USMMA NEWS Annual Meeting with USMMA President Jeff Bosley The USMMA Annual Meeting held the meeting live at the MM booth at the Mane Event, Westworld, Scottsdale, AZ on March 30, 2018.

With the use of Zoom conferencing software, members from the US and Canada could also join in via phone or computer. Also attending the meeting were members of the USMMA board: Alessandra Deerinck, CA, Randy Conilogue, AZ, Aline Greene, SC (phone), Lynn Kelley, AZ, Rick Schatz, OK and Aline Greene, SC. Jeff Bosley, USMMA President, thanked his Board of Directors and the Mane Event organizers for their contributions above and beyond. He thanked all who were in attendance as well, which was over 20% of our membership!

USMMA NEWS Registry News by Randy Conilogue, Registrar I joined as Registrar in June 2017. Unfortunately, for me and for the USMMA, Wikihorse, which had powered our Registration system an database went out of business. Lucky for us, we had a backup database with which we began anew. Highlights from the year are in the Annual Report, but I thought you would like to take a look at the new registration document as well. .

One of the sad parts of registration is hearing about the death or our beloved Marchador horses.

Lost recently are imported Marchadors: Mabi do Vale Vermelho, Pupila de Itajoana, Vedete de Itajoana, Vicosa de Itajoana and Quevado FAD.

The Registration Process • Each time a horse is transferred or registered, if it is dual registered with the ABCCMM, we check the lineage of the horse in Brazil against the data in our database as well as check the Sire and Dam with the UC Davis DNA test. The lineage in updated in the database to reflect the ABCCMM data and in many cases shows more ancestors in the family tree then before. We also check the ABCCMM Elite Book (MM7 and MM8) status and enter this into the database and print it onto the Registration Certificate.

• We enter into the database UC Davis VGL DNA case number, microchip number, add the Horses name registered with the ABCCMM if different than the USMMA, ask the owner for stallion sex changes, color & markings changes and record, check and correct the USMMA and ABCCMM registration numbers if missing or inaccurate, add the Brazilian letter accents to names, update the previous owners info and add breeder info if it is missing.

• Finally, we print the certificate from the database and mail to the owners. I also email a PDF copy of the Certificate to the new owner.

Between the time that WikiHorse disappeared and before the Google Sheets database was ready for use, Lynn Kelley helped by entering new registration data into http://HorseManager.com. You can use that for online horse look-up. Lynn will try to keep it up-to-date until the USMMA database is on-line. Thank you Lynn for all your hard work in updating the US Marchador Registration Database and helping me get started in his new role. And many Thanks to Megan Fallwell for her many years of service as our USMMA Registrar.

USMMA NEWS Special Election - Secretary We are struggling without someone taking Alessandra Deerinck’s place as Secretary (Alessandra moved to Vice President) and therefore, I have decided to hold a Special Election for the the sole purpose of adding a new Secretary. If you are interested in running for this office, please fill out this form to submit your name and your qualifications. In order to serve, you must own a Mangalarga Marchador horse and be a current USMMA member as of 4/1/2018.

The deadline for submitting your nomination is 5/11/18 and the election will be held the following week. In the event, that only one person volunteers, we reserve the right to appoint that individual without an election.

The Secretary is responsible for announcing, planning and organizing the Board of Director meetings and making sure that the meeting is minuted properly. They maintain the effective records and governing documents of the association. This position requires strong organizational skills, computer savvy and good writing skills too. Knowing Roberts Rules of Order is a plus.

ABCCMM/USMMA NEWS New Chairman Announced for MMForeign Trade and Development The ABCCMM would like to introduce you Flavio Tavares Fernandes. Mr. Tavares is the Chairmen of the Foreign Trade and Development Committee of the National Brazilian Breeders Association.

This commission was created by Daniel Borja, our current ABCCMM President, in order to promote and develop the Mangalarga Marchador breed across the world.

Flavio is a veterinarian specialized in equine reproduction and a Margalarga Marchador horse breeder in Brazil. He´s also the former CEO of the Breeders Association of Mangalarga Marchador of Rio de Janeiro (ACCMMERJ).

Flavio will be residing in Ocala, FL in 2018. In conversations between the USMMA and Flavio, he says some of his top priorities are: • Easier exportation / importation of live animals, semen and embryos from Brazil.

• Introduction of MM breeders in Brazil that want to export products • Promoting the MM breed around the world.

