Division of Recreational Sports 2015–16

For 99 years, the Division of Recreational Sports has been a part of campus life and is recognized as one of the oldest and largest collegiate recreational sports programs in the country. What began as the Men’s Intramural Program expanded and evolved over decades to become one of the most popular programs on campus and an essential part of the Longhorn experience.

The Division’s reach extends to students, faculty, staff, alumni, parents, visitors and the general community who enjoy access to a comprehensive array of facilities, programs, services and special events. As testament to its popularity among students, 89 percent of the student population participates in RecSports and 97 percent say they would recommend RecSports to others.

Highlights • Recruited and hired a new assistant director for intramural sports.

CIVIC ENGAGEMENT PROGRAM The Division of Recreational Sports believes that University of Texas at Austin students are active participants in their learning and development, and their acquisition of knowledge is fostered through a combination of study, reflection, dialogue, and action. The Civic Engagement Program creates opportunities for students to serve their community and support the mission of the Division of Student Affairs and the core values of The University.

Learning, discovery, freedom, leadership, individual opportunity, and responsibility are best learned when academic achievement is combined with hands-on experience. Our service projects are designed to bring awareness and give voice to social concerns that positively impact the community, educate students and provoke action beyond graduation.

Environmental Conservation

For the Children

The Environmental Conservation program focuses on local and regional environmental degradation issues. This year volunteers worked with the Austin Parks Foundation, San Marcos River Foundation, and Texas Parks and Wildlife to remove invasive plant species to preserve our natural heritage. Additional environmental service projects included tree planting, and two new initiatives including a sustainable agriculture service project with Urban Roots, and wildlife re-habituation project with the Mission Wolf Program in south central Colorado.

Utilizing the resources of the Outdoor Recreation Program, the Civic Engagement Program continued to serve the Helping Hand Home for Children, the Settlement Home for Children, the Wonders and Worries program, the Austin Women’s Shelter and the Communities in Schools program to provide quality outdoor recreation experiences for children who are homeless and/ or victims of domestic violence in the Austin community.

The Longhorn Stream Team is a service-learning program that trains UTAustin students as citizen scientists armed with technical river skills who collect water quality data on Texas Rivers. Their four main pillars of purpose: science, service, environmental leadership and river readiness contribute to the experiential education and development of informed, empowered and engaged students. In its second year, the Longhorn Stream Team trained 9 new citizen scientists who paddled over 200 river miles and collected water quality data from 56 separate data points providing more than 2,920 service hours to the protection of Texas Rivers.

Help the Homeless During the cold months, the Division sponsors this student-led initiative bringing food, clothing and shoes to the homeless population of Austin.

Hundreds of pairs of gently used shoes were distributed to the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH). Additionally, this program served meals and delivered shoes to the residents of the Arbor Terrace facility managed by Caritas of Austin. Arbor Terrace is a supportive housing community for people who are transitioning out of homelessness.
