Thursday was a big day on the Quad for sawhorse ropers, left, and for pig-chasers , above, who welcomed the event with all the enthusiasm of an elementary school field day - just look at their faces.

The pig even seemed to get a good laugh out of it.

Coated with a layer of Crisco, the squeaky little swine evaded his pursuants for several minutes. Myron Casdorph tackled the creature and captured the dubious honor of winner of the Greased Pig Contest. That'll look good on a resume.

But the best is yet to come. Today at high noon on the Quad is the Cow Chip Throw, where, as advertised , you can "watch your college dean 'throw the bull.,,.

Then at 2:30 p.m. over yonder at the Amphitheatre there'll be the annual Milk Maid Contest, wrapping up Ag Week for this year. Bring the kids, dog and a picnic basket.

among 1,192 plaintiffs, said attorney Dale HaraJson of Tucson.

Haralson said Jenkins ordered the federal government to pay $2.6 million to nine of the 10 successful plaintiffs. The 10th did not receive an award immediately because she

had died since the 1982 trial of the lawsuit.

Jenkins will rule on that claim later, he siad.

The judge denied recovery on 14 cases, Haralson said.

The 24 cases were chosen by attorneys to represent different forms of cancer from

among the 1,192 plaintiffs. They alleged that atmospheric testing at the Nevada Test Site between 1951 and 1962 caused about 375 cases of cancer in themselves or their

relatives, some taking decades to develop.

Attorneys hope the judge's decision on the cases can be used to settle similar claims out of court.

ASUSU votes to look into Spectrum power increase

By WENDY WEAVER ttaff writer A resolution that could increase the current Spectrum power system by 400 amps per leg was passed Wednesday in an ASUSU Executive Senate meeting .

According to Steve Thompson, ASUSU spectrum productions vice president , the power increase is needed to facilitate major concerts.

The cost to rent a generator is $800 to $1,200.

Whenall the expenses involvedwith adding power to Spectrum facilities are totaled,the cost can be $1,200 or more Thompson said.

The total cost of the generator could be between SS,000and $8,000.

A resolution suggesting thatthe show cases by the SCAuditorium be reserved forpublicitv and promotion by the cultural , Spectrum Productions and activities offices was also passed .

'The display cases have not been utilized as effectively as possible, " said the resolution, submitted by Camille Thorpe, cultural vice president.

A bill that would requir e the ASUSU Executive Council to hold two forums each month to report to the students the activities tak ing place in their office within the past month , was presented for first reading at the meeting. The bill, submitted by Steve Jones , academic vice president , would also require the coun cil to receive student input regarding those activities as well as any other concerns the students bring forth.

A resoluti on that would allow ASUSU officers to pur chase a terrace parkin g per mit at the same yearly rate as staff and faculty failed.

'The editorial in The Stat esman convinced me that this resolution should not be passed ," said Steve Jones, academic vice president. He said because other student s may be required to spend time on campu s too , it wouldn 't be fair to allow stu dent officers any parking privileges.

The officers also tabled a resolution that would ban all canines , other than seeing-eye dogs, from campus and a bill that would purchase used typewriters for each stud ent officer.

Want to get away from USU? Try nationwide exchange

If you're after three-four month vacation but don't want to interrupt echoo!ing,Lavell Saunders may have a dealfor you.

As USU's coordinator and representative for National Student Exchange (NSE), he can transplant students in one of 70 other universities throughout the United States as part of a nationwide exchange program.

'Theseschools have banded loeethe,-and chosen to exchange ecudents,"said Saunders, director of ~ic Support Services.

Sophomore and junior students and even seniors, in some instances , can relocate anywhere from the Virgin Islands to Hawaii and from California to Maine, and usually need pay no extra money over transportation costs , according to Saunders.

"Overall , it costs about an extra $1,000," said Cathy Allen, a senior majoring in recreation education , who went to the University of Southern Maine on the exchange program last fall.

A11en and her roommate Sig Evans , also a senior recreation education major, saw an advertisement in The Utah Statesman last year and decid-

ed, 'What the heck - I wan ted to go somewhere in the East ," accordin g to Evans.

Choosing a univ ersity out of th e NSE catalog can be "kind of a blind decision ," as Evans termed it, but Saunders says he and his staff work closely with each student.

'We talk about the disadvantages , advantages and the costs ," he said .

'We encourage them to explore the reasons for going and wh y they want to go - is it just to get out of 'Happy Valley]' - and what things they want to accomplish ."

