my curiosity, and I took a closer look at his art and added some others of his pieces to my collection. Among the artist’s pictures that I hold is one of the few oil paintings on canvas that he ever made (Pavel mostly used hardboard, applying a fairly unusual technique of his own invention). This piece is somewhere half way between his graphic works and paintings – polychromatic and with a variety of forms, but already having the look of an accomplished work. Created in 1979, this distemper image still has a colour, but this colour is already of a pale hue, the numerous skimpily outlined figures are intricately intertwined with abstract geometrical forms, and the entire composition soars in a milk-white symbolic space. Pavel Nikiforov called the piece “Energy Games” – the title alludes to the entropy mentioned above. This truly energetic image already has apparent marks of disintegration and decay, and the composition soaring in space will inevitably turn, sooner or later, into a symbolic minimalist sign against the neutral backdrop of the infinite Universe. It would be correct to say that Pavel Nikiforov’s art is a pictorial illustration of the second law of thermodynamics…
