A TENNESSEE WIN WOULD...  Give Tennessee its first true road win of the season.  Give UT a 6-7 all-time record against teams ranked No. 12 in the AP poll.  Give the Vols a 6-7 all-time record against current members of the Missouri Valley Conference.  Give Cuonzo Martin a 7-9 head coaching record against AP top-25 teams (7-7 at Tennessee).

¢ This is the second of just five December games for the Vols. Four of those contests take place in Knoxville. This is the lone road game. ¢ During Cuonzo Martin’s three-year stint as head coach at Missouri State (2009-11), he faced Gregg Marshall’s Shockers twice each season. The Bears also faced WSU in the 2009 and 2010 MVC Tournaments. ¢ First-year Wichita State assistant coach Steve Forbes spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Tennessee (2006-2011). ¢ When these programs met last season, the Shockers entered the game with a 9-0 record, and the Vols dealt them their first loss of the year. WSU has never started a season 10-0. ¢ This marks the fourth straight season that Wichita State has hosted a game at INTRUST Bank Arena (capacity 15,000), defeating Tulsa, UAB and Southern Miss at this venue the last three years, respectively. ¢ WSU typically plays its home games at its oncampus facility, Charles Koch Arena (capacity 10,512). ¢ Tennessee is 0-1 all-time in games played in the state of Kansas. The Vols’ lone trip to the state resulted in a 92-85 loss to the Kansas Jayhawks in Lawrence, Kan., on Jan. 3, 2009. ¢ Only four teams in Division I average fewer turnovers per game than Tennessee (9.3 tpg). ¢ In Tennessee’s two losses this season, the Vols are shooting .517 from the foul line (30-of-58). In UT’s six wins, the Vols are shooting .737 (126of-171) at the charity stripe.

» Tennessee ranks 18th nationally in points per possession, at 1.2 ppp. That leads all SEC teams.

LAST TIME vs. WICHITA STATE

¢ Trae Golden (who has since transferred to Georgia Tech) scored 19 of his 25 points in the second half, Jordan McRae added 17 points and Tennessee fought off No. 23 Wichita State for a 69-60 home victory on Dec. 13, 2012. ¢ Golden led Tennessee with an inspired performance to hand Wichita State its first loss of the season. He had the best game of his career from the charity stripe, hitting 13-of-16. As a team, Tennessee was an outstanding 29-of-36 from the line. McRae had 17 big points off the bench and was a perfect 8-of-8 from the stripe. ¢ With UT trailing 50-46, McRae scored six straight points for Tennessee to push the Vols back in front. McRae’s free throws with 9:05 left tied the game at 50-50. His jumper at the 8:08 mark gave the Vols a 52-50 lead. ¢ The Shockers later responded with a 7-0 run. WSU pulled ahead, 59-58, when Carl Hall converted a layup and made a free throw with 3:55 left in the game. Tennessee climbed back in front, 61-59, just 45 seconds later after Kenny Hall made two free throws. Golden drained five

more free throws in the final three minutes of the game. Tennessee closed the game with an 11-1 run (all free throws) in the final 3:29 to secure the win. ¢ Carl Hall had 21 points and nine boards to lead WSU. No other Shocker scored in double figures.

TENNESSEE TECH RECAP

¢ Tennessee posted its second straight 20-point win by routing Tennessee Tech Saturday. ¢ Jarnell Stokes recorded his fourth straight double-double, totaling 19 points and 13 rebounds. ¢ Jordan McRae added 16 points, while Jeronne Maymon and Josh Richardson each added 13. ¢ Tennessee led 41-40 at halftime, as the Golden Eagles shot a blistering 8-for-10 from 3-point range through the first 20 minutes. ¢ After Tech scored to start the second half, the Vols put together a 22-1 run that ended all hopes of an upset by the Eagles. ¢ UT outscored the Eagles 48-26 in the paint, and the Vols committed only five turnovers. ¢ Tech was led by Jordan Johnson, who scored 15.