MEMBER NEWS Meet Yanza InMotion!

by Sandy Dory, Sublime Marchadors, AB I’ve got a Mangalarga Marchador named Yansa InMotion. She

isn’ t the biggest horse in the barn, and she’s sweet, feminine, and so very friendly. That’s what I knew. She was never “broke”. It wasn’t necessary. She just seemed to accept that carrying a saddle and then, me in the saddle was a natural progression. She made me laugh at her lack of antics. Such a cool chick.

Naturally, certain aggressive rocks and shady shadows caused her to hesitate and give them the “look”. I can respect that.

With experience, these things weren’t as scary and she was willing to share trails and roadways with bicycles, quads and yes, even deer.

Nothing prepared me for what she wanted to show me when we arrived in Arizona this fall. She wasn’t content to be behind the boys on the trails, she wanted to be in front of them all. And, she can go a distance. We were training for her first 30 mile Endurance Ride, and I would ride her 10 to 12 miles on average every other day at a pretty good clip. The more we rode, the higher her energy level became.

Game day. Land of the Sun Endurance Ride, Boyd Ranch, Wickenburg, Arizona. The first 20 mile loop of this ride was extremely technical. So many rocky hills to climb, switchbacks on the downhills and deep sandy washes. She ate it up and asked for more. At the mid point vet check she pulsed down like an Arabian! When her pulse was taken, I even said, “so should we wait a few minutes and try her again?”. The pulser said, “no, she’s down”. I was thrilled!

Second loop, 12 miles (not all rides are exactly 30 miles). A flatter terrain, not as many hills and rocks. We kept up to Nashville, my 7 year old grey ridden by my bestie Corina Voll, 11

who were in the lead, won, and got Best Condition in the 30 mile ride.

We finished in second place. Second… in her first race ever!

My little Amazon has found her passion. I’m so excited to see where we will go from here.

MEMBER NEWS April 7th, the Greatest Calvagada - Caxambu, MG, Brazil published in Revista Horse. https://www.revistahorse.com.br/imprensa/mangalargamarchador-faz-cavalgada-historia-mas-fica-fora-do-guinness/ 20180410-100606-s929 The Association of Horse Breeders Mangalarga Marchador (ABCCMM) achieved a historic feat on Saturday, April 7, in Caxambú (MG) — “ The Greatest Cavalgada of the World of a single breed”. With a set of pre-established rules, the Guinness Book organization (Official Records) has validated as official numbers 1568 horses and riders, only 32 less than the 1600 goal previously established by the Guinness organization to set an official new world record.. But even that did not take away the enthusiasm of the organizers and participants, who had a great party in the friendly city of the south of Minas, considered the cradle of the race.

"We have to thank everyone who sacrificed themselves to come here and show all the strength of the Mangalarga Marchador.

You really show that they are passionate about the breed, because there was no awards here and all the support was spontaneous," said the creator of the initiative, Marcelo Baptista de Oliveira, owner of Agro Maripá, in Jaguariúna (SP). The 12

ride will be eternalized in a Golden Book, which will be donated to the National Museum of the Mangalarga Marchador, in CruzĂ­lia (MG), which will include all the horses and riders involved and of all who made this feat possible.

The big party Marcelo Baptista, Agro MaripĂĄ, and Daniel Borja, president of ABCCMM, celebrated the good result of the event. The Caxambu event really showed the great strength of the Mangalarga Marchador. The city park was completely taken from the first hours of the sunny morning of the 7th, with riders and trainers coming from various parts of Brazil. All participating animals had to be duly registered in the association's stud book and underwent prior evaluation. Guinness Book judges had also established a set of rules for validating the record, requiring that the sets ride a minimum of 3km, distributed in two sets with a maximum distance of approximately two bodies between them. Also prohibited were spur and whip, among other considerations for animal welfare.

The weather was festive in the exhibition park of Caxambu and until the end of the day there was still the expectation of confirmation of the official figures required by the representatives of the Guinness, at the closing ceremony. According to data released by ABCCMM, the event had representatives from 17 states, with children, men, women of all ages.

For the president of ABCCMM, Daniel Borja, the event was opportune to show the Mangalarga Marchador in leisure, friendship, relaxation and the power it has to unite people. In a note also posted on social networks, Daniel confirmed the results and highlighted the great historical fact obtained by the breed. "We did not get the Guinness seal, but the event was a great success. Guinness goal of 1600, there were only 32 missing, "he said." I am very proud to have been part of this project, which proved once again our motto: Here is Passion. "

FEATURES SPOTLIGHT ON “EVENTS- by Adrienne C. Scheck, PhD, AZ.

