he was first elected in the Senate — he was noted to squabble with GOP leaders on several occasions.

Again in 2013, Paul held the Senate floor for nearly 13 hours to oppose the nomination of John Brennan as CIA Director. He garnered a large coalition at the time, boosting his confidence to run in this year’s presidential race. He was able to compete in the first five prime time debates, but was cut from the sixth, later to be invited back for the seventh and final debates. But that was not enough for the Kentucky Senator, as his pull out was confirmed by his campaign manager this morning.

Donators to be speakers for Trailblazer series Caroline Mulloy Contributor The Office of Diversity and Inclusion performed this spring’s edition of the semi-annual African-American Trailblazer Series Wednesday night to celebrate the accomplishments of African Americans in the Knoxville community.

Keynote speaker Don Frieson, along with twin brother Ron, donated $1 million to the Frieson Black Cultural Center in October and is speaking for the Trailblazer Series as part of the 40th anniversary of the Center.

Vice Chancellor of Diversity Rickey Hall joined Frieson, asking questions about his legacy as a trailblazer, beginning with a question about how he arrived where he is today.

Frieson grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, with two siblings, where Frieson said he often experienced the Civil Rights Movement first hand.

“I was in third grade when Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated and we were watching everything unfold right there in the classroom,” Frieson said. “That’s when you started to see a lot of up close and personal (events).”

Frisson, a UT alumnus, said his mother worked

in education and prompted him to attend college.

“I was going to college whether I wanted to or not,” Frieson said. “(College) was the first experience where nobody made you do anything. You had to be a self-starter.”

Frieson became interested in attending the University of Tennessee because of the Fred Brown Scholarship Program, a path that became even more attractive when his father threatened to send him to the army.

As he sees it, “exposure is key” when transitioning from college into a real world job. He also emphasized how multiple experiences in different industries will work in one’s favor.

“Everyone wants to move up, but it is harder to move side to side,” Frieson said.

Frieson made many accomplishments in the business management industry succeeding his graduation from the university.

After an initial stint with Walmart as a district manager for a private fleet work, Frieson began working for Sam’s Club as the senior vice president for replenishing and planning, later graduating to executive vice president of operations.

“Talk to us about diversity and inclusion in the workplace and how you see that involved in your career and the importance in that,” Vice

Chancellor Hall asked Frieson.

“Stop thinking about diversity as race,” Frieson said. “(Diversity) is a group of people with different experiences and thought processes.”

Looking to the Frieson Black Cultural Center, what’s important to Frieson, more than anything else, is leaving his legacy behind.

Frieson said he wanted to give back to the University of Tennessee community by giving the future students an opportunity to excel.

Frieson gave a few tips on how to overcome adversity in the workplace as well as in life in general.

“The closer to the sun, the more you get burned,” Frieson said. “Adversity will knock you down, but you must always get up.”

Frieson was asked about his leadership philosophy and how he puts it to use in the work place. He said that everyone can contribute to an industry in some way, but a true leader will realize their employees’ limits.

Regarding diversity in people, Frieson claims that if you look around a room, you will most likely have something in common with every person.

“People are more alike than they are different, but we tend to focus on the differences,” Frieson said.

UT Professor, ORNL discover new elements Heiler Meek Contributor Researchers at The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and Robert Grzywacz, a physicist and professor at UT, were recently credited with discovering two of four new superheavy elements that will soon be added to the Periodic Table.

They are currently unnamed and go by the temporary monikers ununpentium (Uup) and ununseptium (Uus).

Professor Grzywacz said his research team’s involvement resulted from a collaboration between The University of Tennessee and ORNL. “ORNL was originally involved through providing the isotopes for this research, and that gave us a chance to also expand this involvement into (the development) of providing a detector system,” Grzywacz said.

Grzywacz explained that super-heavy elements are nearly impossible to observe in nature.

“We can only make them in a laboratory, because they are very unstable,” Grzywacz said.

Thus, a method was needed to detect the elements through lab research and the research team looked to fill that need.

Grsywacz said the effect of a physics concept known as “strong forces” is very complex and difficult to concretely describe, but they are key to the super-heavy elements’ instability. “(Strong forces) are nuclear systems,”

Grzywacz said. “The problem of the production of super-heavy elements is related to the probability of their survival in the reaction.” “(Strong forces are) effectively a result of some order which emerges in a relatively messy system of nearly three hundred nucleons put together in a very small volume,” Grzywacz said.

