On top of his career as a software engineer, he takes great interest in arts and music. Indranil loved to draw and paint in his childhood and he later fell in love with the technique of water color. In spite of his busy schedule, he has recently found that painting acts as a form of meditation, which helps him pass through difficult times. Indranil finds his inspiration in the religious and

unknown stories from his culture. He has showcased his pieces in Jupiter, FL, Miami, FL, Fort Lauderdale, FL, and Maynard, MA.

Probaho - Soikot’s Annual Magazine I have seen advertisements of the fastest land animal on earth turning into a car, and after watching that I wanted to see a cheetah in action with my own eyes. My dream came true when my dad told me we were going to Africa during the summer. I couldn’t believe I would be able to see the agility of a cheetah from the roof of a Land Rover.

My parents and I went to a variety of parks during our trip to Kenya and Tanzania, and one of my favorite was “Masai Mara”. I enjoyed this park the most because I was able to watch my dream while I was awake. We went to Masai Mara during this time of year to see the Great Migration of wildebeests crossing the Mara River. Masai Mara is filled with surprises and when we went to the Mara River; we experienced one first hand.

While we patiently waited for the wildebeests to cross the r i v e r, o u r g u i d e , Joseph, informed us there was a cheetah nearby.

He received this information through the radio system connected with every safari vehicle. Our van was having pop-up roof so that we can see and take pictures whenever we see any animal around. As we rushed towards the hotspot, we got our cameras ready with immense anticipation.

The location of the cheetah was very close by and as when reached we saw many cars surrounding a

cheetah and a group of gazelles not so far away. We spotted the cheetah focusing on the

Probaho - Soikot’s Annual Magazine gazelles very carefully. The grass was tall and the cheetah’s color helped it stay camouflaged so none of the gazelles knew there was a cheetah ready to attack them.

I watched how the cheetah walked up and slowly took a few steps closer to its prey. It stopped and sat down again. It eyed a few cars and then got up again. Cautious and alert, it carefully continued to move closer towards the herd of gazelles. This continued for almost 20 minutes.

“My fingers clicked away to catch this rare moment in As the news spread, more cars started gathering. I could not my camera.” believe we were watching this astounding event right in front of our

eyes, completely in the wild. No human was forcefully making the cheetah hunt. As we watched I thought about how lucky I am to experience this rare event.

I am thankful my parents brought me here to enjoy the last two weeks of summer. The cheetah closed in with the gazelles and suddenly it jolted into a sprint. Our car turned on and followed the cheetah. My fingers clicked away to catch this rare moment in my camera.

We were all so anxious to see if the cheetah was successful in catching a gazelle. Sadly, there were so many cars I could only catch a glimpse of what was happening. I saw the cheetah jump on top of a gazelle but then I saw nothing else.

As a car moved away we were able to close in and saw no sight of the cheetah but a gazelle lying on the ground. We were sure it was dead but we saw no blood marks. The gazelle was breathing heavily. It was a full size adult gazelle. What seemed rather small from a distance actually looked pretty large when we saw it from close range. Where had the cheetah gone? The cheetah ran away because it was scared of all the cars! Maybe it

Probaho - Soikot’s Annual Magazine will come back to claim its catch, I thought. This thought soon left my mind because after a few minutes, we saw the gazelle spring up and run away. As if it was saying, “Yipee, I’m alive!”

Everything happened so quickly! The attack was only a few minutes long, but it was astonishing. At the end of this whole thing, I felt bad for the cheetah, but also felt good for the gazelle. We, humans, interrupted and scared the cheetah away from his game. It’s harder than you think for a skillful animal to get food in the wild even with its incredible speed-vantage.

On our last day at the park, we finally got to see a successful kill. A different group of cheetahs caught their prey, another gazelle. It’s just how the animal kingdom works.