Main considerations , accordin g to Saunders , include the prospective

schoo l's loca tion, ho w strong and selecti ve its program is for the student 's major and the exchange plan(s) available at that university .

"Some schoo]s are wide open ," Saunders said , citing USU, University of Idaho , West Chester University and Oregon State as a few of those that allow any number of students in.

Other schools that in contrast "have some pretty sever e limitations " include University of Maryland and University of Hawaii.

"Hawaii is a very popular choice ," Saunders explained . "They have more (continued on page 6)

" Nabti said Israel was founded with a total disregard for Palestine and that if the plan had included a live-and-let-live approach it would not be the mess it is. He said even England, which had a large part in the founding of Israel, takes a more realistic view of the problems Israel is causing.

Nabit said the Aswan Dam in Egypt is one of the influences Israel exerts on the United States. He said Egypt wanted U.S. technology to help construct the dam, but the Jewish lobby pressured the United States to repond.

"Egypt was desperate ," he said. 'The Soviet Union was ready with the technology and they assisted.

"Jordan's Hussein is a friend of America, but Israel is saying they need the land across the Jordan River for their security. They also want to push all the Palestinians there."

To Nabti, further testimony of the coercion is Israel's support of Iran and some Latin American

countri es by selling them spare parts for their military equipment .

'The U .S. hands over technology and money to Israel and Israel gives it to Iran. Again , I do not believe this country is choosing to do this but is being forced ," he said.

According to Nabti, some of America 's closest allies are beginning to wonder about the inability to come upt with a permanent solution to the Mideast problem . He says the people of the Middle East also wonder.

'1n general the Arabs have ben influenced by the West and have been anti-Soviet," Nabti said.

"Basically they don 't have a problem with the United States ' being forced to support Israel. They do question the fact that some of the profit this country makes in the Arab world goes back to Israel and is used to beat Arabs over the head.

'They don 't want a one-sided policy. They want America to be fair and just and to work for peace and harmony, not to put one country against another. The want America to practice justice as they see it, not as it is forced upon them. "

Keep politicians away from Olympics When the United States boycotted the 1980 Olympic Games, the Soviets were furious. They lost hundreds of thousands of dollars in potential business - and the possibility of propaganda because athletes and spectators who would have been spending their money in Moscow didn't show up to the Games.

In what appears as a retort to the U.S. boycott, the U.S.S.R. announced Tuesday that it wouldn't be sending its athletes to the Games, held this year in Los Angeles. Reasons given include a slack in security and that the city has too much smog.

One Soviet athlete reported that he had spent the last nine years training so he could attend the 1984 Olympics. Hundreds of other athletes in that country have also spent years preparing for this summer .

Fred Jeppson, a Utahn, was but one U.S. athlete who had his hopes set on the Olympics in 1980. At the time he was considered one of the best archers in the nation and wanted to prove he was the best in the world. But when the United States pulled out of the Olympics, his dreams were shattered.

It took him almost a year to begin practicing again. Finally he set his hopes on the 1984 Olympics - he wanted to compete against the best, including the Soviets. But now, even if Jeppson makes the team, it seems he still won't be able to compete against the best archers from a// countries.

The Olympics are supposedly a time when nations are brought together. It's a time for athletes to meet and compete with the finest amateurs in their field from around the world. But this is no longer true. The events and the competitions are no longer athlete against athlete, but country against country, political leader against his counterpart.

In the 1980 Winter Olympics, when the U.S. hockey team defeated the Soviet team, the fact that the U.S. team later won the gold medal in another game didn't seem to matter. The fact that the team defeated a political enemy had become the issue.

The Olympics has become a web of political differences which has ensnared innocent athletes.

All countries should drop their political differences during the Olympics. But as it is, thousands of athletes worldwide will be affected by the decisions of the two superpowers.

The irony in it all is that these athletes, who have practiced and sacrificed to be the best, are being hurt by the very countries they want to represent.

Yes to pen-pal diplomacy What do Logan, USA, and Gusinoozersk, U.S.S.R., have in common?

A lot, according to Logan Mayor Newel Daines, whose diplomacy has recently been extended beyond the barbed-wire fences of Cache Valley politics. Daines officially recognized Gusinoozersk, a mountainous village in the southeastern reaches of the U.S.S.R., as Logan's sister city. The move opens up with the Gusinoozerskians a sort of "pen pal" relation ship in which the two communities swap cultural and social information.

It's time the United States and the Soviet Union did more of that. Swapping mugshots is much more pleasant than swapping missiles.

