Despite the cold, windy and wet spring start for our opening April 12 cruise, we had a respectable 400 cars and a number of hardy motorcyclists show up before showers started to scatter many around 5:30 PM. The good news is that it was more tolerable for our April 26 cruise and it will only get better as warmer temperatures arrive in May. We had a great turnout for our monthly Tuesday general meeting tour of the new state of the art Herb Chambers Collision Center in Holliston. We enjoyed an informative evening of what it takes to repair these new generation automobiles with material substrate combinations unheard of 25 years ago and restrictive environmental and safety regulations imposed by the state and federal oversight agencies. We want to thank our host Paul Borque for the informative and amazing operation that Herb Chambers has built.

And, as the warmer weather comes we can plan to cruise as a club to other area cruise nights and also enjoy some ice cream runs when the weather warms up. What is our backup plan if it is raining? We’ve got the Bass Pro Shops Conservation Room reserved and will be able to use that opportunity to update everyone on upcoming events and plan for other activities. This will also allow our newest members to get know and interact with everyone, including a few of the club dinosaurs like myself. I’d like to also use those rain dates as an opportunity to have members discuss their latest projects with the hope that it can be a useful forum for helping one another when another pair of hands, eyes or ideas might be needed.

A good example of a show and tell project that everyone would enjoy seeing how it was put together is Zeke Sawayer’s winter effort to design and build, with Mike Rabbitt’s help, the awesome FINISH LINE trap light system for the valve cover racing track they debuted at the April 26 Cruise. This original valve track project was started

by Mike Rabbitt and his creative crew of club volunteers after having borrowed a track from the Chevy/GMC truck club. The track has been a hit that kids and parents alike enjoy at our cruise and car show events. Each winter, there is a new improvement added. The winter of 2016/17 saw the Christmas Tree start light added and this past 2017/2018 winter the imaginative and creative FINISH LINE with flashing LED lighting and automated FINISH CHECKERED FLAG left no doubt which valve cover finished first.

For the upcoming May 15 Monthly Meeting I plan on doing an ice cream cruise over the Norfolk, Wrentham back roads to Cumberland, RI the Ice Cream Machine across from Diamond Hill Park at 4288 Diamond Hill Rd. (Rte. 114) in Cumberland.

APRIL 12 CRUISE WINNER

Richard Dermarderosian was convinced by club member and fellow Westwood resident Lou Valentine that he should bring his 1937 LaSalle Convertible Coupe to our April 12 opening Bass Pro Shops cruise at Patriot Place in Foxborough despite the prospect that the weather was unseasonably cool and the late threat of showers and rain.

Lou also noted that he probably won’t regret it.

This may sound like the fix was in for the cruiser of the night award, but on any given Thursday cruise night, Richard’s gorgeous LaSalle would be a stand out selection as it was on April 12.

For those, not familiar with the LaSalle marque, this was one of Alfred Sloan’s companion marque strategy brands that began in 1927 for General Motors with the LaSalle being a lower priced luxury companion for Cadillac. Other GM companion marques back in the day included Oakland’s Pontiac, Oldsmobile’s Viking and Buick’s Marquette. During the depression years of the mid1930’s competition came with Chrysler’s Airstream and Packard’s lower priced One-Twenty in 1935 which took off with 24,195 sold and Ford’s Lincoln-Zephyr in 1936 which sold 15,000 eroding the LaSalle’s market potential with only 8,651 sold in 1935 and 13,004 sold in 1936. The Chrysler Airstream and companion Airflow model that was introduced in 1934 did not survive this market strategy and ended production of both in 1937.

Richard’s LaSalle Convertible was one of 970 built from a total production of 32,000 for 1937 making it a rare model.

He purchased the car from its Arizona owner over the Labor Day weekend last year, but the car’s roots go back to a Cape Cod restoration shop 30 years earlier where it was restored. Several of the changes made by GM to improve

LaSalle sales in 1937 included giving it the 322 cu. in. (5.3L) monobloc flathead V8 of the series 60 Cadillac, new styling, a lower price range and marketing the car was completely Cadillac built. Herb Chambers Collision Center Tour

We recently toured the new Herb Chambers Collision Center in Holliston, MA. Our host, body shop manager Paul Bourque led us through the impressive 53,000 square foot facility. The facility boasts an impressive array of state-of-the art equipment:

       

Four spray booths Three prep stations Front end alignment machine with a zero-degree approach angle which accommodates the lowclearance, high-performance and super cars that Chambers sells and services Tire mounting machine that never touches the rim while mounting the tire Road force wheel balancer that simulates the weight of a car A shop vacuum system that supports dustless sanding at every work station Two Car Aligner frame machines Two Cellette dedicated bench fixtures for use in the replacement or major bulkhead/unibody components. They are similar to those used in the manufacturing process and simulate factory assembly.

This state of the art facility, one of their three collision centers in Massachusetts, serves 16 Chambers dealerships, as well as external clientele.

The shop processes 55 to 65 vehicles per week and is designed for optimum work flow and elimination of the bottlenecks that typically occur in a large facility. The design of the facility provides a safe and healthy environment for their employees, and their products and systems – waterborne paint, a waste water recirculating system -are environmentally responsible.

The facility customer waiting area has the feel of a posh hotel lobby, and customers are able to view their vehicles being worked on through glass walls. Yep, you can bring in your damaged daily driver to have one of their on-site insurance appraisers work on a claim, then expect it to get the same treatment as the Lamborghini in the next work bay.

I am a retired business consultant and certified trainer in the auto body/automotive field, am certified in multiple paint lines, and have worked with both the EPA and OSHA in pre- and post-compliance walkthroughs.

I have provided expertise to automotive facilities throughout the greater New England area, and I can say without reservation that Herb Chambers has set a very high bar in the collision repair industry.

Fitchburg Flea Market

Following the early March MARCOM Flea Market is the 48th Annual Early Ford V8 Club’s Annual Spring Tune-Up cruise and Flea Market at the Fitchburg Airport. This year there was no pressure for club members to get there early and pass out car show flyers so it was a great opportunity to use at as a tune up cruise for our cruise vehicles. As always, everything transportation related here.

This barn find 1935 Terraplane started right up and ran like a top. PRICE? $6,500 o.b.o.

The Spindles Car Club has been around since 1957 and are based out of a 28 car garage in Weymouth. They hold an open house each July at the club’s garage and a premier car show at the Marshfield Fairgrounds on the Labor Day weekend in September. The news for 2018 was an announcement they were conducting a first time indoor weekend Cruisin The Mall Car Show at the Hanover Mall as well as being the host car club for the Mall’s “FOOD TRUCK TUESDAYS! Events that began April 3 and will run through too October 30.

The indoor Mall Cruise-In, was set up Thursday evening April 19 and ran through the weekend culminating in an indoor-outdoor cruise event on Sunday. Fortunately they experienced pretty good weather during the show and it was great to see the 80 cars lined up inside the wide mall walkways and in the now vacant J.C. Penny anchor store.

The variety of vehicles displayed inside ranged from a Model T to the Boston Monkey “Irate Primate” Funny Car and just about everything in between. Could this be a trend where indoor malls have been experiencing strong competition from a resurgence of outdoor strip malls that will welcome the cruising and collector car show community to increase foot traffic? I certainly hope so. It is a far cry from the days of yore when I remember store owners calling the cops to keep these hot rodders from parking their rides and driving away their customers.