PREVENT CANCER BY NATURAL SUPERFOODS

Mishuk Kahali This summer I had gone to India and learned that my grandma is a cancer survivor. My mom is always talking about her but yet I never knew that! I am also very surprised that she hasn’t had to go through any chemotherapy. She is using homeopathic natural medicines. She also eats fruits, herbs and vegetable superfoods and believes those are helpful for her. By eating these cancer-preventing superfoods, can everyone prevent cancer? This question made me curious to search some articles in which people described natural food, some of which people used to make medicines in India during the ancient times. Discussed below is the list of foods which I found could be worthy of mention in this article.

Blueberries- Blueberries, as many people already know has lots of antioxidants.

Antioxidants are what neutralize free radicals, which are unstable compounds that can damage cells and lead to diseases including cancer. So free radicals are the bad guys and antioxidants are the good ones.

Apples (especially seeds)- The natural fiber of apple releases chemicals which helps to fight the formation of cancer cells. Also, apples have an antioxidant called procyanidins which trigger a series of cell signals which result in cancer cell death.

Cherimoya-This fruit tastes in between banana and pineapple and available in many U.S. markets. Cherimoya will give you plenty of fiber, vitamin C, vitamin B6, riboflavin and potassium to fight cancer.

Kiwi (cutting it in half and spooning out the flesh is the best way to get the good stuff!)Kiwi includes many cancer-fighting antioxidants including vitamin A, vitamin E, lutein and copper.

Avocado- Healthy monounsaturated fats are in avocados and its oil helps you to absorb anti-cancer antioxidants like lycopene and beta-carotene.

Lemonade or other citrus fruits- Citrus fruits and lemonade ate every day can cut down the risk of mouth, throat and stomach cancer in half as argued by an Australian research program.

Garlic- Adding garlic to the food you eat helps prevent cancer because it contains sulfur compounds that may encourage the immune system’s natural defenses against cancer, and may have the potential to reduce tumor growth. Studies suggest that garlic can reduce the chance of stomach cancer by as much as a factor of 12 (wow!)

Turmeric- Turmeric contains curcumin which can also be used to treat cancer patients!

Many laboratory studies have shown that the curcumin in the turmeric has anticancer effects on the cancer cells there are in the body.

Ginger- Many studies have pointed the finger to ginger as one of the best cancer preventing foods, for example, ginger roots are used to reduce inflammation in the colon and also in laboratory … if all of us make a habit eating some animals. These tumors grow much more slowly if they are treated of these superfoods with beta-ionone, which is a compound that is found in ginger.

Broccoli- Broccoli is cancer preventing vegetable but isn’t the best when microwaved. In fact, microwaving broccoli destroys 97 percent of the vegetable’s cancer preventive flavonoids, so its best steamed, tossed in a salad or eaten raw as a snack.

Studies also showed that consuming Brussels sprouts specifically can reduce the risk of colon cancer.

All we know that how chemotherapy or radiation has very adverse side affects which ruin the quality of life! So, if all of us make a habit eating some of these superfoods daily and exercise, we can prevent this deadly disease! These superfoods could even be all used as a treatment or maybe even used as a medicine to treat cancer! This could be the best way to say “NO” to cancer (before we can find the cancer cure). So, the take home message of my article is better prevention than cure by eating natural superfoods.

Renessa Ghosh This spring I went to Paris with my mom and dad. After landing, we headed outside to get a taxi. Once we got outside we all were astounded by the greenery. There was grass, trees, and even flowers everywhere we looked. Once we got deeper into the famous city of Paris, I noticed that it looked a lot like Kolkata. There were tall buildings, crowded streets and sidewalks and apartment buildings that looked worn and old.

There were too many people to count on the streets, some in groups or by themselves, walking, all with different destinations: home, a café, or the grocery store. Once we got to our hotel we checked in, ate a quick dinner in our room of fish and chips with some rice, and went to bed.

The next morning we had to wake up pretty early, at around 7 a.m. We had a tour that day to see the whole city of Paris. We were to leave the hotel at around 8:15 with our tour guide so we could have time to pick up two more families from two different hotels. After picking them up we started our tour.

