FROM THE CHAIR I am delighted to welcome you to the UTSA Lyric Theatre’s production of Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte! We are so proud to showcase the creative vision of director Dr. Jourdan Laine Howell, as well as the artists and crew who will be led by maestro Troy Peters in this performance. And we are especially excited to return to the UTSA Recital Hall for this first full opera production with orchestra in over two years.

Although this is the first large-scale production in a while, it is the pièce de résistance of two years of innovative and successful Lyric Theatre performances. In fact, the UTSA Lyric Theatre produced 11 productions in the past two years – even amidst restrictions on live performance – including rare works, Spanish works, works for women’s voices, a U.S. premiere, and five Texas premieres! This particular singspiel that you will hear today is delightful, and requires skilled singers who can navigate the lower and upper extremes of their vocal range. We are proud to have both graduate and undergraduate singers who can fill these roles, and this is part of a long tradition of remarkable singers in the UTSA Lyric Theatre program, many of whom have gone on to perform in the biggest opera houses in the U.S. and abroad.

While I am bursting with pride at the work of this cast, crew, and orchestra, I also want to express my deep gratitude to the faculty and staff who mentor and support these students in so many ways. Countless hours of extra work go into a production like this, and we could not do it without the efforts of the entire UTSA Department of Music. I hope that you truly enjoy meeting these outstanding students, and we thank you for your continued support!

SYNOPSIS ACT I

ACT II

Somewhere in a magical land, Prince Tamino flees a terrible snake before three ladies in the service of the Queen of the Night save him. After they have left, the bird catcher Papageno appears.

He explains that the Queen’s ladies give him food and drink in return for his birds. Then, he claims that it was he who killed the snake. Hearing Papageno take credit for their work, the ladies return and padlock Papageno’s mouth shut for lying. Turning to Tamino, they give the prince a portrait of the Queen’s daughter, Pamina, who they say is being held prisoner by the evil Sarastro. Tamino falls in love with Pamina’s portrait at first sight. The Queen appears. She grieves over the loss of her daughter and asks Tamino to rescue Pamina. The ladies offer Tamino a Magic Flute to ensure his safety on the journey, and to Papageno, who will accompany him, they give magic silver bells. Finally, the ladies summon three spirits to guide the men on their journey.

Within the castle, Sarastro tells his knights that Tamino will undergo initiation rites.

In Sarastro’s palace, the slave Monostatos steals Pamina and brings her to his chambers. He is frightened away when Papageno arrives. The bird catcher tells Pamina that Tamino loves her and is on his way to save her.

Tamino comes across three doors while on his way to Sarastro’s castle. He attempts to enter but is stopped by a Temple Speaker who informs him that Sarastro may not be as bad as the Queen says. Tamino calls on the Magic Flute to help him find Pamina.

Monostatos and his Underlings chase Papageno and Pamina, but the sound of Papageno’s magic bells force them to flee in a jig. Sarastro enters and punishes Monostatos. Pamina and Tamino are enchanted with each other, but they are separated so that Tamino and Papageno can begin an initiation into the knighthood.

Papageno and Tamino begin the Trial of Silence.

The three ladies appear and attempt to bait the men into breaking their vow of silence.

Inside the castle, Monostatos tries to kiss the sleeping Pamina but hides when the Queen of the Night arrives. She gives her daughter a dagger and orders her to murder Sarastro. Monostatos offers to help Pamina if she will give herself to him. She rejects him and he attempts to kill her.

Sarastro intervenes.

In the midst of the Trial of Silence, Papageno declares his need for water. An old woman appears to quench his thirst and he proceeds to speak to her, once again breaking his vow.

Tamino remains steadfast, even to the point of breaking Pamina’s heart—she cannot understand his silence.

The knights inform Tamino that he has only two more trials to complete his initiation. Papageno, who has broken his oath, is eliminated from the trials. Pleading for a wife, he eventually settles for the old lady. When he promises to be faithful to her, she turns into a young maiden named Papagena but immediately disappears.

Back in the castle, Pamina despairs over Tamino’s rejection and contemplates suicide. The three spirits intervene to save her.

As Tamino prepares for the final two trials, Pamina runs in. Protected by the powers of the Magic Flute, they face the Trial of Fire and the Trial of Water together.

