I Activities planned for ummer

Summer quarter is porbably called "opportunity " quarter for several different reasons. One good reason is that the student s have the opportunity to get away from the form al atmosphere of the other quarters and really relax.

Some 850 summer quarter courses , one of the largest offerings in the United States , according to Dr . E .H. Himes , summer quarter director , get underway tomorrow .

An emphasis on a relaxed , fun, opportunity quarter is stressed by the summer quarter office but through workshops , seminars and colloquiums , they try to add an extra learning experience .

Summer workshops at USU will provide information on such topics as agricultural education , high school journalism , vocational education , international folk dance , business education and aerospace education .

Population studies, clothing and textiles , weight control and consumer experience seminars will all be held at USU this summer. Visiting professors , guest lecturers and members of the Utah State staff will participat e in these seminars .

One of the highlights of the summ er program will be the Mathematics Colloquium Series to be held from June 28 to Aug. 17. Five internationally known professors , including Professor Rudolf Mossbauer , a Nobel Prize winner from Munich, Germany , will be featured .

The major objective of the series is to present modern trend and applications of science and mathematics at a level which can be understood by a

general university audience ," Grant Gill Smith , Chemistry professor and chairman of the colloquium, stated .

Recreation Plann ed

Recreation and entertainment has also been planned for those attending summer school and their familie s.

Traditional ice cream socials and watermellon busts are planned during the upcoming weeks . Also the UC movies ¡held during the regular school year will continue throughout the summer.

Summer quart er gives the theatre department a chance to produce several productions during the three months . This year "Hay F ever, " "The Deadly Game " and "The Odd Couple" will presented at the Old Lyric Repertory Theatre . The plays will alternate weeks and all performances will be on Thursday and Frida y nights.

In addition a Reader 's Theatre featuring work of D.H. Lawrence will be held on Jun e 23, in the FAC. Over 15,000people came to the Utah Stat e campu s last summ er for classes , se minars , workshops a nd special features.

Bookstore shortens hours The bookstore will be closed on Saturdays beginning June 12, Dean Haslam , bookst ore manager, has announced. It will continue with this procedure for the remainder

Outdoor program

Invaders breed confusion Eight thousand students may magically disappear at the end of final week but what reappears on Monday morning is an even stranger phenomena.

In one area of the campus the classrooms are invaded by a group of secondary school teachers learning new and modern up-to-date things about the new ~rop of students they're teaching.

"Excuse me is this the third floor of the F-Z AUD," a gray-haired lady in a blue knit suit asks the University Center Receptionist.

Conferences, seminars and workshops attract every type of person to the campus , especially the confused.

A group of new workshopers can be seen being led by the pied piper of their group , a person who has been to the workshop seven consecutive years.

She knows where all rooms are located, where the ice cream building is located and that it's cheaper to eat upstairs than in the Hub. Only about 3,500registered students will attend summer school classes yet some 12,000 people will invade the campus for workshops, seminars, etc.

They come to learn about just about every area but the most common topic at any meeting is usually one like " new processes of thinking and learning subjects of value in the modern world" or "a n experience in the experiment of new processes in advanced areas of processed thinking'' or other similarly ambiguous areas.

A large portion of the 12,000 will be high school students attempting to get a glimpse at college life before entering it themselves. They will be singing, dancing, marching and toe-tapping during their week 's stay at USU. Numerous activities are scheduled so that there is plenty to do for the "y oungsters" and so that they'll see that USU is the school for them.

A guided tour of Logan is planned in a Cook Transportation Bus along with a visit to the famous ice cream building for some of that great ice cream from the contended USU cows. They live in the dorms and eat in the dorm cafeterias, just like real college stt,dents.

If you watch the signs you'll be able to spot the invaders this summer. The girls wear dresses and the boys wear slacks and suits , not cut-off levis and barefeet. And each one will be carrying a blue USU folaer. The dead giveaways are the ones who wear their nametags.

It's not really fair to dislike these people because they 're confused so if you see one with a_nametag, go up and say hello, and if you don't want to feel in the minority you might wear one yourself.

Professors

to visit USU for summer

The sociology department at USU will feature Dr. William H. Hale as its guest professor during the first session of summer quarter.

Dr. Hale will be teaching modern social problems and minority grou~ relations in the sociology department .

He is presently the president of Langston University, in Langston, Oklahoma. He received his bachelor 's degree from that university, his master's degree in sociology from the University of Wisconsin and a Ph.D degree in sociology from the University of Chicago.

Served On Board

A former member of the board of directors of the Atlanta Association for Mental Health and a former advisor to the pre-alumni group of the United Negro College Fund, Hale was cited as one of the outstanding contributors to the field of higher education by Ebony Magazine.

He is presently a member of the Oklahoma Curriculum Improvement Commission, the Commission on

Cache Valley has always had the fine mountains, the clear running rivers, the open fields, and the teeming marsh ; now there are people ready to share their knowledge of these things, to show others who wish to hear the wilderness speaking, to smile together as the sun comes up or goes down, to eat lunch together under a pinion pine, to watch a brown trout feeding (and learn how to catch him), to commune with Mother Nature, to seek, to share, to know each other, to learn how to: shoot a bow and arrow, read a topo map, climb a mountain, survive in summer mountains, track a deer, paddle a canoe, find a fossil, or tote a back pack .

