Utah State Engineering Graduates in the Development of the West

Graduates from the School of Engineering at the Utah State Agricultural College are now occupying important positions in the United States Bureau of Reclamation.

This department of the Federal Government is responsible for the design and construction of irrigation works and large darns and power plants throughout the United States. A recent investigation found twenty-three graduates of the Utah State Agricultural College employed in the Denver offices and laboratories of the United States Bureau of Reclamation.

The oldest engineering graduate is Mr. Virgil L. Minear, who graduated from the school of general sciences in 1913 and from the University of Wisconsin in Civil Engineering in 1923 and became an associate member, A.S.C.E. in 1930. Mr. Minear's activities and experiences since leaving the College read like a story book. From 1914 to 1917 he taught school in Idaho and Wyoming; 1917 to 1919 he served in the army as Captain of field artillery spending nine months of this time at the front in France and Germany. From 1920 to 1923 he attended the Universities of Idah o and Wisconsin and in 1923 began his long period of service with the U.S .B.R. as junior engineer, Bureau of Reclamation at the American Fall dam in Idaho. In 1926 he went to Mexico as a Hydrographer and a year later was field engineer in Spanish Honduras in charge of irrigation, drainage, R. R. location and construction. From 1929 to 1931 he served a chief engineer and superintendent of construction in the Republics of Guatemala and E l Salvador, C. A. in charge of hydro-electric, municipal and highway engineering.

At the present time, Mr. Minear is associate engineer with the Bureau of Reclamation working out of the Denver ().ffice. Here his work consists of the preparation ()f articles for publication by the A.S. J ohn Randolph Riter, engineer, graduated from the College in 1926 in Geology and in 1927 in Engineering.

He worked six months for the U . S. Coast and Geodetic Survey and was transferred to the Bureau of Reclamation in Apri l, 1928. He is at present principal office assistant to the Hydraulic Engineer in charge of field and hydrological investigations and water supply studies at the Denver office.

James Wayne Cahoon, junior engineer, class of 1935, is permanently employed at the Denver office with the Bureau of Reclamation in the division of water resources.

NATURAL HISTORY FIELD EXPEDITION

Geology Department The 4th annual Natural History Field Expedition conducted by the natural science departments at the Utah State Agricultural College came to a successful close last Sunday evening when the forty-one members of this year's party arrived back in Logan after a nine-day trip of some 1700 miles in four states. The party traveled to Needles, California, by way of Boulder Dam, and return¡ ed to Utah via Lehman Caves, Nevada. In addition to the actual observation and instruction accomplished in the field, the expedition brought back to the permanent collections of the College 800 plant specimens, 200 specimens of fossils, rocks and ores, and numerous skulls and skins for the Wild Life Department. Plankton samples were taken from several rock tanks in the desert ranges and from Mead Lake.

After visiting Silver Reef, Utah, and collecting plants in that vicinity, the expedition moved into the Valley of Fire, Nevada, stopping at the ruins of Lost City enroute.

A day later it moved on to Boulder Dam, and thence to Chloride, Arizona, where the Tennessee-Schuylkill mine was visited. At Kingman, Professor A. A. Nicholl, Professor of Game Management at the University of Arizona, joined the party. For two days he accompanied the group in the field and gave talks upon the problems of wild life management in Arizona. The special truck in which Professor Nicholl traveled proved of particular interest to the students from the Utah School. Equipped with every appliance for safe and comfortable travel in either the low desert valleys or high mountainous plateaus of Arizona, it included also special equipment to aid in the observation of game in its native haunts.

While the geology students in the expedition visited the gold mines at Oatman, Arizona, the botanists found excellent collecting in that vicinity, due to the unusually heavy precipitation of last winter.

At Needles where the Colorado River was recrossed, the party experienced mid-summer temperatures, which were to be followed, a day later, by freezing temperatures at Lehman Caves, Nevada. On the return through the vicinity of Las Vegas the geology party visited Gyp¡ sum Cave, where the Southwestern Museum and the California Institution of Technology have made important finds of recently extinct animals and some traces of early man.

From Glendale, Nevada, the expedition turned northward to Caliente. Here it was joined by Mr. S. D. Warner, of the Forest Service. These men accompanied the party into Utah, and gave instruction in the range management problems of the West Desert.

At Lehman Cave members of the party were special guests of Mr. Ted Thatcher, a graduate of Utah State who is now in charge of the Lehman Cave, National Monument. Excellent pictures were obtained in these beautiful but comparatively little known caverns. The return to Logan was made through Delta and Tooele.

Throughout the trip Professor D. W. Pittman of the Soils Department instructed the group upon the relationship of soils to the plant cover and erosion problems.

Professor Bassett Maguire, leader of the expedition, and Professor R. S. Snell of the Botany Department, were in charge of the botanical work.

Mr. E. N. Larson, Instructor in Biology at South Cache High School accompanied the expedition and made a collection of desert reptiles. Mr. 0. W. Cooley of Hyrum was in charge of the commissary. Mr. Grant Nielson of Brigham City was in charge of transportation.

Shaving was not allowed on the trip, and Sunday evening in Salt Lake City, at the final dinner of the expedition, Professor Hoyt won a prize for having grown the best beard.

NINTH ANNUAL BAND TOUR Concluding the ninth annual concert tour, the 80-piece concert band of the College under the direction of Prof.

Accompanied by Ted Karren, president of the student body organization, and the Misses Leah and Rhea Lewis, twin band sponsors, the group left Logan Monday morning, March 29, to present concerts in various northern Utah communities.

Jay Anderson, flute, and Wayne Johnson, bassoon, both of Brigham City; Dorothy Montrose, piano, and Ollie Jean Olson, violin, both of Logan; and J. Mack Rasband, trombone, of Heber City, were presented in the various concerts as soloists.

Concert programs were presented in Morgan, Coalville, Park City, Heber City, Pleasant Grove, Oram, Springville, Spanish Fork, Payson, Murray, Kaysville, and Ogden. Most of the concerts were presented at the high schools in the respective communities for students, although public concerts conducted in Ogden were held before the Weber College student body.

Profesor Christiansen stated upon his return that the ninth annual concert tour of the college band was instrumental in promoting deeper enthusiasm and appreciation for good music. A remarkable degree of interest and friendliness toward the college was demonstrated in every community visited by the band.

TOMATO DISEASE INVESTIGATIONS AT THE UTAH STATE AGRICULTURAL EXPERIMENT STAT ION

The following article obtained in an interview with Dr. H. Loran Blood sets forth one of the phases of the battle which the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station is waging against crop diseases in Utab and the nation at large.

