DEAF COMMUNITY SUPPORT IN BELIZE SPRING BREAK, 2018 OVERVIEW Students provide support to the Deaf community of beautiful, tropical, Belize. Students who participate in this experience will work as a group with host organizations to provide a week-long series of workshop on the use of sign language and the importance of Deaf culture and of Deaf community empowerment in throughout Belize. The National Resource Center for Inclusive Education (NaRCIE) supports integrating deaf and disabled children into regular classrooms with support services so that all children can learn together. Although NaRCIE fosters cooperation with agencies and schools that share an inclusive approach, the dearth of teacher with specialized training creates challenges, therefore this program is ideal for Communications Sciences & Disorders majors and Special Education majors.

In students’ off time, students will be able to explore the rain forests and coral reefs of the one of the most beautiful natural habitats on earth. Students arrive on a Friday and enjoy the following two days of relaxation and preparation for the week. Monday through Friday, students will support the workshops and will have opportunities to lead groups and give presentations. In the evenings, students can enjoy the charm of the country while strolling the Caribbean beaches and exploring the small-town destinations.

CAMBRIDGE SCHOOLS EXPERIENCE JUNE 7 – JULY 8, 2018 OVERVIEW The Cambridge Schools Experience (CSE) is a study abroad opportunity for undergraduate or graduate students in the Department of Childhood Education and Literacy Studies in the College of Education at USF. The program includes a 4-week internship experience in the Infant (preschool) or Primary (Elementary) schools in Cambridge, England. Based on individual programs of study, students receive academic credit for their participation in this international teaching and learning experience.

STUDYING AND TEACHING ABROAD MAY 27 - JUNE 10, 2018

OVERVIEW USF’s two-week cultural program in Costa Rica is designed to accelerate and enhance students’ knowledge of education in Costa Rica. By participating in this intensive cross-cultural study, students participate in a global experience, and make progress while meeting summer enrollment graduation requirements. The program features an immersion into Costa Rican culture while teaching in K-12 classrooms, visiting cultural landmarks, accompanied by USF professors in pleasant facilities.

COURSE INFORMATION The students who attend this program in Costa Rica will receive purposeful cross-cultural instruction from their professor, experience cross-cultural learning with their host families, have hands-on experience teaching, will interact with Costa Ricans, while journaling and engaging in various assignments.

FINNISH-ING AT THE TOP:

COMPARATIVE STUDENT ASSESSMENT IN FINLAND JUNE 7-21, 2018

OVERVIEW Discussions around classroom assessment and measurement have been at the forefront of policy change, political tensions, and within colleges of education across the country. From No Child Left Behind to pushes for Common Core State Standards, the U.S. continues to search for an answer to help our failing students.

Instead of looking inward, perhaps it’s time to look at what those who are leading the world in international assessments and graduation rates. It’s time to ask teachers in Finland what makes them so successful.

Traveling with a faculty member from the Educational Measurement and Research program, students will have the opportunity to learn measurement and assessment practices from teachers in one of the world’s leading countries in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA). Major areas of study will include: formative, diagnostic, and summative assessments, teacher constructed assessments and performance/ authentic assessments, comparative research methods examining assessment and measurement practices.

DIRECTED RESEARCH IN GERMANY JULY 4 - 16, 2018 OVERVIEW The Comparative Study of Career and Workforce Education Systems in Germany will be conducted during the Summer C session. The study abroad component is scheduled on July 4-16, 2018. In preparation for the visit, participants should have taken EDG 7931 (Comparative Study of Career and Workforce Education Systems) in the spring focusing on the American system of workforce education with particular emphasis on a component of interest such as secondary schooling, higher education, or adult education. Thus, participants should have a comparative frame of reference drawing from resources describing the German model.

With this background, during the group study visit to Germany, participants will have the opportunity to gather on site insights on work, education, culture, and socioeconomic conditions. To this end, the tentative program includes a series of lectures, company visits; and meetings with researchers, educators, employers, and policymakers.

