This increased commitment to excellence in all facets of the program provided the framework that helped the Vols exceed expectations on the field in Dooley’s first season at the helm. Despite serving as the third head coach of the Tennessee football team in a 15-month period and competing roughly 15-20 scholarship players below the established scholarship limit of 85, Dooley led his first Vols squad to four consecutive November wins, an appearance in the Franklin American Mortgage Music City Bowl against North Carolina, and a 6-7 finish. Dooley was the head coach at Louisiana Tech during the 2007-09 seasons and also doubled as the school’s athletic director from 2008-09. As the head coach of the football team, Dooley’s tenure was highlighted by an 8-5 mark in 2008, including the school’s first postseason victory in 30 years at the Independence Bowl and only the third bowl game since 1989. Tennessee only made one coaching staff change after the 2010 season. In February, the Vols named Peter Sirmon as linebackers coach and moved Lance Thompson to defensive line coach, replacing Chuck Smith. Among all coaching staffs in Division I FBS, the Vols rank 11th in total NFL experience (coaching or playing) with 32 years. The UT staff also ranks 9th in NFL coaching experience at 23 years. Both totals rank second in the SEC, trailing only Florida. In terms of individual NFL coaching experience, only five college coaches have more NFL coaching experience than Tennessee associate head coach/ receivers coach Charlie Baggett, who coached in the league for 13 seasons.