Dr. Blood is plant pathologist on the Experiment Station staff at the College, and Plant Pathologist, Division of Horticultural Crops and Diseases, Bureau of Plant Industry, U. S. Department of Agriculture. He has done research work of a momentou_s nature in the field of tomato diseases, his most noteworthy achievement being the development of a method of control for bacterial canker, which disease was causing an approximate loss of $225,000.00 annually. Dr. Blood received the "hunch" for his fermentation process method of control while. doing res~arch fo~ his doctor!ite and later did the actual work m connection and m cooperation with the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station.

Four diseases of the tomato are responsible for an annual loss to the farmers and processors of the State of Utah ranging from a few hundred thousand to appro~i­ mately two million dollars depending upon the seventy of the respective diseases. Inasmuch as the farmers' costs of production and the processors' o¡v erhead charges are constant charges, the major portion of these losses represent a direct cut on the profits and a loss to labor.

CuRLY ToP The most important of the four diseases is a virus disease known as " curly top" or Western Yellow Blight.

This disease is the same as curly top of the sugarbeet and is disseminated among tomatoes by the best leaf hopper (Eutettix tenellus) . Fortunately the disease does not develop in epidemic form every year. When it does assume epidemic proportions, it is responsible for losses to the tomato industry (farmer and processor) of the state that have often approached two million dollars. Epidemics of this disease occurred in 1930, 1931, 1934 and 1935, and mild attacks occurred in 1933 and 1936 with almost disastrous results to the tomato industry. Several of the best tomato producing districts of the State have virtually abandoned the crop. Farmers cannot run the risk of producing tomatoes with the perpetual threat of curly top facing them and the canners cannot afford to pay enough for tomatoes to make it attractive enough for the farmers to risk the destruction of the crop by the disease and compete with eastern processors. As a result, the Tomato Canning Industry is threatened with distaster in the same manner and from the same disease as the sugar companies before 1930. The sugar industry of the West was saved by the development of a sugar beet that would resist curly top and produce a splendid crop in the presence of large populations of the curly top insect vector, Eutettix tenellus.

In cooperation with the U. S. Department of Agriculture, the Utah Canners Association, and Utah State Farm Bureau, a concerted effort is being made to develop or discover a tomato that will resist the disease and make possible the culture of the crop ~ven thou_gh ~e vi~us which causes the disease and the msect which dissemmates the virus are prevalent. It so happens that the insect responsible for the wide spread distribution of the disease is a native insect which breeds freely and naturally over the wide expanses of the surrounding desert with the result that methods designed to control the insect a~e very difficult and costly to apply. While it is admitted that such a thing is possible, the conviction is held by most research workers that the development or the dis-

covery of a resistant tomato would be the most practical and economical way to control the disease.

Trial grounds are maintained in Hurricane, Utah, in the heart of the southern beet leaf hopper breeding area, where approximately 60,000 tomato plants are planted every year and subjected to the feeding of large populations of the insect that carries the virus for the purpose of discovering, if possible, a tomato that will resist the disease. Selections are made from the plants that do not develop the disease for replanting on the grounds the following year to obtain a record of the degree of resistance possessed by the surviving plants. All the commercial varieties of tomato have been tested in this manner and none have exhibited any resistance to the disease.

In addition to the commercial varieties, about thirty different sorts of wild tomato representing four different species have been tested for resistance to the disease.

The most impressive degree of resistance found so far is possessed by selections from the wild sorts although it is not as impressive as we hope to obtain. Selections of the wild sorts that exhibit resistance are being hybridized with others of different type with the hope that by a recombination of genetic factors an intensification of the expression of resistance might be realized. Heat, X-Ray and callous formation treatments are being used upon selections of the most resistant material in an effort to induce polypoidy or mutations that will emphasize the resistant character. Progeny of all such material is being tested on the Hurricane Trial Grounds. It is felt that the degree of resistance possessed by certain of the wild selections being worked upon is sufficient to constitute a nucleus amund which an intensification of the investigations may be made with the hope that withiii due time the problem may be solved, and the monetary loss now attributable to the disease saved to the society of the State.

BACTERIAL CANKER

The next most serious tomato disease which threatened the Utah tomato crop a few years ago and which caused an approximate loss of $225,000.00 a year for a number of years has been reduced to one of the very minor diseases of the tomato over the entire nation. In 1930 bacterial canker was considered by U. S. Department of Agriculture, Horticulturists and Pathologists as potentially the most dangerous tomato disease prevailing on the American Continent. Annual losses from the disease reached well over the million dollar mark and were mounting rapidly. Through the work of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station, in cooperation with the U. S. Department of Agriculture, a control measure was devised. Losses from bacterial canker are no longer necessary. The disease may be entirely eliminated by the proper method of seed extraction and disinfection and seed bed sanitation. Information regarding the proper methods to employ in seed selection and plant culture may be obtained by writing the Utah Experiment Station or the U. S. Department of Agriculture. Very impressive benefits have been enjoyed by tomato producers of the entire nation as a result of these findings, and a very material contribution made to the profits of those engaged in the tomato industry.

Mr. Hurren is a farmer and livestock raiser at Hyde Park, Utah. He graduated with the class of 1927 in the school of commerce with a major in business administration; was active in athletics and dramatics; and served on the athletic council and the men's pan-hellenic council. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity and the Beno Club of the Intercollegiate Knights organization. After graduating from the College he attended Stanford University during the term 1929-30.

He has served in the position of foreman of the California Packing Corporation Plant, and since 1932 ha been operating his farm at Hyde Park.

Mr. G ardner is associate professor of business administration at the College. He graduated in 1922 in the school of commerce with a major in accounting. While in College he was active in athletics and dramatics; was a member of the Buzzer staff, Student Life editor, member of the student executive council, and in 1919-20 was president of the student body. He was affiliated with the Alpha Delta Epsilon social fraternity, was a member of Alpha Sigma Nu, senior honor fraternity, and of the Quill Club. He received his M.B.A. degree from the Harvard Business school in 1927. He has taught in the high schoo l at Grac~ Idaho, where he was principal in 1924-25, and since 1927 has been a member of the facult y of the College.

Mr. Peterson is head of the biological and vocational agricultural departments of the Logan city school s. He graduated with the class of 1927 in the school of agriculture with a major in botan y. While in college he was active in athletics, dramatics, debating and music; was student body song leader in 1924-25-26, a member of Pi Kappa Alpha social fraternity , Pi Delta Epsilon, Alpha Sigma Nu, the Ag. and Botany Clubs. He worked on Student Life as sports editor and as associate editor; was a member of the editorial staff of the Buzzer and the Utah Beehive. After graduating from the College he attended the University of Chicago, the University of Idaho, University of Utah, and University of Washington, and also did post graduate work at the U.S.A.C. Mr. Wood is principal of the South Cache Seminary at Hyrum, Utah. He graduated from the College in 1915 in the school of general science with a major in mathematics. While at the College he was active in dramatics and mu sic. After graduating he attended the University of California, the University of Chicago, and the Brigham Young University. Mr. Wood held the positi on of professor of psychology and head of the department of theology at the B.Y.C . from 1915 to 1926, and has been in his present position since that time.

