DISPATCHES Jeffrey Sterling, former CIA officer, was convicted Monday in federal court for disclosing details of covert operations to a New York Times reporter, according to reports.

Convicted of nine felony counts of unauthorized disclosure of national defense information, Sterling was originally accused of leaking classified information to New York Times reporter James Risen about a top secret CIA operation to undermine Iran’s nuclear program. According to prosecutors, Sterling was attempting to get back at the CIA after being fired from the agency, and the exposure of information Sterling released damaged American efforts to halt Iran’s nuclear weapons program and put lives at risk. He will be sentenced on April 24.

Billionaire brothers Charles G. and David H. Koch announced that their political network plans to spend around $900 million in the 2016 presidential campaign, an amount that has never been matched by any single outside group. The purported aim is for the Koch brother’s political network to have financial power equivalent to the Democratic and Republican parties. The proposed budget will be directed to advertising, data-gathering technology, activism at the grassroots level and other campaign strategies. This budget was unveiled Monday at a meeting of the Freedom Partners Chamber of Commerce, an organization with ties to the Koch brothers.

On Monday, 10 people died after a Greek air force F-16 jet crashed at a base in Los Llanos in southeastern Spain, authorities said. According to a senior Spanish defense official, eight of those killed were French military personnel and two were Greek pilots.

The jet crashed on takeoff and hit other planes on the ground during a NATO training exercise. Of the 21 people injured, all were either French or Italian. The NATO flight training course at the Spanish base has 750 participants, including pilots, ground crews and other support, from nine countries: the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Belgium, Denmark and Greece, the Spanish air force reported on its website last week.

In the Jan. 26 issue of The Daily Beacon, an article titled, “Student Health Center provides students with medical ‘advantage’” contained information requiring further clarification. The article implied that “Obamacare” is a healthcare plan.

In fact, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act is a federal statute enacted with the goal of increasing the affordability and quality of health insurance through an online insurance marketplace. As the state has not expanded Medicaid, Tennesseans have fewer options for health coverage through the ACA than people in states where Medicaid is growing.

OUTreach Center to provide new kind of sexual education Tanner Hancock Copy Editor

“The sex-ed you always wanted in high school, but you never got.”

This is how OUTreach Director Donna Braquet described “SexEd Queered,” a weekly education program that aims to present an inclusive approach to sexual safety and knowledge. Co-sponsored by the student-run Sexual Health Advisory Group, the class plans to continue its unique educational approach this semester following its initial run last year.

Braquet said the program deviates from the traditional approach to sexual education, which she said has become all too commonplace among college students.

“It’s basically sexual health information that is inclusive of LGBTQ identities,” explained Braquet, noting topics of discussion range from fertility prevention to sexually transmitted infections protection. “It’s not ‘abstinence only’ like you might have been taught in high school.

You might have only talked about these

things in a very awkward sort of setting with your teacher in high school.”

While many topics of discussion will focus on LGBTQ sexual issues and concerns, Braquet stressed the class is open to anyone, as long as they are accepting of differing lifestyles.

For Kayla Frye, a junior in global studies and co-chair of the Sexual Health Advisory Group, the mission of providing a safe space for LGBTQ students to learn about sexual education has proven a success. “(SexEd Queered) has been especially useful in making sure that its target audience, LGBTQIA students, know that it

will be safe space for them to learn about and discuss topics pertaining to all facets of sexuality education,” Frye said.

Originally, the class was held in the OUTreach Center, but larger than expected crowds led to the moving of the class to a larger space in Melrose Hall.

To critics of SexEd Queered’s approach to sexual education, Frye offers her own set of criticism as to what it means to be LGBT in the Volunteer state.

“In the state of Tennessee ‘traditional sexuality education’ means that anyone who isn’t straight and cisgender is excluded,” Frye explained. “Like it or not, many people of all genders and orientations do have sex

UT language institute provides support for foreign exchange students Heidi Hill

Each year at UT, hundreds of international students arrive on campus to experience what is, for many, their first taste of American culture and life in an English-dominated nation.

But after they step off the plane, ready to live in a disorienting new nation, who is there to help make the adjustment for these students?

Created to guide international students along the way, UT’s English Language Institute serves as a valuable tool to teach the language essentials and encourage conversation and camaraderie among international students.

