From her first moment on campus, Annie knew that she had found the university for her. “I instantly felt that this is the right fit for me,” she says. “A warm, friendly and encouraging community is what I felt and have loved ever since.” Annie has contributed to the community through her involvement on the U of T Scarborough (UTSC) Campus Council, Student Mental Health Advisory, tri-campus governing council, Armenian Students’ Association and the Biology Students’ Association. She has also worked in 7 departments at U of T Scarborough and the St. George campus such as the School of Continuing Studies, UTSC Development and Alumni Relations, and UTSC Admissions and Student Recruitment. In recognition of her contributions, Annie was selected to bring greetings to the graduating class and represent U of T Scarborough as an ambassador at the 2020 convocation, an online celebration held during the COVID-19 pandemic. “ It was an honour and a privilege to be asked to represent U of T Scarborough. My U of T experience has made me who I am today.”

JUST SOME OF THE INNOVATIONS AT U OF T SCARBOROUGH 30 companies formed in 2018–2019 at The Hub, U of T Scarborough’s incubator for student entrepreneurs. U of T Scarborough’s Department of Psychology developed Canada’s first undergraduate program in Mental Health Studies. An Anthropology professor from U of T Scarborough participated on a research team that discovered that ostrich eggshell beads traded more than 30,000 years ago offer the earliest proof of social networking among humans. The BRIDGE, a collaboration between the Department of Management and the U of T Scarborough Library, is a best-in-class business research centre where students access and analyze real-time data, market intelligence, industry research and company profiles. Researchers at U of T Scarborough have developed a method for turning waste cooking oil from restaurant deep fryers into high-resolution, biodegradable resin for 3D printing.
SRISUDHAKAR NOWDURI
Human Biology & Biochemistry Scarborough, Ontario The Undergraduate Research Poster Forum gives students the opportunity to present their research addressing issues of local, national and global importance. Srisudhakar placed second in 2020 with his poster on the effects of surface stiffness and hydrophilicity (wetness level) on bacteria adhesion. As a member of HOSA at U of T Scarborough (an organization for future health-care professionals), Srisudhakar also showcased his academic and research experience as a competitor in the Biomedical Debate. After winning multiple medals in national and international competitions, he trained other students participating in the event. Srisudhakar was also a reviewer on the Journal of Natural Sciences, established at U of T Scarborough in 2018. “ Taking part in research has given me a greater appreciation of the science principles I read about in textbooks. Experiencing the cycles of failed experiments and repeated trials before a breakthrough gave me a glimpse of the amount of effort that goes into expanding our understanding of the world through science.”

U of T Scarborough is nestled in 300 acres of the Highland Creek Valley, a gorgeous parkland that is one of Toronto’s most vibrant green spaces. It’s an inspiring environment to study in, and a great community to call home. RESIDENCE Your home away from home on campus is less than a five-minute walk from academic buildings. All residences at U of T Scarborough are furnished, have well-equipped kitchens, optional meal plans, and 68% feature single bedrooms. In addition to being a safe, comfortable place to stay, residence offers students the chance to develop their independence while discovering and being part of an active, close-knit community. The various learning experiences in residence help students transition to independence in a vibrant on-campus community that supports academic and personal development through a variety of activities, support and services. Human Biology Atikokan, Ontario For students studying away from home, building a community on campus makes for a full university experience. Living in on-campus student housing helps students move out of their comfort zones and meet new people. Adam enjoyed living on campus so much, he joined the Residence Life Team in his second year to promote a safe and supportive space for students to study and live in. He shares, “The best part about living on campus is the incredible community. Students from all over the world are able to share their culture and life experiences with one another. It makes for a diverse, welcoming and awesome place to be.” Living independently may sometimes feel overwhelming but there is always an aspect that will make you feel at home. For Adam, it was the close proximity to nature. “ Growing up in Northwestern Ontario, I was always outside. Getting outdoors has always been my way of recharging my batteries. Seeing a deer run across campus or spending some time in the valley helps me slow down and relax after a week of studying.”

