THE CAMPUS...

For more than six decades, the University of San Diego has been dedicated to providing a values-based education with a mission grounded in Catholic intellectual tradition. As a Roman Catholic institution, the University of San Diego promotes dialogue between faith and reason, and pursues the cultivation of true knowledge in a community that values intellectual freedom, holistic personal development and mutual respect. An education at the University of San Diego is founded on a single and unwavering principle: the pursuit of academic excellence. A liberal arts education encourages students to develop critical thinking skills, engage in collaborative inquiry and participate in a free exchange of complex ideas. Like California’s oldest city, the University of San Diego took its name from San Diego de Alcalá, a Franciscan friar from Alcalá de Henares, a monastery near Madrid, Spain. The university’s 180-acre campus is called Alcalá Park and the Spanish Renaissance Architecture that characterizes Spain’s 500-year old University of Alcalá serves as the inspiration for buildings on the university campus. Under the leadership of Mother Rosalie Clifton Hill of the Society of the Sacred Heart and Bishop Charles Francis Buddy of the Diocese of San Diego, the University of San Diego began as separate colleges for men and women. The founding charter of the San Diego College for Women and San Diego University - comprising the San Diego College for Men and the School of Law - was granted in 1949. In 1972, the academic institutions merged into the University of San Diego. Now governed by an independent Board of Trustees, the university remains dedicated to the values originally articulated by Mother Hill and Bishop Buddy. Students choose from dozens of undergraduate and graduate degrees programs in academic divisions including the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, the School of Leadership and Education Sciences, the School of Law, the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science, and the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies.

THE ACADEMICS... Admission to the University of San Diego, which consistently ranks among the top schools in the United States, is highly selective. The university received more than 15,300 applications for 1,480 undergraduate openings in fall 2015. The Class of 2019 entered with an average GPA of 3.84, and an average SAT score of 1208. In 2015, U.S News and World Report ranked the University of San Diego as one of the top 100 universities in the nation. The Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering No. 15 among undergraduate engineering programs, and the Hahn School of Nursing and Health Science among the top 30 graduate schools. According to the Institute of International Education’s Open Doors Report, USD ranked No. 2 in undergraduate participation in study abroad programs. Forbes ranked USD among its top 50 most entrepreneurial research universities, while Best Choice tabbed USD as the No. 1 most beautiful urban college campus. TORERO ATHLETICS... A TRADITION OF SUCCESS The University of San Diego has a long history of athletic success since making the jump from Division II to Division I back in 1979. The Toreros joined the West Coast Conference in 1979 and have remained loyal members of the conference ever since. The Toreros field 17 Division I teams with women’s sports including: basketball, cross country, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track and volleyball. Men’s sports include: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, football, rowing, soccer, and tennis. The Toreros football team competes in the Pioneer Football League, and the swimming and diving team compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. In the mid to late 1980’s, the Torero athletics teams splashed on the national scene, placing the small private school from Southern California on the map. In 1984, the Torero men’s basketball team made its debut in the national spotlight winning the WCC Championship and making its inaugural appearance in the NCAA tournament. Three years later, the men’s basketball team would again make an appearance in the NCAA Tournament after once again claiming the WCC championship. The Torero men’s basketball team made its third appearance in the field of 64 after pulling off an upset win in the WCC Tournament championship game over heavily favored Gonzaga University in 2003 to receive the conference’s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The men’s basketball to also made a trip to the big dance in 2008, after once again upsetting Gonzaga in the WCC Tournament Championship game. Then USD made history as the 13th-seeded Toreros knocked off fourth -seeded UConn, 70-69, to advance to the second round of the tournament for the first time. USD then competed in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament in 2014, and reached the Sweet-16 round of this tournament. The success of Torero athletics was not limited to the men’s basketball team. Several other teams began to splash on the national scene with the men’s tennis program becoming the next athletic program to enter the NCAA postseason. In 1989 and 1990 the men’s tennis team dominated the WCC and not only made it into the NCAA postseason, but advanced on to the second round in both seasons. Since then, the men’s tennis program has maintained that success making 11 more appearances into the postseason with trips in 1995, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016. In 1990, four-time All-American Jose Luis Noriega enjoyed a lot of success advancing all the way to the quarterfinals in singles play, and in 2005, Pierrick Ysern was the national runner-up in singles play. The Toreros have now won the last three WCC championships (2014, 2015 and 2016) and have made the NCAA tournament in each of the past six seasons. The Torero women’s program has also seen success in the NCAA postseason, making nine trips to the postseason since the move to Division I in 1979. The women’s tennis teams have made appearances from 1989-92, 1995-99 and 2011-12, with the 1989, 1990, 1997 and 1999 squads advancing into the second round. Like the men’s program, the women have sent numerous individuals to the postseason with four-time NCAA All-American Zuzana Lesenarova claiming the national championship in 1999, giving USD it’s first national championship at the Division I level. In 2012, USD won its first-ever WCC championship, knocking off defending champion Pepperdine in the process.