First we saw some historical sites such as Notre Dame (pronounced Noto Dam) the gothic style church which still has masses and Arc de Triumph which is a monument to honor soldiers who fell in war and has a fire burning all day every day in the middle. After that we had a river cruise on the Seine River. We also ate there and saw different monuments. We saw things like the Island of Cygnus where a smaller version of the Statue of Liberty is placed and the outside of the Louvre Museum. We ate a three course meal during the cruise and enjoyed it very much. We had an appetizer, main course and a choice between cheese and dessert, since the French people have three course meals for lunch and dinner. After that we all went to the Eiffel Tower. We were going to the second floor

Since it was a chilly day on the ground it was blistering cold even if it was only the second floor (I recommend going to the Eiffel Tower on a warm day if you are a person who gets cold very quickly). We went back down and went back to the minivan.

We finished the trip there and went back to the hotel for our favorite dinner of fish and chips with rice again before going to bed.

The next day we were able to wake up late because our only activity that day was to tour the Louvre and we weren't going to leave the hotel until around one o'clock. We ate pretty quickly and then we went up to out room to relax until our tour. At exactly one we left the hotel and got into a taxi to get to the meeting place since we were going to walk to the Louvre from the meeting place across the street.

When we got to the meeting place, the tour guide was almost about to leave. We walked to the Louvre and when we got there we got some audio guides that the tour guide was going to talk through so we could hear him better.

Some of the paintings we saw that you may know: The Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, An unfinished painting by Leonardo Da Vinci (St. John the Baptist), The Virgin and Child with Mary, and the Coronation of Napoleon. The person in St John the Baptist is thought to be Da Vinci himself. There are also sculptures in the Louvre such as Venus de Milo and The Seated Scribe. Since the Louvre was once a fortress there is a section of the Louvre that has the original stone walls of the Louvre Fortress. In the lobby of the Louvre there is a upside down pyramid which is called The Inverted Glass Pyramid. There are also a few rooms that have paintings on the ceilings as well as artifacts like jewelry, furniture and even silverware and a few goblets.

Something you may not know is that the Louvre has so many items that it would take a whole entire year to view every single item individually and that too if you worked all day and every day. After seeing everything that the tour guide showed us we went outside and caught a taxi back to the hotel. Since it was only three o'clock and we had already eaten lunch we spent the rest of the day in our room and for dinner we ate fish and chips with rice (again) and settled down for a good nights sleep.

The next day we had to wake up at around five o'clock since we were going to see the chateaus in Loire Valley in Southern France. Since we had to leave the hotel at six thirty we had to pick up breakfast from the lobby instead of sitting down and eating. After that we

Probaho - Soikotâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Annual Magazine met our tour guide in the lobby. Again we had to pick up two more families so we had to set out a bit early as well as Loire Valley being about two hours away. In Southern France, there are fields of rapeseed which is used to make Canola Oil and lavender. We liked all three chateaus but all of them were decorated the same way though. In the second one there was a kitchen with a pizza oven and scale for measuring. It also had a huge garden and forest as well. The last one we saw after lunch and it was the biggest one out of the three. It looked like and maybe even better than Cinderella's Castle at Disney and was even bigger. We went back to the hotel when the sun was just beginning to set but us being tired we ate some fish and chips and rice and went to bed.

The next day we took more of a rest day. We were to eat dinner on top of the Eiffel Tower then go see Moulin Rouge. We didn't have to leave the hotel until seven thirty so we we had the whole day to ourselves. Since we were free the whole morning and afternoon we decided to go shopping (considering Paris is considered to be the fashion capital of the world). After having lunch at one we decided to take a quick nap, since we were going to be up probably until twelve.

We woke up around six thirty to get ready. After we were ready we went downstairs to hail a taxi since the schedule at Seasons fifty eight is very strict and if you are too slow to eat they will tell you to hurry up and eat. For dinner we had a three course meal. We enjoyed dinner very much. When we were done we went down to the ground floor and got to a taxi to take us to Moulin Rouge. When we got there we were a bit early so we took a few pictures at the entrance. When they let us be seated we were asked if we wanted any drinks. Now the age requirement was six and above but for me I think it should have been 18+ (that is just what I think). When we got back to our hotel we immediately went to sleep (since we were very tired) .