Direct applications for Uus and Uup are not here yet. Both elements can be yielded only in very small quantities as stable materials.

Maulik Patel, a Materials Science professor and researcher at UT, says these findings do not currently have any applications to the field of materials science, but they could in the far future.

Patel added that the elements could become usable in materials science “if you could make the elements more magnetic.”

Grzywacz is hopeful about what the findings mean for the future of the UT Physics Department and The Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

“The (discovery) will not only stay forever as a part of the human knowledge, but also can shape the future of science and technology in unpredictable ways,” Gryzwacs said.

Grzywacz said that the most rewarding parts of being an experimental physicist and professor are “the moment(s) when the students start to ‘get it’ and start making next steps in the right direction without (him).”

He is proud of his graduate students and hopes that research like this will continue to encourage students to study nuclear physics at UT.

10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. – Jazz is the word. Knoxville has been churning out a fair amount of opportunities to hear some great jazz performances, and it’s seeming to become synonymous with downtown brunch and lunch on Sundays. The sounds begin at 5 Bar at 10 a.m. and go until 3 p.m. there.

You can also find options at Bistro at the Bijou and Downtown Grill and Brewery, starting and lasting from noon to 2 p.m. and 12:30 to 3:30, respectively.

“The Boy” provides twists, not scares Hannah Moulton Copy Chief You’ve probably seen “The Boy” trailer, and you’ve most likely wondered what exactly you just watched.

That was my thought after I first saw the creepy trailer featuring a porcelain doll that goes by the name of Brahms.

However, “The Boy” isn’t your typical creepy doll horror film. Instead, Brahms was once an actual child. After a tragic accident claimed Brahms’ life, his parents obtained a doll bearing a striking resemblence to their former son. Doll Brahms is considered by his parents to be very much alive.

This backstory immediately gives the film an eerie vibe. To fuel their fantasy, the parents even go to such lengths as to hire a nanny to care for Brahms, and that’s how we meet the film’s main character.

Poor Maggie from the “Walking Dead” (I don’t know her real life name) is hired to spend her time in a giant mansion caring for a doll while being paid a large sum of money. Doesn’t seem too bad, right?

Well, true to horror film tropes, once Brahms’s parents go on vacation, things in the mansion get a little weird. Creepy things begin to happen around Brahms. Doors are slammed, voices are heard when no one is there and Brahms somehow manages to move from the spot where he was left.

The plot builds to keep you guessing what exactly is up with that doll. Is it a ghost? Is it a demon? Is everyone just crazy?

These questions definitely keep you on your toes throughout the entire film. All the way until the twist ending. That’s right—a twist ending.

However, the twist at the end doesn’t make up for the boring and unsurprising scares within the movie. I jumped more at the previews than I did watching the actual film.

Even when I did find myself getting a little scared at the movie, I usually snapped out of it once I could predict exactly how the scare would play out (it was usually pretty obvious).

“The Boy” really should have been marketed as a psychological thriller rather than a horror movie. The plot is good. The characters’ background stories are well developed, and they don’t immediately jump to the “all this stuff is happening because there’s a ghost”

Had I not had a free movie ticket, I would have been a little peeved at spending my money. “The Boy” works for a night where you don’t feel like watching something too complicated or frightening. If you want to be scared, I suggest watching something actually scary like “It Follows” or “The Shining.”

Restaurants, breweries in Maryville Jenna Butz

Less than 30 minutes south of Knoxville lies Maryville (Or Murruhvulle for you true Southerners). We often think of it as a small Appalachian town with little to offer in terms of entertainment — and especially in terms of food. However, a quick Yelp search and a short drive through the town reveals plenty of eateries to satisfy experienced foodies and noobs alike. Here are five of your best bets.

Bluetick Brewery Okay, so it’s not technically a “restaurant,” but beer counts as a meal if you drink enough of it, right? Try the in-house brewed beers on tap, and you can pair them with the food trucks the business has stop by on a regular basis. Also, Bluetick is Tennessee’s first co-op brewery, meaning you can have a vote in new brew flavors and brag about hanging out

at those exclusive, members-only events.

Foothills Bakery This little stop is the daughter store of the more upscale Foothills Milling Company, also in Maryville. The inside is a little unassuming, and you might be a little confused by the simplicity at first.

