UT-Rio Grande Valley presents:
Ouroboros
Re-Imagining Mexican Folk Dance
By Miguel Angel Peña CaballeroDance traditions provide us opportunities to connect, and through forming our cultures, evolve. These slow but constant transformations within our traditions create an ever-changing landscape in which artists embrace the tension between the past and the present. Ouroboros is a conversation with contemporary trends in Mexican folk dance today. Peña manifests this tension in the fusion of varied dance techniques such as Mexican folk, tap, flamenco, and modern dance. In this production, Peña cultivates and expresses the concept of contemporary transformation through rhythms and dance techniques which highlight the hybridity as a new wave of Mexican folk dance. Ouroboros signifies the linkages and continual renewal of the self. This production illuminates Peña’s path to honor his traditional practice while exploring new approaches envisioning the future of the form.