SYNOPSIS ACT II

The Queen of the Night, her three ladies, and Monostatos prepare to attack Sarastro in his castle but they are defeated. All celebrate their victory and praise courage, virtue, and wisdom.

Background Information Die Zauberflöte, also known as The Magic Flute, premiered on September 30th, 1791 in Vienna Austria. The show was an immediate hit and continues to be one of the top ten most performed operas every year. This was Mozart's penultimate opera and is considered one of his most loved, along with The Marriage of Figaro, Così fan tutte, and Don Giovanni.

The opera's librettist Emanuel Schikaneder was interested in free masonry and stage machinery.

The number three is important to the masons, hence the repeated nod to that number throughout the show: Three Ladies, Three Spirits, the Three Great Trials. In the original production, and in many iterations, the Three Spirits often fly in on a floating cloud or craft, hovering over the stage to keep watch. This use of machinery was attributed to Schikaneder and is one component of many that makes this opera so fun!

Papageno, utterly distraught over his lack of a wife, resolves to hang himself. The spirits arrive just in time and remind him that if he uses his magic bells, he will find true happiness. When he plays the bells, Papagena appears, and the two happily imagine all the little papagenos and papagenas they will have together.

CONDUCTOR rock musicians, he created YOSA’s Classic Albums Live series, winner of a 2016 Centropolitan Award from Centro San Antonio and a 2016 Best of the City Award from San Antonio Magazine.

Troy Peters Hailed by the San Antonio Current as “consistently brilliant and impossibly cool,” conductor Troy Peters is Director of the UTSA Orchestra at the University of Texas San Antonio and Music Director of YOSA (Youth Orchestras of San Antonio). In 2016, Musical America featured him in their special issue, The MA30 Professionals of the Year: The Innovators. Peters has guest conducted many orchestras, including the Oregon Symphony, San Antonio Symphony, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and Round Rock Symphony.

He was previously Music Director of the Vermont Youth Orchestra and Montpelier Chamber Orchestra, and conducted college orchestras at Texas State University and Middlebury College.

He has also gained international attention for his orchestral collaborations with rock musicians, including Blind Pilot, Jon Anderson (of the band Yes), and Trey Anastasio (of the band Phish), with whom he recorded two albums on Elektra Records. Working with dozens of San Antonio

Peters conducted the world premiere recording of Daron Hagen’s Masquerade with violinist Jaime Laredo, cellist Sharon Robinson, and the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, on Bridge Records. Among the other soloists with whom he has collaborated are Branford Marsalis, Midori, Edgar Meyer, Time for Three, and Richard Stoltzman. His work has been the subject of national media attention from CBS Sunday Morning, National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition, Symphony, and The New Yorker. Awarded a Vermont Arts Council Citation of Merit in 2009, he has also been honored with eight ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Music and has conducted more than three-dozen world premieres. A popular lecturer, he has presented pre-concert talks for the Philadelphia Orchestra, Carnegie Hall, Vermont Symphony Orchestra, and San Antonio Symphony, as well as acclaimed talks at TEDx San Antonio, Pecha Kucha San Antonio, and Texas Public Radio’s Worth Repeating.

Peters is also active as a composer, where his honors include the Charles Ives Scholarship from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and grants from Meet the Composer and the Rockefeller Foundation. He holds degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music and the University of Pennsylvania, where his primary compositional mentors were Ned Rorem and George Crumb.

Born in 1969 in Greenock, Scotland (of American parents), Peters grew up in Tacoma, Washington, and lives in San Antonio with his wife and two children.

DIRECTOR In addition to her concert and opera performances in the US and abroad, Jourdan Laine has directed Goyescas (Granados), A Picnic Cantata (Bowles), Review (Beck), The Worst One Ever (Belshaw), and numerous scenes programs. This past fall, she directed Singular Moments: An Evening of Monodramas which included the U.S. premiere of Aunt Helen (Pearce) and five Texas premieres.

Soprano Jourdan Laine Howell is an active soloist who recently premiered of Douglas Hedwig's Rowing in Eden: Three Dickinson Songs, written for her voice, alongside pianist Tracy Cowden.