For ELI instructor and English professor Erin Smith, every classroom should resemble a home for the international students who study English as a second language at UT. “All of my classrooms are interactive, whatever the skill is, and some are naturally more interactive than others, particularly the listening and speaking class,” Smith said.

She noted the ELI program is broken down into four essential categories: grammar, listening and speaking, reading comprehension and writing.

Camila Silveira, a Brazilian international student in kinesiology, called English a skeleton key to the rest of the world, allowing her to interact with new people and cultures that would be hard to do in her native Portuguese.

“Most people speak English, if not as their first language then as their second,” Silveira said. “So, I started studying to help me in college to read articles and because I like traveling and meeting new people. It’s an easier way to communicate with different people.”

Silveira said her English has improved dramatically since coming to the United States through studying at ELI and having conversations with native speakers. As she continues to interact with Americans, Silveira said she hopes to become more fluent in the language.

“Since I arrived here I can express myself better, I think, but I still wish I could be more fluent,” she explained. “I don’t have many American students to talk to. If we don’t have someone to practice with, then we can’t improve.”

Though students enter ELI with varying levels of English experience, Smith said a strong community with a variety of learners that encourages even the most reluctant of students is a crucial element.

“I remember I had a student who came and she was very, very

shy, and when she spoke, she spoke with a very quiet voice to where people could hardly even hear her,” Smith said of a recent Vietnamese student.

Despite the student’s homesickness, Smith worked with her to gain confidence and project her voice when giving speeches in class.

“It was like seeing a different person, by the end of it,” Smith said.

Stefan Leitner, an electrical engineering graduate student from Austria, said working with other international students who are dealing with the same problems helped him overcome his initial hesitancy to speak English.

“I was shy, I was afraid to make mistakes, but then I said to myself ‘(screw) it,’ nothing is going to happen,” Leitner said.

Nadira Intan Octavia, an ESL major from Indonesia, agreed, saying the absence of judgment from her classmates and American students has allowed her English to continue to grow.

A long-range global exchange can be difficult for some students, Smith explained, particularly if there are few or no other students who share this connection and represent their homeland alongside them.

Silveira agreed, admitting she struggled with loneliness in her first weeks at UT. “It made me really sad, I had a really hard time adapting to here,” Silveira said. “I didn’t have many classes with other Brazilians, and I couldn’t really talk to many Americans and become friends, and I wasn’t expecting this.”

Smith said encouraging native English students through ELI’s “Conversation Partners Program” can combat this feeling of isola-Stefan Leitner tion by introducing international students to American students.

In the best-case scenario, a UT student volunteer who studies Arabic, for example, would be paired with an Arabic-speaking student — should their schedules align.

“I had some that have ended up being really good friends with their language partners,” Smith said. “I had one student who invited his partner to Thanksgiving with his family, so they both got to learn about each other’s cultures very directly.”

To Smith, interaction between fellow students and instructor in a group setting remains the best teaching context for international students seeking to learn a second language.

“You get a lot of different opinions when you have a group of people from all over the world in one room, and it’s interesting to see people become aware of ideas that they’d never thought about,” Smith said.

Leitner said by interacting with Americans and international students alike, he has encountered numerous ideas and world views he would never have discovered in his native Austria.

“Everyone told me it would broaden my horizons, and it has,” Leitner said. “You get to know other cultures more and get a better understanding of them and accept them more. Because when I’m at home, I’m with people of the same race, for the most part, and here it is more diverse.

“I love America. That’s why I came here.”

Colleges meet in Nashville to combat sexual assaults Associated Press

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — A two-day summit focused on fighting sexual assaults at college campuses is drawing about 400 officials from 76 schools across Tennessee.

Media report the meeting begins Tuesday at Tennessee State University and will feature national experts who will offer training on issues like defining consent, prevention and complying with changing federal laws.

“We believe students have every right to expect to be safe on our campus,” University of Tennessee President Joe DiPietro said last week in a conference call with reporters. “We want to do everything we can to be there and support our students when they need us most.”

The idea for the Tennessee Sexual Assault and Relationship Violence Summit came about after revisions to federal standards and laws on how schools should respond to and

report assaults.

It is being held in the midst of a high-profile rape trial against two former Vanderbilt football players.

