The Utah Taxpayer - October 2022 Utah Property Tax Law in the Spotlight: After Kansas Copies Utah in 2021, Nebraska Kicks off Truth in Taxation in 2022, Iowa Set to Follow Now that Kansas and Nebraska have implemented robust Truth in Taxation legislation, the state of Iowa is set on a course to pass similar legislation in the coming months. As states continue to highlight the benefits of Utah’s law, policymakers in Utah can take comfort in knowing that our system is the gold standard of the nation and needs to be protected from attempts to undermine it.

Heads Up: Even with a Surplus a Gas Tax Increase of 14% is Coming January 1, 2023 While the State of Utah is swimming in surplus revenue (the Fiscal Year 2022 budget surplus is at least $1.4 billion), an often forgotten piece of legislation will be causing an automatic tax hike in a few months: beginning January 1st, 2023, the Utah gas tax will increase by 4.5 cents to 36.4 cents per gallon for both gasoline and diesel.

Alpine School District Proposes a Staggering Amount of Bonds to Issue - $595 Million, While Orem Proposes to Split From the District Voters in the Alpine School District will be voting on the largest proposed school district bond issue ever in the state of Utah, at $595 million. Your Utah Taxpayers Association issued a statement about the proposal along with an explanation of our


NEUTRAL position on it. Voters in Orem will also be voting on a proposal, Proposition 2, that would split Orem from the Alpine School District and form a new district of their own. The Utah Taxpayers Association has done extensive research on the proposal and issued a statement urging voters in Orem to vote YES on Proposition 2.

Legislative Audit Uncovers Problems with Tax Increment Financing in Utah The Office of the Legislative Auditor General presented a report at the September interim hearing of the Legislative Audit Committee that outlined some of the problems withTIF and gave several recommendations on how these might be addressed in statute. Your Utah Taxpayers Association will be working on legislation during the 2023 session to make these needed changes.
