Welcome Utah Film Center welcomes you to the 13th edition of the Damn These Heels LGBT Film Festival.

The year’s festival offers 21 feature films and a short film program that explore many facets of the LGBT experience. Truths are unveiled, tragedies are examined, and victories are celebrated by LGBT voices of all walks of life. Beginning on Opening Night we have the pleasure of hosting three of the “San Antonio Four” so they may share their unbelievable story with our community in Southwest of Salem. To close the festival, we invite you on a journey back to 1990 on Madonna’s Blonde Ambition World Tour with the charming film, Strike A Pose. We are also fortunate to have two of the Tour’s dancers and film subjects in attendance for a post-film Q&A. Between these powerful bookends are many other remarkable films, most screening for the first time in Utah. Never has a Damn These Heels lineup offered viewers a more comprehensive peek into various LGBT perspectives. From Palestine to Germany to Venezuela to India, the 13th annual Damn These Heels Festival is truly a global showcase of LGBTQ cinema.

We are proud to share these powerful stories with you. Our community, both in Utah and beyond, needs to hear voices like those in Major!, as a trans* women of color exclaims, “I’m still fucking here” into the camera, to remind everyone that though we have come a long way, we have more to accomplish in terms of establishing equal rights for all and abolishing hatred. Utah has evolved since the inaugural festival 13 years ago. No one could have imagined that we would one day lead the nation in the fight for marriage equality, nor could they have fathomed that we would have the nation’s first openly trans* major party nominee for a U.S. Senate primary election. But alas, we did and we do.

Utah, the Film Center, and Damn These Heels, are still fucking here and we are as proud as ever. Thank you for supporting LGBTQ equality and community builiding through the power of film.

Welcome all to the 2016 Damn These Heels LGBT Film Festival—get ready to enjoy a full schedule of the best in LGBTQ-themed film! This is the 13th anniversary of the only LGBT film festival in Utah and the Intermountain West, and an event our community anticipates each year.

Producing this year’s festival was literally an act of rising from the ashes for the Utah Film Center. A devastating fire earlier this year destroyed the Utah Film Center office but certainly not the non-profit’s energy and dedication. In a very real sense, this is a coming-out party for the Film Center.

This weekend is an opportunity to celebrate our diverse lives and interests through cutting-edge cinema, and to be educated, entertained, and challenged through the expression of LGBTQ history, culture, ideas, struggles, and victories.

Our community has lived through a year of triumph and tragedy. Finally, thanks to the U.S. Supreme Court decision to finally recognize full marriage equality, many loving, relationships have been galvanized by the power of law. Cheer as we may, we also collectively grieve the massacre of our LGBTQ and ally sisters and brothers in Orlando.

We know hate crimes are as real as ever, and that LGBTQ people remain targets for those who would try to shatter our unity. But we will not be overcome by fear.

Enjoy this safe and supportive environment at the beautiful Rose Wagner Performing Arts Center. And thank you for contributing to Salt Lake City’s thriving arts and cultural scene and our economy. Letter from Troy Williams

Stories change the world.

As we look back on the astonishing achievements of the LGBTQ movement here in Utah and across the country, we must first stop and thank our storytellers. They have pulled our stories out of the reluctant celluloid closet to transform a nation.

Storytellers challenge stereotypes and expose bigotry. They crack open hearts and expand the most stubborn of minds. They tell the story of ‘us;’ our community, movement, and individual lives. They reveal the most profound truth of any social movement: our most staggering losses often lead to our greatest triumphs.

Historically, the story of the LGBTQ community was told by our adversaries. Notorious characters like Anita Bryant, James Dobson, and Gayle Ruzika crafted deceptive and dangerous narratives to justify our oppression. But then came along a bold generation of new queer filmmakers like Derek Jarman, Todd Haynes, John Waters, Jennie Livingston, Gregg Araki, Lana and Lilly Wachowski and so, so many more. These brilliant storytellers taught us how to reclaim our narratives from those who would harm us. We have finally become the screenwriter of our own lives.

Cinema is perhaps the most powerful medium for telling our stories. Utah Film Center and the Damn These Heels LGBT Film Festival masterfully curate the stories that shape our movement. This weekend will certainly feature stories that provoke and inspire.

We have many stories left to share. There are still hearts that need to be cracked open right here in Utah. This is a lifelong project that belongs to each of us. Let’s share our stories and transform the culture. The world needs us now to be nothing less than fabulous.

