The Department of Music

We cultivate artists. The University of Texas at San Antonio is in the business of training excellent performers, educators, composers, and entrepreneurs. The Department of Music serves more than 300 students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees. These musicians are hungry to make their mark in the arts and are comitted to social good. One of nine departments in the College of Liberal and Fine Arts, we develop students’ marketable skills and creative minds through experiential learning opportunities.

While many music programs reserve their most valuable leadership opportunities for their graduate students, we are sharply focused on enhancing the undergraduate experience. Both undergraduate and graduate students alike hold key leadership positions in the department’s major events, community engagement programs, and on our marketing and publicity team. Our student-artists conduct rehearsals for San Antonio youth in our notable UTSA String Project. They serve as teaching artitsts in our nationally recognized touring program Opera on the Run. They market, plan, and fully produce UTSA Underground, an annual showcase that features the visual and musical compositions of both students and professional artists. These are just a few examples of the incredible work in which our students are involved while earning their degree. Beyond leadership opportunities, students often take the stage alongside faculty and guest artists through annual festivals and performances. Students also benefit from community partnerships that explore music’s impact on society, technology, and health. Whether driven by an innate creative spirit, a commitment to affecting positive change, or fulfilling a musical calling, our students are making music in significant ways.

Kyree Harrison (bass-baritone), transfer student Bachelor of Music Education “I love Music Theory. Theory is how I understand, learn, and process music. I am currently studying improvisation, specifically how non-classical musicians can use improv to play classical music. I plan to submit this research for the Texas Music Educators Association convention in 2022.” Kyree is a vocalist, cellist, and pianist, and works alongside Dr. Jennifer Beavers to conduct research for conference presentations. According to Kyree, a major benefit for undergraduates who study at UTSA is the chance to learn the correct research process.

We offer unique areas of study. In addition to traditional areas of focus such as performance and education, our department trains composers, marketers, and researchers.

Hannah Bradley (violin) Bachelor of Music Composition “I chose UTSA for the composition program. My most memorable experience to date has been participating in UTSA’s Defining Moments Interdisciplinary Project. I was able to collaborate with students and professors during the pandemic and it was amazing to be a part of the project.” Hannah’s composition will be featured in COLFA’s Fall 2021 Showcase. Our faculty artists lead by example. Students accepted into our department work with faculty throughout their degree. Our student-artists are not taught by graduate students. Our professors are artists who have the additional talents and skills required to train student musicians. Faculty members are actively producing art in their respective fields and contributing to the music landscape through published books and journal articles, presentations at major conferences, research, and much more.

Where you study matters. UTSA is a multicultural discovery enterprise institution with more than 32,000 students.

UTSA is deeply rooted in the city of San Antonio. America’s 7th largest city and one if its fastest growing, San Antonio offers students access to ample job opportunities, distinctive cultural events, and an entertaining music and art scene. Matt Moreno (euphonium) Bachelor of Music Education After graduating from UTSA Music in Spring 2021, Matt immediately accepted an Assistant Band Director position at a top high school program in the greater San Antonio area. Thrilled to begin his teaching career, Matt thanked his professors, mentors, and colleagues at UTSA for showing him what it means to be a musician.

A hallmark of academic study at UTSA is our commitment to experiential learning, a means of study that challenges our students to learn by doing. Experiential learning puts our students in charge of their own destiny, engaging them in hands-on work in their areas of interest which develops their marketable skills and preps them for a career of their choosing.

The University of Texas at San Antonio

While most of our students perform and work in San Antonio during their studies, we encourage students to explore music far beyond the city’s borders through our study abroad program in Urbino, Italy. Known as the COLFA Study Abroad Program, this international program gives students a full semester in Italy where they see firsthand some of music’s most important sites, all while earning credits toward their degree.

Sean Corbett (soprano), COLFA Study Abroad participant Bachelor of Music Education “One awesome part about studying abroad is that you can remember things about history that you wouldn’t be able to from simply reading a textbook; you are immersed in history. You also grow as an artist while abroad because you work with great musicians and have many musical opportunities through the program.”

Making music together. Student-artists have many options at UTSA for participation in both principal and additional ensembles.

In addition to their primary ensemble, most of our students play in additional ensembles. Some students explore secondary instrument study to further develop musicianship skills and increase career potential. Instrumentalists may perform in Concert Choir and other vocal ensembles, while singers can take part in instrumental ensembles such as jazz combo or SOSA Marching Band.

When I played with SOSA at my first football game, I never felt more energy from a group of people and it made me feel so much closer to the department and my university. We truly are a family.”

We know you’ll find your place here. Evan Feist Music Technology “The best projects I have worked on as a UTSA Music student have been MuTeFest III and MuTeFest IV. These festivals brought in musical artists, educators, and industry talent for workshops that spanned various backgrounds; there was a workshop for anyone who wanted to learn.” UTSA Music students play a big role in major events like MuTeFest, our annual music techonology festival. Fiest says that, “the challenge of creating a schedule, bringing in clinicians, getting sponsors, and staying in budget was very intense, but well worth it as these events turned out great and led to lots of knowledge being shared.” Evan is the president of MuTe (UTSA’s music technology club), a Lab Tech for the Multimedia lab, and is an Audio/Video Engineer for the Recital Hall.