On our last day in Paris we went to the Palace of Versailles which is the place where the Treaty of Versailles was signed. The Treaty of Versailles is the treaty that ended World War I. We woke up pretty

Since the bus was going to pick us up at the same meeting spot as the Louvre, we picked up lunch before getting on the bus.When we got there we started touring the palace. The interior of the palace was exactly like the other castles we had seen and most of the rooms were recreated including the hall of mirrors where the Treaty of Versailles was signed.When we had finished touring we went back to the bus to get back to the hotel. We were dropped of at the meeting spot and we caught a taxi to go back to our hotel. We relaxed all evening and ate dinner comprising the same thing we had the other few nights and went to bed (considering we had a flight next morning back home).

When we left Paris I hoped I could return there someday again and I hope you go there one day too. I LOVE PARIS.

Ronaldo commonly known as Cr7, was born on Feb 5 1985 he was named after Ronald Reagan – his fathers favorite actor. Ronaldo as far as learning he was not that good. Ronaldo decided to commit himself to soccer only he went to a small club He has 502 goals for that Andorinha where his father was the kit man. His coach said that he had AMAZING skills and shooting his club Real Madrid technique. His teammates would call him the little bee and 78 goals for his because nobody could e v e r c a t c h u p w i t h country Portugal and Ronaldo.Then one day had 118 goals for he went to Sporting Manchester United.

He scored amazing goals that you cannot even imagine he made skills in Real Madrid called Hallo, freestyle, and the Ronaldo turn and chop and much much more.

Ronaldo is the only player in the Spanish league to score at least 1 goal in each game - he is just perfect .

Ronaldo is an amazing player ,the best of all time and is a very good idol for kids , even many adults.

He has reached amazing landmarks and has trophies and created moves and scored goals that will take our breath away . So let’s all wish Cristiano an amazing fifth ballon d’or and a happy upcoming season.

MY ALASKA TRIP

Rapti Datta I want to tell you about something very cool we saw on our summer cruise! On the day we stopped at Juneau, we went on a whale-watching tour in the morning, where we saw humpback whales, orcas, and plenty of islands with an abundance of wildlife.

In the afternoon, we went to Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center, which is in the Tongass National Forest. Here, we walked to Nugget Falls (where I got my shoes wet!), watched a fifteen-minute film about the surrounding area, and went to Mendenhall Lake.

There were so many things to see at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center! There was a telescope in the main area which was pointed directly at the blue and white glacier. It was extremely interesting! We went on several trails throughout the park; one trail took us to a stream where, in the middle of summer, many salmon come swimming back and lay their eggs in the same stream they were born! (It’s called “spawning”.)

Whales eat huge amounts Whales eat of seafood such as krill huge amounts and sardines. Humpback whales use big filters, of seafood baleens, to take in large gulps of water. They keep their mouth such as krill called closed while the filter takes out the water, but keeps the fish inside. and sardines. Our tour guide talked to us about the tricks whales use to catch fish quickly. One of the main tricks was swimming quickly around a large school of fish, using their huge tails to create a vortex where the fish got trapped.

Humpback whale calves, when just born, are around twenty feet long and weigh nearly 4,000 pounds! The mom’s milk is 50% fat and its color is pink. Calves drink about 150 gallons of milk and can gain 100 pounds daily. They reach adulthood after fifteen years.

Probaho - Soikot’s Annual Magazine Humpback whales migrate in the winter to tropical, warmer waters near the Equator, where they have babies. During the summer and fall, however, the whales feed on thousands of pounds of krill and fish and gain many layers of fat for the winter. They spend their time in Alaska and Canada during the summer seasons. Some of their migration journeys and are about 3,000 miles long (from Alaska to Hawaii and other tropical waters!)