Joey lives in rural Pennsylvania and is spending her summer serving ice cream at the county fair—working toward no apparent goal. After a visit to the U.S. Army recruiting office, the recent high school graduate appears to have found a path to a new future: a life in the service. Just as she enlists and becomes shackled to this new life, she meets Rayna, a 27-year-old, vivacious, sexy mother of two. From the moment Joey lays eyes on Rayna, she can’t help but be infatuated.

From its inception, their love affair is shrouded in secrecy. The morning after the first night’s drunken evening together, Joey has an awkward walk-of-shame moment when she meets Rayna’s two young daughters and they ask if she wants to stay for a lunch of macaroni and cheese. The major problem, of course, is that Rayna is married.

When Joey’s mother announces that it is time for her to move out, and Rayna makes it clear that their trysts will never become anything more, Joey must make choices about her future with limited possibilities. With Rayna’s encouragement and no other viable options for housing or employment, Joey enters the army. Days before deployment to Afghanistan and still wildly in love, Joey returns home with plans for Rayna and her kids.

AWOL is a love story. It is a rural love story and a lesbian love story, and it vividly portrays the choices that young people in this country have—and don’t have.

A national treasure in France, writer and director André Téchiné continues his storied career with his new film, Being 17. Returning to the roots of his post-New Wave style of filmmaking, Téchiné creates a compact drama that plays out against an imposing mountain backdrop.

Damien is the pampered teenage son of a soldier and a doctor. He lives with his mother in an army barracks in the south of France while his father is on a military mission in the Central African Republic. But Damien must adopt a new, defiant stance in high school to stave off the bullies who taunt him over his effeminate ways: a friend of his father’s is teaching him to wrestle.

When he meets Tom, the adopted son of local farmers, the antagonism between the two boys is immediate and visceral. When Tom’s mother has to go to the hospital, Damien’s mother quite naturally offers to take care of Tom, and the tension between the two boys becomes almost overwhelming.

Kacey Mottet Klein and Corentin Fila are utterly engrossing as Damien and Tom, and every glance and gesture sensitively captures their exhilarating chemistry. Téchiné’s film breathes with a poetic temperance that marks it as a beautifully structured, finely acted ballad of teenage angst and passion.

Closet Monster is a fresh and highly original take on the coming-of-age story. In his feature film debut, director Stephen Dunn uses masterful tone and visual authority to create a film that moves in and out of reality.

Oscar is an aspiring special-effects makeup artist finishing his last year of high school in a small town in Newfoundland. Oscar hangs out with his best friend, Gemma, who shares his dream of breaking into the big time in New York City. Oscar’s only other friend is his pet hamster, Buffy (voiced by Isabella Rossellini). Since he lacks nothing in ambition or talent, Oscar’s biggest obstacles are dangerously unresolved issues from his childhood. Buffy sums up the situation best as she comforts Oscar: “I was born in a factory farm to an overweight rodent who tried to eat me. It doesn’t mean my life can’t be different.”

Trapped in a mind-numbing job at a home-improvement store, Oscar meets his new and effortlessly sexy coworker, Wilder, whose tattooed heedlessness triggers a hormonal tsunami. Oscar is forced to confront the sexuality that he has been conditioned to regard as unsafe—something that must be hidden.

An intriguing mix of touching drama and whimsical fantasy, Closet Monster is a treat for the senses as it blends macabre horror with playful innocence. Dunn’s film plays with perspective and style, but all the flash never obscures its deep emotion and heart.

Wealthy, middle-aged Armando lures young men to his home with money. He doesn’t want to touch them, only look at them from a safe distance. By showing them handfuls of cash, Armando takes blue-collar young men home, sits them down on his comfortable chair, and watches them undress without ever trying to touch them. This appears to be Armando’s sole form of sexual gratification, but his next attempt goes poorly when he meets street thug Elder, a 17-year-old boy who is the leader of a criminal gang.

Armando’s first encounter with Elder is violent, but this doesn’t diminish the lonely man’s fascination with this tough handsome teenager. Financial incentive keeps Elder visiting him regularly, and an unexpected intimacy between the two men emerges.

Set in the Caracas slums, first-time filmmaker Lorenzo Vigas’s turbulent film charts a complex relationship between two men from different worlds. Winner of the Golden Lion for best film at the Venice Film Festival, From Afar is an uncompromising piece of queer cinema. The film explores a complicated, and awfully repressed, truth not only about gay desire, but desire in general: wanting something seems completely contingent on the unavailability of what one wants.