Mr. Lee owns and operates the Sagamore farm at Paradise, Utah . He graduated from the College with the class of 1910 in the school of commerce, majoring in acco unting. Mr. Lee has been bishop of the Paradise Ward since 1922; served as vice-president of the State HolsteinFriesian Association in 1933 and 1934 ;· vice president of Eight

the Cache Valley Dairy Association from 1935 to date· vice president of the county soil conservation committe~ in 1936 and 1937. Two of Mr. Lee's so ns, Gurney and Champ, are student at the College now and two other so n , Burn and Orville S., have graduated and are doina advanced work at the University of Utah medica l school and the University of Wisconsin, respectively.

The recently elected co uncil members wi ll take office for a three-year term on Jul y 1 of this year and will replace the foll owing co uncil members whose terms expire at that time : L. R. Humphreys '12, Harriso n R. Merrill '16, J. Morris Christensen '21, Boyd H. Pulley '33, and Lloyd M. Theurer '28.

Campus Improvements Plans for several additions and improvements in the physical plant of the College have been approved by the board of trustees and work will begin on some of the improvements within the next few weeks.

One and probably two new greenhouses will be erected near the present units. The budget calls for $15 000 for this construction and equipment for the new u~its.

The need of additional greenhouse space to carry on the neces ary. plant experimentation at the college experi~ent statiOn has. I.ong been felt, and the new space will a1~ greatly by g1v1~g ~pportunity for further experimentatiOn and observatiOn m plant life. ew steel book tacks will rep lace the old wooden o~es now in use in a part of the college library. This w1ll make a complete equipment of steel stacks. Plans are to spend about $8,000 in the purchase of new stacks a~d oth~r improvements in the library. The new stacks will reheve the present crowded condition and will aid ·naterially in the mechanical handling of books and docunents.

In addition to the e additions and improvements the purchase of the county farm north of the campus has been negotiated and the title to this property passed to the c~llege. !his will give needed opportunity for field expenments m agronomy, field crops, horticulture and pasture.

In cooperation with the U. S. Bureau of Plant Industry, the experiment station, and the forest service an ex periment station south of Logan on the Providence ~oad will be purchased and equipped. This statipn will be used for work on range forage crops, range management, and forest studies.

The improvements have been planned to relieve the acute need felt in several of the basic field s of education and experimentation at the College.

Miss O live Hale of Blackfoot, Idaho, a 1934 graduate of the College, has been awarded a fellowship for reearch in parent education of Iowa University, Iowa City, Iowa. The fellowship, given by the institute of child welfare at the Iowa institution, is for the year 1937-38.

Miss Hale, who graduated from the College with a major in textiles and a minor in child development, has been engaged in teaching at Box Elder High School in Brigham City, where she is Dean of girls. She will study for her M.S. degree at the Iowa school.

UTAH STATE DEBATERS HA VE ACTIVE YEAR

The Utah State Agricultural College debating department i j u t completing the most extensive and successful season in its history. With 27 students actively participating, Utah State has been represented in 73 intercollegiate debates. Of the 42 of these debates in which decisions we re given, debJtters from the college won 27, or more than 64 per cent. In carrying out this program debaters, on various tour each of whi ch included four students and a coach, have traveled approximately 6300 mile through seven we tern tate , eno-aging in debate with repre entatives of 20 chools from 10 different tates.

Perhaps the most important event of the year was th'e Utah-Idaho Junior College Forensic League Tournament held on the Utah State campus, February 26 and 27.

Under the direction of Wi ll iam T. Adams, assistant debate manager, thi tournament brought over 100 representatives of seven Utah and Idaho junior co llege , Dixie, Snow, Branch Agricultural College, Westminster, Ricks, Univer ity of Idaho, Southern Branch, and Weber, an¡d from the junior college divisions of Brigham Young Univer ity and the University of Utah on the campus for an exten ive two-day program of debating, oratory, and extemporaneo u speakin g. Brigham Yo ng University carried off top honors for debating but the U. S. A. C. girls' team, Mary Heming en and Marie Sharp, headed the list of women debater and Utah State had the best squad record, winning 68 per cen t of its debates. The only entrant from the college in either extemporaneous speaking or oratory, Cora Fuller, tied for third place in the oratory contest. The question debated in this tournament one which was used for a ll other depates of the season ecxept the Rocky Mountain Forensic League meet, was, " Reso lved that Congre hould be empowered to fix minimum wage and maximum hours for indu try."

Utah State hospitality was amply demon trated upon this occasion when, with all hotel s filled , places to sleep were found for nearl yz50 incoming debaters in fraternity and sorority houses and in private homes. The student body organization also cooperated in entertainment, makin g the debaters specia l guests at a student body dance and providin g them a luncheon in the cafeteria at the cone) usion of the tournament.

In addition to this tournament junior co llege debate activity included trips to Pocatello, Idaho, and to Southern Utah . On January 10 and 11 two teams, Paul Coburn and Conway Sonne, Marie Sharp and Mary Hemingsen , accompanied by Manager Edward Barrett, engaged in two non-decision debates with the University of Idaho, Southern Branch, at Pocatello. February 21 to 24 Dr. W. J . Vickers took two team , Lazone Duncan and Sylvan Wittwer, Paul Coburn and Conway Sonne, on a tour to Southern Utah which included non-decision debates with Dixie College, Branch Agricultural College, Snow College, and Brigham Young University, a tour which annuall y aids in promoting good will with these schools.

The varsity debatin g program opened with the Rocky Mountain Forensic League Tournament on the University of Colorado campu , Boulder, Colorado, October 29 to 31. At this unusual tournament Utah State debaters, Marguerite Fonnesbeck and Cora Fuller, Edward Barrett and Robert Bullock under the direction of Dr. Wallace J. Vickers, met teams from Idaho, Utah, Montana, Wyoming

an d Colorado i n critic-judge, non-decision debates on the question, " Resolved that the Democratic p a r t y s h o u 1d be voted out of power at the co ming presidential election," a question of peculiar interest on the weekend before election.

