The Ancients Few programs are as richly blessed with tradition as Tennessee. The men who made that tradition possible continue to grace the program with their unwavering support. The self-proclaimed “Ancients” are a group of former Vols brought back to the The Hill by the friendships developed at UT and their love for the program they helped create. The group draws its membership from Vols who competed in the late 1940s and early ‘50s. “This group has stayed together through friendship and commitment,” said Ancients member Frank Albertson, a three-time Vols letterwinner and the 1952 SEC cross country champion. “We are bonded through UT and track, but it is the friendships that have allowed us to stay together and keep in touch.” The Ancients have remained friends and supporters of UT for more than 50 years. The group gathers for a major meeting every other year, although smaller gatherings are also frequently put together. The Ancients have established the Alf Holmberg Scholarship in honor of the UT group member and the school’s first cross country All-American.