Sidney is an aging glam rocker who works as a drag queen in a seedy, decrepit bar. After his exgirlfriend disappears, Sidney is forced to look after his 11-year-old-son, George, full time. His “cool dad” façade quickly falls apart, and his life goes into a full tailspin as he struggles to let go of his rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle.

Perfectly portrayed by the film’s cowriter Tomas Pais, Sidney sports chipped multicolored nails, a worn-out leopard-print jacket, and bright yellow hair, evocative of the look David Bowie touts on the cover of his Hunky Dory album. Sidney spends most of his down-and-out existence performing latenight drag at a dive bar, drinking and smoking, fending off unwanted advances from strange men, and paying visits to a surprisingly vast array of folks around town—friends, retired drag queens, and sugar mamas and daddies—asking for money.

As Sidney realizes that his ex may never return for George, he grows increasingly panic stricken, knowing and fearing that he and his lifestyle may be unfit for taking care of his son permanently.

Hunky Dory is every man’s and every woman’s story. Perhaps not to the degree Sidney takes it, but in relation to the things we have to do to get where our heart wants to be. This film reminds us that real love is often within reach, but we are often too bruised and broken to see or try and claim it.

In this powerfully beautiful film from Germany, Jonathan is a young man who is caring for his terminally ill father, Burghardt. When Burghardt is stricken with cancer, Jonathan must put his dreams aside to be his father’s caretaker and become responsible for managing the family farm with his conservative and deeply religious Aunt Martha. Estranged from her brother, but aware that Jonathan can’t do everything alone, Martha hires the lovely and mysterious Anka as a nurse to care for Burghardt. Jonathan falls in love with Anka and finds a brief respite from the responsibilities that weigh so heavily on him.

But when Burghardt’s long-lost friend, Ron, arrives, everything turns upside down. Jonathan can’t understand why Martha despises Ron, why she refuses to speak to her dying brother, or why his father has so much affection for this stranger. Long-buried family secrets come to light as the characters explore the complicated, sometimes heartbreaking, but ultimately uplifting dynamics of life, death, love, loss, family, and acceptance.

Gia Marie Love, a community activist and member of the underground Ballroom and Kiki scene, and Sundance Institute Associate Programmer Lauren Cioffi, will be present for a post-film Q&A. Twenty-five years after Paris is Burning, we dive back into the fierce world of voguing battles in the Kiki scene of New York City, where competition between Houses demands leadership, painstaking practice, and performances on point.

A film collaboration between Kiki gatekeeper, Twiggy Pucci Garçon, and Swedish filmmaker Sara Jordenö, we’re granted exclusive access into this high stakes world, where tough competitions act as a gateway into the daily lives of LGBTQ youth of color in NYC. The new generation of ballroom youth use the motto, “Not About us Without Us.” Twiggy and Sara’s insider-outsider approach to their stories breathes fresh life into the representation of a marginalized community who demand visibility and real political power. It’s easy to fall in love with the underground dancing in Kiki, while the backbone showcases the House family structures, thereby allowing community members to flourish. Inspiring leadership, today’s Kiki scene is made up of strong relationships and unbelievable resilience, which fill this frank and frenetic film with great hope. Kiki continues traditions of the past while defiantly rooting itself in today’s politics, style, and language.

Loev may seem unsensational compared to many LGBT films from around the world, but in India, where homosexuality is punishable by law, this film is quietly revolutionary. In fact, the film was shot in complete secrecy to avoid any repercussions. First-time writer/director Sudhanshu Saria describes making this film “as a way to deal with a hurt I didn’t know how to process.” His film pulsates with the sad legacy of a national move to delegitimize love for certain people.

Sahil is a young Indian music producer who’s getting increasingly frustrated with his boyfriend, who seems incapable of taking anything seriously or remembering something as simple as paying a bill.

When Sahil’s longtime friend Jai, now a Wall Street hotshot, reveals he’s heading to Mumbai for the weekend, Sahil drops everything to go and see him.

Heading off into the countryside and then back into the city, the duo delicately negotiate their feelings for one another. Over the course of the weekend, the amorous details of their relationship unfold, although their current life circumstances make a sexually fulfilling relationship impossible.

