ailors aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) hosted a friends and family day cruise with more than 1,000 visitors in attendance.

The day-long event gave Sailors an opportunity to give their loved ones a tour of the ship and show how the different departments contribute to the ship’s mission.

“The day trip provides an opportunity for family and friends to participate in our daily shipboard routine while we are at sea,” said Capt.

Timothy Kuehhas, George Washington’s commanding officer. “It provides an excellent opportunity for our crew to demonstrate the pride and professionalism with which they carry out their demanding duties in defense of our great nation.”

To show the audience some of the carrier team’s capabilities, the Flying Eagles of Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 122 and the Nightdippers of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 5, presented air demonstrations to the guests on the ship’s flight deck.

For several of the guests, it was their first time aboard an aircraft carrier.

“I’ve been on a ship tour, but this is my first time with the ship at sea,” said Mariana Zakhidna, a friend of Seaman Joshua Dufrane. “I was most surprised by the vapor cloud from the sonic boom when

the jet broke the sound barrier because I’ve never seen anything like that before.”

Additionally, George Washington’s Morale, Welfare, and Recreation Department provided entertainment in the ship’s hangar bay.

“The day has been a wonderful source of camaraderie,” said Megan Villapudua, George Washington’s fun boss. “We’ve got a lot of children on board, so we’re providing a climbing wall, caricature drawing, family photos, mini golf, a ring-toss game, and ship memorabilia.”

A significant amount of teamwork and forethought ensured the event’s success.

“There was a lot of planning and moving parts involved,” said Lt. Cmdr. David Hart, the friends and family day coordinator. “All 20 departments contributed.

From security keeping everybody safe to engineering displaying their firefighting gear, every Sailor worked hard to make today memorable.”

Also, Kip Sieber, a retired WWII pilot was in attendance.

“It has been a completely phenomenal experience, and I’d love to come back.” said Sieber. “It’s fun to see the next generation of crewmen on the carrier.”

JUST SAILORS HELPING SAILORS

he Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions, commomly known as CSADD is designed to be a Sailor-helping-Sailor association.

The program is geared toward Sailors E-5 and below and between the ages of 18 to 25.

Aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73), CSADD p r o v i d e s a pivotal role in the morale of the junior Sailor community by creating v a r i o u s activities in which Sailors can participate.

“I oversee events our command’s C S A D D chapter puts together,” said Chief Petty Officer Maurice Nix, the coordinator of the ship’s C S A D D program. “My main focus is to motivate the members of CSADD and make sure information they put out and events they conduct, that the command message is being passed.”

CSADD Sailors create ways to boost morale and pass on important messages to their shipmates.

“Putting out the command message to Sailors E-5 and below is

our main goal,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Nicole Lopez, the ship’s CSADD president. “We also find out how to best get messages to the crew. The feedback we get back is then formulated into a plan, and I present it to the Command Master Chief (CMC).”

Lopez said, that just because an idea is agreed upondoes not mean

CMC will agree. If an idea is not approved CSADD will go back to the drawing board and represent an idea.

“We have to make sure junior Sailors see what they want to see and that it is approved at the command level,” said Lopez. “The talent show was a challenging event to organize because of all the red flags that could have popped

up. Instead, it was a huge success and people came out and showed support.”

Morale boosts are needed when a ship is underway and the Sailors on board are missing their families among other things. Events like talent shows break up the monotony of being underway, and people get a chance to relax and have fun.

As the coordinator, Nix said keeping Sailors from making destructive decisions is paramount.

To facilitate these trainings, C S A D D performs skits geared towards s p e c i f i c scenarios like drinking and driving, SAPR, and equal opportunity.

“It would be hard for junior Sailors to sit through a PowerPoint presentation and walk away retaining what was presented,” said Nix. “But having fellow shipmates perform the scenarios live adds a level of reality and relatability that PowerPoints don’t offer.”

George Washington was the CSADD chapter of the year in 2014. Be prepared for CSADD to cook something up for the October underway.

ailors and Navy support organizations hosted a health and wellness fair Sept. 30 to inform the crew of the aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) about the options they have to better their health and safety.

The fair took place in the ship’s hangar bay, and included representatives from the Fleet and Family Support Center (FFSC), the Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society, Tricare and Naval Medical Center Portsmouth. The topics discussed related to their organization and specialties,

which collectively focused on the betterment of Sailors’ health and financial decisions.

“There are different aspects of our lives that we kind of neglect,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Theo Delorey, a Sailor in the ship’s Medical Department who was responsible for inviting the organizations’ representatives to the ship. “This is a great opportunity for Sailors to come together, meet each other and learn about these aspects. Our mission is all about readiness; making sure Sailors are healthy.”

Liz Hengerer, a command support specialist from FFSC, said that some Sailors might not know what opportunities are available to them for riskprevention, financial support or other guidance. There are facilities all over the Hampton Roads area that can provide such support.

“This is the best part of my job,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Ananda Stevenson, who is assigned to the ship’s Medical Department. “If we can affect even just one Sailor, then we can have a trickling effect that could reach more in the Fleet.”