Photographer questions ASAC motives To the editor: Six weeks ago I was given permission

by Jennifer Anderson of the Student Activities Board (STAB) to display some photographs in the glass cases next to the SC Auditorium.

She said my display could hang from May 5 until school let out.

On Friday, May 4, I went to . the Associated Student Activities Center and obtained the keys to the display case.

Everyone in the ASAC office, including Gary Chambers and the ASAC secretaries were aware of my plans to hang the photographs the following evening.

On the afternoon of May 9, I was given a message that read: "Cedric, your display needs to be taken down because something else has been scheduled for that space. They will bring the photos to you today or tomorrow . " I couldn't help feeling that something was wrong, so I went directly to the ASAC office. Ginny Quinn, one of the secretaries told me there had been several complaints about the photographs of women oil wrestlers and male strippers and that Gary Chambers, director of the Taggart Student Center and acting director of Student Activities also mentioned there had been a mix up in the scheduling of the display cases and the photographs would

have to come down immediately.

Twenty minutes later I was in Mr. Chambers' office. In a polite and diplomatic tone, he said it was the time of year when alumni visited the campus for banquets, etc., and traditionally the STAB display cases were filled with historic photographs to help bring back many cherished memories of school days gone by. These historical photographs, according to Mr. Chambers, would help the alumni feel proud of their education here at USU. Before I left his office Mr. Chambers reassured me it was not the "controversial" nature of the photographs that brought my show down, instead it was just a matter of "somebody" scheduling the display cases inappropriately.

Please, Mr. Chambers, if you or other school authorities didn't like my photographs, tell it like it is.

For those of you who saw the photographs, you will remember that nobody was fully undressed, nor were there any private parts showing. In fact, the male strippers who came to Logan for a sell-out show wore not much less than the Mr. USU contestants, which happens to be a STAB activity where the winner is voted in by the amount of cheers he receives.

It would be important to include the fact here that there

were many women who attended the highly successlul male stripper show that wanted to buy my photographs the following day.

As for the photographs of women oil wrestlers, one was a divorcee, with two children, trying to make a living.

The point I am tryin1 to make with these photographs is that some people, giventhe opportunity, will go as far as publicly rewarding money to persons of the opposite sexfor entertainment that to most people, including someof the participants, would seemquill! bacchanal. They will even rope off an area and devise rules. In doing so, they reduce people to mere objects.

I feel badly about the w,r Gary Chambers and STAB handled the display case ordeal. The amount of dme and effort I put into preparing the show seemed hardly worthwhile. This year brings with it the presidential elections, with all the mud-slinging and the door-to-door contact of the candidates. It is also the year of the 23rd Olympiad and with 1984 being an Olympic year it also brings to our televisions, radio andthe rest of the media a mix of advertising and propaganda.

This year, however, because the games will be held in Los Angeles, we are receiving more flak then usual. And now with the threatened pullout by the Soviet Union and other Eastern bloc countries it seems the 1984 games will not be free from the political influences that have plagued the Olympics since their reorganization.

In 1980, as so many people will remember , our infamous President Jimmy Carter ordered the boycott of American athletes in the Moscow games. The reason given was the Soviet military intervention in Afghanistan. Now, four yearslater, the Afghanistan situation is still the same.

The Olympics are sacred for the athletes, who compete with their talents and not politics. Instead, the powerful governments are playing political football with the talents of the athletes.

Since the games first were recorded in Olympia in 776 B.C., they have been the site of peaceful competition between countries. Even in the early games, if two countries were at war, they stopped for the duration of the games.

So why can't a questionably civilized world put away the politics for three weeks and sit back and enjoy an ice cold lemonade in front of the boob-tube and watch the best athletes in the world - the whole world?

The Soviet Union and the United States obviously have different ideologies but these paranoid claims from the Soviet Union that their athletes will be in some kind of danger is ludicrous. Maybe the USSR is afraid the athletes might enjoy something new.

An extremist group that calls themselves Ban The Soviets said the USSR is "afraid of a large scale rash of defections which would be totally unacceptable to their ideology," and even as far back as 1981, the Soviets were planning not to

come.

They do have a point about the commercialism of the 1984 games,which will be the first Olympics to turn a profit, but the LAOOC did it without putting the country or cities in major

The city of Montreal is still paying for the high debt it encountered in the 1976 games, and though the figures are not readily availble, I dare suspect the USSR goverment is paying up tbe yinR-vang for the massive propaganda event they staged in 1980 and now in 1984.

