Mission Statement The purpose of Utah WSF is to promote and enhance increasing populations of indigenous wild sheep to Utah, to safeguard against the decline or extinction of such species, and to fund programs for professional management of these populations, keeping all administrative costs to a minimum.

We are vigorously involved in the conservation, propagation and intensive management of the remaining wild sheep populations and their habitats. The Foundation annually funds a wide variety of meaningful and essential projects with some major areas of consideration being; wildlife enhancement, management, the re-establishment of wild sheep, and sportsmen’s rights.

Message From The President Travis Jenson The 2021 hunting season is behind us and it’s time to start looking forward to the 2022 application and banquet/convention seasons. Utah WSF had a very successful 2021 banquet in Saint George this past May and we are looking forward to continuing the growth of our banquet from both an attendance and revenue perspective going forward. Check out the banquet section on page 20 of this magazine for additional information. Our 2022 banquet is scheduled for Saturday, April 9th at the Salt Lake City Sheraton— please mark that date on your calendar! Ticket sales are now available at www.utahwsf.org.

As Utah WSF continues to expand and improve as an organization, it is exciting to see some of the long-term projects that we have been working on come to fruition. The creation of the Desert Bighorn Sheep nursery herd was recently announced with coverage in both print and live news outlets, with the intent to transplant in 2022. Additionally, the guzzler inspection and maintenance program has made fantastic progress addressing water needs of our wild sheep herds throughout the state. Special thanks to Utah WSF Board Member Brett Miller for taking the lead on this project.

As we continue to work towards the expansion of Utah’s wild sheep herds, 2022 should be a busy transplant season, with focus on establishing the Desert Bighorn nursery herd and supplementing the Mineral Mountains and Antelope Island herds. Longer term, we are looking to supplement the Range Creek herd and establish a new Rocky Mtn Bighorn herd on the Pahvant.

Through the Utah DWR wildlife working group our relationships with the DWR, partner conservation groups and the agricultural community are producing huge dividends in advancing our organization’s mission.

As Utah WSF continues to grow as an organization, we are pleased to announce the addition of Bob Friel and Brett Miller to the Board of Directors.

Mr. Friel’s background in banking and finance make him an ideal fit for co-chairman of the financial advisory committee. Acting as the liaison between the Board of Directors, our independent financial advisory board, and Utah WSF investment advisors, Mr. Friel will be focused on growth of the Utah WSF Endowment Fund.

As co-chair of the conservation projects committee, Mr. Miller’s passion for Wild Sheep and enjoyment of hard work are creating huge benefits for our wild sheep herds. This year alone Utah WSF committed almost $75,000 in funding for inspection, maintenance and installation of guzzler projects on Utah’s sheep units. Utah WSF Endowment Fund In 2018 the Utah WSF Endowment Fund was established. This process included creation of: an Endowment Fund policy document; an independent financial advisory board; and the retention of a professional financial advisor at Merrill Lynch. In the last 3 years the balance of our fund has grown by over 30%.

Giant Moves Made in 2021 for Utah Bighorn Populations

By Riley Peck, UDWR Once-in-a-lifetime Coordinator In 2021 Utah took giant leaps forward in ensuring the future of Bighorn sheep not only in the state but arguably the entire West. After receiving direction from Utah’s wildlife board and multiple years of searching, we have secured a location to hold our Desert Bighorn sheep nursery herd. This location will be one of the first of its kind in that we are collaborating with a private landowner.

We are collaborating with Young Living to create the first “nursery” for Desert Bighorn sheep in Utah in an effort to help grow the species’ population in the state.

The new Desert Bighorn sheep nursery will be located on roughly 1,800 acres of private land — the SkyRider Wilderness Ranch — owned and managed by Young Living in Hanna, Utah in Duchesne County. The area provides a water source and good habitat for Bighorn sheep and it is properly fenced to prevent them from wandering off the property. The UDWR is the primary landowner of land bordering the Ranch.

The need for this facility is obvious to those who understand Bighorn sheep biology. It is difficult to mention Bighorn management without also discussing the disease issues that plague wild sheep populations. It has taken decades to understand what exactly is causing die-offs, subsequent years of poor lamb recruitment, and the vast differences in herd performance being observed in diseased populations. There is still much to be learned, but disease management has come a long way in recent years. We believe this new understanding coupled with secure facilities like those that are mentioned will be key to sustainable populations in the future.

We are partnering with the Nevada Department of Wildlife to get the initial Desert Bighorn sheep for the nursery herd. The nursery area can support roughly 150 Bighorn sheep. Hunting will 12 | 2022 Utah WSF

not be allowed on the property. As populations increase excess animals will be transplanted throughout the state to create new populations or to supplement existing ones.

UDWR is also excited about a new facility located in Springville, Utah. This last summer, on division owned lands, Utah’s first quarantine facility was completed. The area is 4 acres of irrigated grassland with perennial water surrounded by a 10’ high fence. In the corner of this enclosure is a processing area for in the field examinations.

This area will be used to assist in examining wild sheep before they are released to their wild herds. As our knowledge of different herd dynamics increase and specifically what disease strains infect different populations, we can catch a wondering animal and place the animal in this quarantine facility. The Bighorn can wait in this facility while appropriate tests are finished to determine if it is safe to return the animal to its herd without increased disease risk.

