Impacting children’s lives

An example of fundraising communication

Please see below some short texts extracted from various general letters

Greetings from SOS Children’s Villages Mozambique. It is an enormous joy to guide you through this letter to the land where the blue of the water emanates, and the warm and round sun enchants and cheers the children in the village. In this letter, I will tell you about all the important and exciting events that have taken place in the village since our last communication until now.

Allow me to thank you for your support and concern for the children’s well-being, it is thanks to you that children can grow up in a happy and loving home. Thank you very much! Please remember, that, as always, although the stories that I will tell you are true, I have changed the names of those mentioned to protect their privacy.

Well, here in the village the children spent Christmas at their mothers’ houses in the various neighborhoods of the village, where they had the opportunity to interact with the children from the community. “Uncle, this was the best Christmas ever! Mom took us to celebrate in Katembe”, said Carlos smiling.

Danny comments: “From mom’s house I could see the Maputo-Katembe bridge, it’s really big! I can’t wait for next Christmas to go back there to play with my cousins.” Their SOS mother added: “Happiness overflowed on the children’s faces. They barely slept when they found out that this year Christmas would be in Katembe.”

The fact that the children spent Christmas outside the village, at their mother’s house, made this Christmas one of the best. Children had the opportunity to interact with the outside world, as well as discover new places and make new friends. Thank you so much for helping to shape incredible memories for the children, without your support none of this would be possible.

There is nothing stronger than the relationship between siblings.

School time

After a busy holiday, she was quite excited to resume classes and meet old friends and classmates. Ancha says, “I couldn’t wait to go back to school and see my friends, I wanted so badly to tell them how good my holiday was. The first few weeks I didn’t have much trouble waking up, I went to school on time.” She adds, “Even now that it’s winter, that it’s hard to get out of bed because of the cold, I kept arriving at school on time.”

Cristina, her mother, comments - “Ancha sis very smart. She only brings good marks.” Ancha keeps her routine very adjusted to school, and maybe that’s why she is so successful in school. Ancha declares, “I always comes back from school, and I help my mom with some activities here at home and then, I sit at the table to study.”

Ancha is very committed when it comes to school, she never failed to do a homework given by the teachers. This year, Ancha attends fourth grade, with two more disciplines in her curriculum, however, I am very confident that it will be a year full of success for her.

Time with my family

Ancha spends many afternoons with her siblings playing and helping them with their homework. The family has made it a habit for them all to sit on the patio to share what they learn at school, so they can help each other with their homework. Ancha is very committed to being part of her brothers’ lives. Sometimes, when they finish their homework, they call their mama who comes over to tell them funny stories.

Telling stories about the community

Ukumi Project, 2023

Ukumi, a window of hope for in Metuge

The Ukumi project was designed with the main objective of helping children affected by conflict to grow up safe and secure and to be supported to build and maintain good mental health. Ukumi expects to reach 34,000 children in Cabo Delgado.

Under this project, several parents are receiving various training in terms of mental health, psychosocial support and above all, they receive training in vocational courses, in order to guarantee them a skill that can be profitable, thus assuming some expenses at home. in order to meet the needs of their children.

Maria comments - “Through this project I learn how to deal better with my children, helping them to understand how and why our lives have changed. More than that, I’ve been attending the sewing course here in Metuge. I already know how to make a few pieces of clothing, by the way, last week I learned how to make pants for my son. She adds - “I hope the village will continue to support us with projects like this.”

Carlos, who learns electricity says - “This project appeared when all seemed lost. My hope of being able to provide a better future for my children rose again. I hope that through this course I can work as an electrician and get back on my feet again, and who knows, when the war is over, I can return to my hometown and teach the community about electricity.”

PROVIDING FOR COMMUNITIES THROUGH FAMILY STRENGTHENING PROGRAM

The Family Strengthening Programme supports several families with kits for the conception of businesses in order to create income for families. This year, the peanut crusher has become quite popular among families. The program offered five machines to families so they could do business and generate income.

“With my machine, today I can support my family, I can buy school supplies for my children and nephews. In addition, I actively participate in two savings, one of which is the emergency savings, where we use the funds to buy school supplies for our children and pay for any unforeseen medical expenses,” says Felecidade, a local widow and participant of the program. About 588 people benefit directly from these funds in the different communities where the program is there providing and supporting families.

The familes have used their earnings to improve not only their lives, but also those close to them. Felecidade adds, “Before, people had to go to the market to get the peanut pulp, however, now they don’t need to travel kilometers because I have a machine here at home. And with that, I also increased my business volume, now I sell various food products.”

Like Felicidade’s family, there are 147 families distributed by Maxaquene A and B, Urbanizacão, Polana Caniço and Mafalala that have benefited from these support and opportunities, and in this way, guaranteeing sustenance and basic rights for children, such as education and decent food. None of this would be possible without your support. Thank You!