Loev is less about being denied something natural and more about that familiar, gender-neutral, and quintessentially human experience of interpreting a multitude of feelings that you cannot hope to understand. It takes a historical look into 40-plus years of LGBT experiences. This is the history of a community’s struggle and resilience. It is the personalized vision of a powerful, charismatic force that is Miss Major.

We watch the three men as they cook meals, dance at parties, lie on the beach, and make politically charged short films for YouTube. Coinciding with the 2014 war in Gaza, Oriented portrays the challenges not only faced by those who live in this tumultuous region but also those experienced by gay Arab men.

Several films have documented the social and political repercussions of being gay in Palestine. This film is an intimate portrait of that, but it is so much more. It introduces us to assertive young people who insist on their right to define their identity the way they choose.

Oriented examines the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in a compassionate and funny, yet moving, way.

Through his unique lens, director Witzenfeld gives us an intimate peek into a world that outsiders rarely get to see. This important film will not only change the way you view the conflict in the Middle East but will make you feel invested in its subjects in a very personal way.

Bemz and her eclectic team of queer political warriors must rethink traditional campaign strategies to amass support from unlikely places. Taking their equality campaign to small-town hair salons and regional beauty pageants, the activists mobilize workingclass trans* hairdressers and beauty queens to join the fight against their main political opponent, a homophobic evangelical preacher, and prove to the Filipino electorate that it is time to take the rights of LGBT people seriously.

Culminating on election day, Out Run provides a unique look into the challenges LGBT people face as they transition into the mainstream and fight for dignity, legitimacy, and acceptance across the globe. Ladlad challenges microaggressive behavior in hopes of persuading the general public to see its members as equals. The race is more than just political. It represents a shift in the nation’s growing acceptance of LGBT Filipinos.

We travel with four women, all in extremely early stages of coming out, as they attend the Esprit Conference, an annual event in Vancouver, Washington, where trans* women who have lived closeted their whole lives come together in an accepting environment that allows them to express their true identity. From here we follow the lives of these same four women over the course of nearly three years as they grapple with varying degrees of transition.

There is Nina, 67, a pizza delivery person who identifies as trans* but struggles to decide the best way to reveal her true self to her wife of nearly 40 years. Amy, 72, the eldest of the group, loses her wife of many years and opens her home to fellow trans* people seeking support. The final two women are Krystal, 47, and Jodie, 49, two former brothers who now identify as sisters.

Their courage is astonishing, as is their outlook, including the sage advice that comes from one of the women and explains the film’s title. She compares trans* people to oysters: “You gotta find that pearl and forget the shell.”

Set the Thames on Fire follows two young men’s episodic adventures through the dank alleys and depraved nightlife of a ravaged London. Director Ben Charles Edwards’s background as a painter is evident in his directorial debut. This genre film is visually stunning. Fans of Terry Gilliam will see his influence on this first-time director.

The film pits ignorance against decadence as we follow lovelorn piano actor Art (Michael Winder) and wannabe soldier Sal (Max Bennett). Art is a down-on-his-luck, lowlife pianist whose momentum has stalled in a grief-filled frozen moment: he is shipwrecked on the lonesome shore of his own life. Sal is a cracked pinball machine—full of energy, light, and fun but out of control and dangerously chaotic.

Their grim adventure begins when the boys meet while working a cocktail party for the rich and violent and their relationship begins to blossom.

The boys become enmeshed in the cogs of fate as they turn, like two rats caught in the machinery of Big Ben, and are dragged ever nearer to a terrifying conclusion. Despite the darkness and danger, the boys find solace and laughter in one another and bloom like weeds in the gutter. With nothing to lose, they fall through the clockwork of the city in search of escape and, perhaps, even hope renewed. Ever present in the background is the dark and powerful Thames River, representing the forces of nature, chance, and instinct.

This documentary expertly weaves a tale of passion, obsession, greed, and theft. Using an artful mix of archival interviews and firsthand accounts, The Slippers introduces us to the costumer who found the shoes in a dusty bin on the backlot of MGM studios and relates the way they have been bought, sold, stolen, and treasured by owner after owner over the years. Some consider the ruby slippers to be the most iconic piece of Hollywood memorabilia of all time, and they have fetched hundreds of thousands of dollars at auction. To this day, no one really knows how many pairs of shoes actually exist! SOUTHWEST OF SALEM: The Story of the San Antonio Four

Hailed by some critics as the next Making a Murderer, Southwest of Salem delves into the case of four Latina women who were convicted of sexually assaulting two little girls in San Antonio, Texas, in 1994. Anna Vasquez, Elizabeth Ramirez, Cassandra Rivera, and Kristie Mayhugh became known as The San Antonio Four during their trial.