VOLS SHOCKED MARSHALL IN 2006

¢ Tennessee All-American guard Chris Lofton took that pass with 2.9 seconds left and rattled home a jumper barely inside the 3-point line to help the second-seeded Volunteers avoid a huge upset with a 63-61 victory over Winthrop in the first round of the 2006 NCAA Tournament in Greensboro, N.C., on March 16, 2006. ¢ The frantic finish capped a heart-pounding game that featured nine ties and eight lead changes, the final one coming on Lofton’s shot. His were the only points in the final 2:42 as both teams squandered possessions late in the game. ¢ Gregg Marshall was the Winthrop head coach. That loss ended the Eagles’ season at 23-8, and Marshall left after the following year to take the Wichita State job. ¢ Tennessee’s opponent in the second round of that 2006 NCAA Tournament? Wichita State.

McRAE NEARING 1,000-POINT CLUB

¢ Senior wing Jordan McRae needs just 21 points to become the 45th all-time member of Tennessee’s 1,000-Point Club. ¢ McRae’s career points total ranks third among active SEC players. Only Trevor Releford (Alabama) and Andre Stringer (LSU) have scored more.

UT ONE OF NATION’S TOP OFFENSIVE REBOUNDING TEAMS

¢ Tennessee ranks second nationally in offensive rebounding percentage (.453). ¢ The Vols rank sixth nationally and first in the SEC in offensive rebounds per game (16.3). ¢ Jeronne Maymon and Jarnell Stokes combine to average 7.6 orpg. ¢ Stokes ranks second in the SEC in offensive rebounding (4.1 orpg), while Maymon ranks seventh (3.5 orpg). ¢ Tennessee leads the SEC in rebounding defense, allowing opponents to grab just 29.3 rpg.

THOMPSON FIT FOR DUTY

¢ True freshman Darius Thompson is averaging 18.1 minutes per game and is performing well in his role as UT’s backup point guard. ¢ Thompson leads the team in assists (16, 2.3 apg) and steals (14, 1.8 spg) and has only five turnovers in 145 total minutes played. ¢ His assist/turnover ratio stands at 3.6. ¢ Cuonzo Martin has tinkered with a lineup that features both Thompson and starting point guard Antonio Barton the past three weeks.

¢ UT commits 18.4 fouls per game this season. Last season (before the new contact rules), the Vols averaged 18.1 fouls per game. ¢ Where the difference can be seen this season is in the amount of free throws Tennessee attempts per game. The Vols are shooting 28.6 FTpg, whereas last season they shot 22.4 FTpg.

SCORING BREAKDOWN BY CLASS ¢ Contributions by Class Points

¢ Tennessee posted a 2-1 record and a fifth-place finish at the 2013 Battle 4 Atlantis tournament in Paradise Island, Bahamas Nov. 28-30. ¢ The Vols fell to UTEP in the opening round before notching dominant wins over Xavier and Wake Forest. ¢ UT played three games in three days, and forward Jarnell Stokes logged three straight double-doubles, averaging 18.0 points and 11.3 rebounds at the event.

RANKED TEAMS, FUTURE PROS AWAIT

¢ Tennessee’s remaining schedule features six games against teams that appear in this week’s AP top-25 poll. ¢ Those teams are: No. 11 Kentucky, No. 12 Wichita State, No. 19 Florida (2x) and No. 24 Missouri (2x). ¢ According to DraftExpress.com, UT will face 11 players this season who are projected to be selected in June’s NBA Draft (seven first-rounders).

¢ Tennessee will join Georgia Tech, Kansas, Marquette, Michigan State, Rider, Santa Clara and Xavier in next year’s Old Spice Classic field. ¢ The tournament runs Nov. 27-30 at HP Field House at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex near Orlando, Fla. ¢ The Vols lost to Gonzaga in the championship game of the 2008 Old Spice Classic.

