Goals Goal I. Ensure academic and future professional success for our students Leadership in Engineering Pilot Program • Leveraging Personality Difference • Effective Communication • Influencing Direction • Effective Teams • Continual Improvement With the support of the Engineering Advisory Board, we held a spring semester pilot program that explored ways to expose our undergraduate engineering students to concepts that develop strong teamwork and leadership skills, and practiced the use of those concepts during class. The pilot program was structured as a zero credit course, meeting during seven four-hour sessions on Friday afternoons.

Eighteen students participated and a variety of topics were presented by industry representatives as well as three faculty members from the College of Business. Students were asked to provide feedback on the different topics and class exercises at the end of every session as well as at the end of the program.

The students found the topics to be extremely informative and useful. They felt they had gained knowledge and skills that they had not been exposed to during their education here at USF. The presenters felt that students were very much engaged in the lectures and class activities and they significantly improved their skills over the duration of the course.

Based on the positive results, a three-credit hour course based on this program will be offered in the fall semester.

Goal II. Achieve and Sustain National Recognition in Research Trash 2 Cash Energy www.trash2cashenergy.com Professor Babu Joseph, Assistant Professor John Kuhn Municipal solid waste is a source of renewable energy readily available at no cost. Trash 2 Cash has developed an innovative process to efficiently convert landfill gas into liquid fuel. The research group was the grand prize winner of $100,000 in the 2012 MegaWatt Ventures Competition, an annual clean energy business competition sponsored by U.S. Dept. of Energy.

PIRE http://usfpire.wordpress.com PI Professor James Mihelcic and Co-PI Associate Professor Maya Trotz (Dept. of Civil and Environmental Engineering) and Co-PI Associate Professor Christian Wells, (USF Dept. of Anthropology) An international team of researchers led by the University of South Florida will spend the next five years designing, implementing and teaching about a revolutionary attempt to turn wastewater into usable water, energy, and nutrients under a $3.9 million project funded by the National Science Foundation. As USF’s largest-ever sustainability grant, this project sets new standards for interdisciplinary research in water and energy.

2012/2013 USF College of Engineering

GCHSR is a multi-college interdisciplinary research center established in collaboration with the colleges of engineering, and behavioral and community sciences. In a nine-year study that was a collaboration between USF’s Global Center for Hearing & Speech Research and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at the Rochester Institute of Technology, researchers were able to identify the first genetic biomarker for presbycusis. The genetic mutation carried by those who ultimately suffer from age-related hearing loss is linked to speech processing abilities in older people. Their findings are published in the journal Hearing Research. The study was authored by USF College of Engineering professors Robert Frisina Jr. and Robert Frisina Sr., the founders of the Global Center for Hearing and Speech Research, and David Eddins, a USF associate professor of communication sciences and disorders and chemical and biomedical engineering.

Goal III. Engaging in Community Service and Outreach Corporate Ambassador Program Gita Iranipour, ’02 MSCH, ’04 PhD, Program Coordinator The USF Engineering Alumni Society (EAS) founded the Corporate Ambassador Program in 1998 to foster a closer relationship between College of Engineering students and the thousands of alumni working in local engineering fields. The Ambassadors serve as liaisons and the main points of contact between the engineering community at large and the College. These alumni will provide mentoring, internships, professional networking events and co-op opportunities.

Selmon Expressway USF Student Partnership Program Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority Inspired by the late Lee Roy Selmon, who was instrumental in initiating the scholarship program, students attending high schools in Tampa and Hillsborough County not only receive financial support but also a paid summer internship for students interested in engineering and transportation careers. The program creates a perpetual platform, yielding future leadership in the Tampa Bay Area and the state. Every year during Engineering Week, the THEA sponsors a bridge building contest for middle school students who have an interest in engineering. USF’s Center for Urban Transportation (CUTR) is a partner in this program. CUTR collaborates with THEA in making the award and administrating the program. 2013 recipient Fahim Ibrahim now works as a student assistant at CUTR.

Significant Gifts to the College of Engineering Renovation of the Engineering II Building Glenn A. Burdick Hall The College undertook a $1.7 million renovation project on the first floor in 2011-2012, which included enlarged classroom space, new instructional laboratories, technological upgrades and improved social areas in the Hall of Flags. In all, 14,000 square feet of space was renovated. In the first-ever fundraising effort of its kind and through the support and generosity of several donors the following named spaces were created.

Engineering Project Gifts Duke Energy Duke Energy awarded a grant to support the Power and Energy Systems Teaching Lab, Phase-One. The Power and Energy Systems Teaching Lab will help students build fundamental concepts in power and energy systems, which cannot be achieved through a software lab alone. As part of both the undergraduate and graduate curriculum, this physical lab will benefit approximately 160 students a year. Four benches of lab equipment will be purchased and used in approximately twelve courses to teach electric machines, power electronics and smart grid.