But once you order two giant sandwiches to share with a friend (please get the muffuletta because it is so perfect and worth your time), you’ll understand. Afterwards, if you have even a smidge of room left, get a pastry to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Jamacian Sunrise This brightly painted shack can’t be missed with its Rasta colors and Bob Marley mural. The authentic Jamaican eatery boasts Caribbean staples like jerk chicken and fried plantains with a hint of Southern comfort foods, such as mac and cheese and coleslaw. The best part is that they cook the food in giant smokers right out front, basically making it impossible to smell the meats and just drive past.

Lemon Grass Once, my cousin told me this was

the best sushi you could find in East Tennessee, and the Yelp reviews agree.

This sushi bar also serves Thai food, but again, it’s the sushi that they do best. In addition to the traditional California and spicy tuna rolls, you can also find dessert sushi with apples and peanut butter, crawfish sushi and tacos made with sushi fish. Even though it’s a farther drive than Nama or Chaiyo’s, it’s worth it to try something new.

Vienna Coffee House While it has all the offerings of your standard coffee shop/cafe, what really sets it apart is its relationship with the local music scene. Knoxville musicians are known to make the drive to perform here to a more intimate audience. What’s better than pairing new music with your favorite caffeinated (or decaffeinated) beverage? Plus, it’s a great place to get some homework done.

That’s the one thing about this staff: it’s a collaborative effort. It’s a group effort in all that we do. We recruit as a staff together. We kind of feed off of each other … Our challenge was to finish strong.”

The coaching staff accomplished that goal. The 2016 signing class wasn’t as highly ranked as the past two classes. But it’s also significantly smaller than the 2014 (32) and 2015 (30) classes. Tennessee built depth in those classes. That allowed the Vols to be more selective for the 2016 class.

“We have a recruiting profile, and it is about finding a right fit here at Tennessee,” Jones said. “We had some very specific needs in our program this year.”

Jones said Tennessee made it a priority to recruit versatile players capable of playing on offense, defense, and special teams.

Byrd granted that wish with his commitment. Byrd’s ability to impact the game on special teams is evident on his game film.

He also showed he can play either wide receiver or cornerback. “The great thing about Tyler Byrd is position flexibility,” Jones said. “That’s the other thing that we wanted. We wanted to bring in pl ayers that could play a multitude of different positions. It provides you flexibility within your football program. So, to be able to add an individual like him really adds to the dynamics of your football team.”

Warrior – the son of former Dale Carter and the No. 4 safety – committed on Wednesday around 8 a.m, giving Tennessee its second four-star recruit in 12 hours.

Tennessee had to sweat it out with Kongbo, who was choosing between Tennessee and Ole Miss. The British Columbia native initially committed to Tennessee in late November before deciding to reopen his commitment on Jan. 5.

Around 1 p.m. on Wednesday, He made his final decision, placing the finishing touches on Tennessee’s recruiting class.

“We thought we had a great nucleus in this recruiting class already intact, and now if we could add to that, we wanted to do that,” Jones said. “We set forth, and we’re going to go try to get the best players that fit our recruiting profile, no matter where they’re at.

“Whether it’s Tyler Byrd, whether it’s Jonathan Kongbo — those individuals to us are difference makers. They make you better being in your football program.”

Jones praises players for recruiting efforts David Bradford Staff Writer National Signing Day has morphed into a media spectacle as access to coaches and players increases. More than ever, the recruiting process is a year-round job.

“Signing day has kind of turned into a season within itself,” Jones said. “… this (recruiting class) is a culmination of one to two to three years of hard work.”

Jones accredits the long-windedness of the recruiting process to the necessity of trust between coaches and players.

“It’s really about relationships. We’re in a relationship business,” Jones said.

Due to the grueling nature of recruiting, Jones also gave immense praise to his coaching staff, who spend weeks away from their families on the recruiting trail. Jones also thanked the donors who provide airfare, which allows the coaching staff to easily travel around the country.

Best Ambassadors The coaching staff is in charge of recruiting.

However, it is the current and former players who seal the deal for prospects.

Though a highly respected recruiter himself, Jones knows that the program’s most valuable ambassadors are the ones who don the orange jerseys on game days.

“Truly invested,” Jones said of the players. “That was evident today, that was evident throughout the entire recruiting process.

They’re our best ambassadors that we have.

They’re our best recruiters for Tennessee football.”

Leadership Qualities Arguably the most important position in sports is the quarterback position. The Vols were able to successfully lure dual-threat quarterback Jarrett Guarantano early on in the recruiting process. Despite receiving offers from numerous schools, Guarantano only visited Tennessee, showing his dedication to the program.