The Mane Event in Scottsdale or… Showcasing the Mangalarga Marchador On March 30 through April 1, the second annual Mane Event Horse Expo was held in Scottsdale Arizona (www.scottsdale.maneeventexpo.com). The event includes education on cutting edge training methods and equine health from some of the best and most knowledgeable horse trainers and educators from North America and beyond. The Expo provided an opportunity to demonstrate the versatility and beauty of the Mangalarga Marchador, and to introduce the breed to many horse enthusiasts who were unfamiliar with it. The USMMA took advantage of this opportunity, and had a booth representing members, breeders and owners from all over the United States, Canada and Brazil. We did demonstrations, Meet the Marchador sessions and provided horses for a number of the clinicians presenting at this event. The result was expanded knowledge about our breed and interest from individuals looking for their next horse.

Here is what took place…..

The USMMA funded rental of the booth, and local members Adrienne C. Scheck, DJ Sims, Randy Conilogue, Lynn Kelley and Jeff Bosley organized the booth, presentations and volunteers. People bringing horses rented their own stalls for the weekend.

All USMMA members were invited to provide literature for display and all breeders were listed on a breeder list provided to visitors. Members wishing to display a large banner at the booth paid $50 to the USMMA. Many members responded to our email request and sent high-quality pictures of their Marchador horses, and these were made into our wonderful video presentation by Randy Conilogue. The pictures and videos showed the beauty and versatility of our horses, and it ran continuously on a large screen TV at the booth. Sandy Dory provided Easter decorations and candy to add a festive look to the booth.

There were also short breed demonstrations, and we were one of 3 breeds to take advantage of the spotlight.

While the demo times allotted were short, we had 2 MM demos on Friday and Saturday. DJ Sims choreographed a 5 horse demonstration to highlight the versatility of the Mangalarga Marchador, and local horses got together to practice on weekends prior to the event. DJ brought Seamus da Boa Fe (owned by Summerwind Marchadors) and Laura Patterson Rosa came from Florida to ride him as a mounted archer. Sandy Dory brought her 2 Marchadors – Yansa InMotion and Nashville (Igor do Lucero), and she highlighted the use of Marchadors in endurance rides with Yansa. Grady Willard brought his mare Gabriela do Premier to show Western sports such as cowboy and Western dressage. Caboclo da Piedade (owned by Summerwind Marchadors) was used to demonstrate the calm and steady temperament of the breed with young students from Silver Stables riding bareback, standing up, jumping off and generally having a good time. Gaia do Summerwind (owned by Adrienne C. Scheck) was ridden by DJ Sims to represent three-day eventing and demonstrate jumping.

In a separate demo feature, Alessandra Deerinck rode and showed Lendario das Aguas JM, a stallion owned by Rick Schatsz, Flying Oaks Farms, who trailered in from Oklahoma just for this event. Lendario showed himself and the gait in patterns around the arena set to music.

Karen Livesay introduced each horse and rider and described the history and versatility of the breed while Brazilian music played in the background.

When the Marchadors weren’t in demonstrations, all of these horses, along with 3-year-old Eduardo do MManor (owned by Dinusha Perera and daughter Reyana) were in the barn for people to come and meet them and have their picture taken with them. We also had the opportunity to bring some of our horses into a breed pen near our booth for “Meet the Marchador”.

These 30 minute sessions allowed us to show their gait and chat with people about what we love about the MM breed. Gaia do Summerwind and Gabriela do Premier were presented on Friday; Lendario das Aguas JM on Saturday and Yansa InMotion and Nashville on Sunday were the representatives in the breed pen. Lynn Kelley also gave an individual talk about Brazil and the MM breed, talking about what makes the Marchador unique.

Perhaps the best and most unexpected exposure was when we were asked to provide horses for a number of the clinician demonstrations. Jim Masterson and Coralie Hughes used our horses for most of their demonstrations of The Masterson Method®, an integrated, multi-modality method of equine massage. They allowed us to introduce the horses and the breed, and they will be putting pictures from the event on their website.

Other clinicians also used our horses, and many people asked about them and learned of the breed while we stood with our horses waiting for the clinics to start.

One of the greatest things about doing a show like this is the opportunity to meet other USMMA members, to work together and chat about our horses! We were so fortunate in this regard!

Here is how you can do it….