SERVICE LEARNING IN GHANA MAY - JUNE, 2018

OVERVIEW Share your skills and your heart in a Ghanaian Orphanage for two weeks before exploring a country rich in African historical and cultural sites. Visit the slave castles, markets, pristine beaches, historic cities, diverse villages and the verdant rain forest with the canopy walk at Kakum National Park. Participate in local festivals and enjoy unique African cuisine. Experience Ghanaian culture first hand in an authentic community experience: living with a host family during a “homestay” while engaging in service to others and contributing to the educational development of local children.

INCLUSIVE EDUCATION & SCHOOLING IN ENGLAND JUNE 20 - JULY 2, 2018 OVERVIEW This is a residential program based at the University of Exeter, England and focuses upon an international analysis of Special Education and Inclusion. This analysis will include an investigation into teacher education and schooling involving time in schools. Doctoral participants will enroll in a selected topics course, International Analysis of Teacher Education and Schooling for Special Education and Inclusion in England, which will act as a cognate course. Masters students will enroll in an International Analysis of Curriculum and Instruction course, which can be substituted for a Program of Study curriculum course.

SCHOOLS AND SOCIETY IN SOUTH AFRICA JUNE 16 - JULY 1, 2018

OVERVIEW Learning in South Africa will be an active on-going process that takes place continuously within and outside of a “classroom� setting. Much of the learning will take place in the daily observation of life in South Africa and of practice and process within the social institutions which we will visit. This program will examine the relationship between education and society in a country that is undergoing changes in many ways.

We will explore the relationship between extant educational structure and practice and South African society--culture, social structure, political-economy. The current educational system in South Africa is a product of both the historical legacy of a particularly virulent form of racial colonialism, Apartheid, that helped shape the structure and practice of formal education in South Africa, and of the historically and socially situated actions, aspirations, values, and agenda of the majority African population. However, these important contributory factors were and are not static, but are dynamic. We will examine how access to political power and economic resources differentially affect the educational opportunities and experiences across social economic class, gender, locale (urban/rural), ethnicity, and physical/mental ability.

In addition, studying abroad also allows you to have life-changing experiences, such as: • Experiencing a new part of the world and its culture • Making new friends from around the world • Boosting your self-confidence and gain independence • Traveling with a group of like-minded peers who share similar goals and interests • Developing yourself as a global citizen while learning skills that will be useful in your future career

WHEN SHOULD I GO? No matter the end result, it is always best to plan early. Everyone’s schedule is different so this is something you really need to think about. It is always a good idea to go to your major’s academic adviser and talk about your desire to go abroad so this person can help you make room in your schedule.

The earlier you have this conversation, the easier it is to make sure you stay on track for graduation. This includes saving some of your electives for the semester or summer you want to go and researching the schools for ones that offer your major.

Students interested in summer programs are welcomed at any stage or level of their education, so long as the student is at least 18 years old at the time of participation (certain exception can be made with parental consent for younger students enrolled at USF).

Graduate students are advised to check with their departments as required courses are often only taught on campus during certain parts of the year. Scheduling and logistics for alternative-calendar programs such as independent research, field work, special projects and internships should be a collaborative effort between the student, their department, and the Education Abroad Office.

FUNDING YOUR STUDY ABROAD EXPERIENCE Studying abroad does not need to be an expensive experience. Florida and federal financial aid may be used by students participating in USF-sponsored study abroad programs, and many study abroad scholarships exist as well. Students should speak with USF Financial Aid to determine what current aid can be applied.

The university offers various sources of funding for Education Abroad programs. STUDY ABROAD SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY To be considered for a scholarship for their study abroad program, students must have: 1. Completed the Education Abroad scholarship application(s) 2. Committed to their program of choice 3. Paid their required program deposit Applicants should check with the individual program website for program-specific deadlines.

OUTSIDE SOURCES FOR SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS HOW TO FIND SCHOLARSHIPS AND FUNDING FOR TRAVEL Step 1 Know where you want to go – Which study abroad program are you planning to attend?

Step 2 Know when you want to go. It takes time to write essays and personal statements, ask for letters of recommendation, complete resumes and applications, as there are various application deadlines. It is good to plan in advance!

Step 3 Apply to as many scholarships and grants as you can. Start applying right away – Do your research as soon as possible! Apply for special or unique awards including: Veterans, Ethnicity, Family History, Special Traits, and Personal Abilities.