She performed selections from Kirsten Broberg's The Waters of Time at the 2019 New Music Festival (San Antonio, TX), Finzi's In terra pax with the Symphony of the Hills, and premiered works

by Douglas Hedwig and Joshua Lubben at the Frontwave New Music Festival in Palm Beach, Florida.

She has performed numerous lead roles including Susanna in The Marriage of Figaro, Despina in Cosi fan tutte, and Elvira in Don Giovanni. She has performed with Greensboro Opera, Amarillo Opera, San Antonio Opera, and Palm Beach Opera, and has been a guest soloist for Mendelssohn's Elijah, Handel's Messiah, Haydn's Creation, and Vivaldi's Gloria.

Jourdan Laine is a professor at UTSA in Lyric Theatre and voice.

This is her first large scale production and she dedicates the efforts and results to her dad who thoroughly enjoyed Mozart operas.

Jourdan Laine Howell

Jourdan Laine served as an invited panelist at the Opera America conference in Montreal, Canada and has presented at the National Opera Conference (Cleveland, 2020), Southeastern Theatre Conference (Mobile, 2018) and has delivered masterclasses and lectures in Florida, Texas, and Tennessee. Prior to her collegiate appointments, she developed and directed Palm Beach Opera's Studio program, a rigorous seven month training program for select high school voices, and the third tier of the company's celebrated artist training system. Her innovative work in the area of Community Education and Engagement earned her a nomination for one of the most creative arts administrators in the country (ArtsHacker, 2016).

Rachel Woolf The Magic Flute Assistant Professor of Instruction, UTSA Flute and Flute Ensemble

Rachel previously taught flute and chamber music at Brookhaven College and extensively across the DFW metroplex. She has given masterclasses and clinics at University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Oregon, SUNY Potsdam, Lamar University, Baylor University, Oklahoma State University, Texas Lutheran University, Grand View

Under her leadership, the UTSA Flute Ensemble has been invited to perform twice at the National Flute Association (NFA) Convention as well as at the Texas Flute Society and San Diego Flute Guild’s Spring Festival. In 2021, Dr. Woolf commissioned four compositions for the UTSA Flute Ensemble to perform at NFA, three by UTSA alumni composers.

She has been a Guest Artist Teacher at Texas A & M Commerce and has given clinics at the Texas Summer Flute Symposium, Austin Flute Society’s Festival, and Floot Fire camps. She has also been on judging panels for the Texas Music Education’s Association (TMEA) All-State Convention, Myrna Brown Competition (Texas Flute Society), and VOCE Competition (San Diego), among others.

Rachel is a member of Dallas based symphonic pop rock band, The Polyphonic Spree, and has toured with them all over North America, has performed with Swedish-Argentinian indie folk singer José González, Iranian pop legend Aref, multi-platinum operatic-pop superstars Il Divo, GLEE star and Emmy-winning Darren Criss, and has recorded with Grammy-winning producer John Congleton on experimental rock band Swans record, The Glowing Man (2016). Not one to be boxed in by notes on a page, she has sought out an array of opportunities to improvise—from freeform to jazz to Indian ragas. Notably, she was selected to perform traditional Hindustani North Indian flute during the Dalai Llama’s visit to Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Accomplished as a soloist and chamber musician, she has performed at the NFA Convention five times. Additionally, her performances with The Fawn Trio earned a spot in the semifinals at the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and special recognition at the Plowman Chamber Music Competition. She has performed with the San Antonio Symphony, Dallas Winds, East Texas Symphony Orchestra, Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra, among others, and spent two summers performing at the Brevard Music Center. She has performed under the baton of such luminaries as JoAnn Falletta, Keith Lockhart, Leonard Slatkin, Peter Oundjian, Michael Tilson Thomas, Jeff Tyzik, Marin Alsop, and Mattias Barnert.

An avid champion of contemporary music, Rachel has been a founding member of multiple new music groups in Ann Arbor and Los Angeles and has premiered numerous new works for flute and piccolo, including Paul Schoenfield’s Psychobird (A Sonatina for Piccolo and Piano). She can be heard premiering works by William Bolcom and Jennifer Higdon on the widely released Classical Structures with the University of Michigan Symphony Band on Equilibrium Records. She can also be heard playing principal and bass flute on the GIA Windworks label, Canvases and Offerings, with the UNT Wind Symphony.

