Structure

This program provides an opportunity for primary care physicians to develop an expertise in the areas of musculoskeletal and sport medicine. Sports medicine fellows will have opportunities to work in a sports medicine clinic with fellowship-trained primary care sports medicine physicians and orthopedic surgeons, with physicians in specialty clinics, and with high school and collegiate athletes.

Our fellowship is a unique partnership between UT Health Northeast and Trinity Clinic Orthopedics and Sports Medicine. It is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and by the American Board of Family Medicine (ABFM). We accept one fellow per year.

Broaden knowledge of anatomy and physiology.

Refine clinical skills.

Obtain a broad knowledge base of medical issues related to exercise in athletes.

Developing skills in evaluating and treating common orthopedic injuries as well as primary care sports medicine issues.

Become proficient in common orthopedic office procedures.

Appropriately apply skills in several environments, including in the office setting, the athletic training room, and in event coverage.

Be exposed to the multidisciplinary approach of caring for patients through interaction with athletic trainers, physical therapists, orthopedic surgeons, and other specialists.

Friday Mornings Sports Medicine Conferences—two hours each week with lectures given by the fellow and faculty throughout the year for didactics covering a wide range of topics.

Sessions also include radiology conferences, journal clubs, and evidence-based medicine sessions.

Mentorship—There are various residents and occasionally medical students that rotate through the Sports Medicine Clinic. The fellow will play an important role in the education of these learners.

Resident Lectures—Quarterly sports medicine lectures are given to the family medicine residents.

Monthly rotations throughout the year with various specialists including orthopedic hand, orthopedic foot/ankle, neurosurgery, podiatry, musculoskeletal radiology, physical therapy, and other specialty groups.

Development of expertise in musculoskeletal and sports medicine.

Work with local high school and collegiate athletes.

Gain experience through pre-participation screenings and exams, with treatment of acute and chronic musculoskeletal injuries, side-line coverage, mass participation coverage, injury prevention, and in management.

Promote learning using an evidence-based approach.

Enhance skills in critical analysis of the scientific literature.

Gain experience in presenting at sports medicine conferences including national conferences.

Additional scholarly activities including submitting journal articles, writing book chapters, and research are encouraged, but are an optional part of the curriculum.