The summit is scheduled to last through Wednesday.

“Training on this subject is not just the required thing to do, it’s the moral thing to do,” said John Morgan, chancellor of the Tennessee Board of Regents. “What we believe is that this summit will help our campuses meet these objectives outlined by our national leaders.”

College leaders say collaboration between schools on this scale is a first in the state and shows the urgency of the matter.

“Preventing and responding to sexual assaults and relationship violence is a priority in Washington and across the country and, now more than ever, in Tennessee,” DiPietro said. “We’ve not only heightened our focus in Tennessee, we also agree that we can be more effective at combating sexual violence by working together.”

ORNL develops new cyber security technology Associated Press

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. — A new weapon against malware has been developed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The Knoxville News Sentinel reports an 11-person tech squad has developed Hyperion, which they say is able to identify malicious software even if it’s not on a list of known threats.

The lab signed a licensing agreement recently with R&K Cyber Solutions LLC, which allows the company to commercialize the technology.

According to a statement from the company, it plans to make Hyperion available commercially later this month.

Stacy Prowell, who led the ORNL team that developed Hyperion, says he thinks it will have longevity because it attacks malware at the nutsand-bolts level.

“What it’s really doing is automated reverse engineering of the compiled software to figure out what the behavior is going to be when it’s run in all cases,” Prowell said in a telephone interview.

“It’s attacking a very challenging problem,” he said.

He said the technology has been in development for a decade and can check for known malicious operations and domain-specific problems.

“This technology helps detect vulnerabilities and can uncover malicious content before it has a chance to execute,” Prowell said in a statement provided by the lab.

The statement said Hyperion’s scanning capabilities are among the most comprehensive available.

“This approach is better than signature detection, which only searches for patterns of bytes,” Prowell said in a statement. “It’s easy for somebody to hide that — they can break it up and scatter it about the program so it won’t match any signature.”

R&K CEO Joseph Carter said in a statement that software behavior computation is an emerging science and technology that will have a “profound effect on malware analysis and software assurance.”

“Computed behavior based on deep functional semantics is a much-needed cyber security approach that has not been previously available,” Carter said. “Unlike current methods, behavior computation does not look at surface structure.

Rather, it looks at deeper behavior patterns.”

Moments captured in memories, not posts

This is a reminder that your password will expire on some day, some time soon – if you do not change your password, you will be locked out of the universe, forever.

This message — or at least, a similar version — has arrived urgently in my email every day for the last two weeks, demanding that I update my password and better secure my accounts within the university’s systems. Chances are, you’ve received it too. Password reminders are ubiquitous and not just on college campuses — whether in workplaces or social media, passwords control our access to the world around us.

Anyone raised in this era of social networks and personal data plans relies on such words and phrases, nonsensical combinations of memory.

They have invaded our daily lives, growing exponentially at the rate we increase connectivity — more avenues open, more doors and locks are needed.

At a recent seminar presented by Amber Roessner, an assistant professor in journalism and a media historian, this dependence on passwords started a conversation: what will the future of historical research look like?

Imagine the duties of historians in the libraries of the year 2080.

No longer will they rummage through boxes of archived letters and speech transcripts; instead, they’ll scroll through digital records, culled from (by then) generations of email, Facebook accounts and Twitter feeds.

Forget monochrome film; they will remember us through Instagram posts with Nashville filters.

On a hungover Sunday morning, these digital footprints seem like nothing more than idle entertainment. Snapchats of drunk teenagers singing karaoke don’t feel like recordings; they feel real, as if our iPhone screens are portals into the private lives of those around us, as if we’re really there — not here in bed downing Advil. We create a world

so interconnected, it’s as if everyone’s in the same virtual reality with each other. All you have to do is plug in.

But all these posts and updates and Yaks – they are more than temporary images flashing information across our minds. They are trails of ones and zeros that say something about who we are and what we believe, data streams that exist in a world we cannot see. They will become historical documents, and someday — long after we’ve been unplugged — they will be all that is left of us.

By then, I suppose it won’t matter if I changed my password or not. Maybe Facebook and Google will have sold our information to the highest bidders, some new breed of historical research firm that combines capitalism and data-mining.

