There Are Fairies at the Bottom of Our Garden
Liza Lehmann (1862–1918)
Liza Lehmann was a British singer and composer who studied under the world-famous soprano, Jenny Lind. Born in London, her family split time between England, Germany, France, and Italy. As was typical for women of her era, Lehmann retired from singing at age 32 when she married It was during this so-called retirement that she began composing and teaching. In 1910, she returned to the stage and toured the United States, singing and playing her own music in recital.
A Horse with Wings
Ricky Ian Gordon (b. 1956)
One of the most prolific living American composers, Ricky Ian Gordon has dedicated much of his artistic output to opera and song. While he has a deep appreciation for American poets, and has set many of the very best, several of his songs are set to his own texts. Horse with Wings is one such piece. Gordon’s compositions inhabit a space between popular and classical styles, often infused with a strong sense of social consciousness.
Love Went A-Riding
Frank Bridge (1879–1941)
A composer, violist, violinist, teacher, and conductor, Frank Bridge was a musical staple in London in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His compositional style pivoted around 1920, a shift often attributed to the impact of World War I on the selfdescribed pacifist. Bridge’s pre-1920 music is generally light and lyrical, and most of his songs date from this period (Love Went A-Riding was written in 1916). His only composition student was a young Benjamin Britten; some described their relationship as that of an adopted father and son, a bond that was no doubt deeply meaningful to the childless Bridge.
