Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are increasingly being embraced by individuals, businesses, and governments, as increasing efficiency and productivity allow exponential growth in some sectors of the global economy. However, the gap between efficiency and productivity among those sectors and businesses that benefit from AI and ML is also widening. The implications of having a handful of countries that control sophisticated AI in the future are profound. On the one hand, these technologically advanced countries may become the true guardians of AI, with considerable resources being allocated to its development on a long-term basis. It is also certain that the leading companies in these countries will achieve a more significant lead in the global financial sector, giving them a considerable competitive advantage. The militaries of these countries will become the primary beneficiaries of AI technology in the future, promoting the global race for superior autonomous weapons and steering the world toward dangerous new ways of war.

The single dominant economic polarity, basic technology and the familiar economic model of popular governance are slowly being replaced by multi-polarity. Companies need to largely fix patterns, technologies, and governance rules. Data highways are becoming new shipping routes. Cloud storage is gradually replacing shipping containers and warehouses. Decentralization and digitization similarly replace traditional communications and transactions.

How do we transform from the level of our collective familiarity and comfort to a world dominated by what we cannot see or feel with tangible, physical objects?

Silicon’s exponential progress-driven new global financial flows are already creating major disruptions in economies around the world. Online platforms are more important than physical products.

For example, the world’s largest currency repository is run by cryptocurrencies and there are no buildings or physical safeguards. All are driven by software, which is based on knowledge and processes captured by automation.

In the ML era, the realm of science fiction, in recent times, is how to transform from the current economic model — conventional manufacturing and fossil fuels — into a technology-driven new model.

How do we transform from the level of our collective familiarity and comfort to a world dominated by what we cannot see or feel with tangible, physical objects? We are already moving into the cyber world, where virtual reality is not only upon us but for many of us.

We are attracted to this brave new world because it equals us with opportunities. The world of AI that awaits us does the same.

Traditional knowledge suggests that AI benefits highly skilled workers with greater flexibility, creativity, and stronger problem-solving skills, but it is certainly possible — and even so — that AI-powered robots can displace highly educated and skilled professionals such as doctors, architects, and computer programmers.

Much more thought and research need to be devoted to exploring the links between the technological revolution and other important global trends, including demographic changes such as aging and migration, climate change and sustainable development.

Many of these topics have not yet been broached or become a meaningful topic of discussion in the Global Forum.

Instead of being used to flatten the level of global equality, the AI-dominated future leads to the greatest concentration of resources and energy the world has ever known.

While AI’s growing ability to automatically solve complex problems is fundamentally clear to be able to rebuild our economies and societies, the impact that AI will have on overall problems is unknown for many years to come. While the answers seem to be in focus, AI is on par with the amoeba, a state of constant transformation, forever changing its shape and aligning with its surroundings.

As the implications of the AI revolution on the global order begin to be contemplated, it is not difficult to imagine a future where power, resources, and technology are more concentrated than they already are.
