USM Received Historical and Personal Objects of Federico Santa María Carrera

Una serie de objetos personales que pertenecieron a Federico Santa María Carrera serán las nuevas piezas que integrarán el Museo Institucional de la USM, gracias a una importante donación realizada en Estados Unidos por la viuda de uno de sus familiares, que permitirá continuar salvaguardando el legado de quien hoy es recordado como uno de los hombres más destacados del país. Los bienes legados a la Universidad consisten en un baúl y su contenido: una colección de piezas de plata inglesa y cubiertos adquiridos alrededor de 1905, el reloj de bolsillo de Federico Santa María Carrera y la partitura del himno de la Escuela de Artes, Oficios e Ingeniería de la Fundación Santa María, además de cuatro retratos de los padres del fundador de la USM (dos de ellos de Juan Antonio Santa María Artigas y los otros dos de Magdalena Carrera Aguirre) y una foto de Federico Santa María con su madre. Esta será la primera vez que nuestra Universidad posea artículos que pertenecieron a Federico Santa María, y que ahora se suman a los que ya exhibe el Museo Institucional, entre los que destacan diversas fotografías, documentos y objetos antiguos que contienen información sobre los aspectos más relevantes de la historia de la USM.

A collection of personal objects that belonged to Mr. Federico Santa María Carrera are the new pieces that will be added to the Institutional Museum of the USM, thanks to an important donation made in the United States by the widow of a relative of Mr. Federico Santa María Carrera. This will allow to protect the heritage of who is considered one of the most renowned men of Chile. The pieces donated to the university are a trunk and all its content: a collection of British silver pieces and silverware from around 1905, the pocket watch of Mr. Federico Santa María Carrera and the sheet music of the School of Arts, Crafts and Engineering hymn of the Santa María Foundation, as well as four portraits of the parents of the USM’s founder (two of them from Mr. Juan Antonio Santa María Artigas and two from Ms. Magdalena Carrera Aguirre) and a picture from Mr. Federico Santa María with his mother. This is the first time that the university has pieces that belonged to Mr. Federico Santa María, and they will be added to collection of the Institutional Museum where different pictures, documents and old pieces with information about the most relevant aspects on the history of the USM stood out. Historic milestone Due to the importance of these patrimonial objects, Mr. Darcy Fuenzalida, Rector of the USM, traveled to Nueva York, United States to sign the document that certifies this donation given by Ms. Katherine Wadsworth, widow of Mr. Jorge Andrés Délano Rodríguez, son of Ms. Lucía Santa María Carrera, sister of the founder of the university. In this respect, the rector of the USM, Mr. Darcy Fuenzalida stated the importance of this great donation: “We are deeply grateful for this invaluable contribution which includes personal objects of our founder. Mr. Federico Santa María is a person valued and respected by all members of this institution, and each of these items allow us to continue with the noble task of keeping his heritage alive and bring him closer to the new students”.
