USF’s M.Ed. in Teaching is designed for individuals who currently hold a non-teaching baccalaureate degree and wish to obtain secondary teacher certification in their major content area. In addition to gaining teacher certification, they earn a master’s degree in education. All of this is possible in an online and evening format, culminating in a professional semester of full-time student teaching.

There is no “typical” student enrolled in this unique teacher certification program. Classes are diverse, with people of all ages, backgrounds and professions in attendance. From art to biology, from music to mathematics—we’ve seen it all. You’ll enjoy hands-on learning experiences and discover the value of serving others in classrooms and beyond. The lessons you learn will take you farther than you ever imagined.

• Baccalaureate degree in an academic major that is taught at the secondary level or in a related area • Minimum 2.6 GPA or appropriate disposition and demonstrated knowledge and skill in a related field for provisional entrance; 3.0 GPA for unconditional entrance

• Three completed recommendation forms that address the applicant’s potential disposition as an educator •

Completion of the Praxis II exam in the applicant’s undergraduate major content area, taken within the first nine semester hours of graduate coursework

We save the best for last.

The final semester of your teaching certification is known as the professional semester. It includes research, secondary and content methods, instructional management and full-time student teaching. Although the program can be completed in two years, you may elect to take coursework at a slower pace. Classes are offered only during specific semesters, so it’s advisable to develop a plan of study early in the program. Passing Praxis II scores are required in both content and pedagogy in order to become certified.