Strategic Management (Co-op) Calgary, Alberta Esther knows firsthand that getting involved in clubs and extracurricular activities is one of the best ways to meet new people, find support and grow your network. U of T Scarborough has numerous student clubs, as well as the opportunity to create new ones. Esther wanted to build a community of Black students in Management programs so she founded the Black Students in Business Club. The group’s leadership team launched various initiatives such as the inaugural LEAD Conference, an event for Black high school students to connect with current Black students in Management programs at U of T Scarborough. “ As the founder of the Black Students in Business Club, my team and I were able to create a community to support Black students pursuing business. Our mandate is to empower, enrich and enlighten students in their pursuit of a business degree through the different internal and external events that we hold throughout the school year.”

Molecular Biology & Biotechnology (Co-op) Jamshedpur, India Abhimanyu came from a small town in India to pursue his passion for science and technology. “U of T Scarborough has the perfect mixture of urbanization and nature which is the kind of place I always wanted to study in. I enjoy Toronto’s awesome nightlife, but also love that when I need to take a break on campus, I can walk down to the valley to skip stones and refresh my mind.” The warm and welcoming community at U of T Scarborough also helped Abhimanyu feel at home in Canada. “The International Student Centre organized check-in meetings and supported me through my transition here to Canada.” Abhimanyu’s involvement in student life has also helped him to flourish. “ I have been a part of TEDxUTSC for the past two years and conducting conferences has taught me a lot about communication and networking. I was also the co-vice president of the Hindu Students’ Council and the Director of International Students on the Scarborough Campus Students’ Union.”

Management & Marketing (Co-op) Vancouver, British Columbia Studying in Scarborough means students experience new cultures by being part of Canada’s most diverse city. Janie loves visiting local destinations, such as restaurants, events, and scenic spots, and enjoys sharing her favourite finds on her food Instagram account. She says the best thing about being in a new environment is learning how to adapt and be comfortable with your surroundings. As Janie made new friends on campus, she learned about and fell in love with the different cultures represented and celebrated at U of T Scarborough.
“ Coming from Vancouver to study across the country was a big step for me. I chose Toronto, and U of T Scarborough in particular, because I wanted to step outside of my comfort zone and become more independent.”

Being active is integral to Esma’s overall health and success at U of T Scarborough. She plays intramural soccer, flag football and field hockey. During the 2019–2020 season, her flag football team advanced to semi-finals, while her soccer and field hockey teams won championships. Esma is also an assistant coach of a fitness kickboxing class offered at the Toronto Pan Am Sports Centre (TPASC) and a member of MoveU, a tri-campus initiative that promotes active lifestyles. “ Sports play a huge role in my student life and give me self-esteem, confidence and a sense of belonging. My work-study positions within the Department of Athletics & Recreation have also given me the opportunity to interact and meet many other students and staff at U of T Scarborough. In addition, as a female fitness ambassador, I regularly helped women achieve their strength and fitness goals to help develop a community that is strong and resilient.”

CO-OP PROGRAMS In today’s competitive global employment landscape, every little bit counts. The U of T Scarborough co-op program is designed to give our students every advantage and prepare them for life after their undergraduate degree. Through partnerships with world-class and industry-leading employers, co-op programming helps students put classroom theory into practice and gain invaluable work experience. By the time they graduate, students who have completed a co-op program will have acquired 8 to 20 months of full-time, paid on-the-job experience in addition to a degree from the top university in Canada. Earn your degree while gaining relevant paid employment experience in the working world. You will develop the skills, knowledge and expertise necessary to secure rewarding positions after graduation or go on to graduate school and professional programs.