CAE funded the Bulls Engineering Success Training course with a project in computer science.

Maxi-Blast awarded the Student Automotive Engineers a five-year sponsorship.

Bracken Engineering Lecture Series will support the current College of Engineering Eminent Scholars Lecture Series as well as professional engineering – based fall lecture series that will be focused toward continuing education credits for engineers holding the PE.

Center for Urban Transportation Research CUTR Celebrates 25 years of advancing transportation in 2013 CUTR helped Florida DOT launch the first Statewide Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Coalition. The Coalition will engage in over $1 million in project activities to reduce pedestrian and bicycle fatalities across the state.

The Travel Assistance Device (TAD) mobile app, developed by CUTR’s National Center for Transit Research and tested by Hillsborough Area Regional Transit Authority and other Florida agencies, uses the GPS technology inside cell phones to prompt cognitively-disabled riders to exit the bus. The device helps disabled riders navigate public transportation and gain more independence. TAD increases the quality of life of cognitivelydisabled transit riders by supporting independent travel, and provides tremendous relief to caregivers who would otherwise be responsible for transporting them and/or the transit system that would otherwise provide support via paratransit. This app has been patented and commercially licensed.

CUTR was selected to prepare the congressionally mandated Bus Safety Study for the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs of the Senate and the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure of the House of Representatives. The report was submitted on March 15.

CUTR helped launch the St. Petersburg WeCar car-sharing program on the USFSP campus. This is the first car sharing program in Pinellas County and represents a public-private collaboration to bring more mobility options to the students and faculty, as well as the citizens of St. Pete.

CUTR was selected to perform the state Transportation Commission’s high profile study on cost savings for expressway authorities. The study was mandated by the Florida legislature. The study found no substantial inefficiencies in the operation of Florida’s toll authorities but did identify some opportunities for closer collaborations.

CUTR received the second year of funding for its National Center for Transit Research. This designation includes a $3.4million USDOT grant to perform transit focused research, training, and education activities.

Venkat Bethanabotla Professor Bethanabotla serves as chair of the department. He was elected a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers for his contributions to research in chemical and biological sensors, and computational materials science, education, and service to the Institute and profession.

Yogi Goswami, PE Professor Goswami, director of the Clean Energy Research Center received the 2013 Technical Communities Globalization Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). He was also honored in late 2012 by USF as a Distinguished University Professor.

Student Awards Vinicio Carias Vinny is a doctoral student in biomedical engineering.

He received a Fulbright Research Grant to continue his biomedical engineering doctoral research at the University of Freiburg Institute for Microsystems Technology (IMTEK), one of the largest research institutions in the field of micro and nanotechnology in Germany. Vinny is one of only 80 students to receive a full grant to Germany under the Fulbright program this year.

Triselle Copeland-Johnson Trishelle received a bachelor’s in chemical engineering in fall 2012. She received a prestigious NASA Space Technology Research Fellowship which supports U.S. graduate student researchers who show significant potential to make contributions to NASA’s strategic space technology objectives through their studies. As an undergraduate she was awarded the 2012 NOBCChE Winifred Burks-Houck Undergraduate Leadership Award.

Olukemi Akintewe “Kemi” is a third-year doctoral student in chemical engineering. She received a prestigious 2013 United Negro College Fund Merck Graduate Science Research Dissertation Fellowship.

Sandra Pettit Sandy is a doctoral candidate in chemical engineering.

She received a USF Signature Research Fellowship. Her research focuses on photocatalysis using titanium dioxide and indium vanadate, for remediation of contaminated water.

Pedro Zamora Pedro is an Honors College sophomore majoring in chemical engineering. He will study at the University of Dundee and the University of Strathclyde, both in Scotland as part of the Fulbright UK Summer Institute Program.

Nick Gunther Nick is an Honors College junior majoring in chemical engineering. He has a 4.0 GPA and received an Honorable Mention for the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.

Mandek Richardson Mandek, a doctoral candidate in biomedical engineering, received the Genshaft Family Doctoral Fellowship. He is designing a surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensing platform to detect cancer biomarkers for use in point-of-care testing (POCT).

Debosruti Dutta Debosruti, a doctoral candidate in chemical engineering, received the Dissertation Completion Fellowship. His research interests include computational catalysis with applications to chiralselective growth of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and InAs nanowires, design of enzyme inspired catalysts, plasmonics and biosensing.