On our whale watching tour, we saw several humpback whales and their big tails splashing in the water. We also found something rare: orcas! Two orcas were swimming less than fifteen feet away from our tour boat. The weather was very sunny! We saw the humpback whales spraying water with their water spouts.

Their tails were a mixture of black and white.

SOIKOT COMMUNITY OUTREACH PROGRAM

Buddhadeb Basu & Jyotirmoy Sarkar Soikot (www.soikot.org) is charting an exciting new course. We are beginning to make our mark in the local community by implementing our inter-community outreach programs.

Soikot’s members are givers by nature and we are confident that by joining hands we will shape the future of our community by sharing our skills as well as resources with other communities.

Over the past two decades the Bengali community of Tampa Bay Area under the banner of Soikot has been coming together as a tighter knit community and now more than one hundred twenty families are part of this thriving community. We gather together frequently to celebrate our main religious festivals; organize cultural programs and yearly picnics in addition to the many friendly family gatherings. This is an excellent progress over a short period of time and we should all feel proud of what we have accomplished in such a short time.

Over the last several months a few of our association members have taken an initiative to expand our core association charter to get into community outreach programs. This is still in the early planning phase. We are working diligently towards developing a common purpose for our community to serve others both outside and We are working within our own community. To bring you up to speed, here’s a quick update on where we are now and our next steps: diligently towards In May of 2017, we started contacting a few of the established and highly regarded local charities and other organizations to understand their needs and ways for us to serve as a group. ●

By June, we identified and shortlisted 3 organizationsFeeding Tampa Bay, Metropolitan Ministries and Hillsborough Aging Services. Based on their needs and our ability, skills and interests, we felt we can volunteer as a group and serve some of these organizations’ needs.

This was fantastic news for all of us. What a better way to give back to the local community we all live in! So, our journey began with the first step. ●

For our first two volunteering projects, we came together as two small groups and

volunteered for Feeding Tampa Bay on July 8th and 15th. About thirty of us including over ten kids had a great time sorting foods and other necessaries for the less fortunate.

Collectively we served over one hundred hours and boxed over ten thousand meals. ● Continuing our momentum, one of our members went through the Hillsborough County background check and orientation program. Met and brainstormed several projects and ideas where Soikot members can pitch in. Two of our members are currently representing Soikot in volunteering for the County’s Senior Center in Lutz. A cultural program is currently in the planning phase for performing a concert for the seniors on Oct

We are confident that this will put a smile on our local senior’s faces. ● One of our members completed the orientation program for Metropolitan Ministries. Currently, we are in the process of clearing calendars of our community members for a group volunteering project. ● We are in the process of launching a Facebook page where we plan to post all the volunteering opportunities where our members can sign up to volunteer and also provide their input and ideas for new projects.

This FB page will also continue to track all our completed and ongoing projects.We look forward to your continued support for our volunteering programs. We are confident more and more members will extend their help to serve our community. Together we can build a better community.

P VS. NP: THE UNSOLVED PROBLEM

Arko Ghosh Computer Science is the study of computers and computational systems. One of the most important aspects of computer science is problem-solving, an essential skill for life. This science is geared towards design, development, and analysis of software and hardware and its applications to solving problems in a variety of business, scientific and social contexts. Because these technologies solve problems to serve the people and bring changes to our society, there is a significant human side to computer science as well.

The application of this science is infinite. From digital encryption to vehicle routing, the field of computer science forms the foundation for future innovation. However, not all problems have been solved with this science. This is because of P vs. NP: The Unsolved Problem signifying the complexity involved in the computation.

So, what is P vs. NP? P vs. NP is one the most well-known and unanswered questions in computer science. In layman terms, P vs. NP refers to the question whether every problem that can be verified by a computer in a reasonable time … if P=NP were to be can also be solved by a computer in a reasonable time. P (an example of a polynomial true, then the robotic represents Polynomial-time is y = 3.5x3). The P class of problems means that the hand would be answer to these problems (say, y) can be solved by an algorithm in a reasonable amount of time (say, 3.5x3, capable of doing where x is the number of variables influencing the anything and answer y). NP represents Non-Polynomial time (for everything an actual example, y = 3x; note that y increases exponentially with human arm can do. x). NP class of problems are those that can be checked reasonably fast if the answer is given but will take exponentially long to solve without an answer (e.g., Sudoku). A question that is frequently asked by computer scientists that ties to P vs. NP is: “Does being able to verify a problem quickly, given the answer, means that there is a way to solve the problem?”