All those nonsensical catchphrases and number combinations will be rendered pointless, rotting into meaningless reminders of privacy we once held dear like fences with holes in them, or rusty locks to long-forgotten doors.

When someday comes, every social media post and text message will fossilize into the official recorded history of our lives, the remains of our shared virtual reality.

Maybe that should make us more cautious about what we put on the Internet; maybe that should make us excited to live in such a digital age. We have the ability to preserve ourselves in perpetuity, and for better or worse, we have eagerly begun. Tomorrow is now.

But remember that the only memories you can own for yourself are the ones that have no passwords. They’re the ones we make beyond the cell phone screen — the things we’ve seen.

Reviving The Strip

The Strip has been stripped from the essential qualities that create a quality drunken night.

First to be stripped were the underage clubs.

Rumorz with a “z” was the last to go, and its $5 liquor pitchers sadly along with it.

Not only are underage partying places important for the under-aged, but they are also essential for the over-aged who wish to get intoxicated at a low price, relive their young years or pick up babes who might actually dig them. Without a place for all the creeps to creep, they end up in the normal bars—yuck.

The Strip is also slacking in jam band venues.

Last semester we lost the bar that was holding our strip together. Tin Roof was the only bar that played live music. Granted Jack n’ Diane’s Dueling Piano Bar plays live music, but the vibe doesn’t even begin to feel like you’re relaxing to live music—it’s an active audience vibe.

Without jam bands, dancing is limited to club music, aka grinding or circle dances. This fun only attracts those tipping over the legal limit. When live music is at a focus point, people can freely dance at any inebriated level, unabashedly.

The Strip is missing its variety.

The poppin’ bars right now on the Strip are Goal Post Tavern (yes, its called that, not OCI), Hannah’s and Cool Beans — all within 50 feet of one another. This is dangerously close because

This fun only attracts those tipping over the legal limit.” you soon find out the same people are everywhere you go, even if you hit all three. There isn’t enough distance to make the spaces truly separate entities.

The Strip also lacks variety of attire. When I was last at Goal Post Tavern, so were 50 or so girls and guys dressed up in ‘hip-hop’ attire. In-group,

out-group seems to be a focus of the Strip at times when these bar-crawls crowd the counters.

Power-in-numbers takes over and the ‘dressed up’ get exceptionally obnoxious. Let me make myself clear, being obnoxious happens to be a strong suit of mine, but I am only one girl, not 50.

Even when there aren’t themed groups on the Strip, it still lacks in clothing variety. Button downs and whatever girlish fashion is super hot flaunt the bar stools. Those who have their own style stick out like a stray bra strap.

No fear, I believe there is a way to save our strip from its lackluster veneer. One simple solution could cure our problem: branching out. The Half Barrel, Jack n’ Diane’s, Fort Sanders Yacht Club and Longbranch Saloon are all bars that serve alcohol. By mixing up the pot, variety can seep back into things and shop owners might actually believe students would take their business elsewhere and open up another 18+ club, and Longbranch Saloon might be revived and start playing killer bands again.

Next time you’re on the Strip, take a chance on a lesser-known bar. Together we can reestablish the Strip’s luster.

Five steps to fleeing the Friend Zone The dreaded friend zone can be best summed up by Biz Markie’s, “Just a Friend,” in which he says, “You, you got what I need but you say he’s just a friend.”

The friend zone is this relationship purgatory that asks the questions, “did she just stick her finger up my butt to be funny, or is this foreplay?”

Step one: Be overly kind to your potential partner, and expect no physical compensation. In time it will surely pay off.

Step two: Realize that step one is why you are in the friend zone in the first place.

Various people in the friend zone are pigeonholed into the, “nice guy” or “sweet girl” stereotype. This could be due to his or her lack of assertiveness. Remaining constantly neutral in an attempt to avoid uncomfortable situations may come across as a lack of interest. For some, making your intentions clear from the beginning is the simplest solution.

Step three: Do not use the friend zone as a copout for why you are not getting laid. Just because you act like a decent human being to someone does not mean the universe will instantly reward you. The truth is: if you’re only nice to a woman (and hey, even a man), because you want to get with him or her, you are not nice.

Step four: Maybe they just aren’t into you.

