PRESIDENT

JONES

I believe that the real test of the education of a man or woman is not so much the knowledge gained or skills acquired as the willingness and ability to use one's knowledge or skills for the improvement of society. If the quality and the amount of service are the chief criteria of an educat~d man, it is evident that only a part of those who receive titles, degrees, or scholastic honors are really educated. The success and worth of Carbon College will be great to the extent that its students will contribute while here, and later become contributors, to the well -being of their communities, their state, their nation, and to the world. I know that many of our students are bringing, and will continue to bring, honor and glory to this school. It is my sincere hope that every student who comes to Carbon College wil1 be equipped and inspired to do his full part to bring credit to himself as an educated person and to earn high esteem for Carbon College. LAFAYETTE BROWN President

GRANT FAUSETT Vice-President

As the biggest sophomore class at Carbon College thus far, we hope we shall have been a forecast of even larger classes to come. This year has been a busy one, as wen it should have been, and leaves with us many warm and pleasant memories . . . Memories of the things we've done, the things we've said, the things we've thought of and hoped for .. . Memories of our dreams for the future, of our aims and achievements, of idle, play-filled hours. Memories of "cram packed" hours, of chit chat in the halls. Memories of standing in the eternal chow line , of brisk football games and magic formal dances. Memories of all the little things that make the whole, the memory itself.

ALICE ARNETT Secretary-Treasurer

This memory we'll always have, the memory of this last year at Carbon College - our Carbon College.

Greenies? Well maybe so, for we did have a hard time getting acquainted with all the new faces, and our first experience of paying to learn . Anyhow there were lots of us -=- more than ever before . We had a few "daze" of trying to remember class schedules, col'lege ethics, and "adult manners ." But Frosh Week helped break the ice, even if the beanies did "flub up the deal:" Our first function as a class was treating the sophomores to a party , and fun 'twas, too. Granted , we did have a secret dread of college classes, but we're on to them now, and don't worry much, except the night before quarter exams. So we have learned, and are looking forward to learning more, much more , as we look to the future, and our next year at Car bon Junior College.

'14 "Class of '50" sure sounds good to us. Yep, we finally made it, and somehow it seems too soon when it comes right down to being the end. But all good things must come to an end, they say, and this last year of our high-school days has really been everything good. Perhaps we're being a trifle nostalgic, and a litrle sentimental too. But who has a better right to be so? Maybe we're even a wee bit fri~htened at the thought of "what now:" even thotH!h most of us have some plan for the future in mind. And when we stop to reminisce a bit, we'll a1ways think of our sen :or year as "the best ever."

Here we are, 284 strong-, the youngest, most bewildered and energetic bunch in the whole school. Sure, we started off with a bang, and kept it up, too. Isn't that the way Juniors are expected to do? Aren't we expected to put new life into an old school, vigorous new ideas, new strength, new progress? Well, we tried, and we hope we have succeeded in doing just that. We hope we have 'left this year a foretaste of things to come - participation in all school doings, and especially are we proud of our Junior Prom. We have truly tried and surely succeeded in helping to make this "our school."

"The Carbonicle" as an institution survived another year as reporter of affairs pertaining to school, as a promoter of school spirit, as a regularly-functioning publication, and as a source of entertainment on "thank goodness it's Friday" day. Survived, we say, because the old bu ~aboo, lack of sufficient funds to see it entirely through, was again the prevailing kill-joy. But minor difficulties of that sort only went to make the project more challenging and more interesting. So the Carbonicle came through weekly most of the year and bi-monthly from necessity and popular opinion during the spring quarter. We can sincerely say, as its editors and staff, it has been good experience and fun to boot!

Carbon College Golden Eagles showed enthusiastic football fans that they had the fight and spirit necessary to make a great team when they came from behind in the last seconds of the first game on the new athletic field to defeat the Mesa Mavericks 14-12. The Eagles then went on to gain victories over Snow College, Westminster, Fort Lewis, B.A.C., and Mesa again.

/

The squad, coached by Jackson Jewkes. and led by co-captains Shoro Budo and Steve Milovich, played its best game battling the league champs, the Boise Broncs, to the last gun, but losing 19-7.

-)

Carbon's injury-plagued team members lost to S. I. C. E. and to Weber, but even in defeat they brought praise and credit to Carbon College.

The Carbon High Dinosaurs again fielded a powerful grid squad under the guid ance of Pr es Summerhays. Th e Blue and White squad lost their hopes for a repeat at the state title when they dropped their first two games to Ogden and Gr and Junction, but they showed a ma stery of football technique equal to an y team in the state later in the season as they downed Weber , Tooele, and North Cache. In a game notable for its low score, the Din os defeat ed Logan 2-0 by a safety on a mud-c overed field . The Carbon boys again showed th eir stren gth as they gained a victory over Lincoln, and completel y outcla ssed a lar ger Granite squad to end a successful season . The lar ge number of Juniors on thi s year's squad indicates that Carbon should fare well in the "Big Eight" next year.