One of the simplest ways to explain P≠NP versus P=NP would be using the example of a human-like robotic arm as a metaphor. For P≠NP, representing a class of problems that cannot be solved, to be true and, the solution to building a fully functional human-like robotic hand cannot be fully met in the case of our robotic arm metaphor. Arguably though, if P=NP were to be true, then the robotic hand would be capable of doing

Probaho - Soikot’s Annual Magazine anything and everything an actual human arm can do. If we could find the solution to show that P=NP, we could potentially cure diseases at its early onset and revolutionize the society.

P class of problems includes algorithms like multiplication, division, and sorting. NP class of problem includes algorithms like factoring, job scheduling, and vehicle routing. Over time, scientists had some luck of managing to make algorithms for some NP instances so that they would be P problems instead such as finding prime numbers.

“If P=NP, then the world would be a profoundly different place than we usually assume it to be. There would be no special value in ‘creative leaps,’ no fundamental gap between solving a problem and recognizing the solution once it’s found. Everyone who could appreciate a symphony would be Mozart. Everyone who could follow a step-by-step argument would be Gauss.” That’s how Scott Aaronson from MIT put it. P vs. NP would change our everyday lives.

Another classic NP problem is Traveling Salesman problem. A salesman has to travel to 5 cities starting from any city, traveling all 5 cities at least once and finally come back to the starting city with the condition that salesman has limited gas in his car and hence, thus he has to find the most efficient shortest path. It is easy to solve this problem with 5 cities by finding all the permutations but the time that will take to solve the problem for 1000 cities will exponentially grow. P=NP says, without searching one will already know which path to follow i.e. Suppose A-->C-->D-->B-->E-->A is the only shortest and efficient path, and the salesman will already know it, and there will be no need to try to determine other pathways; so much of time will be saved.

If P=NP is proven, the result would be extraordinary; it would lead to a huge increase in computational power, allowing us to solve an enormous array of practical problems from circuit design to industrial design applications; our computational reach in molecular research would reach … if someone proves its maximum potential. The P vs. NP question is important P=NP, we might in part because of these exciting possibilities.

If we want to search some resource and we already know where it is actually on the web, we would just type URL and check it. Proving P=NP would significantly change our lives. Nimisha Sarkar The term ‘Big Five’ was originally used by hunters to refer to five African animals that are considered most difficult and dangerous to hunt on foot. These wild animals are Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard, Lion and Rhinoceros. Buffalos, elephants and lions are found in

abundance but it’s hard to spot rhinos and leopards. Black rhinos remain critically endangered because of poaching for rising demand of their horns. Leopards are nocturnal and go under cover during daytime. We were fortunate enough to see all of them in Maasai Mara National Preserve, Kenya.

MY HURRICANE EXPERIENCE

Shreya Chatterjee Hurricane Irma was about to hit Tampa Bay and we decided to evacuate to keep ourselves safe. It was an enormous road trip!

At the beginning, we drove from Tampa, Florida to Atlanta, Georgia. When we reached Atlanta, we stayed at a nice hotel overnight. We went to a Chinese restaurant that served delicious food.

The next day morning we had a delicious breakfast at the hotel. We kept listening to the weather news about the monster storm. After breakfast, I did some homework. Then we quickly packed up and checked out of the hotel. My parents left me a blanket and pillow in my seat just in case I fall asleep. We drove to Walmart, to get stuff for our stay at a log cabin we reserved in North Carolina. After that, we went to McDonald’s that was attached to Walmart. We took a to go lunch order that we ate in the car.