Some people are flat-out incompatible. She might think you are too old for her and does not wish to be the Woody Allen and Soon-Yi Previn type of couple. Maybe your personality is on tack but the physical chemistry just isn’t happening. If that’s the case, take the paper bag off your head and move to less shallow waters.

Step five: Just remember that if Ron Stoppable scored Kim Possible, then there just may be a glimmer of hope for you. All that’s left now is to devise a four-year plan, ultimately leading up to when you reveal your true feelings and live happily ever-after.

Unfortunately, the real world hardly plays out that way, and while you are wasting time fantasizing about the relationship you are letting the “one” slip away. So in the words of Biz Markie, “Please listen to the message that I say, and don’t ever talk to a girl who says she just has a friend.”

Tedeschi Trucks Band rocks Tennessee Theatre Sterling Martin Contributor

Music lovers of every kind crowded into the Tennessee Theatre on Sunday night to see none other than the Tedeschi Trucks Band, headed by the legendary guitarist Derek Trucks and his wife Susan Tedeschi.

The night began with a performance from the Greyhounds, whose smooth guitar and intricate keyboard jams prepared the audience for what was in store.

Afterward, shouts, whistles and screams arose from the crowd as the lights dimmed and the 11 members comprising the Tedeschi Trucks Band took the stage.

Trucks, known for his talent as a virtuoso slide guitarist, stole the spotlight for most of the night by constantly shredding without a single flaw. This, paired with the guitar and angelic voice of Tedeschi, made it nearly impossible for anyone to sit. Even those who did remain seated couldn’t sit still, whether it was a simple head bob or spastic air drumming and feet stomping.

Although the husband and wife couple act as a lead for the band, the rest of the instrumentalists were far from hidden in the shadows. Together, the band played as if the members have known each other all their

lives. Their individual styles and talents shined through the entire performance, perfectly coinciding with Trucks and Tedeschi.

Stunning solos were alternated and threaded between jams, quickly changing pace time and time again. At one point, Trucks took a seat and played a mellow, slow-paced riff with only Tedeschi accompanying with her voice. The band called for a clap-a-long with the audience during the intimate song, making the performance feel personal for even those in the balcony.

The melding of styles including blues, rock, soul, Southern rock, jazz and more gave an ever-moving sound that has earned the band enormous credit and praise.

Before forming the Tedeschi Trucks Band, Trucks and Tedeschi debuted a project called “Soul Stew Revival� in 2007, which was constituted mostly of performing their individual work together. After finally growing into its current state, the band decided on writing and playing original material.

Trucks was introduced to the music scene at an early age. As he was just turning 20 years old, Trucks became a member of The Allman Brothers Band. He performed with the group occasionally as a stand-in instrumentalist until becoming a resident member in 1999. His uncle, Butch Trucks, was a founding member and drummer for

In the same manner of The Allman Brothers Band, the Tedeschi Trucks Band also plays with a duo of drummers. This unconventional set-up allows for deeply complex and abstract percussion sections while never losing focus of perpetual and seemingly endless grooves.

In 2012, the band won a Grammy for the Best Blues Album with its debut, “Revelator.� It was an immediate success and gained the band the attention of oldschool and new-school fans alike.

No matter your favorite style or genre of music, the Tedeschi Trucks Band has a thing or two up its sleeve to impress even the most stubborn listener.

Brunch Club: OliBea brings Old City new tricks

There was no way to refuse; why would I want to? Old City’s new breakfast place is perfect.

I was standing outside waiting for my Daily Beacon colleagues, Lustig and Katrina, to arrive. With my hands tucked into my pockets and my curious gaze scanning the sidewalk, I greeted Jeffrey as he exited OliBea. Or, rather, he loudly cried “a bear of a man!?”

It’s true. Jeffrey is a large man, almost grizzly-size. I likened him to a bear in the Eyes on Knoxville story I wrote about OliBea last week. As he walked past me, he chuckled.

Apparently, his children call him “Papa Bear.” I giggled and stared back toward the sidewalk, wondering when my pals would arrive.

We stood in line because we are patient women, chatting with great anticipation as the line eased toward Stephanie at the cash register.

I debated my breakfast choice greatly: should I go with a Mexican twist or stick with a traditional breakfast option? By the time I reached the counter, my vegetarian tendencies were out the window and I ordered a ham and cheese torta and some coffee.

