USF College Monthly and College Weekly are no more; both have been re branded under The Vessel. In order to bring USF students, faculty, staff, and community members up-to-date campus news, our staff is also in the process of designing a new website. Please be patient as we transition. The new website will be up and running by the end of September.

Letter From The Editor

Change:Embrace It I am currently in my second to last semester here at the University of Sioux Falls and it is a little weird, to say the least, to start pondering “life after college.” In all honesty, it is a little scary. Even though I have held a job while enrolled here, I am not entirely sure I am ready to face the so called “adult world.” Sure, I pay bills and have responsibilities, but outside of college, the world feels much bigger.

Yuharelly is majoring in Multi-Media Production and Graphic Design.

This Summer she traveled to Los Angeles, CA and worked as an extra for TV and movies. She also had a job working at a boba tea shop.

In my almost four years here, I have learned it is better to embrace the new, rather than to fear it. Change is scary, but it does not have to be bad; do not let that fear hold you back.

Although I cannot tell you my plans after I walk across the stage next May, I can tell you that I am pretty proud of what I’ve accomplished here at USF thus far. One of my biggest undertakings has been the rebranding of this magazine.

When reaching to pick up this copy of the student magazine, you should have noticed one major change. I would like to introduce to you: The Vessel. The student news magazine College Monthly is no more.

Whitney is a Political Science and Journalism double major. This summer she worked on rebranding The Vessel magazine and website.

Besides the name change, The Vessel will be very similar to what you have seen prior. This issue is the first of many, so there is a learning curve. Please be patient with us as we transition this magazine into something amazing.

Look for The Vessel the first Thursday of every month, and during the rest of the month you can stay up-to-date by following us on twitter - @USF_Vessel - and by liking The USF Vessel on Facebook.

You can also follow us on Instagram at USFVessel. Stay tuned for our new website, which will be updated by the end of the month!

The magazine is always looking for fresh ideas and new perspectives; if you have an idea you wish to share, email us at vessel.usiouxfalls@ gmail.com. We are also taking submissions for creative works, including poems, short stories, photography, and art.

Do not hesitate to try a hobby, participate in an activity, or make a new friend. College is one of the best times to discover a hidden talent and to learn new things about yourself. Life does not wait; get out there and live it.

• The inauguration of USF’s 23rd President, Brett Bradfield, will be held on September 7th in the Meredith Auditorium at 10 AM. Congratulations to our new president!

• Java City transitioned to Cooper’s Cafe and is now featuring Starbucks coffee products.

• The new residence hall was completed. The hall is intergenerational, as it houses students of all classifications. It is also one of the only dorms in the nation to be connected to the University’s library.

The new residence hall has a fitness room, exterior patio, and a theatre with a big screen.

Cooper’s Cafe had its grand opening on August 26th during the new student orientation.

• The computers in the student center lab were replaced, as well as others in various places around campus.

• The upper Grand Island parking lot was repaired and resurfaced.

• Three new Residence Directors were added to the staff: Scott Greenman for Sullivan Hall, Chase Ward for Kroske/Collier Baker Hall (both USF alumni) and Calvin Athy for the new residence hall (from Michigan).

• There are five new full-time faculty members at USF this year: Timothee Bryan (mathematics), Andrew Beck (psychology), Brooke Murphy (education), Nick Poppens (media studies), and Briana Powell (nursing).

• The USF management team has been updated to include Dr. Jason Douma, Dr. Joy Lind,

Peanut Butter Banana Oatmeal Mug

Ingredients •

1 banana (sliced)

James, an awkward freshman at the University of Sioux Falls has just met the love of his life, Clara. Possibly. She may also be just another name in a long list of rejections. But now, armed with his new friends, textbooks, and a mascot costume, James is off to battle his way though academics, post puberty emotions and bad cafeteria food to ace the test, snag the degree, and hopefully, get the girl.

What has President Trump Accomplished So Far?

Military

Healthcare

Individuals who identify as transgender are barred from joining the military. The administration has not taken steps to remove transgender individuals who are currently serving. However, Trump is being sued by five active-duty service members over his intentions to ban transgender personnel from serving in the military.

The project was halted under Obama, but revived by Trump and began operations in June.

US economy added 209,000 jobs in July (Bureau of Labor Statistics) and the jobless rate neared 4.3%, the lowest since 2001.

The Affordable Care Act helped insure more than 20 million Americans, but has also resulted in rising premiums. Trump ran his campaign on the promise, to “immediately repeal and replace” the ACA. House Republican attempted to pass a replacement bill, however, it failed to pass the Senate. Those who opposed the bill feared it would leave too many Americans uninsured.

Nationally

Immigration

The stock market has hit record highs, oil prices remain fairly low, and inflation is under control. However, car and retail sales are falling, while wage growth remains stagnant.

Trump signed two executive memos instructing immigration officers to take a tougher approach when enforcing current measures. Illegal border crossings from Mexico into the U.S. dropped 40% as of February (Department of Homeland Security).

Diplomacy Strengthened relationships with China, Japan, Russia, and the UK. Trump helped free humanitarian workers in Egypt.

Trump has attempted to get “tougher” with North Korea after recent missile testing; N.K. has launched 12 missiles of various capacities since February 2017.

Guam has been marked as a potential demonstration target. U.S. air and naval forces that are based in Guam are on high alert.