“Getting a quarterback to commit early was big for us,” Jones said. “One of the intangible

traits you look for is leadership qualities and Jarrett Guarantano has those leadership qualities.”

Expanding Borders Great college football programs extend their borders and snatch recruits from rival programs. This recruiting class was especially diverse for Tennessee. The Vols picked up five recruits from Florida, four from Georgia, three from Tennessee, and three from Kansas.

But Jones isn’t taking the talent in Tennessee for granted, saying that the program’s success stems from home.

“The pride of this state means so much for an in-state individual to represent the University of Tennessee,” Jones said.

Home has now become larger than the 41,143 square miles the state of Tennessee encompasses. Tennessee’s influence on athletes in other states has led Jones to believe that other states have become home territory.

“To be able to go in those other states and assert ourselves was very big for ourselves and our program,” Jones said.

Lady Vols look to make up for loss Trenton Duffer Copy Editor Throughout Monday’s press conference, Arkansas head coach Jimmy Dykes kept repeating one simple phrase when asked about Thursday’s matchup against the Lady Vols. “They’re still Tennessee.�

The statement isn’t entirely true — the Lady Vols aren’t the same as some of the past Tennessee teams. Tennessee (13-8, 4-4) is clinging to a No. 23 ranking, barely preserving the Lady Vols’ streak of 563 weeks in the Associated Press poll.

It’s not the season Coach Warlick and the team initially envisioned.

But the four-year coach feels that the team is beginning to right the ship. “They knew what they were doing when they signed up,� Warlick said Wednesday. “They’ve just got to come out to this arena and look around, and they understand what it’s like to play at Tennessee. “I think we’ve had slumps. I think they understand that they have to get their focus back and get back on the right track.�

The Lady Vols’ Achilles heel has seemingly been zone defenses. After Syracuse’s zone gave Tennessee headaches back in November, the rest of the Lady Vols’ opponents have tightened up down low and made the Lady Vols beat them from the perimeter — a feat that Warlick’s squad hasn’t been able to do successfully.

Tennessee has gone 10-8 since the Syracuse game, but sophomore Jaime Nared feels that the team is getting better at getting the ball into the paint to get easier buckets. “Every team plays their zone differently,�

Nared said. “Some people play it compact because we have such talented posts ‌ I think we’ve gotten better at it as far as playing against zones. We’re going to keep getting

better at it.�

Now Tennessee has a chance at redemption on Thursday when Arkansas comes to town.

The last time the Lady Vols faced the Razorbacks (9-14, 4-5 SEC), Arkansas outscored Tennessee 43-27 in the second half after the Lady Vols held a 32-21 lead after halftime. The Razorbacks relied heavily on a 25-point performance from forward Jessica Jackson and a 46.4 second half shooting percentage.

Tennessee, meanwhile, shot 28.3 from the field in the second half. Since then, the team has been coming out earlier from their halftime break to get a better shootaround before the second half begins. “We have a lot of potential,� junior guard Jordan Reynolds said. “Our bench players and our starters have the ability to put the ball in the hoop because we all have confidence in each other.�

Injury Report: Bashaara Graves, who didn’t play during Sunday’s win over Alabama, should be ready to play on Thursday against the Razorbacks barring a setback.

Graves sprained her ankle in the waning minutes of a practice last week and was in a walking boot for the entire Alabama game.

Warlick believes that Graves could have played but didn’t want to chance injuring the team’s third-highest scorer. Warlick also said that Wednesday’s practice will play a large factor in deciding whether the senior plays on Thursday. “She’s going to do some things I think (Wednesday) on the court, but I think it’s going to be a game-day decision,� Warlick said. “She’s going to be fine, but we aren’t going to push it.�

The Lady Vols will take on Arkansas at 7 p.m. Thursday night in Thompson-Boling Arena. The game has the potential to be Holly Warlick’s 100th career win.

The stages of best friendship Emily Moore Day to Day

We all have that friend that we would do anything for and vice-versa. Whether it’s bringing them their favorite candy to cheer them up, listening to their petty problems, giving them a harsh dose of reality or helping them hide a body, there are no boundaries in your friendship.

This can be a marvelous thing, yet also the worst thing ever at times. Whether you have been friends with them for a decade or a year, take a moment to try to think back to the time when you first met them.