In fulfillment of reciprocal contract agreements made two year ago when a debating t e a m from the University of Arizona visited the Col lege, two varDR. w. J. VICKERS ity teams, William T. Adams and LeMar Hendri ckson, Lila Maughan and Richard Palmer, tra veled ¡to Arizona with Dr. Vickers at the end of the winter. On this trip they engaged in <lebates with the two Arizona State Teachers' college , qt F lagstaff and at Tempe, and with the Univer ity of 1\rizona, at Tucso n, winning a decision at Flagstaff and lo ing one at Tucso n.

The last formal debate of the season were held when debater Edward Barrett and Robert Bullock, Marguerite Fonnesbeck and Raymond Malouf participated in the College of the Pacific Invitational Forensic Tournament, held in Stockton, California, April 1 to 3. Meeting chool from California, Washington , Arizona, Oregon, evada, and Utah in 12 debates, the quad won seven decision . Following the tournament, the debaters had two non-decision debates with the University of San Francisco and one non-decision debate with the University of California.

In addition to these debates with other schools, an interclass non-lettermen's debate tournament was held December 7 to 11, sponsored by Agora, debate lettermen 's society. Won by the sophomore class team, Marjorie Twitchell and Cora Fuller, the co nte t, directed by Marguerite Fonnesbeck, Agora Dictator, included 9 teams from the fre hman , sophomore, and junior cia ses.

As the Quarterly goes to press, Dr. F. D. Daines i directing preparations for the annual Utah Student Legislature to be held May 14 and 15 in the House of Representatives chamber of the Utah State Capitol. Thirty-six students, 12 each from the U.S. A. C., University of Utah, and Brigham Young University, wil l meet to propose, debate, and vote on bi ll s .co ncerned with the reo rganization of the state tax sy tern, the reorganization of county government , and the state co ntrol of natural resources.

Chairmen of the legislature will be President Herbert B. Maw of the Utah State Senate and Speaker Jo eph W. Jensen of the Utah State Hou e of Rep resentative . Originated by Dr. W. J . Vickers, the Student Legislature last year attracted statewide notice and promises to be eve n more successful thi yea r in directing the attention of the public to problems which mu t be so lved.

TOASTMASTER John W. Peters of Brigham City, a member of the class of 1912, has been chosen by the committee or arrangements for the annual Alumni banquet to act as toastmaster for this occasion.

Mr. Peters' class will observe its 25th anniversary reunion and has been designated the H o n o r C l a s s during the Commencement exercises at the College. Mr. Peters is at the present time managing numerous investments in JoHN W. PETERS which he is interested, is a director of one of the banks in his home city, and is president of the Box Elder District board of Education. He served two terms as mayor of Brigham City in 1917 to 1921; was state senator for two terms from 1921 to 1927; is past president of the Brigham City chamber of commerce; and past president of the Brigham City rotary club. The banquet, which is to be held in the reading room of the College Library on Saturday, June 5, at 6:30 p.m. promises to be a function of unusual interest and will be well worth "coming home" to attend.

Class of 1937 To the largest graduating class in the history of the Coll ege, the Alumni Association extends sincere greetings and congratu lations. Commencement week this spring will witness the granting of nearly 400 Bachelor of Science degrees, an increase of 26 per cent over last year. According to information from the Registrar's office, there will be granted at the commencement exercises on June 5, 393 Bachelor of Science degrees, 20 Mastr of Science degrees, and 40 Normal certificates.

Promoted H. B. Hunsaker, '30, physical education director of the new Logan Senior High Schoo l gymnasium, was recentl y appointed instructor in physical education at Utah State Co ll ege. Under Mr. Hunsaker's direction the new high school gymnasium has been popularized not only among students of the school but among the business men of Logan as welL " Hy" is a former instructor in physical education at the College where he did much to promote and popularize intramural activities on the campus. -Later he served in the position of coach at Fieldin g High School, Paris, Idaho, and then went to the Branch Agricultural College at Cedar City, from which institution he came to his recent position at the Logan Senior High SchooL He graduated from the College in 1930 in the school of education with a major in physical education, and received his M.S. degree from the Univer~ity of Oregon in 1931.

Valedictorian Dorothy Johnson G.a rdner has been chosen to represent the graduating class of 1937 as valedictorian, it was recently announced by the Attendance and Scholarship Committee. Mrs. Gardner, with a grade percentage of 94.67, had the highest grade average in the class of 1937.

Margaret Cardon, Marguerite Fonnesbeck, and Ruth Linnebach, in the order named, were next in line for highest honors. Mrs. Gardner has an English major and a History minor. She was valedictorian of her graduating class from the North Cache High School. Last year she was married to Eugene Gardner, instructor of physics and mathematics, who was valedictorian of the class of 1935. Mrs. Gardner debated on the varsity squad in her sophomore and junior years, was a member of the Student Life staff two years, and edited Scribble magazine in her sophomore and senior years. In high school she was active in debating and was assistant editor of the school paper. She was recently elected to membership in the Phi Kappa Phi national scholastic fraternity, and is a member of Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Sigma Nu, Empryean Club, Lambda Rho, French and English Clubs.

The Class of 1912, headed by its president George B. Caine will observe its 25th anniversary during Commenc~ment week this spring. Accepts New Post Boyd H. Pulley, '33, has accepted a position as central laboratory accountant for the 13 western states under the mapping and aerial photography project of the A.A.A. Mr. Pulley was until the time of his new appointment state accountant for the Agricultural Conservation Administration u n de r t h e A .A.A., with offices at the College. Up o n receiving word of his new position, he left by airplane for Washington, D. C., returning to Bovo H. PULLEY take up his duties in Salt Lake City May 17.

Mr. Pulley has been a member of the general council of the Alumni Association for the past three years and a member of the Executive Committee of the Council for the past two years. He is at present chairman of the Chapter Organization Committee of the Alumni Association. After his graduation from the College where he was enrolled in the school of arts and science, he taught school for several months and then acceptel a position with the Extension Service under the A .A.A. pro-gram.

As a student at the College he was active in student and extra-curricular activities. He was president of the senior class and cadet major of the R.O.T.C. He received the R.O.T.C. medal, the College citizenship award, and four-year student Life awards. Among the organization of which he was a member are Scabbard & Blade, Blue Key, Theta Alpha Phi, Intercollegiate Knights, Alpha Sigma Nu, of which he was president, and Pi Delta Epsilon, national journalistic fraternity . Mr. Pulley edited the feature section of the Buzzer and was student body cheer leader. He has been in 14 major plays since his sophomore year. Included among this number are Only 38, Allison's House, Skidding, Constant Wife, Berkeley Square, Laburnum Grove, Hamlet, Othello, As yo u Like it, and Taming of the Shrew.

Al~:~mni Executive to Speak Lloyd M. Theurer, President of the Alumni Association and clerk of the Cache county board of education, received word recently of his selection as one of three principal speakers in a three-part symposium on "Transportation" to be presented at the annual convention of the National Association of Public School Business .Officials to be held at Baltimore, Md., October l l to 15.