I filled the ‘I Love Lucy’ mug to the rim and found three open stools ready for the taking. The space is small; the place is popular. It felt like a miracle to find a spot.

We depleted the stock of neon pink

Post-It notes while we waited for our brunch. Lustig ’s illustrations depicted the three of us and a pie. Then, to Katrina’s delight, Lustig started to play hangman. Apparently, when Katrina was a child, her mother would suggest a game of hangman to pass the time.

Our food arrived before the game was over, and we were instantly distracted.

Katrina’s biscuits and gravy were like a warm hug from a friend you haven’t seen in a while – almost as if you forgot how much you like them. Lustig enjoys vegetables perhaps more than I do, so she ordered the stuffed squash. The acorn squash came halved and topped with quinoa, Brussels sprouts, spinach and a fried egg. Its flavors were bright and full of energy.

And then there was the ham and cheese torta—giant, almost foot-long, covered in pork, avocado, black beans, Monterey Jack cheese and a spicy blend of pickled vegetables. It took a knife, fork and patience to make my way through that monster of a sandwich.

But it was certainly worth it.

The s’more chocolate chip cookie sandwich was my next mission. After Jeffrey growled like a bear in greeting, he asked what I needed. With a smile, I requested the gooey, chocolatey goodness and was gifted it from Jeffrey ’s “ big, bear heart.”

The sticky marshmallow crème spread across our faces as we passed the sandwich between us. There was no way to properly cut the treat without ruining it, so we shared it bite by bite.

As our fingers grew stickier, I reveled in the joy of having friends who prefer discussing ideas more than gossip.

Lustig and Katrina know how to carry a conversation that moves with imagination. They ask the hard questions of “when was the last time you were embarrassed?” A moment goes by, then Lustig offers some insight into your response and you feel like you understand yourself again.

Please, do yourself a favor and go to OliBea. Treat yourself to the best breakfast Knoxville can give you.

Vols look to continue hot road start against Arkansas Troy Provost-Heron

He may be 14 years removed from his last trip to Bud Walton Arena, but the “Woo Pig Sooie” chants haven’t exited Donnie Tyndall’s mind.

On Tuesday, though, the first-year Tennessee head coach will make his return trip to Fayetteville, Arkansas, a venue he last visited on Feb. 17, 2001, as an assistant coach for the LSU Tigers, when the Volunteers face off against the Razorbacks.

And he expects the home crowd to be just as raucous as it was 14 years ago.

“When I was an assistant at LSU, we played there a couple of times over my four years,” Tyndall said. “(Bud Walton Arena) and Arizona, where we played a couple years ago, those two places, in my opinion, are the loudest two places I’ve ever played in, and I’m sure it will be another crazy atmosphere on Tuesday.”

Other than the hostile environment packed into the “Basketball Palace of Mid-America,” another challenge the Vols will face is trying to limit Bobby Portis for a second time this season.

In the two teams’ first matchup back on Jan. 13 — a 74-69 UT win — the 6-foot-11, 242-pound sophomore forward scored 17 points, with nine of those coming in the final 9:32 of the game, and corralled 11 rebounds.

To further limit one of the 25 players named to the mid-season Wooden Award watch list, the Vols will have to do a better job keeping Portis off the offensive glass after he grabbed five such rebounds in his first go-around with Tennessee.

“He averages right around five offensive rebounds a game in conference play, which is probably the most amazing stat of anyone in our league,” Tyndall said.

“But our zone limits post guys touches to a point, so the biggest thing will be working the front of the post and limiting his touches.

“When he catches, we will double him and make him kick it out. But the most important thing of all is boxing him out and not letting him get offensive putbacks.”

Coming off a 67-61 loss to Texas

A&M, the Vols will return to a classification which has suited them in past weeks: the road team.

In three road games to kick off the SEC season, Tennessee has yet to drop a contest, and hasn’t lost on the road since Dec. 17 when the team fell to North Carolina State 83-72.

“I’d like to think we are confident because we have won some games on the road,” Tyndall said. “We’ve played a little more nervous in front of our home crowd than we have on the road, and I don’t know if that is purely coincidental or if guys are feeling a little more pressure at home because all the fans are here and they want to do so well to keep them coming out and they put too much pressure on themselves.