Back to the gloriously awkward stage of friendship when you hid the entirety of your weirdness to keep them around before unleashing the beast. There are a few stages that a friendship must go through before reaching the ultimate “Best Friend” stage. In my expert opinion, it goes a little something like this: 1. Awkward small talk: You just met. Initially you hit it off pretty well — you have the same sense of humor and get to know each other in a common group of friends, maybe in a classroom setting.

Conversation flows well even though it’s mostly about the weather or school. With no warning the conversation dies. Words, those elusive and tricky bastards, are hard to form together into a single sentence to bring the conversation back. Oh god, it’s so awkward. You cough and they shift uncomfortably in their chair. Someone else comes along and saves you, or you’re forced to uncomfortably excuse yourself to escape it.

2. The first time you hang out one on one: You make dinner plans with a few people and at the last minute everyone bails — except you and your future bestie. Sure, you have known each other for a few weeks now, but you’re unsure if you are ready to take on the commitment of having to sit at the same table with them and endure more painful small talk. They arrive and though it is a little tense at first, by the end you are glad you had the chance to get to know them better. You’re even friends on Snapchat now.

3. Not afraid to double or triple text: The boundary of caring about whether or not you’re being annoying has fallen away.

4. Telling them the truth: You notice a piece of lettuce in their teeth or maybe their hair is looking particularly rough or there is a stain they overlooked on their shirt. Without hesitation you tell them. At first it may come off as polite. Such as: “Excuse me, you have something in your teeth.” But you know it’s beginning to get real when you say something along the lines of “what the hell is going on with your hair.”

5. First time you get drunk together: Of course this is AFTER you turn 21, you rascals. AFTER. But all walls fall away as bros and gals bond with their blooming best friend. Enduring the hangover

together the next morning just makes your bond even closer.

6. Don’t ask to come over: It’s been a rough day and you don’t even have the energy to call and ask if you can come over. You just kind of show up. If they’re lucky, they get a text announcing your arrival.

If not, well ... too late.

7. Don’t get embarrassed anymore: Your favorite moments are the shining opportunities when you personally get to embarrass them. Laughing at each other is something that is never taken personally but is more like a sport. Of course it’s a harmless thing.

Most of the time.

8. No judgement: Burping, farting, wrong doings, deepest darkest secrets, etc. None of it matters.

You’re in it together for the long haul now.

9. Meet the fam: Of course they see why you are best friends. No one else can handle your weirdness like them and throw it right back at ya.

10. Break the law together: I mean like jaywalking, people. Calm down. (Or do I?) Friends are what get us through the worst days.

They are with us throughout our life, and time doesn’t judge how good of a friend they are. If your first reaction is to call your best friend when you get good/bad news or you want alone time without actually being alone, you have a keeper. They are rare, humiliating, fun and terrible creatures. Keep them close to your heart.

If I’m Honest

My opinion on sports is no secret. Some of you may remember my column from last semester about giant-eyed primates and General Neyland.

If not, then consider it shamelessly plugged.

That piece is essentially still true. I’m largely indifferent about football. The same is true of baseball and basketball — and every other sport for that matter. I’m typically pretty bored with them after the first five minutes of watching.

Do sports? I have before. I’m pretty terrible at most of them, as you might imagine. Anyone who says they “do sports,” for instance, probably isn’t athletically inclined.

When I played basketball, I contributed more points to the competitors than my own team. In soccer, I wore the wrong kinds of shoes and ran out of breath constantly. In baseball, I couldn’t even slide properly.

Yes, you read that right. I made a mess of falling down.

I blame it on the fact that I’ve never been competitive when it comes to sports. Once, after my team was upset by a loss, I turned to my then-coach, who also happened to be my father, and said, “But Dad, didn’t you see how happy the other team’s kids were?”

Looking back, I see the conscious decision he made not to ditch the car we were in.

And then I found myself in need of sports credits to graduate high school. What was an unathletic boy to do? I decided to take up the only

You may not know this, but you would be hard pressed to find a recreational drug less harmful than lysergic acid — or LSD. Created in 1938 by Swiss chemist Albert Hoffman, and first used on human subjects in 1943, lysergic acid’s short and influential 30 years under research showed great promise for practical, medical application. Studies showed LSD to be non-toxic and non-addictive. They also showed that lysergic acid was an excellent agent in combating alcoholism, with over half of test subjects proclaiming their trip was a turning point in their addiction. But instead of continuing work in this promising field, ignorance triumphed and progress halted.