In the 1976 games, the organizing in Montreal associated itself with 168 "offical sponsors" and in the 1980 games the Moscow committee had a whopping 300 "offical sponsors."

On the other hand the 1984 games have a mere 30 "off ical sponsors," so the LAOOC have done a lot more with out all the tedious "offical sponsors."

But having said all this, the point is the Olympics were originally for the nations to bring their best athletes and compete in a neutral atmosphere. But in their modern history they have been plagued by the politics of our modern civilization.

Although some host schools are nearly impossible to get into, Saunders said he has a good track record of placing students in their first choices. His efforts this year resulted in 10 of 11 students gaining acceptance to the universities of their choice, which include University of Oregon, University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Humboldt State University and University of Southern Maine.

Saunde r's job is to take USU students' applicatio ns to the National Placement Conference held each March for all NSE coordinators, where "exchanges are made in a big ballroom." In three rounds, host schools will review applications and accept students according to their policies and programs.

Universities comply to one or both exchange plans, ''creatively named Plan A and Plan B," Saunders said.

Plan A is a host institution waiver - that means a student goes to that institution and pays resident tuiti on ."

Plan B allows the student to pay tuition at USU before going to the other university.

"A student on financial aid can exchange on 'B' a nd still get the schola rship ," he said.

USU, which allows outside students to come in on either Plan A or Plan B. will host students this year from 20 ot her universities.

For some students, exchanging to another university could mean an opportunity to participate in a better program than their origi nal university offers .

Having lived in a coastal city with a population of about 60,000, Allen explained that "just traveling and meeting new people made it wor th it."

Although the annual deadline is the last day of February, Saunders urged interested stude nts to fill out an application and meet with him anyway.

Five more Aggies join NFL teams ByPAUL JONES sportswriter When the National Football League held its draftlast week, USU cornerback Patrick "Doc:"Allen had to wait almost nine hours before he finally received a phone call from theHouston Oilers, who drafted him in the fourthround.

Theodis Windham, a Utah State safety, had to wait more than 18 hours for his call, when theSeattleSeahawks made him their 12throundselection.

Four other Aggies - Eric McPherson, Todd Brafford, Greg Kragen and Marvin Jackson havesigned free agent contracts with the

NFL.

W-mdham said he waited by phone most of

thenight before he finally decided not to wait lllymore.

"At the beginning of the draft I wasn't sure

whatround I would go in," he said. "I waited by thephone most of the night, but as the ftlUndswent on I didn't wait anymore.

"I gave up."

Thesurprised Windham said he was reliev,e,I whenhe found out he had been drafted.

"I was relieved and happy when the phone call came," he said. "I was relieved because I didn't have to wait anymore. It really took a lot of pressure off my shoulders."

Windham said he was happy to be going to the Seahawks.

'When the Seahawks drafted me I was happy because the defensive backs coach of the Seahawks (Ralph Hawkins) came down to test me in the 40-yard dash and agilities. ''He seemed like he really liked me. I think he was one of the biggest reasons I was drafted."

McPherson, a wide receiver, signed with the New York Giants. Brafford, an offensive lineman signed with the Los Angeles Rams and Kragen, a defensive tackle, signed with the Denver Broncos, the same team which drafted USU linebacker Aaron Smith in the sixth round.

Jackson, a defensive back, said he will delay flight school in order to try out with the San Francisco 49ers, who play just 60 miles from his hometown of San Jose, Calif.

Jackson was also selected by the Philadelphia Stars in the ninth round of the recent United States Football League draft.

Bulgaria, East Germany pull out Associated Press Bulgaria on Wednesday became the first Eastern bloc country to follow the Soviet Union's example in pulling out of the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, as Americans used shuttle diplomacy in a worldwide game of wits to keep other nations in the Games.

East Germany followed suit by pulling out on Thursday.

A statement by the official Bulgarian news agency BTA said the national Olympic Committee voted "unanimously against the participation of Bulgaria in the Games because of the existence of an abnormal situation in this American city."

Bulgaria is the closest Soviet ally in the Eastern bloc.

A delegation selected by the Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee was in East Germany trying to convince officials that their athletes would be secure in Los Angeles.

Other Olympic officials were meeting in California with representatives of "three or four" countries friendly to the Soviets, the president of the organizing committee said Wednesday.

But most Eastern bloc countries and Cuba were silent on whether they planned to join the Soviet Union, which announced Tuesday it's withdrawing from the Games because of "anti-Soviet hysteria" and concerns for the safety of athletes.

It was a case of the Americans going to great lengths to keep some of their toughest opponents in the competition .