“In really only one of the last three games have we really played the way we’ve went on the road and played, so I hope that trend continues — at least up until Tuesday night.”

Tipoff for the contest between the Vols and Arkansas is scheduled for 9:00 p.m. EST.

Williams continues family tradition on the tennis court

There was never any doubt which school Caitlyn Williams would choose.

When the senior tennis player was in high school at Alpha Omega Academy in Knoxville, she was listed as a five-star, blue-chip recruit, according to TennisRecruiting.net. She was named the Southern Girl Player of the Year in 2005, 2007 and 2009 and was the 19th ranked player in the country. Wherever Williams decided to attend school, expectations were going to follow her. At Tennessee, however, she had family history.

When it came time for Williams to make a decision, she said it was an easy choice. Williams’ mother, brother and uncle played tennis for Tennessee. Her grandfather, Mike DePalmer, was the head coach for the men’s tennis team from 1981-1984.

Watching her brother, Rhyne, play for the men’s team and seeing his enjoyment helped Williams with her decision. Being from Knoxville didn’t hurt either.

“Growing up 15 minutes down the road, living here in Knoxville,” Williams said, “I’ve always been a Volunteer.”

Family tradition also lead Williams to Tennessee.

“A lot of family ties, my grandfather was a coach here, my mom and my uncle also played here,” Williams said, “I definitely wanted to keep the tradition going and stay in-state.”

As a senior, Williams has been through a lot. She has struggled with injuries and has been limited at times. However,

she has battled back and helped the Vols win matches. Her proudest moment, she says, came during her freshman year when she clinched a 4-3 match against South Carolina.

“It was a really tight match,” Williams said, “it was pretty cool to get that win for the team.”

Right now Williams is only playing doubles, but co-head coach Mike Patrick hopes that will change.

“We’re hoping she can keep herself healthy and being able to contribute,” Patrick said.

After Williams graduates from Tennessee she hopes to turn pro. After that, she isn’t certain what she wants to do. For now, she is just thinking about tennis.

“Turning pro would be ideal,” Williams said. “My brother plays professionally right now and I would like to join him.”

When the rackets are put away and she isn’t on the tennis court, Williams enjoys fishing. It’s a love, like tennis, she shares with her brother. During Christmas break she joined him on a fishing trip.

“I went down to Florida to visit my brother and we went fishing,” Williams said. “We like to do that together.”

Also, Williams said she enjoys cooking. Her favorite things to cook are Italian foods, like pasta and spaghetti.

Williams’ mother and uncle were All-Americans at Tennessee, her brother played for the Vols, and her grandfather coached the Vols. Now, as a senior, her time at Tennessee is almost up. Caitlyn Williams has carried herself well throughout her career here at UT and while carrying on the family tradition.

High-school experience leads to job in Tennessee recruiting

With National Signing Day fast approaching, Tennessee is on the verge of securing its second consecutive top-ten recruiting class for the first time since 2010.

While many fans laud Butch Jones and his coaching staff for convincing top high school players to play football for the Volunteers in the midst of the roughest stretch of football in their history, most fans are unaware of the efforts of the individuals who work behind the scenes in recruiting.

One such individual is Tennessee senior Trey Johnson.

Johnson, who lists his position on the professional website LinkedIn as a student worker for recruiting operations, assists in the organization of official and unofficial visits for recruits and helps with summer camps.

The Chattanooga native’s path towards a student position in recruiting began with his childhood fandom.

“I was a big time Vol fan,” Johnson said. “My granddad was a walk-on here back in the day, he only played about two years. His rooming arrangement was actually in Neyland Stadium.

So, ever since I was a little kid, I have been coming to football games.

“I have always been a big Vol fan, so my dream was always to get into sports.”

Football was also an important part of Johnson’s childhood.

Johnson began playing the sport when he was in the sixth grade and continued to play throughout high school at the linebacker position, only missing his junior season due to an injury.

However, it was when he was sitting out due to the aforementioned injury that he became interested in the behind-the-scenes operations in football.

“Just seeing how my coach did logistics and he kind of taught me how he meets other coaches for film,” Johnson said. “Our athletic director was the defensive coordinator and I was really, really good friends with him. He told me how he gets buses, and meal times, and everything like that.”