Mr. Theurer is a member of the national committee on transportation.

Selection of the Cache School official for the position was announced in a letter received by Mr. Theurer from John S. Mount, Trenton, N. J ., president of the association. Joseph Miller, Jr. , secretary of the New York City board of education and chairman of the national transportation committee, and R. P . Orchard of Bedford Village, Ohio, will be other speakers in the three-part symposium.

Mr. Theurer wi ll speak on the relation of transportation to education in a county unit. Mr. Miller will speak on state requirements and control as applied to school transportation, and Mr. Oreha,-d will discuss the relation of transportation in the local community.

P. V. Ca rdon , '09, former director of the Utah Agricultural Experiment Station and now in charge of the division of forage crops and diseases, Bureau of Plant Industry, U.S.D.A., will spend three months in Europe this summer visiting experiment stations and studying research methods in grass land improvements. Mrs. Cardon is accompanying him on the tour. They sailed from ew York City May 12 on the President Roosevelt and expect to return to that port August 5 on the S. S. Manhattan . Mr. Cardon has been designated by Secretary Wallace as a representative of the U.S. Department of Agriculture to the 4th International Grass Land Congress to be held in Great Britain in Jul y. In this capacity he will read a paper before one of the plenary sessions of the congress.

Since going to Washington from Log&n in July 1935, Mr. Cardon has expanded the research program of the division of forage crops and diseases unti l it has become active in a ll major agricultural regions of the United States. One of the newer unit was established at Logan in 1936, in cooperation with the Utah Experiment station and the intermountain forest and range experiment station of the forest service.

Mr. Cardon is responsible for the direction of the U. S. regional pasture research laboratory e tablished last year by order of the secretary of agricu lture on recommendation and in cooperation with the agricultural experiment stations of the twelve northeastern state . Thi laboratory is located at State College, Pennsylvania.

Accepts Directorship Thoma s Glen Worthington , '29, coach of the state champi onship Davis High School ba ketball team and head of the ath letic department at the Davis High School for evera l years, has been selected to succeed H. B. Hunsaker, '30, as physica l education director at the Logan Senior High SchooL Coach Worthington gradu ated from Utah State Co llege in 1929 where he carved out one of the most brilliant athletic careers in the history of the institution. His specialties were basketball and track. In the former he gained all-conference honors for three years as center, and in the latter sport marked himself as a leading hurdler in the conference. Since taking over the reins a bead of the Davis High School athletic department, he has produced outstanding ba ketball and track teams in the Jordan District of Region 2, winning the region track meet on several occasions and the J ordan District championship once. His basketball teams of the past two ea ons have been among the stro ngest in the state tournament and during the past eason was the outstanding team in the state in winning the title. Scholarship Winners Vernon Jamison of Preston, Idah o, graduate student in so ils chemistry, and Orson S. Cannon of Bountiful, Utah, graduate student in plant pathology at the College, have been awarded fell ow hips to Cornell University in Ithaca, ew York, according to word recently received from the graduate school of the New York Institution.

Mr. Jamison is working on his thesis for an M.S. degree at the present time. He was graduated from the Co ll ege in 1936 with a major in chemistry and a minor in physics. He is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi national scholastic fraternity, and was se lected by the local chapter of Phi Kappa Phi to compete for one of three scho larships offered by the national organization.

Mr. Cannon was awarded the Clinton DeWitt Smith fellowship in agriculture. He was graduated from the U. S. A. C. in 1935 with a major in botany, and at the present time he is studying for an M.S. degree in plant patholo5y. He is a member of the Delta Phi national honorary returned-missionary fraternity, having served from 1929 to 1933 as an L. D. S. missionary in the German-Austrian mission. He was graduated from Davis High School in 1926.

Robert Wrigley, Jr., '34, son of County Agent R. L. Wrigley, ' ll, received a second scholarship award at the University of Chicago recently. The scholarship applies for the 1937-38 school term, the first scholarship having been awarded to Mr. Wrigley last year. Robert graduated from the College in 1934 and entered the University of Chicago in 1936 to begin work on his doctor's degree in physical sciences.

Aaron G . Nelson, '37, a graduating senior in the agricultural economics department of the College, has received a graduate scholarship at the Iowa State College, in Ames, Iowa, for the coming school year. Mr. Nelson, formerly of Montpelier, Idaho , completed his work for graduation at the end of the winter quarter and is doing graduate work this quarter. He hopes to complete the remainder of the school year and attend the summer session, after which he will prepare to enter school at Ames in September. Aaron began his college work at the B. Y. U. where he attended two quarters and then continued his schooling at the U . S. A. C. for two years before filling a mission in Sweden for the L. D. S. church. Upon his return to Utah he reentered school and will receive his B.S. degree in June. He is a member of Alpha Zeta, national honorary agricultural fraternity, and an active member of the Ag Club, having worked on committees for the Harvest Ball, horse show, Ag show, and this year has been social committee chairman for the organization.

Boyd Berry, '37, agronomy major in the class of 1937, was recently appointed to work with Dr. F. V. Owen, '21, to assist in sugar beet investigation for the U. S. Department of Agriculture with headquarters in Salt Lake City. During the past year Mr. Berry has been doing part time work in the agriculture department where he has received much valuable experience in the handling of field plots and other beet planting work.

Dean F. Peterson, Jr., '34, has been awarded a graduate fellowship at Rensselaer Pol ytechnic Institute, oldest engineering and scientific school in the United States. The fellowship awarded only to students of high rank gives the holder a stipend of $600 and free tuition. Mr.

Peterson, who graduated from the College in 1934 as a civil engineer, attended Rensselaer in the fall of 1934 for a year of graduate stud y which he fini shed in June 1935 with the degree of Ma ter of Civi l Engineering. Under the fellowship now awarded him, he wil l work for the degree of doctor of civil engineering. Since the spring of 1935 Dean has been an engineer with the U. S. D. L at Fort Washakie, Wyoming. Dean, Jr., is the son of Dean F. Peterson, '10.

Robert J. Evans, J'r., '34, who has been studying agricultural chemistry at the University of Wisconsin has just recently received an extension of the present graduate fell ow hip under which he has been studying during the past year. The fellowship pays $600 for the school year and remits all tuition and laboratory fees in the department. He reports that he is getting excell ent course work in both the department of agricultural chemistry and in the school of medicine and mentions especially his work under Dr. Steinbach in the study of vitamins.

His research is concerned with the role of florine and iodine in anima l nutrition. The a lumni research organization which supplies the fellow hip has done much to discover and place on the market some of the finest vitamin-bearing compounds now in use.