¢ After redshirting all of last season due to a knee injury, All-SEC forward Jeronne Maymon has returned to action this season. ¢ Maymon is averaging 10.0 ppg and 7.6 rpg. He is also attacking the offensive glass, averaging 3.5 orpg. ¢ Tennessee’s team MVP in 2011-12, Maymon led the Vols in scoring (14.2 ppg) and rebounding (7.9 rpg) in SEC play as a junior. ¢ He scored at least 12 points in every SEC game and also led the league in free-throw attempts during the regular season (184). ¢ Maymon’s absence last season allowed teams to double-team power forward Jarnell Stokes.

STOKES HAS 23 DOUBLE-DOUBLES

¢ Junior Jarnell Stokes has 23 double-doubles during his UT career (58 games). That leads all active players in the SEC. ¢ He has posted a double-double in 40 percent of his college games. ¢ Stokes’ 16 double-doubles last year were the most in the SEC and the most by a Vol in a season since Bernard King had 22 in 1976-77.

VOLS HAVE NO TROUBLE LOGGING DOUBLE-DOUBLES ¢ Three players on the Tennessee roster collectively boast 34 career double-doubles. ¢ Jarnell Stokes is UT’s active career leader with 23 double-doubles to his credit. His 16 double-doubles last season rank tied for eighth on Tennessee’s single-season list. ¢ Redshirt senior Jeronne Maymon has 10 career double-doubles. ¢ Senior wing Jordan McRae has one career double-double. He totaled 14 points and 11 rebounds in last season’s win at Vanderbilt.

REBOUNDING RECORDS REVOLUTION

¢ Tennessee’s frontcourt tandem of Jeronne Maymon and Jarnell Stokes is rewriting Tennessee’s offensive rebounding records. ¢ Stokes averages 3.71 orpg during his career, while Maymon has a UT career average of 2.65 orpg. If their career averages improve or stand firm, they will rank first and second, respectively, on UT’s all-time list. Former Vol C.J. Black currently stands atop Tennessee’s career list with 2.47 orpg from 1996-2000. ¢ Since offensive rebounding statistics have been recorded (1996-97) there have been only two players in Tennessee history to grab 10 or more offensive boards in a single game. Stokes hauled in 12 last season vs. Mercer, and Maymon totaled 10 against Ole Miss in the 2012 SEC Tournament. ¢ Stokes averaged 4.18 orpg as a sophomore last season. That is the best single-season mark in program history.

MARTIN’S PROGRAM MANTRA: #TOUGHERBREED ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE ¢ The Tennessee basketball team’s performance in the classroom has improved dramatically since head coach Cuonzo Martin’s arrival on Rocky Top. There have been several noteworthy highlights. ¢ When the NCAA released its most recent Academic Progress Rate (APR) data in June 2013, the basketball program’s multi-year score of 973 was its best ever. ¢ Martin has been at the helm for each of the program’s two best multi-year APR scores ever (961 in 2012, 973 in 2013). ¢ The program’s 2.63 team GPA for the Spring 2013 semester was its best since the data started being recorded in 2003. ¢ In Martin’s two years at Tennessee, every outgoing senior has received his degree. ¢ A total of 21 Tennessee men’s basketball players have graduated in the last five years. Those players are: Josh Bone, Quinn Cannington, Ryan Childress, Wayne Chism, John Fields, Melvin Goins, Kenny Hall, Tony Harris, Michael Hubert, Justin Jackson, Chris Lofton, Skylar McBee, Dwight Miller, Rob Murphy, Steven Pearl, J.P. Prince, Tyler Summitt, Cameron Tatum, C.J. Watson, Tanner Wild and Renaldo Woolridge. ¢ Of those 21 graduates in the last five years, 10 went on to sign professional basketball contracts and two have gone into coaching.

