THERE'S ALWAYS ROOM FOR A STORY THAT CAN TRANSPORT PEOPLE TO ANOTHER PLACE.

A little bit about each piece...

"Quel guardo il cavaliere..."

From Donizetti's Don Pasquale, this is Norina's entrance aria. She reads a fairytale about a knight named Ricardo who falls instantly in love with a beautiful maiden. Norina laughs at the absurdity of love at first sight and claims to know how to inspire love with a quick smile and a false tear. First performed in 1843.

"Adieu, notre petite table" From Massenet's Manon, this aria explores an important choice that Manon must make. Will she choose love or will she choose a life of grandeur? She struggles to say goodbye to her quaint life with her love des Grieux, referencing the humble and small table at which they made many memories. First performed in 1884.

Aunt Helen Monica Pearce's Aunt Helen depicts a radio interview with Canadian folklorist Dr. Mary Helen Creighton. She talks about her adventures collecting the folk songs of Nova Scotia and shares excerpts from three of the pieces she gathered. Composed in 2012.

No. 9 and No. 11 These two selections were extracted from a collection of Benjamin Britten's songs titled Who are these children? The twelve pieces in the collection explore the horrors of war; these two pieces focus on the affect of war on children. WARNING: the subject matter describes the death of children and may be difficult for some to hear. Composed in 1969.

"Steal me, sweet thief" From Menotti's radio opera The Old Maid and the Thief, this aria is sung by Laetitia about her love interest, Bob the thief. She expresses frustration about Bob's apparent timidity and confusion over why he has yet to make any advances toward her. Premiered in 1939.

Silver Wing Jocelyn Hagen's Silver Wing is a dramatic extended song that tells a story about love, loss, and the effects of war, specifically WWII (1939-1945). It is taken from the dance opera Test Pilot which was composed in 2014. The piece was inspired by Hagen's grandfather who received the Distinguished Flying Cross for his outstanding service in the Air Force.

No. 1, No. 5, and No. 9 Scott Ordway's Girl in the Snow explores one girls imagination in which she relives her first encounters with plants, animals, trees, rivers, the sea, and the sky. She ponders the great size of the whole world and wonders where she fits into it all. The three songs for this evening focus on a fox in the snow, an owl in a tree, and a rabbit in a burrow. Premiered in 2018.

Her glance pierced the knight's heart. He bent down on his knees and said, "I am your knight." And in that glance there was such taste of heaven that the knight, Riccardo, being conquered by love, swore he would not think of any other woman.

I also know the magic of a glance at the right time in the right place. I also know how hearts burn like fire because of a smile. I also know the effect of a furtive tear, of instant pleasure. I know a thousands ways love can deceive, the charms used to seduce a heart.

I have a peculiar mind and quick wit. I like to be playful. But if I do get angry, I can't stay calm. But I can just as quickly change anger into laughter. I have a peculiar mind, but an excellent heart.

"Adieu, notre petite table" I must go, for his sake. My poor knight! Oh, yes, I do love him, but I do hesitate today to leave. No. No! I am no longer worthy of him! I hear his voice, the voice that captivates me against my will, "Manon, you will be queen, queen because of your beauty!" But I am nothing but weakness and fragility, and in spite of myself, I feel my tears begin to flow. My dreams...obliterated. Will the future have the same charm as the beautiful days of my past with him?

Goodbye, our little table where we met so often...our little table that meant so much to us. It is hard to imagine, so small a space could hold our love, our embrace. Goodbye, our little table. That glass was ours. We both drank from it. Here one set of lips searched for another...Ah! My poor friend, you loved me. Goodbye...our little table.