Victor Peterson, '35, of Logan has recently been awarded a scholarship by the Geology Department of the University of Chicago. Victor is the son of Director William Peterson of the College Extension Service. Mr. Peterson was awarded his M.S. degree in Geology at Utah State College in June 1936, having received his B.S. degree with a major in geo logy and a minor in chemistry in 1935. Whi le a student at the College Victor was a member of Scabbard and Blade military organization, the Engineers Club, the competitive rifle team, and a member of the military ball committee two consecutive years. He is studying for a doctorate at the University of Chicago at the present time.

Low, '37 of Providence, senior student in the chool of forestry at the Co ll ege, has been awarded a $900 research fellowship in wildlife management by the Iowa State College at Ames, Iowa. The fellowship awarded Mr. Low is for a period of ll months. The research will be carried out as part of the wildlife cooperative research station program at the Iowa institution under the direction of Logan J. Bennett of the U. S. Bio logical Survey. The station at Iowa State College is similar to the one sustained in cooperation with the Utah State College under the direction of Dr. R. L Rasmussen, and is one of 9 such stations in the United States. Under his present plan Jessop will report at the Iowa station July L Mr. Low, a former student of South Cache High School, is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi national cholastic fraternity, and Apha Zeta, national honorary agricultural fraternity. His scholastic average for his four years of college work was reported as being the highest average among seniors of the forestry schoo l.

Mrs. Ellen Kemp Watson, '36, has received a fellowship to the Cornell University school of home economics to study in the department of parental education. Mrs. Watson wi ll work on her Ph.D. degree. She will leave with her husband, Ross D. Watson, '35, in September to enrol l at the beginning of the fall term.

Roland P. Monson, '27, became an inspector for the U. S. P ost Office Department on March l. His first assignment was to Washin gton, D. C. Roland is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ezra P. Monson of Logan . He has been employed as special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, U. S. Department of Justice, since 1930.

His work in this department was confined to investigation of national bank violations, fraudulent bankruptcies, stock swindl es, and other commercial frauds in violation of the anti-mail fraud statutes. In the capacity of an expert accountant he has testified for the federal government in prosecuting violators of the anti-mail fraud statutes. Mr. Monson, formerl y of Franklin and Blackfoo t, Idaho, served as auditor for the U. S. Accounting Office in Washington from 1928 to 1930. In 1930 he was awarded the degree of Bachelor of Commercial Science from the Benjamin Franklin University in Washington. He received his B.S. degree from Utah State in 1927 where he was registered in the school of commerce.

Goodrich to Hawaii Word was recently received from the ¡War Department, Washington, D. C., to the effect that Captain W. R. Goodrich of the College R. 0. T. C. will sail from San Francisco this summer to take up a two-year tour of duty in Hawaii, beginning Aug~st 28. ~he Captain B;nd his family have spent the past SIX years m Logan, wh1c_h years, they state, have been among the most pleasant . . spent in any one place.

Captain Goodrich came to the College at the begmning of the school year in 1931, having been transferre_d from the Hawaiian Islands. During the course of h1s stay at the College he and his family have made hundreds of friends among college and townspeople.

Golfing is the Captain's chief hobby and one in which he has won state-wide recognition. He was the first champion of the Logan Golf and Country Club, holding the title for two consecutive years in 1933 and 1934. In 1935 he became the Cache Valley amateur champion, and in the same year won the first flight in the Boise, Idaho, open championship tourney. In 1936 he became the Logan city champion.

While at the College he was made a member of Scabbard and Blade, national military society, and Phi Kappa Iota local social fraternity. The many friends of Captain Goodrich and family unite in wishing them Bon Voyage and much happiness in their new location.

Dr. Vasco M. Tanner, head of the department of zoology and entomology at Brigham Young University, and a former student of the Utah State Agricultural College, will teach fundamental biological principles and heredity and eugenics at the summer session this year.

Dr. Tanner is permanent secretary of the Utah Academy of Arts and Sciences and trustee of the Pan Pacific Entomologist, one of the main entomological publications of the West. He is an outstanding taxonomist and has published many scientific treatises on animal life of this state. ¡ Fourteen

George Bankhead, '30, together with his wife and daughter, left Providence during the latter part of April for Fort Washakie Indian reservation where Mr. Bankhead has accepted a civil service position.

Orville S. Lee, B.S., '34, M.S., '36, of Paradise, Utah, now working on his doctorate at the University of Wisconsin, is the author of a leading article "The Movement of Pheasants" in Wisconsin Outdoors, a sportsman's magazine published in Reedsburg, Wisconsin. Orville is a graduate of the Utah State College, having received his B.S. degree in 1934 in zoology and his masters degree in 1936 in wildlife management.

Ralph T. King, '24. Word has just recently reached Dr. George F. Knowlton of the College to the effect that Ralph " Terry" King has received an appointment as head of the department of forest zoology, and director of the Roosevelt wildlife experiment station at Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York. Mr. King resigned from the University of Minnesota where he was instructor in economic zoology in order to take up his new duties at the New York institution.

Dr. Heber Chase Hancock, '11, is a surgeon in Scarsdale, New York, where he resides at 14 Paddington Road.

Dr. Hancock graduated from the College in 1911 in the school of Agriculture with a major in animal husbandry.

He was active in athletics, playing on the varsity football team as half-back, center on the varsity basketball team, and won first in the pole vault event on the state championship track team of that time. He was also active in dramatics, appearing in several plays and operettas.

After leaving the College he served as instructor in the Ogden High School 1911-12, and during the following year was with the U. S. Forestry Service, Washington, D. C., engaged in reconnaissance work. He then studied medicine at New York University and Bellevue Medical College where his M.D. degree was grantd in 1918. He did graduate work at the University of Vienna and the University of Budapest, specializing in surgery, gynecology, and obstetrics ; became Fellow of American College of Surgeons in 1934, degree F.A.C.S.

This period o£ service includes two years at Echo Dam, five years in the concrete dams section at the Denver office and one and one·half years in the Commissioners office, Wash· ington, D.C. Mr. Carter was recently transferred from the Denver office to the Salt Lake City office where he will act as Office Engineer for the Salt Lake Basin Project.

Howard! D. Larson, junior engineer, class of 1933, is a permanent employee at the Denver office of the Bureau of Reclamation in the photo·elastic investigations and technical research studies.

0. L. Rice, class of 1923, is permanently employed at the Denver office of the Bureau of Reclamation. He has charge of the design and construction of all earth dams. Mr. Rice states that the positions he has held while employed with the Bureau of Reclamation have included practically every kind of job from levelman to engineer on investigations, construction and design. His outstanding work was thEl designing of Boulder Dam intake towers costing $3,244,000, and also construction designs for the Grand Coulee Dam from the starting of the dam through the year 1935.