Coach Jackson Jewkes' Golden Eagle cagers brought much recognition and honor to Carbon College this year as they won the lntermountain College Athletic Conference Southern Division championship. This is the first basketball crown of any kind that has been won by a Carbon team, and the school has much pride in this team. Although the "Champs" won the Southern Division crown, the Eagles showed their greatest fight and determination as they dropped a heartbreaking two out of three game championship to Weber College . Led by All-Conference center Tom Steele , who captur ed every conference scoring record but one, the Eagles showed the fight, spirit, and scoring punch of a championship team. Two other Eagle players, Daryl Nord and Geary l\1cCandless, also gained All-Conference recognition. JACKSO:--J JEWKES Coach

DEDJe;r fJD1l September 16, 1949, a memorable day for Carbon College, marked the date of the dedication of the new $44,000 athletic field. Among the honored guests pre sent were F. L. Wilkenson, representative of Governor J. Bracken Lee , and E. Allen Bateman , State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The field was dedicated as "Carbon College Stadium" by Enid Seaton who was crowned Dedication Queen by Superinten-, dent Bateman during impressive halftime activities. Chosen to reign with Queen Enid were her attendants, La Vae DeAngeles and Charmaine Hill. The closing minutes of the football game proved to be tense, but the Carbon Golden Eagles dedicated their field with a "first-game" victory.

Carbon College students celebrated the annual Snow Carnival this year by choosing Betty Lou Allred as their Snow Queen, and by enthusiastically supporting the varied activities during the Carnival. A skating party was held Thursday, January 26, and afterwards, chili was served at the cafeteria. After the basketball game between Carbon High and American Fork, the students enjoyed the Snow Ball. Because the weatherman and the Ski Club couldn't get together, the actual competition didn't take place on January 29 as planned, but was carried out a few weeks later.

BETTY JO BECK , BETTY LOU ALLRED, DONNA EASTO , BETH FRANDSEN , WELLS WAKEFIELD, CARA REDD, NELIA PETITTI, DOROTHY HARDEE The Carbon College speech <lepartment not only traveled more extensively this year than ever before , but als.o brought home more honors and more experience than heretofore. The year began with a practice contest, which was returned later at Carbon, with the students of Brigham Young University . Shortly afterwards, a group of six fellows made a trip to Logan, Utah, to engage in debate with members of other colleges of Utah. Returning home with a split record , this group , along with the entire speech department, went to Branch Agricultural College to participate in the lntermountain College Forensic Tournament. There, at Cedar City, Utah, members of our squad won second place honors in debate and radio plays. One week later, six fellows journeyed to Pasadena, California , where they engaged in the California Institute of Techn ology Invitational Debate Tournament. This tournament seemingly taught the debaters how to influence California and out-of-state judges , for approximately one month later, after a very eventful hike to the National Phi Rho Pi Tournament in Bakersfield, California, four debaters managed to procure the fifth place in over-all team points, while two of these, Tom Bithell and Nick Nikas, won second place national debate. Tom Bithell also cornered a third place tie in impromptu speaking. The gentleman who is held accountable for the success of these fellows is Mr . George Morgan, while Mr. J. Nile Washburn and Mr. Aaron A. Roylance receive credit for the excellent coaching of the other participants. Ever looking to future honors, we can truthfully say that the year 1949-50 in the history of the speech department of Carbon College started the inevitable climb to greater success .

In spite of the fact that the High School Speech department has withdrawn from the High School Activities Association, the speech students have had a successful year. The debaters participated in three tournament debate contests and in one day of practice debate . The speech students attended two speech tournaments during the year. Carbon received a visit from the Brigham Young University debaters, returning a trip made by the college debaters early in the year. The high school debaters participated in this practice tournament and gained much valued experience . On the second week in February, the speech students accompanied the college speech squad to the Inter-Mountain College Forensic Tournament at Cedar City. Even though they were competing against students with greater experience, their record was admirable. A week later one high school team attended the California Institute of Technology Invitational Debate Tournament with the college teams. They met teams from Stanford,, Pasadena, Los Angeles, and other California schools. Shortly after the California trip, the high school speech students traveled to Weber for the annual Weber speech meet. The high school speech students owe their ability to their able advisers, George C. Morgan in debate, and J. Nile Washburn and Aaron A. Roylance in speech.
