This building , so beautifully planned and structured.should be used with the purpose in mind , that too much of our energy which we could use , we waste on spectator events. This building is built with a purpose for activities which will hopefully use our energy."

Unite Community "The purpose of this center," said Alan Crowshaw, ASUSU president, "should be to unite the community and the campus . It runs second to none in regard to its beauly and the facilities which it offers."

In December, the center was opened and used for basketball games and the first general activity was the speech made by LOS president Joseph Fielding c;mith.

Great Problems Hanks said today's great problems involve sagging spirits, coarsening of society , drug ad dicts, and barbarians. He quoted an editorial which stated that the world would unite if we uncovered, in outer space, some creatures who would attack.

Then in an effort to save ourselves, we would have to unite to fight back. This Hanks sa id, "Was a very cy"nical point of view. We have in this country, blessings of a strong political system, an equalized economic system and power of young people. " "Th is land is blessed," he added , "we have strong homes and good families who desire to pass on the great heritage of our nation. Those who inherit the problems an d struggles will have to be strong and have the leadership developed on university campuses through educat ion."

ASUSU to hold war learn - ,n e

ASUSU Activity Board will sponsor a 'learn-in' on Vietnam war during the week of March 8-12.The week is titled: "The Faces of War" The board will act as sole sponsors, not affiliated with any political body on campus , to encour1,1ge the studentbody to attend the various activities aimed at developing a better understanding of the Vietnam conflict.

The idea for the week stemmed from a proposal submitted by the Student Mobilization Committee asking the Executive Council to support a resolution asking for the immediate withdrawal of all troops from Southeast Asia.

Vote Proposed

Members of the council folt that it would be better to have a period of discussion on the war and then ask for student opinion by a referendum vote.

The purpose of this week is "merely educational concerning, all aspects of war," stated Paul Michaelson, administrative vice-president.

"The week as outlined is not to be construed as an anti-war week, nor is it to be considered as pro-Nixon.

Rather , it's purpose is to educate students concerning the different attitudes , responsibilities, effects, and the like, of war," Michaelson added .

Agnew May Speak

The week's activities will include panel discussions, films, lectures , and a tele-lecture. Hopefully, the telelecture will feature Vice-President Agnew as the speaker .

The referendum vote to be held on March 12at the end of the week, will be conducted by the IK's under the administration of the Student Activity Board.

Questions to be considered are now under study by political scientists to insure no bias .

1971 Providing the average student with the type of lectures and concerts he wants is the job of a university, but the committees in charge at USU have become so wrapped up in trying to piease everyone that they now appear 01>11v1ous to what students at this university would like for entertainment.

This year's concerts and lectures at USU would reaffirm an "outsider's" observation that Utah State students still play Four Freshmen records on the juice box in the Hive and return to the farm every night to milk their cows.

Universities not more than 100 miles to the north or south of USU have this year brought in progressive musical groups and singers, not to mention current liberal political speakers of interest to students.

For instance, this year the University of Utah has established a Contemporary Issues class where they have sponsored speakers such as Bernadette Devlin and Kate Millett. And if you don't recognize these names then you know why we fell it imperative to expose USU .st\Jdents to them.

If the planning committees would open their eyes, they would see that the majority of students on the USU campus are not the ivy league scholar of the early 60's, but a new student of the 70's.

USU students are not so isolated that they have missed hearing about top rock groups or current issues although it seems as if controlling elements at USU are trying to "protect" the student from thzse outside influences.

Rock groups such as The Guess Who and singers such as Neil Young, play at universities around Logan, but completely skip over the top of this entertainment armpit of the Intermountain West.

Students are no longer satisfied with entertainment like Roger Williams, Rouvan, and the Lettermen, who are fine entertainers in their own right, but tend to become monotonous. These people have been scheduled for every major event at USU this year.

Moneyspent for a myriad of mediocre speakers and a series of out-dated entertainers should be channeled so that at the end of the year , a student can look back and remember at least one event that he truly enjoyed and that wasn't just an "all rigpt" performance.

One of the more undesir able aspects of the "New" left is the attempt to bring about a politicization of the college community.

The "political" university is a feature of some European and Soutli American campuses and 'has always been a detriment to the community that is usually paying for them .

Becoming the center for radical-reactionary types , it is only a matter of time until the irresponsible fringe takes control, and with their rule-or-ruin philosophy, it is only a matter of time until there are demonstrations, nonfunctioning colleges , troops on campus, misjudgments on the part of one side or another and deaths, mJury, property damage and disorder . Everyone loses except the "nut" fringe who now have a cause celebre .

The college campus is not the appropriate place for the political process under any circumstances, but especially not so when there is an adequate political process operating as we have here in the United States. Of course, the radicals swing on the word "adequate" in the above phrase our American electoral process is inadequate and therefore they are justified in any means to change it.

But when they say "inadequate" what they are really objecting to is the fact of majority rule.

They don't like the way the majority is conducting the. ~ffairs of the body pohtic so they are going to burn it all down. It matters not to them that they haven't the foggiest as to

According to former Peace Corps volunteer Barkley Moore, the important thing today is not speech making and "philosophizing," but "getting out and doing something."

The six-year volunteer spoke on his work in the northern part of Iran to Utah State Friday in the midst of an appearancepacked schedule. He told an audience in Old Main that "we don't have to want to revolutionize the world, but should be willing to go out and if we help just one other person, and really make a difference in his life, then it has been worth trying ."