Though they had virtually no physical evidence, prosecutors used the persistent, yet unfounded, notion that LGBT people are predisposed to harm children sexually to make their case. As one of the women explains, the feeling in the courtroom was that “this is what gay people do.� There was also an underlying accusation of satanism, and the women were portrayed as a coven of gay witches. Though that seems unbelievable today, there was a strong belief at the time in Texas that there were secret satanic cults that were brainwashing and abusing children. Because these two specious arguments were allowed into the courtroom, the women were convicted of a crime that they obviously did not commit.

Following their conviction, the women were imprisoned in different facilities, and each one continued to maintain her innocence. At one point, they had given up hope, but their case was rediscovered by the Innocence Project of Texas, which is currently representing the four women as they fight for exoneration.

Director Deborah Esquenazi skillfully weaves this story together using firstperson interviews and current and archival footage that is both infuriating for its depiction of an obvious miscarriage of justice and sad for its portrait of women who are working to reclaim their lives, reconnect with their children and families, and secure their freedom after more than 15 years of imprisonment.

In 1990, Madonna launched the now legendary Blonde Ambition World Tour and solidified her LGBT influence in the pop cultural zeitgeist with a group of seven male back-up dancers. Directors Ester Gould and Reijer Zwaan craft their story beginning at the moment Madonna places an ad that read “FIERCE male dancers who know the meaning of TROOP STYLE, BEAT BOY and VOGUE… wimps and Wanna-Be’s need not apply,” through the filming of the controversial behind-the-scenes documentary Truth or Dare, which presented Madonna and her group of seven dancers as an out-and-proud ensemble promoting a sex-positive and diversity-embracing messages at the height of the AIDS epidemic, to the aftermath of the tour, which earned accusations of obscenity and blasphemy at various tour stops.

Strike a Pose continues to explore the direction the dancers’ lives have taken, while looking back at their time as part of a groundbreaking and empowering event. The dancers—Kevin Stea, Oliver Crumes, Salim Gauwloos, Jose Gutierez, Luis Camacho, Gabriel Trupin and Carlton Wilborn—reflect on being swept up into Madonna’s world and their lives after the tour that found some of them involved in lawsuits and learning to live with HIV. Their willingness to discuss all of their highs and lows presents a touching portrait of a group of young men who found the courage to be themselves and in doing so, inspired a generation of LGBT youth.

To Uncle Howard director Aaron Brookner, he was a loving and inspirational uncle who died of AIDS when Aaron was only seven and Howard was on the brink of a promising filmmaking career. Aaron’s fascination with his uncle has continued his entire life and led him on a challenging, multi-decade quest to recover his uncle’s photos and films.

Uncle Howard is the result of Aaron’s successful mission to preserve his uncle’s legacy—beginning with Howard’s 1983 debut film Burroughs: The Movie, the first and most revealing film about the iconic writer, and ending with photographs and rehearsal videos of Madonna from Bloodhounds of Broadway, which Howard rushed to finish before his inevitable demise. Orry George Kelly designed costumes for a multitude of classic films—including 42nd Street, An American in Paris, Auntie Mame, Casablanca, The Maltese Falcon, and Some Like It Hot—and was a favorite designer and dinner companion of Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, Ava Gardner, and many other leading ladies. Having designed costumes for nearly 300 films, he was Australia’s most prolific Oscar winner (three awards) until Catherine Martin overtook him in 2014. He was also a roommate of Archibald Leach—the future Cary Grant—in a tiny apartment pre–fame and fortune in New York, and this lifelong relationship is one of the more intriguing, albeit unconfirmed, aspects of this documentary film. Grant and Orry-Kelly concurrently found success on Broadway, and eventually Hollywood beckoned them both.

Gillian Armstrong’s feature directorial debut, My Brilliant Career (1979), was an influential film from the Australian New Wave, and Women He’s Undressed is her first film in five-years. It is a true labor of love and homage to Orry-Kelly, whom Armstrong describes as “the Hugh Jackman of his day.” This film has it all: Hollywood glamour; insights from actors we know and love, as well as insiders we wish we knew; reflections from the descendants of legends from Hollywood’s Golden Age—including Jack Warner; and charming reenactments and other quirky storytelling techniques.