This is the Outdoor Program at USU. By your seeking and your sharing it will grow.

Editors note : The outdoor program is open to everyone, experienced people as well as the unskilled.

Activities such as hiking, backpacking, fishing, canoeing, spelunking, bow and arrow hunting, bicycling and outdoor cooking are offered. Information is available in the Activities Center for those who would like to participate this summer.

Other Professors

Several other visiting professors, as listed in the summer catalogue, are scheduled to teach classes or seminars at USU this summer.

Dr. Sidney Goldstein, Brown University, will participate in the Institute in Population Studies. Also involved in the Institute are Dr. Charles F. Westoff, Princeton University and Dr. James R. Mapstone, SUNY.

Dr. Robert W. Venable, SUNY, will teach an introductory course on the history of the American Indian and a graduate colloquium on the American Indian .

Several departments will be hosting guest professors including the Business, Education, Psychology, Family Life, Engineering, and Science departments . Information on these individuals is in the summer bulletin or available in the department.

USU BRIEFS Artist's work in Japan One of Japan's leading art outlets will show pottery

by Larry Elsner, Utah State University artist, in an art show and sale June 15-20.

Professor Elsner will be in Japan for three weeks helping to set up and promote the show and to be present during it.

Isetan Department Store, on of Tokyo's largest, will run the display. The store has nearly an entire floor permanently devoted to art. In Japan department stores are most active in art sales, more than private galleries, according to Professor Elsner, who worked in Japan on sabbatical leave from Utah State .

Elsner has prepared 100pots which have been sent to Japan. He and his wife, Yoko, a native of Japan, will arrive there prior to the show's opening.

Speaker featured this week Dr. William Moore, Jr., President of Sea ttle Central Community College , will be a featured speaker on the USU campus June 16 and 17, according t.o Dr . Ellvert H. Him es, Director of the Summer Quarter.

President Moore, an outspoken champion of the potentiality of higher education , will speak to University administrators, faculty, and gradµate stu dents on topics of im portance to Utah State University a nd higher education in the nation.

Traffic rules enforced Campus traffic rules and regulations will be in effect during summer quarter and will be strictly enforced, according to Edwin Lindbloom, USU traffic director .

Parking decals may be purchased at the traffic office at the south end of Plant Operation from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Printed traffic regulations are also available at this office.

Student and faculty decals issued previously are valid until Sept. 1 and need not be renewed for Summer quarter, Lindbloom noted.

He· also added that special permits for loading and unloading are available without cost for students and faculty.

Folk dance workshop set A nationally prominent leader in folk dance will be the guest instructor during a two-week workshop for. beginning and experienced folk dancers at Utah State June 21 - July 2.

Miriam Lidster, folk dance director at Stanford University and a leader in the California Federation of Folk Dance, will teach the first week of the workshop.

Prof. Lidster has traveled throughout the world studying folk dance and its related arts. She is coauthor of Folk Dance Progressions, a college folk dance text.

Vonnie R. Brown, director of the USU Folk Dancers and instructor of physical education at USU, will teach the second week of the course.

The workshop is designed for persons interested in recreational folk dance as well as for those who are teaching folk dance. During the first week special emphasis will be placed on teaching folk dancing in elementary school.

Participants may register for one week for one credit or bothweeksfor two credits. Daily sessions will be held in room 102of the USU Health, Physical Education and Recreationbuilding from 8:30 to 11:30a.m. and 1:30 to4 p.m.

He will be speaking by invitation to administr ator and faculty members at a dinner on June 16 and a luncheon on June 17. The speec hes will be held in the Walnut a nd Sage rooms.

Utah painting wins award Everett Thorpe, Utah State University professor of art and one of Utah's leading artists , has been named the winner of the $1,000prize and purchase award in the Utah Painting '71 exhibition on display through Labor Day in the rotunda of the Utah State Capitol.

"Winter Landscape" is the title of Prof . Thorpe's winning oil and acrylic painting which now belongs to Utah's permanent art collection. The artist said the scene was painted from Clarkston Mountain, Cache Valley.

"This is the most distinguished Utah art prize of the year," said Dr . Twain Tippetts, curator of USU galleries.

Sixty-five paintings were selected for display from 350 submitted to the annual contest, sponsored by the Utah State Institute of Fine Arts.

Within the last four years, three USU art faculty members have won the contest purchase prize. Recent USU winners have been Adrian Van Suchtelen, 1968; Harrison Groutage, 1970; and Prof . Thorpe .

Listed as raised in the ghetto and a two-time high school drop out, Dr. Moore has had a distinguished record of com mun ity college service and has recently been appointed as pr ofessor of higher education at Ohio State University.

His academic achievements include a BA and MA in Education and his PhD in psychology .