One of the goals of the USMMA is to showcase our breed to people across the country. This requires volunteers to set up booths and demonstrations at other horse shows or events. To facilitate this, the USMMA has purchased and assembled a “show kit” that includes a lot of what you might want to present yourself and the MM breed in an attractive and professional manner. If you want to try it, it might be easier than you think!

We used a TV and folding tables loaned by members for the set up. Disposable plastic table cloths for the folding tables were purchased inexpensively, and colored scarves owned by members were added for “splash�. We also have a list of things that were used to help with organization of the booth and barn such as extension cords etc.

You will need to pay the shipping there and back to the USMMA. FEATURES SPOTLIGHT ON “EVENTS by Lynn Kelley, Summerwind Marchadors, AZ. Want to keep learning? This is one great way to do it - have the clinic come to you!

Another great way to host a Marchador event is to host a clinic.

Hosting a clinic is easier than you may think and here is what I learned about being a host! I plan to do many many more now.

Start small!

As the clinic host, here are some of the things you will need to do: THE CLINICIAN AND TOPIC -

Since you are doing this for your benefit too, pick a clinician and topic that you want. For my very first clinic in 2014, Laura Patterson, a vet and trainer from Brazil and Ann Staiger, a gait geneticist from Cornell, came to my ranch to teach about Marchadors and the Marcha gait.

THE FACILITY -

It does not need to be fancy, but it does need to be safe and large enough for the size of the clinic. Sometimes just a round pen and practice arena or field will do for ground work clinics, for example. If the group anticipated is larger, then you should consider a covered arena in case of bad weather and having access to a sound system so everyone can hear.

Think about parking and trailers if you are doing this at your home so that people have easy access to get in and out and not be in the way.

We hosted our first clinic at our Colorado ranch in a small arena, but we’ve also had some in Arizona since then too, in bigger arenas. Both locations worked out fine! In Colorado, we planned for extra space if we needed it by riding on the dirt road near the arena and in an outdoor field. We also mapped a trail 20

to ride for enjoyment. In Colorado, we have no access to an indoor arena and lucky for us, the weather was perfect!

THE PARTICIPANTS

You can invite your friends or people you ride with. If it is breed-specific, you can invite other owners of the same horses in your area. The clinician you hire can also advertise and promote the clinic. If you keep the clinic small enough for participants, everyone gets individual attention and the learning increases exponentially!

Always invite and publicize for more people, perhaps who don’t yet even own a horse to come to audit the clinic. It’s a great way to get more money to cover the costs and to garner interest for future clinics.

PAPERWORK AND MONEY

You will need to provide people with liability release forms sometimes up to 3 forms - for you, for the facility and for the clinician sometimes. If people are boarding at the facility overnight, there are usually forms to fill out for that as well. If you can send these forms out beforehand, it saves lots of time on the morning of the clinic.

Collecting the fees beforehand is also helpful. The clinic fee is just a division - all of your costs divided by how many people you want to attend. The costs usually include: the clinician’s fee, the clinician’s room (some of them come in their own trailer), the facility fees, insurance (sometimes the clinician or the facility covers that) and any other activity fees, like meals, a dance or music at night etc. Any auditors can add dollars to a contingency fund or profit.

Use that opportunity with the return of the money and the forms to ask about what the participants have any specific problems or questions.

We also add a few demonstrations, lectures and videos as a way to provide another kind of break, for both the horses and riders.

THE SCHEDULE

Ask the clinician for help in this area, but for me, it’s supposed to be learning and FUN. So, I can’t go a whole day and stay 21

functional. Having some extra room in the schedule also allows for contingencies or some flexibility if you want to add a topic at the spur of the moment. Based on the skills of the participants, the pace of the day may be faster or slower than you had thought.

I generally plan on the whole morning 9-1 with a mid-morning break. Then the afternoon is easier, only 2 hours.

Have lunch arranged - either at the facility or planned nearby as a group. Having people find lunch on their own usually means some loss of time.

GETTING READY

Do a walk-through the day before. Get the horses washed and groomed. Buy the snacks and water to have on-hand. If there is a set-up involved with jumps or obstacles, set that up the day before too.

THE BENEFITS


 We have had an excellent, excellent clinics. Great teachers!

We learned a lot. We made new friends. We got some good photos and videos and our horses enjoyed the days as well.

One of the things we hope to do with this publication is to feature the diversification of how the Marchador is used with real life examples. This Spring we are featuring MM Events with help on how we might help you do more locally with your Marchadors.