Laren D. Morrill, junior engineer, class of 1936, is employed by the U.S.B.R. at the Denver office in the concrete testing laboratory. His specific work consists of conducting freezing and thawing tests in concrete and temperature stress calculations.

Robert W. Jennings '33, Cecil G. Bargeron '33, Frank E. Rippon '33, .George W. Birch '35 and James E. Mandry '35 are junior engineers engaged in designing reinforced concrete structures in the canal designing section at the Denver office for the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation. Mr. Jennings and Mr. Bargeron are temporarily employes at the Denver office and will be transferred to the Salt Lake City office of the U.S.B.R. in the near future.

Owen J. Olsen, class of 1930, is associate engineer in charge of materials laboratory and has been employed at the Denver office with the Bureau since graduating from Utah State.

James C. Doman, class of 1935, is engineering draftsman, earth dam design section, Outlet works division at the Denver office of the Bureau of Reclamation. He expects to be transferred in the near future to the Island Park Dam project on the upper Snake River in Idaho.

He will he inspector of concrete and materials for that project.

William A. Cordon, class of 1935. Mr. Cordon was earth and concrete inspector at the Denver office in the concrete and earth materials laboratory during the winter months hut was recently transferred to the Island Park Dam, Upper Sn@.ke River project, where he is employed as inspector of materials.

C. 0. Crane, junior engineer, class of 1934, is permanently employed at the Denver office with the Bureau of Reclamation in the concrete dam section. He was previously employed on the Ogden River project as concrete inspector before coming to Denver.

J. M. Barrett, class of 1924, is permanently employed at the Denver office of the Bureau of Reclamation in the dam section. Specifically, his work has to do with spillway design, etc. He was previously employed by the

Bureau on the following projects: Salt Lake Basin investigations, Utah; Upper Snake River investigations, Idaho; Field Office, Boulder Dam project; and the Ogden River project.

A. K. Hill, class of 1932, is a junior engineer permanently employed at the Denver office with the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation in the concrete dam section. His specific work is design studies for concrete dams. Previously, Mr. Hill worked on the Hyrum Dam project and the Ogden River project as engineering draftsman.

Uno' V. Engstrom, class of 1935, is a junior engineer temporarily employed in the dam section at the Denver office, U.S.B.R. engaged in designing spillways for dams.

Mr. Engstrom expects to he transferred to the Salt Lake City office in the near future where he was previously employed on the Provo River project. Carl F. Olson, class of 1935, earth and concrete inspector, was employed at : the Denver office during the winter months in the section of general design and estimates of dams and also in the materials laboratories. He was recently transferred to the Moon Lake project in Utah where he is employed as concrete and earth materials inspector.

J. Niel Murdock, class of 1930, is temporarily employed at the Denver office of the Bureau of Reclamation in the earth and concrete laboratories. He expects to· he transferred in the near future to Utah on the Provo River project where he was previously employed.

Many graduates are also employed by the Bureau of Reclamation doing construction work in the field. Seventeen graduates are thus employed. Stanley Bohman '34 has been on the Boulder Dam during practically its entire construction period. Charles Rippon '31 is office engineer on the Seminoe Dam, Casper-Alcova project in Wyoming. E. 0. Larson, a Masters graduate in 1923, has for several years been in charge of the secondary investigations for the Bureau of Reclamation in Utah. He investigated and made the preliminary plans for the Hyrum project, the Ogden River project, and is now completing the investigations for the Deer Creek project in Wasatch County. In addition to this, he has been in charge of the investigations for the Moon Lake Dam and the Ephraim tunnel. Don Jerman, a graduate of 1924, is now chief concrete inspector for the Taylor Park Dam, Uncompahgre project, Colorado. Vaud Larson, a graduate of 1930, is on the Burnt River project assisting with the construction of the Unity Dam in Oregon. Herman Steele, Earl Jensen, and Ellis Armstrong are working out of the Salt Lake office of the Bureau of Reclamation on the Deer Creek project. Alton Peterson, Harold Felsted, Grant Gyllenskog. and Orvil Cheney · have been working on the Moon Lake and Pine View Dams. Marion Archibald is on the Caballo, and Hyrum Woodward on the French Town project.

The Utah State engineering graduates now total 39 men who are working with the Bureau of Reclamation.

There may he others, but these are all that can he accounted for from the records of the engineering school.

The growth of these men since becoming affiliated with the Bureau has been steady and consistent, indicating that their training in engineering and personal qualifications rank them second to none in the United States.

Tomato Disease Investigations Continued from page 7 VERTICJLLIUM WILT

For the past ten to fifteen years the farmers and processors of the State of Utah have been losing more fruit from a sun scald resulting from exposure to the direct rays of the sun during the ripening process. The destruction from this cause reached such alarming pro¡ portions that in 1932 the Utah Canners A sociation made a strong plea for assistance in an effort to- discover and correct the causes of the excessive destruction from sun scalding. A careful survey of tomato fields directly preceeding and during the harvesting period revealed several factors which influenced the development of scalded tomato fruit.

The most important factor is a parasitic disease induced by a fungus known as Verticillium alboatrum.

This organism invades and reduces the effi ciency of the vascular conducting tissue. The result is a slow yel lowing and dropping of the large basal leaves and a gra?u¡ al wilting of the maturing plant. The earl y destructiOn of foliage is responsible for a full exposure of the developing fruit to the direct rays of the sun and a subsequent sun scald .

The next most important factor in the sun scald problem is faulty irrigation practices. Vine growth is often quite vigo rous and many farmers feel that it is necessar y to drown the plant at the beginning of the harvesting sea on in order to check the vegetative development of th e plant and to hasten the ripening of the fruit. Usuall y the irrigation is so drastic that besides checking the devel opment of the plant a general breakdo wn is initiated that eventually exposes the fruit to the direct ray of the sun and the fruit is scalded .

Another factor of importance in the sun scald complex is the practice empl oyed by some producers of either cutting the tap r oot of the tomato plant with the shovel or stepping in the center of the plant and breaking o-pen the crown to check vegetative development. Frequentl y such treatment again exposes the fruit to the sun's rays prematurely by destroying a portion of the vegetation and sun sca lding results.

Field studies are being conducted at Farmington and Roy, Utah, for the purpose of selecting tomato p lants that will resist Verticillium wilt. The subsequent develo-pment of earl y maturing types and proper irrigati on practices will make possibl e the control of thi disease.