Tamina Johnson Tamina, an engineering science doctoral student, will receive a Graduate Student Success (GSS) Fellowship.

Her research focuses on novel therapies for traumatic brain injuries (TBI) and spinal cord injuries.

Civil & Environmental ENGINEERING

Student Awards Herby Jean Herby is a junior majoring in civil engineering. He was awarded a summer internship position in the 2013 Re-Inventing the Nation’s Urban Water Infrastructure (ReNUWIt) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program at Stanford University. Jean will be working on stormwater/pathogens laboratory.

ASCE Student Chapter Steel Bridge Team The USF American Society of Civil Engineers student chapter took first place for the second time in a row at the ASCE Southeast Student Conference in March 2013 and placed 9th overall at the national competition in May. The Steel Bridge Team has earned a spot at the national competition for three consecutive years.

Dustin Bales The American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists awarded Dustin the 2013 William Brewster Snow Award. He received an master’s degree in environmental engineer as part of the Peace Corps Master’s International Program and is currently serving in Uganda where he is implementing water and sanitation engineering projects.

Pacia Hernandez Pacia is a doctoral student majoring in civil engineering with a concentration in water resources. She received a Signature Research Fellowship from the USF Graduate School to further her research on the sustainability of populations and the environment.

Trang Luong Trang is an Honors College sophomore majoring in civil engineering. She was awarded a DAAD RISE internship position on a civil engineering project in Weimar, Germany during the summer of 2013. She will be joining a research group of Ph.D. students at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar. Luong is one of only 300 students to receive a position this summer out of more than 2,000 applicants. She is the first international student at USF to win a national scholarship.

USF Team Wins Environmental Design Competition Team “Green Solutions” took first place in the Water Environment Federation Technical Exhibition and Conference National Student Design Competition in fall 2012. Their clients for the project were City of Tampa Storm Water and Parks and Recreation Departments.

In 2013, the University of South Florida Student Chapter of the Florida Water Environment Association (FWEA) took first place. Both the Wastewater team and the Environmental team took first prize in their respective divisions and will go on to represent Florida in the national competition at WEFTEC in Chicago in October 2013.

Computer Science & Engineering Faculty Awards Miguel Labrador Associate Professor Labrador received the College of Engineering 2012 Outstanding Research Achievement Award. Miguel was part of an interdisciplinary research team that received seven patents pertaining to wireless technologies. These patents cover a wide range of applications such as an emergency reporting system, a ride matching system, and a travel assistance device, among others. The travel assistance device is now used in a commercial application. His research has attracted REU students from all over the United States and Latin America to USF and has provided a rich environment for nine doctoral students who have graduated under his guidance.

Nagarajan Ranganathan Distinguished University Professor Ranganathan was elected an AAAS Fellow (Information, Computing & Communication section) for distinguished contributions to the field of computer science and engineering, particularly for the development of algorithms and architectures for VLSI systems and applications.

Lawrence Hall Distinguished University Professor and Dept. Chair Hall was elected an AAAS Fellow (Information, Computing & Communication section) for outstanding contributions to scalable pattern recognition. He also received the 2012 Norbert Wiener award from the IEEE Systems, Man and Cybernetics Society at the IEEE International Conference on SMC in Seoul, Korea on October 16, 2012. The award is “ To recognize significant contributions to research in systems science & engineering, human-machine systems, and/or cybernetics.”

Sudeep Sarkar Professor Sarkar was named an IEEE Fellow for his contributions to the field of computer vision.

Anda Iamnitchi Associate Professor lamnitchi received an unrestricted gift of $25,000 from Yahoo! to support her research titled "Understanding and Mitigating the Social Contagion of Unethical Behavior in User-Generated Content Systems.” This is a Yahoo! Faculty Research and Engagement award.

Yicheng Tu Assistant Professor Tu received funding from the National Science Foundation for the CAREER Award proposal titled “CAREER: Enabling high-throughput data management in scientific domains.”

Cadet Edward Riley Ed is a senior majoring in computer engineering. He was selected AFROTC (SER) cadet of the year.

Anand Kumar Anand, a doctoral student, received a prize of 35,000 Indian Rupees (~$650) in the Second Doctoral Colloquium, organized by the Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT), Hyderabad, India.

Electrical ENGINEERING

Student Awards Bermanley Augustin Bermanley received the 2013 Black Engineer of the Year (BEYA) Student Leadership Award. He was selected for his service as a former member of the USF Football team, leadership with the USF Student Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE), and mentoring of local elementary school students.

Shamara Collins Shamara, a first-year doctoral student, is the recipient of a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship. Her research focuses on photovoltaic solar cells.