Colonel Holm is leader or a movement tn the Air Force to revitalize its program for women in uniform . The new program includes an expansion of the number of WAF, new job opportunities and assignment locations for enlisted women, and development of modern unilorm design.

by Dr. Allison Thorne, lecturer in College of Family Life, on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. in the Sunburst lounge.

Voting for AWS officers will take place Thursday and Friday.

The week will end with the annual Preference Ball , "We've Only Just Begun, " with the sounds of the Love Syndicate.

Most Preferred Man and Miss Congeniality and the new AWS officers will be announced during intermission.

Cheating not too effective Cheating on campus has been investigated by the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences college council.

Through the investigatio n , council members have confirme d the belief that although cheating does exist on campus, peers trim the effectiveness considerable.

Council found that students attempting to cheat are strongly discouraged through peer group pressure.

Although there is no means to adequately measure the amount of cheating done outside of class, council found that a minimum amount is tolerat ed by students.

If he is not satisfied, a committee of two faculty members and one student is formed to consider the grievance. Final action is taken by the university president af ter recommendation by the grievance committee.

Education college experiment

'Innovative' program honored The College of Education's new "rig ht on" commencement ceremony -- possibly the first of its kind - will be shown at a national conference in March.

Dr . Don C. Smellie, associate professor in the instructional medi a and library science department , says the multimedia pre sentation is scheduled for showing at the national conference of the Association for Educational Communication and Technology . The AECT national wint er conference will be in Philadelphia March 21-27.

USU' s innovating graduation ceremony will be shown to the association twice, once to a special interest group of association members, once to the entire group in general sess ion.

Afterward , it will be shown at Slippery Rock State Teachers College, Slippery Rock , Pa .

"We feel this is probably the first multimedia approach to the graduation ceremony across the country ," said Dr. Smellie, who collaborated with Dr. Ross R. Allen, associate professor of secondary education, in writing the script.

Show' s Creation The show was created for 1970 College of Education commencement at the suggestion of Dr. Oral L .

His plan was to create a commencement ceremony that "got out of the old rut ... told the story in an int eresti ng, up-to-date manner ... involved students more."

It made use of three, nine-foot screens, three slide projectors, two 16 mm movie projectors and a sound tape.

Ecologist to give lecture USU Ecology Center will present Dr . David Goodall in an address tomorrow at 12:30 p.m. in FZ 302.

Goodall is director of the Desert Biome program.

He received a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of London in plant physiology and a diploma of Imperial College of Science and Technology in London. He holds a Doctor of Science degree from the University of Melbourne.

Goodall has lectured at the University of Melbourne and the University of Gold Coast. He was a professor of agricultural botany at the University of Reading, then directed tobacco research at Queensland, Australia. He was senior principal research scientist in the division of mathematical statistics in Perth and an honorary reader in botany at the University of Western Australia. Before coming to USU, Dr. Goodall taught at the University of California at Irvine.

Dr. Go odall will discuss " Building an d Testing Eco system Models" at the Ecology Lecture. The seminar is open to the public.

Criminal law code passed Boise (AP) - The Idaho House passed Friday, 42-25, a 96-page recodification of the s tate 's criminal code, attacked on the floor as a weakening of the state's sex laws.

The bill would eliminate adultery and homosexual acts between consenting adults as crimes.

"Whe n yo u legal~ze homosexuality you are saymg 'co me out into the open'," said Rep. Wayne Loveless, DPocatello, one of the bill's opponents. "If you keep these offenses on the books you'll at least keep them hidden from the public ."

Rep. Clyde Keithly, R-Na mpa, floor sponsor, said the interim committee, which has been studying the revision for four years, found there has been few or no convictions of adultery and homosexuality for years "des pite the fact that 11 divorces were granted for adultery in one county alone."

Both the fraternity and club leagues are yet to name a winner of the basketball round-robins, although Ivins Hall became the Dorm League champ with a 33-31 victory over High Rise 4 last Thursday night.

It'll be Sigma Chi versus Pl Kappa Alpha at 7 p .m ., In the Fieldhouse for the fraternity league title ; while Joe 's Boys collide with the Canadians for the Club League title at 8 p.m. In a battle for third and fourth place, MASH will play Newman Center at 8 p.m .

Todd Taggart, who scored ten points in the third per iod, was th e key In Sigma Chi's amazing comeback to victory. The Slgs trailed 11-2early In the game but roared back to take a 16-15 halftime lead .

Taggart, who finished with 13 points, tipped In a shot to give SX a 30-27 lead with les s than two minutes to play, but a basket by Stan Peterson of PKA made it 3029. Tyler McNeil hit one free throw to give Sigm a Chi a 31-29 lead and PKA blew two opportunit ies to tie the game when Gary Glenn and Petersen had traveling violations whistled on them. P etersen missed a shot with six seconds left that could have given PKA the title . Now they are forced into a do-or-die game tomorrow night. McNeil had ten points for SX, while Petersen led PKA with nine.

The Inside height advantage of Jim Nelson and Joe Franson gave Joe's Boys a 63-50 victory over MASH Thursday night .

MASH held a 30-29 lead in the second half but with Nelson and Franson scoring almost at will , Joe's Boys advanced to the finals

against the Canadians .

Nelson took game scoring honors with 21 points, although Dave Shipp (17 points) and Randy Christensen (13 points) played fine games for the losers.

The Canadians reached the finals by whipping Newman Center 44-38. The Canadians are undefeated .

Frank Toddre canned 15 points to lead the Canadians attack , while Bob Green added 10. Ron Rhodes had 13 ror the losers .