Beyond her performances across the United States, she has performed in Sweden, Finland, Russia, Italy, Luxembourg, Germany, France, and England.

She received her Bachelor of Music at the University of Michigan, obtained her Master of Music at Bowling Green State University, where she was the flute Teaching Assistant, and completed her Doctor of Musical Arts at the University of North Texas as a Teaching Fellow with a related field in Ethnomusicology. She has studied under the tutelage of Amy Porter, Dr. Conor Nelson, Terri Sundberg, Dr. James Scott, Marianne Gedigian, and Karen Reynolds.

DESIGNERS Michelle Pietri received her Bachelor degree from the University of New Orleans and her Master of Fine Arts from Tulane University. She has performed locally, nationally, and internationally and worked professionally as a director, choreographer and costume designer. Her work has been seen from California to the Czech Republic and Russia. In 2003 Michelle began working for the UTSA Lyric Theatre program as a Michelle Pietri Costume Designer

choreographer, costumer, and director. In San Antonio, Michelle has worked as a guest artist for Incarnate Word University, Trinity University, St Philips College, North West Vista College, The Playhouse San Antonio, the Sheldon Vexler theatre, Allegro Theatre company, Harlequin Dinner Theatre, SRO and Associates, and Fiesta Texas. Ms. Pietri has been awarded many awards of excellence for her choreography in the musical theatre field and in 2014 she and her husband, William McCrary, were recognized by the Alamo Theatre Arts Council with the Jasmina Wellinghoff Award for their contributions to San Antonio area theatre. In 2009 Michelle began teaching the first credited dance classes for the new dance program at UTSA. Michelle is one of the directors of UTSA’s Summer Performing Arts Camps and Workshops for grades 3 through 12.

Sofia Mejia is a freshman at UTSA studying business and marketing. She has been involved in theatre since the sixth grade. Her past works include makeup design for The Wizard of Oz and She Kills Monsters. This is her first production with UTSA Lyric Theatre. She would like to thank her friends and family for inspiring, supporting, and encouraging her to continue her pursuits in theatre.

DIEZAUBERFLÖTE

DESIGNERS Benjamin is a multi-award-winning sound designer who specializes in theatre and live productions. He is a recipient of multiple ATAC Globe Awards for Excellence in Sound Design, including Disney’s Mary Poppins, and two 42nd Annual Telly Awards in Sound and Editing for work at Space Center Houston. He has been an integral part of the Woodlawn Theatre, designing sound and projections for over 40 productions. Ben is a Ben Farrar Projection Designer

seasoned expert and his attention to detail shows in everything he does, whether he is creating sound or visual scapes for a show. Whether it's orchestras and bands, sound effects, or projections - he always strives to create the best experience for everyone.

Benjamin has a BA in Graphic Design and Media Arts from SNHU and is also an Adobe Certified Professional in Visual Design.

Chris Rutz (set painter) is amazingly thrilled to paint for the Magic Flute and work with another wonderful production at UTSA. He is the regular set painter for the Woodlawn Theatre, and has painted for various productions around San Antonio. Chris has also done commissioned portraits, and murals, along with shows of his own art work. He is constantly inspired by the talented live productions around San Antonio, and is blessed Chris Rutz Scenic Paint

to be so often surrounded by amazing music, talent and passion.

Zach Walsh holds a B.A. in Theatre Arts from the University of the Incarnate Word (May 2019). During his undergraduate studies, he served as the assistant technical director for Godspell, Constellations, and Much Ado About Nothing. After graduating, Zach worked as a carpenter for the Trollwood Performing Arts School's production of Freaky Friday in Moorhead, Minnesota, and helped build sets at the Woodlawn Theatre here in San Antonio, including Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and Hairspray. Zach served as the sound board operator for the Classic Theatre's (SA) production of As You Like It, and at the Magik Theatre (SA) for Maddi's Fridge, Snow White, Ella Enchanted, and The Snowy Day and Other Stories.

Zach works as an AV technician for various

corporate events and conventions at multiple venues downtown and around the city.