Ibrahim Nasser Ibrahim, a doctoral student in the Center for Wireless & Microwave Information Systems received an IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S) Graduate Fellowship for spring 2013. The focus of his research is on miniature, wireless sensors for structural health monitoring. He is investigating new methods for calibrating and identifying the sensors remotely, and for fabricating the 3D devices using digital additive manufacturing.

Bryce Hotalen Bryce, a senior, was one of several undergraduate students nationwide to receive an IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S) Undergraduate/Pre-graduate Scholarship for spring 2013.

Drew Burgett Drew, a doctoral student in electrical engineering, is one of 65 graduate students selected by NASA to participate in the 2013 class of Space Technology Research Fellows. Drew was selected based on his research “Leveraging the Radiation-Resistance and Power Efficiency of Nano-Magnetic Logic to Develop More Affordable, Efficient, and Reliable Space Technologies.”

Frank Alexander, Jr. Frank, a doctoral candidate, is the recipient of support from the nationally competitive NSF/ ASEE Engineering Innovation Fellowship Program (EIFP). He is spending the summer in Philadelphia with Optofluidics, Inc., a venture-backed lifesciences company, to help with the development of state-of-the-art microfluidic and biophotonic nanomanipulation technologies for biological, material science, and pharmaceutical applications.

IEEE Student Chapter and LogikLabs Student groups LogikLabs and IEEE Student Chapter hosted the fall 2012 Microcontroller Conference on the Tampa campus. The conference theme was “Introducing Technology for Advancing Education” (ITAE) and its goal was to enable students to gain a greater understanding of technology through microcontrollers. The conference allows students to foster their creativity, teamwork, innovation and ability to perform under pressure, while finding solutions to real-world problems.

Richard Gitlin Professor Gitlin, a National Academy of Engineering member, was named a Charter Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors.

Drew Hoff Professor Hoff was elected to the chair position of the Electronics and Photonics Division of the Electrochemical Society.

Sylvia Thomas Assistant Professor Thomas is the principal investigator of three NSF awards. EAGER: “Implementing Nanolaminates in an Anodic Oxide Trench for Energy Storage Systems” provides funding for enabling the development of densely packed nano-scale structures to be used in the manufacturing of energy storage devices, such as capacitors. EAGER: “Fabrication, Characterization, and Implementation of an Ofi Mucilage Nanofiber Membrane System.” This project will provide fundamental understanding of how current and future natural material membrane systems can affect water, wastewater, overall environmental quality, and public health issues. TUES: Collaborative Research: “A SystemsCentric Foundation for Electrical and Computer Engineering Education” project is a multiinstitutional collaboration.

Faculty Awards Alex Savachkin Associate Professor Savachkin received the USF 2012 Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award and the IIE 2013 Annual Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Operations Research.

Griselle Centeno Associate Professor Centeno received the 2013 Women in Leadership & Philanthropy Faculty Research Award.

Ali Yalcin Associate Professor Yalcin has been named Associate Dean of USF’s new Patel College of Global Sustainability.

Student Awards Three students received a patent for a MorceShaver laparoscopic medical device. The students worked with Associate Professor Susana Lai-Yuen in her manufacturing process class.

Feleshia McCutchin Feleshia, a senior in industrial engineering, was named 2012 Student Engineer of the Year by the Society of Women Engineers at the 2013 E-Week awards banquet.

Degrees Awarded INFORMS Student Chapter The USF student chapter of INFORMS received the following awards for 2012 - Summa Cum Laude Award and the Gold National Award.

Faculty Awards

Student Awards Autar Kaw Professor Kaw, an early adopter of new technologies and social media to teach complex mathematical calculations, was named a 2012 U.S. Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. The Florida legislature recognized Autar with Senate Bill SR1900.

Rasim Guldiken Assistant Professor Guldiken received a USF Outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Award and was also named 2012 Engineer of the Year by the ASME.

Laura Blanco Laura, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering, was selected for a prestigious summer undergraduate research fellowship from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) at Gaithersburg, MD. She participated in a 10-week internship within NIST’s Materials Measurement Science Division.

Mason Chilmonczyk Mason is a junior majoring in mechanical engineering. He was awarded the Outstanding Student Award of District F of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). In addition, Mason received the 2012-2013 Student Engineer of the Year Award from the Florida West Coast Section of ASME.

Craig Lusk Associate Professor Lusk is developing a new flexible surface technology called compliant mechanisms supported by an NSF CAREER Award.

Skatecase Mechanical engineering alum, Alexei Novitzky ‘10 MME, has invented Skatecase a product that turns a storage case into a skateboard. The USF Office of Patents & Licensing has helped Novitzky to patent his product.