MOSAIC DISEASES

The mosaic diseases of the tomato are virus diseases which are found universall y distributed through Utah tomato fie lds. The diseases usuall y are not conspicuous and very freque ntly go unobserved. The farmers do not notice their presence unl ess one of the severe or streak form s develops. The usual and most comm onl y observed mosaic disease is ex pressed by a mottlin g or uneven distribution o-f the chl orophyll in the leaf. Careful studies made some years ago at the Davis County Experimental Farm indicate that plants which deve lop the mild form of the disease earl y in the season produced thirty-three percent less marketabl e fruit than the p lants which remained health y throughout the season. Th ose plants which devel op the severe form of the disease before the bearing season are a total loss. The mosaic diseases are disseminated by insect vectors, but little is known about them in Utah . The viruses which induce the diseases in the infected plants over-winter on perennial weed hosts,

but again little is known of the nature, distribution and den ity of the p opulation of such ho ts in the State. The very prevalent occurrence of the diseases throughout the tomato producing area is indicative of a wide distribution of the wild hosts of the viruses.

Very much can be done to increa e the productiveness of the tomato, to reduce the cost of production and to proportionately increase the returns from the tomato crop to the farmer by further progre s in the development of meth ods of controlling the plant diseases now takin g a heavy annual toll from the pockets of the farmers and tomato processors of the State. Tomato disease investigati ons have already resulted in annual savings to the tomato industry of the United States far in excess of the annual cost of the entire State Ag ricultural College, Experiment Station, and Extension Service. Research, if given an opportunity by adequate upport, will provide so lutions to the perpl exing problems facing Agriculture and all other maj or industries around whi ch our present civilization i builded. The greatest di vidends paid on an y investment is the dividend paid society on the meager investment society makes in research. A wise social fi nancing policy would find a greater and greater amount of the wealth of ouT great society invested in research, the greatest of all dividend payers.

ALUMNUS HAS GOOD RECORD AT SOUTHERN SCHOOL Enterin g a stock judging team in the International Dairy Cattle show next fall is the ambition of Staffo rd M. Blackham of Moroni, 1931 graduate of the College, now assistant professor of agriculture in charge of animal husbandry at the Southwestern Louisiana Institute in Lafayette, Louisiana .

Accordin g to word received recently by Harry H. Smith, professor of animal husbandry at Utah State, Professor Blackham entered his team in the recent dairy cattle judgin g contest of the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock show at Fort Worth, Texas. His team won first place in the judging of Holstein cattle with one student winning high point honors in the judging of Holsteins.

The team won third place honors of the entire contest.

Last fall Professor Blackham's team was entered in the judging contest held in connection with the livestock show of the Texas Centennial exposition at Fort Worth.

The team won high point honors in the judging of swine, with one student scoring the highest in swine judging, and third highest in the entire judging contest. The Louisiana team stood fifth among all the entries in the general livestock judging contest.

Professor Blackham was graduated from the U.S.A.C. with a major in animal husbandry and a minor in agricultural economics. Followin g graduation, he was awarded a scholarship at the Texas College of Agriculture and Mechanics, from which institution he was graduated with an M.S. degree. He became a member of the faculty of the Louisiana institution in 1934.

Earl Hawkes, '29, a graduate of the school of commerce, and his wife, the former Editha Rich, a former student, were :t:ecent visitors in Logan. They were enroute to New York City. Mr. Hawkes is traveling auditor for Hurst Publications and has recentl y been transferred from San Francisco to New York.

Bet·a Delta Joins Kappa Delta National Sorority Beta Delta, local sorority on the Utah State campus, became affiliated with the Kappa Delta national sorority in a series of ceremonies which were held May 6, 7, and 8. By an unusual coincidence in the listing, the local chapter is the Beta Delta chapter of the national organization. This chapter will be included in the Zeta Province which is comprised of chapters in Washington, Oregon, and California. Several officers from national headquarters in Washington, D.C., were in attendance.

The installation ceremonies included first, second, and third degrees, an installation tea at the Student Commons Friday, May 7, given by the alumni of Beta Delta, a trip up Logan Canyon, and concluded with a banquet held at the Bluebird Saturday evening, May 8. The first business meeting of the Beta Delta chapter of Kappa Delta was held Sunday morning, May 9. The local group was greatly honored with the presence of the national president of Kappa Delta who for the first time in ten years attended the installation of a new chapter.

A pcture painted by Weldon S. Burnham, U .S.A.C. graduate and son of Mr. and Mrs. W. K. Burnham of Logan , recently won the prize offered by the Utah State Federation of Women's Clubs in an exhibit sponsored by the Penny art fund of the federation , which was held at the Ben Lomond Hotel in Ogden.

The picture was purchased by pennies contributed by the clubs and was awarded to the Child Culture club of Ogden for outstanding work in promoting art.

In addition to Mr. Burnham's entry were pictures from 78 contestants. The winning picture was called "Autumn in Ogden Canyon."

Mr. Burnham first won prominence at the Logan High school and the U. S. A. C. for his brilliant art work. He was art editor of the "Buzzer", student year book, in 1930 and was editor-in-chief of the publication in 1931. He graduated with the class of 1933.

He has established a studio in Ogden.

Framing Your Home for Beauty Is your house framed, or is it still standing loose in the scene? Is it tied to the ground by foundation planting, or does it look as if it were separate and apart from the rest of the landscape? Interrogator J. C. Hogenson, U. S. A. C. Extension Agronomist, proceeds to answer his own question with the following landscaping hints: In order to create beauty, harmony and unity in the home landscape, plantings must be such as to make the house appear as if it really belonged where it stands and is a part of the unified landscape. · To accomplish this, there must be a rather spacious lawn in front of the house, with a walk from the front door to the gate as inconspicuous as possible. This gives the appearance of one continuous stretch of lawn in front of the house. Shrubs or even rows of flowers along the path are out of place. Flag stones are better than a cement walk in that they are less visible. Flower beds of different shapes and sizes are out of place on the front lawn. Plantings of shrubs at the outer corners of the lawn help to tie in and unify the landscape.

To complete the picture, an evergreen or deciduous tree should be planted about half way from the house to the front fence or sidewalk, one on either side of the house, and about four feet out from a line drawn from the ends of the house toward the street. These trees, when viewed from the street, form a beautiful green frame for the house, and together with the foundation plantings give unity, harmony and beauty to the scene. The foundation plantings should give the appearance of a rounding curve with the lawn and the house instead of the right angle which was formed there originally without the foundation plantings.

C. Douglas Wadsworth, '37, who has completed his forestry course at the College, was appointed to the Cache National Forest on April 1 for duties in connection with a timber survey. Mr. Wadsworth was chief of a timber survey crew taking an inventory of the timber resources in the Cache Forest in 1936. According to present plans an additional survey of about half a million acres for intensive information on forest inventory will be made during the field season of 1937.