There are currently around 2,800 Desert Bighorn sheep and 1,500 Rocky Mountain Bighorn sheep in Utah.

Despite the challenges that face Bighorn sheep, they continually bounce back in spite of setbacks.

The year 2021 will be remember as one where Utah made giant moves toward self-sustainable Bighorn populations. Without organizations like the Utah Wild Sheep Foundation, this would not be possible. I want to thank every single person who reads this article and cares about the future of Bighorn sheep in Utah. It is not an easy journey, but the cause is well worth the effort. The future of Bighorn sheep is bright, and we look forward to working together with the Utah Wild Sheep Foundation to put and keep wild sheep on the mountain.

As source herds become less available, Utah WSF, the Utah DWR, and our partner conservation groups continue to work to maintain viable source herds for these translocations. 2022 RECIPIENT OF THE GORDON EASTMAN GRASS ROOTS AWARD AT WSF SHEEP SHOW

Founding member of Utah FNAWS and former President and Director Lee Howard, was the 2022 recipient of the Gordon Eastman Grass Roots Award at the 2022 WSF Sheep Show. Lee was presented the award by WSF President Gray Thornton and long-time friend Keele Johnson.

30+ years ago when Lee was hosting dutch-oven fundraising events on behalf of Utah FNAWS, who would have imagined how his initial efforts would be the foundation for the eventual transplant of more than 1,000 wild Bighorn sheep within the State of Utah and the establishment of numerous Desert, Rocky and California Bighorn sheep herds.

Congratulations Lee, this award is very well deserved and a sincere “Thank You” for your tireless dedication to wild sheep throughout the Western United States and particularly in Utah. Without your efforts, we certainly would not have anywhere near the wild sheep herds in Utah that we have now, nor would our organization be able to pursue its mission statement at its current level.

It is very fitting that Lee was able to harvest a California Bighorn this year from a herd that he was instrumental in establishing. Once again, congratulations Lee, on a lifetime of commitment to wild sheep preservation.

2021 Annual Utah WSF Banquet Although it was scheduled and organized with less than 6 weeks notice and moved almost 300 miles from our planned location, the 2021 Utah WSF banquet was still a very successful event. A new record was set for banquet only revenue of $156,363, up from our previous banquet record in 2019 of $132,668. Numerous records were also set for individual conservation permit prices as well as overall conservation permit revenue. A very special “thank you” goes out to those members that made the trip to Saint George to support Utah WSF in 2021.

Our 2022 banquet is scheduled for Saturday, April 9th, 2022 at the Salt Lake City Sheraton Hotel. By the time you receive this magazine, you should have already received several save the date notices and mailers. INTERNATIONAL HUNTING OPPORTUNITIES - BY SUMMITS OF RUSSIA Dear friends, our hunting buddies, For many remarkable years we share with you the warmth and the coziness of campfires in the most unique places of our beautiful planet. And for two we have accumulated more than forty successful hunting seasons. Together with our clients-trophy hunters we climbed, rode, drove and flew hundreds of thousands of miles. Hundreds of magnificent trophies, which are kept in the trophy rooms around the world, were a reward to all of us. But the grand prize for all hardsteep rises, long stormy days of forced inaction in the cold tent and many hours of waiting in impenetrable fog were our joint memories, which we will keep in our hearts forever. We are grateful to you for these memories. And we will be happy to replenish them with new brightest and unforgettable impressions.

Here we introduce one of the most wishful trophies – Eastern, or Dagestan, Tur. The Caucasus Mountains’ highland is a very rough country. It has a lot of glaciers, deep gorges and steep rocky slopes.

It is a real Goat country. And they are there – the Turs! Three species inhabit these remote areas. The most numerous Dagestan, or Eastern Tur is a bit smaller in body size and has darker skin and shorter beard. Horns have smooth surface, are rounded in cross cut and curve just above the neck.

We hunt Eastern Tur in Azerbaijan, in a very well-known Sheki area, and in Russian Dagestan republic. Average trophy size is 30-35-inch, with giants up to 40+ inches.

You can fly to Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, through Istanbul, Frankfurt or Moscow. Or to Makhachkala, the capital of Dagestan, through Moscow. We will meet and help you with custom formalities. Depends of arrival time, it will be overnight in the city, or same day transfer to the camp. It takes 4-5 hours by van to the base camp. The way to spike camps takes another 2-3 hours of horseback ride or more on foot.

The hunters are accommodated in tented camps with kitchen, dining room and generator. In the spike camp, we have a simple propane stove to make hot meals and water. We provide a separate tent for each hunter, but you should bring your sleeping bag and pad.

The hunting season lasts from May 01 to October 30, with the best time from June to September.

As always in the high mountains, the weather is unpredictable. In August and early September daytime temperatures of 80°F can drop to 40°F in the nights. The proximity of glaciers and permanent snow influences much. In late September and October daytime temperatures of 60°F fall to 20°F at night. You can see the first snow at the tops in the beginning of September. Fog and rain are common at this time of the year as well.

It is 5-day spot-and-stalk hunt, done on foot. However, it only sounds effortless. You have to prepare yourself for tough hiking and climbing. Horse ride experience is necessary as well. Improve your shooting skills for a long distance, up to 500-600 yards, with average of 250-350.