Management & Accounting (Co-op) Pickering, Ontario Rachel chose U of T Scarborough because of the university’s global recognition, co-op program, and connections to industry. “I love the resources that U of T offers, particularly the great alumni networks that connect student with exclusive experiences.” Rachel completed work terms at KPMG, one of the largest accounting firms in the world. Her responsibilities included auditing international consumer packaged goods and European automobile companies. In addition to applying the knowledge gained through her studies, Rachel’s co-op work terms instilled business etiquette and practical skills.

JOSHUA ATIENZA
Biochemistry & Molecular Biology (Co-op) Toronto, Ontario During Joshua’s co-op work terms in Toronto and Montreal, he collaborated and learned from scientists who are leaders in their fields. During his first co-op work term, he studied rare genetic bone diseases at CHU Sainte-Justine pediatric hospital in Montreal. Joshua’s other work terms were completed at the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, where he focused on inborn errors of metabolism. During his final year of studies, Joshua became a co-op peer coach to help guide new co-op students through the job search process and pursue their own rewarding experiences.
“ Co-op showed me the importance of a good mentor. My research team and supervisors have taught me a lot about what it means to be a good scientist. They helped me grow beyond my comfort zone, and have challenged me to strive to be the best version of myself.”

CERTIFICATE IN BIOARCHAEOLOGY Skeletal remains can help us reconstruct past ways of life, in particular patterns of subsistence, diet, disease, demography and physical activity. Students enrolled in this certificate program receive concentrated training in Bioarchaeology, the subdiscipline of Archaeology that focusses on the study of biological materials from archaeological sites, with a particular emphasis on skeletal remains (both human and non-human).

Sylvie had a passion for both arts and business, so she decided that Arts Management would be the perfect program for her. She loves the opportunities for experiential learning and independent research both inside and outside of the classroom. “I like the small class sizes and the chance to develop strong working relationships with professors. The Arts Management program provides a good balance of theoretical and practical courses, which helps students to either go straight into the field, or pursue graduate studies.” Sylvie combined her love of arts, community and leadership as the Director of Community Relations & Development and Festival Lead for ARTSIDEOUT. The festival transforms U of T Scarborough with site-specific installations, exhibitions, performances and film screenings. “ Being part of ARTSIDEOUT has been one of the highlights of my university experience. I was able to put the concepts and theories I learned in class into practice—from planning and implementing the festival’s first-ever high school outreach tour and executive leadership retreat, to eventually leading the organization’s largest festival yet!”

BHANVI SACHDEVA Neuroscience Calgary, Alberta
Bhanvi decided to study Neuroscience and minor in Psychology to better understand the functionality and complexity of the brain. U of T Scarborough has been the perfect setting for Bhanvi’s wide range of interests. She is an executive member for Math in Motion, an organization that plans an event for grade 9 girls to explore mathematics and its many applications. Bhanvi also became a Science and Technology writer for The Varsity, a U of T tri-campus newspaper. She is considering going to medical school to pursue neurosurgery and hopes to continue publishing her poetry along the way. “ I am fascinated by how my program is interconnected with various disciplines, like the relationship between neuroscience and psychology with other streams such as computer science or business.”

Computer Science (Co-op) Richmond Hill, Ontario Edgar chose to study computer science because he wants to use technology to make a difference in the world. Edgar has a lot of respect for all of his professors: “We’re really lucky to have professors who are passionate not only about their area of study but also about pedagogy. I really appreciate when professors go the extra mile to ensure that our learning experience is pleasant and challenging.” U of T Scarborough annually hosts Hack the Valley, the second largest hackathon in Canada. “ I can’t stress enough how cool it is to see so much innovation and positivity come out of a student-run event. I highly recommend participating in a hackathon at least once. Even if you don’t complete a project during the event, you meet a lot of cool people with similar interests, and get inspired by all the speakers and special guests.”