Soviet athletes captured the most medals in the past three Summer Olympics, including 1976 when nearly 40 countries boycotted the Montreal Games to protest a New Zealand rugby team's tour of South Africa, and 1980 when then-President Jimmy Carter called for a boycott of the Moscow Olympics to protest

President Reagan said in Washington Wednesday he was greatly disappointed by the Soviet decision and called it "unfair to the young people that have been waiting for so long to participate in those games.

"It ought to be remembered by all of us that the games more than 2,0CX)years ago started as a means of bringing peace between the Greek city states," Reagan said.

"And in those days, even if 1 war was going on, when Olympic year came, they called off the war in order to hold the games.

"I wish we were still as civilized."

In Paris, the Soviet ambassador to France, Yuli Vorontsov, told reporters at an art exhibition Wednesday that the Soviet walkout from the Los Angeles Olympic Games was "definite and irreversible."

But an international Olympics official said Wednesday that Juan Antonio Samaranch, president of the International Olympic Committee, will go to Moscow on Friday "to try to convince the Soviet leaders to change their mind" about participating in the Summer Games. Mario Vasquez Rana of Mexico, president of the Association of National Olympic Com• mittees, said he would be going with Samaranch.

Mayor Tom Bradley of Los Angeles said Wednesday that "the wheels are already in motion to visit Moscow if it can be arranged." He said of• ficials want to assure the Soviets of "adequate security for their athletes and their visitors."

Utah State's men's and women's track and field teams will be in action this weekend in separate conference championships.

Ralph Maughan's men's team will be in Fresno, Calif., for the Pacific Coast Athletic Association finals, with sprinter Theodis Windham and 1,500-meter performer Greg Long are considered the Aggies' best bets for firstplace finishes.

Windham has the conference's best marks in the 100 meters (10.48) and 200 meters (20.98). Long has the PCAA's top mark in the

1,500 (3,42.25) and has already qualifiedfor the NCAA championships.

Phelon , a native of Pleasant Grove, won the national junior college title in Chicago several weeks ago, completing his two-year eligibility at Northern Idaho JC in Coeur d'Alene . His 35-3 record during the past season included a 9-5 loss to USU's Williams

during an open tournament in the preseuon in Boise, Idaho.

Phelon was a two-time state high school champion for Darrell Henry at Pleasant Grove prior to embarking on a church Ill» sion and enrolling at Northern Idaho.

He is married and he and his wife, Valerie. are parents of a 1-year-old son, McKay. Phelon is the fourth scholarship signee wllli the Aggies during the current recruiting season. By JANET BENNION staff writer Picture a New York City pizza parlor. Couples hold hands across red-checkered cloth tables where spaghetti is served in a casual Italian style. In the center of the restaurant is a large platform with props, musical instruments and the Manhattan skyline bright in the back:ground.

setting, created by STAB and Student Productions Hot Box Dinner Theatre, propelled the audience into a world of gambling Casanovas and sexy-legged dance girls from the Bronx. After wiping the sauce from their mouths, the audience sat back to witness the opening scene of the broadway production Guys and Dolls.

Jan Southam, a USU theater arts junior, will act as production stage manager for the entire presentation.

"Logan had no community theater," said Anderson. "Our purpose is to do plays for the community and to use community members. Logan needed a community theater."

"Each year we plan to do a benefit for a charitable organization," said Anderson. The proceeds from "3 in the Round" will go to the Hospice of Cache Valley. last year the Valley Players did a benefit for Sunshine Terrace.

"We're a non-profit organization,'' she said, "and the money we make in the other plays goes to making more plays." She said costs for the plays they do are much less than for a regular theater. Hillcrest School is not charging to use their facilities and most of the props are donated.

The Valley Players aren't paid either. So why do they do it7 "I wanted to work with new directors," said Scott. "I am also doing it for the experience, which will eventually help my career."

Scott also said she is excited to "get out and talk with the audience." She said that in her monologue she has a chance to ask the audience questions.

Valley Players will perform "3 in the Round" May 11, 12, 18, and 19 at 8 p.m. in the Hillcrest School Media Center. Tickets are $5 and will be available at the door or by calling 753-3310.

The dinner theater was praised by its performers as an outlet for non-theater majors and as an opportunity for talented students to act.

According to Mitchell, a freshman studying political science: 'There's a lot of untapped talent out there. If there was a performance major, that's what I would be involved in." Mitchell said that the Guys and Dolls performers were representing USU students, not the USU theater department.