EMPHASIS OF THE DAY ¢ Prior to every Tennessee practice, Cuonzo Martin gathers the Vols at midcourt and discusses the “Emphasis of the Day.” ¢ The Emphasis of the Day rarely focuses on basketball-specific skills or strategy, as Martin typically uses it as a vehicle for character building and personal development. As such, it has become something that the members of the team look forward to each day. ¢ Martin typically begins by reading that day’s “emphasis” aloud. He then asks one or two players to read it aloud before opening a team-wide discussion during which different team members are asked to interpret the meaning in their own words. ¢ “Everyday when coach gives the guys the emphasis of the day, it’s something that really makes them think and become closer as a team,” associate head coach Tracy Webster said. “A lot of times, the things that he says really hit home with the guys. It can be about family life, it can be a scripture, it can be a quote from someone, but it’s all geared around `team.’ ¢ Added Webster: “If the guys are having a hard time understanding the message, he breaks it down for them and makes sure that they do. It’s kind of like prayer before a meal. It’s to help you get off to a good start. ¢ A few examples:  When someone does well, we all do well. When someone makes a mistake, we all make the mistake. Let’s figure out the best way to constructively help each other.  When we are reliable, others know that they can depend on us. They know that we will make the effort to do our best, whatever the situation might be. They know we won’t run, cower or become paralyzed by fear.

Tennessee head coach Cuonzo Martin introduced a new program slogan this season: A Tougher Breed. “Toughness has got to be what we are as a program. That’s our brand, our way of life,” Martin said. So the Vols embody that “tougher breed” approach in all they do. Their workouts, which oftentimes begin long before sunrise. The standards to which coaches hold players and players hold each other. It can hardly be surprising that Tennessee also employs some boxing workouts from time to time, or that the Vols are embracing their lacing up the sneakers like a pugilist tying on gloves. They proudly wear T-shirts with orange boxing gloves that read “Let’s Rumble.” “That came from the coaching staff. We’ve done boxing workouts as a team. It just shows our toughness and our tenacity,” senior forward Jeronne Maymon explained. “How we get after things. Especially on the court, we’re always pushing and shoving each other and testing our brothers on the practice court. The sport of boxing is a good translation to what we do in practice and the weight room and other things in life. “It would be hard to find a tougher team in America than the University of Tennessee men’s basketball program. That’s what we hang our hat on. You’ve got to find something to hang your hat on, and we hang our hat on toughness.” Proof of said toughness is undeniable across Martin’s first two campaigns in Knoxville; his teams held foes to fewer than 65 points per game both seasons and also ranked second each year in the SEC in rebounding margin. “Coach Martin has a very steady personality. He doesn’t waver. You always know what you’re going to get, so I think that’s what really keeps us on balance,” said Maymon. “So if (coach’s) personality wavered and sometimes he was happy and sometimes he was sad and he made us do drills off his emotions, then we’d be unbalanced. But he’s very stable, and we know what we’re getting and what we’re getting into every day. So it’s pretty easy for us to adapt to his personality. Martin now knows without a doubt this Tennessee team wants to earn and desperately craves the opportunity to proclaim and wear that label of toughness. “The one thing about it, every guy wants to be considered tough; they like the results behind it on the floor but also the stuff we do in the weight room,” Martin said. “Guys love to have a level of toughness, like the shirts we’ve got with the boxing gloves and ’Let’s rumble.’ We enjoy that, we embrace that. We want to be as tough as we can be on the basketball floor and as nice as we can be off the basketball floor.”

“Toughness has got to be what we are as a program. That’s our brand, our way of life.” — Cuonzo Martin

VOLS IN THE NBA ¢ Former Vol Tobias Harris (2011) was traded from Milwaukee to Orlando in February. As a starter for the Magic last year, he averaged 17.3 points and 8.5 rebounds in 36 minutes per game.

¢ Veteran NBA point guard C.J. Watson (2003-06) enters his seveth NBA season with a new team: the Indiana Pacers. Through his first six seasons, Watson averaged 7.6 points and 2.5 assists per game.