Biochemistry (Co-op) & Mental Health Studies Scarborough, Ontario Nayaab became interested in the sciences at a young age and when it came time for university, she wanted a co-op experience in biology and chemistry and chose the Biochemistry Co-op program at U of T Scarborough. After discovering new interests during first year, she decided to pursue a double major, along with a French minor to further develop her French skills. Nayaab encourages students to take advantage of resources and opportunities available outside the classroom. “ I am glad I got the chance to supplement my education with additional experiences. This includes attending networking and skills workshops by the Academic Advising & Career Centre, utilizing the 3D printers at the UTSC Library Makerspace, and taking part in school clubs and Departmental Student Associations. I also participated in the UTSC Undergraduate Research Poster Forum which gave me the chance to highlight my undergraduate research experience and enhance my scientific communication as I prepared an abstract poster and presentation.�

Psychology Scarborough, Ontario Michael chose to pursue undergraduate studies after the completion of a college diploma. “At U of T Scarborough, you are offered a very academically diverse experience. I chose to major in Psychology and minor in Anthropology because I enjoy sciences of exploration.” He appreciates how involved his studies are in a broad range of subjects. “I get to study principle subjects like neuroscience, but also can explore more ornate or abstract subjects like the study of emotion or music cognition.” Michael is also pursuing a minor in English Literature, a high area of interest as the author of two children’s books. “The atmosphere at U of T Scarborough is not like any other universities I have visited. The environment is welcoming and will be exactly what you make of it.” Michael also pursued studies away from the U of T Scarborough campus as an exchange student in Italy. “ It was an invaluable experience academically and in every other way possible. I encourage everyone with the opportunity and desire to study abroad to definitely do so!”

TRANSFER STUDENTS FROM OTHER POST-SECONDARY INSTITUTIONS University Applicants with good academic standing in previous studies will be considered for admission. To be eligible for a U of T degree, you must complete at least half of your degree studies at U of T. Review the Application To-Do List The Application To-Do List will list which documents you are required to submit for admission consideration, key deadline dates, how admissions decisions are made and much more. 2. Prepare to Study at U of T Scarborough There are many things you can do to prepare to study at U of T Scarborough. They may not all apply to you so be sure you read things carefully.

1. As a planning tool, UTAPS will give early information about the amount of government aid and possible U of T grant assistance you can expect. This allows you to start your financial planning early. 2. As an application form, UTAPS is used for many of our scholarships and special grant programs for Canadian citizens or permanent residents. 3. As a grant program, UTAPS may provide additional funding to OSAP recipients after classes begin in September. Out-of-province and Indigenous students must apply for the UTAPS grant, available online. U of T Scarborough Grant/Bursary Program Grant/Bursary applications are available for full-time students three times a year: in the Fall, Winter and Summer semesters. The application is available through eService after classes start in September. Deadlines are available on the Registrar’s Office website. utsc.utoronto.ca/registrar/ Work Study Program A wide variety of career-related part-time jobs are available at U of T. Students can begin to apply for positions starting in late August. Successful applicants are allowed to work up to 15 hours a week. GOVERNMENT LOANS & GRANTS Ontario Residents The Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is a government-funded financial aid program that offers loans and grants for Ontario residents. Other Canadian Provinces & Territories Students residing in other Canadian provinces or territories can apply for student loans from their provincial (or territorial) governments. Indigenous Students Eligible students planning on enrolling in university studies may qualify for financial support through their band or other government-sponsored programs. ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIPS — APPLICATION NOT REQUIRED President’s Scholars of Excellence Program (PSEP) — $10,000 Awarded to approximately 50 of the most highly qualified students across the University of Toronto. In addition to the scholarship funds, students receive access to meaningful on-campus employment and an international learning opportunity. The PSEP award may not be held in conjunction with a U of T Scarborough entrance scholarship, though students with an average of 95%+ may qualify for the U of T Scarborough Entrance Scholarship renewability portion in years 2, 3 and 4. U of T Scholars — $7,500 Awarded to the top students admitted to U of T Scarborough. Typically, students will have an average in the mid–90s.