The growth of the counterculture movement of the sixties popularized drug use among the youth, and many soldiers were coming back from the war with new opiate habits. The silent majority in America pushed back against what they saw as destruction of Western society and Christian values. Older generations made a conservative push to expand the powers of the federal government to combat drug use, following a trend of increasing criminalization of substance possession. The Controlled Substance Act passed overwhelmingly in 1970: 342-7 in the House and 54-0 in the Senate.

My personal history with the sport is tedious to report. Not unlike a nicotine addict, I’ve quit and started back several times. It is perhaps the single-most infuriating endeavor I’ve ever undertaken — next to driving through Knoxville at 5 p.m. ... or on Cumberland Avenue at any point, ever.

The main reason it’s so maddening has to do with how people see themselves. Nobody likes to think they are bad at something, and golf is not an easy sport to play. Failure is not just an option — but for most people, it’s a given.

In team sports, at least you can diffuse failure through other people. But in an individual sport, like golf, you have no one to blame but yourself.

It’s not like tennis or chess, either, where you can blame your failure on the skill of your opponent.

Technically, your only opponent in golf is the course, which is just several acres of land with some hills, sand, water and a few flags stuck in the flat bits. The course isn’t skilled at anything.

As a result, you typically end up defeating yourself, and that’s the hardest hit an ego can take.

Add the sheer lunacy of it to the self-defeating nature of the game, and you start to understand why it’s an absurd pastime.

Essentially some 15th-century, Scottish drunkards got together and decided they would use crooked sticks to whack tiny balls hundreds of yards around some fields in the countryside.

I’m going to recommend the Robin Williams bit on golf at this point. It’s funnier than I’ll ever be.

Further lunacy includes the fact that golfers speak almost exclusively in sexual innuendo. Walk out onto a course this weekend and listen. You’ll hear grown men saying genuinely idiotic things to golf balls all morning — “Get up!” “Bite!” “Get in the hole!” “Hit the stick!” “Blow it!”

And it’s not a cheap habit to maintain. A decent set of clubs will cost you upwards of $1,500.

Then you have to get a membership to some private club because you’re a good capitalist. This will become a large monthly expense. Once you figure out that you’re terrible, you’ll invest in lessons, which will improve your game marginally.

Typically lessons make you just good enough to think coming back is a reasonable idea.

Eventually, you end up broke and perpetually irritable, which is terrible for your blood pressure.

Then you’ll have to step back and ask yourself why you didn’t take up something cheaper and better for your health. Like fishing. Or hedge fund management. Or Russian roulette.

With all of that said, I believe my Sunday tee time is set for 9 a.m.

Damn it.

Of course, this measurement did nothing to stop the use and demand of the drug, but it did lead to consumers looking for legal loopholes. Almost instantly, a new batch of drugs entered the market.

With slight adjustments in chemical structure, developers could dodge federal regulations by inventing unique molecules that mimicked the original’s effects, but were too new for proper regulations to be in place. DOM, 2C-B and 25C-NBOMe are a few popular examples, all mimicking lysergic acid.

Unfortunately, not all drugs are created equal.

Many of these new drugs are just as safe as LSD and, with proper research, could have potential in the medical field — but some are dangerous, and sometimes even fatal.

LSD is colorless, odorless and tasteless. People have no way of telling what their blotter paper has been soaking in. This can create tragic results for thrill seekers who are unaware that they’re consuming dangerous dosages.

January 23, 2016: Irish teenager Alex Ryan and his friends consumed some powdered “LSD” at a house party. Within the hour, all six of them were rushed to the hospital. Fortunately, five of the young adults survived. Alex was not so lucky. After falling into a coma, his body shut down and he was declared dead within the week. What he thought was LSD turned out to be 25C-NBOMe — one

of the most dangerous psychedelics that has been passed off as lysergic acid by dealers. Unfortunately, Alex’s story is not unique. There are numerous cases of our youth facing fatal consequences for experimenting with something they thought they would be safe with.

How can we combat this? Fortunately, some progress has been made in the past few years.

Switzerland finally allowed clinical trials of lysergic acid on human subjects again for medical research for the first time in 40 years. Other countries have also been looking into researching the benefits of controlled psychedelics like MDMA, LSD and psilocybin, including the U.S. and other European states. A heartening example in the U.S. would be the recent experimentation with MDMA to help veterans fight PTSD. As of now, psychedelics are far too taboo for lawmakers to make a push for legalization or even regulation of them. But with a more liberal policy on research, there is hope that the massive amount of misinformation surrounding lysergic acid will slowly start to cede.