¢ Vol legends Ernie Grunfeld (1974-77) and Allan Houston (1990-93) each hold NBA front-office titles. Grunfeld is in his 11th year as president of the Wizards, and Houston is the assistant general manager of the New York Knicks.

QUICK DEFENSIVE NOTES

¢ Tennessee has held one opponent to fewer than 50 points this season (Xavier, 49 on Nov. 29). ¢ Tennessee held projected 2014 first-round NBA draft pick Semaj Christon of Xavier to just four points in UT’s 64-49 dismantling of the Musketeers at the Battle 4 Atlantis (11/29/13). Christon also finished with no rebounds, one assist and two turnovers in 24 minutes of action. ¢ In Tennessee's three games against Xavier dating to last season, the Vols held Christon to an average of 9.0 points per game and forced him to commit a total of 10 turnovers. ¢ In that Nov. 29 win over Xavier, the Vols held the Muskies scoreless for seperate spans of 4:33 and 3:57. ¢ Freshman guard Darius Thompson recorded a season-high five steals against Tennessee State (11/22/13). It was the most steals by a UT freshman since current Orlando Magic forward Tobias Harris logged five in a game in 2011. ¢ In their win over Tennessee Tech (12/7/13), the Vols limited the Golden Eagles to just six points in the first 10 minutes of the second half. ¢ UT’s opponents suffered through six scoreless droughts of at least six minutes last season (Vanderbilt 6:47, Virginia 6:41, Georgetown 6:23, Kennesaw State 6:20, Oakland 6:10, Xavier 6:01).

SACRIFICING THE BODY FOR THE TEAM

¢ As a team, Tennessee took 52 charges last year (1.6 per game). ¢ 11 different Vols drew charges last season. ¢ This season, Tennessee has drawn just two charges through eight games. Given the changes in how officials are instructed to make the block/charge call, this decline was to be expected.

BACKCOURT BLOCK PARTY

¢ The players on Tennessee’s roster combine to boast 245 blocks. ¢ Interestingly, more than 65 percent of those blocks (161 of 245) are by guards. ¢ The Vols’ backcourt blocks leaders are senior Jordan McRae and junior Josh Richardson, who own 67 and 47 career blocks, respectively. ¢ Tennessee’s guards accounted for 55.4 percent of the team’s blocked shots last year (72 of 130).

ACTIVE HANDS

¢ The Vols track the number of pass deflections they record every game. They average 14.4 deflections per game this season (115 total). ¢ Tennessee has had at least 10 deflections in all but one of its games this season. ¢ Those who attend a Tennessee basketball game in person are sure to hear Cuonzo Martin’s repetitive yell of, “Haaands!” whenever the Vols are on defense.

MARTIN HAS HISTORY WITH DEFENSIVE STOPPERS

¢ During Cuonzo Martin’s assistant/associate head coaching tenure at Purdue from 2000-08, the Boilermakers produced three Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honorees. ¢ Guard Kenneth Lowe won the award in both 2003 and 2004, and guard Chris Kramer captured the honor in 2008. ¢ And in 2011, which was Martin’s third and final season as head coach at Missouri State, he coached Jermaine Mallett to a spot on the MVC All-Defense Team.

DE-FENSE! DE-FENSE!

VOLS HELD FOUR STRAIGHT UNDER 60

¢ Last season, from Nov. 26 through Dec. 13, 2012, Tennessee held four straight opponents to 60 points or less, tying for the program’s longest such streak in the shot-clock era. ¢ The Vols’ streak came against: Oakland (50), No. 20 Georgetown (37), Virginia (46) and No. 23 Wichita State (60). UT went 2-2 during that stretch, while its opponents averaged 48.3 ppg. ¢ In 1995-96, UT went 3-1 during a similar fourgame streak, and the Big Orange also put together a four-game streak in 1985-86 while going 4-0. ¢ Tennessee held 13 teams to fewer than 60 points last season, including eight SEC foes.