We drove to a city named Whittier where we had reserved the log cabin. When we reached our destination, we took things we bought from Walmart and our luggage from our trunks. Then we settled ourselves in the log cabin while my father turned the news on the TV and the other boys got the luggage and the girls talked on the porch. Me and RV explored the three floors of the house. The basement (lower floor), the main floor (main room) and the upstairs (third floor). Our favorite floor was the basement because it had a pool table. It was the boy’s favorite floor, too. The boys would play pool while me and RV watched. At night, we enjoyed yummy cooked food before falling asleep.

The next day we woke up and ate breakfast then looked out our window. We saw it was raining. Parents kept hearing the weather news and decided we should leave someplace closer to Florida. So, we packed our luggage into the trunk of our car then drove to

Probaho - Soikot’s Annual Magazine Augusta, Georgia. We looked for good hotels we could book. All hotels were booked.

After searching for a long time, we found a motel. We reserved few rooms.

It took a while for us to get the room keys. When we got in our rooms we saw many issues.

The couch-bed was uncomfortable. The closet door was broken. The air conditioner was not turned on and took a long time to cool the room. But we were thankful for one thing, though. We were staying at that hotel for few hours only then would drive back home.

We were really hungry. Rv’s dad was ordering pizza that will be sent to their room. But the pizza store was closed. So, my dad ate a yogurt and I ate mini-muffin. Then we immediately brushed our teeth and went to bed. I felt …we were uncomfortable on the couch-bed so I complained about it to my relieved that no father. My parents’ bed came with something that can make the smooth. My dad put it on the bed and then I slept harm happened bed comfortably. The next day at dawn (4:30 to be exact) we packed to our house. everything into the trunk of the car. Then we drove home.

We saw some damages in our community. Some branches fell, our neighbor’s papaya tree fell. When we arrived at our house, we were relieved that no harm happened to our house. We also had electricity so we had air conditioning and other stuff to keep the house normal. I was glad we evacuated!

A SQUID DISSECTION

Ankita Dutta Once upon a time, I, Ankita Dutta, was in Florida aquarium dissecting a squid. It was VERY VERY exciting! I was on a school field trip which was a sleep over in the aquarium. I was 7 years old, in my 1st grade. I was with my friends, Zoe, Ayden and my best friend, Rian.

We were given a pair of gloves, a tweezer and a scissor for the dissection. Everyone put on the gloves, but I wanted to touch and feel the squid. So I did it with my bare hands. It was smooth, soft and silky!

We cut the squid through the belly and we saw a silver-green line. It had a head, 8 arms and 2 longer tentacles which they use to suck up their food. Squid’s body has bilateral symmetry.

It was my first ever dissection and I will never forget it!

CAFFEINE LOST ITS BONDING WITH TOBACCO FUMES

Arijit Chakraborty Stopped at the Dunkin’s on my way from office to grab a hot latte. The cold but confoundingly soothing breeze blowing outside compelled me to frisk for my pack of Marlboro, while I pondered for a cozy inhibited hive to smoke out the coffee. Right then a shrill voice just floated by “It’s a nice night”

Looked to my right to find a disheveled, carefree but subtly pleasant girl, mostly in her early twenties, staring at me with expressive and unwittingly friendly eyes. She was reluctantly perched on the knee length brick boundaries, legs crossed with a straight posture.

I responded “Yes it is…” and got busy in getting a grip on the cigarette while I tried to reach out for the lighter in the right pocket of my jacket.

“Can I get one of those for a quarter?”

For a moment I could vaguely make out what she said, but just when I replied “Can you please say that again”, I knew she wanted to borrow, or rightfully buy a smoke.

“Can I get one of these for a quarter!” – she repeated in a faint persuasive tone

I hesitantly walked up to her, unlocked the cigarette from my lips and holding it to her said “You know what, you can keep it and the quarter as well.”

Did not bother to wait a moment longer, not even to acknowledge her thankful gesture.

The caffeine had spurred an uncontrollable nicotine crave which had already concurred me by then, so I hurried back to my earlier spot, pulled out a cigarette and quickly lit it.