TENNESSEE KEEPS IT UNDER 70

¢ The Volunteers have held 32 of their last 41 opponents to fewer than 70 points, dating to last season. ¢ Only one Tennessee opponent has scored more than 67 points against the Vols this season (UTEP, 78). ¢ Tennessee had a streak of 32 straight regularseason games in which no opponent scored more than 70 points until Memphis finally broke that barrier last season on Jan. 4, 2013.

STARTING STRONG

¢ In 37 of the 75 games UT has played under head coach Cuonzo Martin, the Vols have held teams the opponent to fewer than 30 first-half points.

TIME’S UP!

¢ Tennessee has forced three 5-second calls this season (including one for on-ball pressure in the open court). ¢ UT has forced three shot-clock violations thus far.

HOME CROWDS OF 20,000+ NOTHING NEW FOR VOLS

¢ Tennessee has played in front of 50 home crowds larger than 20,000 dating to the 200506 season. ¢ The crowd of 22,326 for the 2009 Gonzaga game was the largest at Thompson-Boling Arena since capacity was reduced from 24,535 to 21,678 prior to the 2007-08 campaign. ¢ Tennessee also has hosted ESPN College GameDay twice in the last six years.

$40 MILLION COMMITMENT Hoops a Priority on Rocky Top

The University of Tennessee has invested more than $40 million into its basketball facilities since the end of the 2006-07 campaign. Prior to the 2007-08 season, UT added a basketball-only practice facility and began the first phase of renovations to Thompson-Boling Arena. The $19 million first phase of renovations included the addition of 32 luxury suites that are located in the existing north balcony, a loge area just below the luxury suites that includes 166 side court seats, new seats for the entire arena, a $3 million center-hung scoreboard and concourse refurbishments, such as graphics and other amenities. The Vols’ state-of-the-art basketball practice facility, Pratt Pavilion, houses two full-size gymnasiums, one for each of the men’s and women’s basketball teams, as well as an athletic training room, weight room and film-study room. The athletic department renovated the men’s and women’s basketball offices at the arena during the 2010-11 campaign, creating a new and impressive “front door” for the basketball programs. And new to Thompson-Boling Arena last year was the 360-degree LED ribbon board that runs along the bottom of the upper deck.

It’s so much MORE than just winning ballgames. “Eventually this ball will stop bouncing. So I’ve got to help you find your way in life. And I want you to walk with your head held high and your chest out because you’re a man.” - Cuonzo Martin DEVELOPING WELL-ROUNDED YOUNG MEN

¢ Cuonzo Martin is genuinely just as passionate about the development of his players off the court as he is about their athletic development. As such, he brings in speakers and presenters to conduct year-round seminars that educate the team on topics that will benefit them later in life. ¢ Guest speakers and team seminars have focused on topics such as “Dressing for Success,” AIDS awareness, credit score education, how to keep a budget, balance a checkbook and more. ¢ Director of Basketball Operations Marco Harris oversees the team’s community outreach efforts. The team has visited patients at UT Medical Center and St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and also has assisted with Habitat for Humanity building projects (2011 and 2012), Race for the Cure and several other events.

PERSONAL BRANDING THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA

¢ Rather than banning his players from using various social media services, Cuonzo Martin believes in educating them on how to effectively use social media as a positive personal branding tool. ¢ In the summer of 2012, a national Yahoo! Sports article touted Tennessee basketball as a program that takes a “more progressive approach to social media than its peers.”

MEN’S HOOPS HAS WON FOUR OF UT’s LAST SEVEN COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARDS

¢ The Tennessee men’s basketball team has won four of the last seven Men’s Community Service Team of the Year Awards, presented annually at the “Volscars” ceremony. ¢ The Volscars (wordplay on “Oscars”) is UT’s annual year-end athletic awards show.