In 1993, the women’s basketball team had one of its most successful season’s in program history as they made their inaugural trip into the NCAA Tournament after claiming the WCC Tournament Championship. The Toreros have since made two more trips to the “Big Dance” in 2000 and in 2008. In 2000, USD pulled off a major upset in the WCC Championship game against heavily favored and top-seeded Pepperdine University. The Toreros then had their most successful season in program history during the 2011-12 season, setting a program record with a 26-9 overall record, also finishing second in the WCC with a 12-4 record. The Toreros then went into the WNIT, and not only recorded the program’s first postseason win over Cal State Northridge (60-58), but advanced all the way to the Final-Four of the WNIT, before falling to eventual champion Oklahoma State University. USD then made two more trips to the WNIT in 2013 and 2014, with the latter advancing to the Sweet 16 round. USD won at least 20 games in the next four seasons and advanced to the WNIT every year. The Women’s soccer program began to enjoy success in the mid 1990’s as well. In 1996 they not only made their inaugural trip the College Cup Tournament, but advanced to the second round. Then from 1999-2004 the women’s soccer team was a consistent participant in the postseason with the 1999 and 2004 squads advancing on to the second round. In 2007, the women’s soccer team recorded a 15-3-3 record and received a program-best No. 9 national ranking, while finishing second in the WCC and returning to the NCAA Tournament. Then in 2012, USD recorded its first ever WCC championship, as they tied Pepperdine with a 7-1-0 mark. The 2012 squad also advanced to the Sweet-16 of the College Cup Tournament, and USD returned to the NCAA postseason in 2014, after a two-year hiatus. After the turn of the century, the success of Torero athletics has continued. In 2002 and 2003 ,the baseball program made its mark in the postseason after capturing back-to-back WCC Championships and advancing to the NCAA Regionals both seasons to become the first baseball team in the Division I era to make the postseason. The baseball team continued that success in 2006 as they earned their first at-large berth into the NCAA postseason and in 2007 the Toreros reached a program-best No. 4 national ranking and a No. 8 national seed in the NCAA Regionals after capturing the 2007 WCC crown. The baseball team then won the WCC Championship again in 2008, and reached the Regional championship game for the first time in program history. USD has won WCC titles in 2010 and 2015 and took home the WCC Tournament championship in 2013, in order to receive the league’s automatic bid into the NCAA Regionals, where they reached the regional final, and fell to eventual national champion UCLA. . The women’s swimming team, which competes in the Mountain Sports Federation, has sent individuals to the postseason in 2003, 2004 and 2006. In all three seasons Ashley Swart competed for USD in the 400 IM and 200 breast with her highest finish coming in the 2003 season when she placed 11th nationally in the 400 IM. Recently, the Toreros have broken every single school record, except for two, since the 2011 season. The USD football team has found recent success as well as they claimed the PFL championship in the 2005 season after posting a program-best 11-1 record. They finished ranked No. 1 in the final Sports Cup Division FCS (formerly I-AA) mid-major poll, and duplicated that record in 2006 for their second consecutive PFL championship and second mid-major national championship. The Football team also made history in 2014, as they realed of seven straight wins to claim the PFL championship. That championship team then became the first Torero team to make the FCS play-offs, where USD traveled to Missoula, Mont. to take on the University of Montana. In 2016, the Toreros went undefeated in the PFL and advanced to the FCS Playoffs for the second time in three years. They beat Cal Poly in the first round to become the first non-scholarship program in FCS history to win a playoff game. USD would finish the season with a No. 19 national ranking, the highest in program history The USD golf team has made recent noise in the postseason, as the Toreros reached the NCAA Regionals in seven of the last ten years, and from 2009-11, San Diego advanced to the nationals. The Torero women’s rowing program has also been making some noise staring in the 2010 season, as they won the program’s first ever WCC title. USD then went on to complete a three-peat of the WCC crown over the 2011 and 2013 season. The Toreros then put together the best season in program history in 2014, as they not only won the WCC title, but were ranked in the top-20 for a majority of the season. USD then made its inaugural appearance in the NCAA Championships, and finished ranked No. 15 in the country.

ZACH HINZ Email: zach.hinz@gmail.com

OBJECTIVE Ultimately, my intent is to apply and enroll in graduate studies following my gap year (post-graduation from USD), specifically Dental School. After the completion of both post-bac. classes and the DAT this summer, as well as the successful submission of Dental School applications, I wish to locate a job, one which, preferably, is geographically close to my hometown of Gig Harbor, WA (Via I-5: 40 min. southbound of Seattle). Whether or not my position utilizes my degree remains to be seen; however, in that regard, I’m not particularly picky – I merely wish to land a job to serve as a means to prepare myself for life as a graduate student!

EXPERIENCE Dr. Samuel Hinz DDS // Harbor Oral Surgery (Tacoma, WA Office) Equipment Sterilizer and Lab Associate (May 2014-August 2017) § As a Lab Operative, I had the pleasure to directly imprint my passion for Dentistry by way of preparing a vast variety of pre-operative trays (including but not limited to implant procedures, extractions, IV’s, etc.) for my Father, as well as his work associate Dr. Douglas Bird DMD. Among these tasks, I oversaw a variety of procedures, enabling myself to accumulate valuable shadowing hours (NOTE: my Father’s office was one of 6 offices I visited to familiarize myself with the dental workplace) o

My exposure to dentistry involved the remaining five locales: §

Center for Endodontics (Dr. Jason West DDS, CAGS)

§

Kvinsland Dentistry (Dr. Eric J. Kvinsland DDS)

§

Kao Dental (Dr. Raymond J. Kao DMD)

§

Distinctive Dentistry (Dr. Keith Phillips DMD, MSD, CDT, FACP)

§

Family Dentistry (Richard Coyner DDS)

Major: Biology; Minor: Chemistry Overall GPA: ~3.0 o Excluding courses currently in progress and subject to be completed this May: History (Lower Division Core), Microbiology (Upper Division Biology Elective), Extreme Physiology (Upper Division Biology Elective), and Physics II (Science Elective)

By way of my Major and Minor, I’ve received phenomenal exposure to a broad scope of science disciplines, including lectures, *with and/or without accompanying laboratory components courses covering a vast array of Biology and Chemistry Topics. o Biology: *Evolutionary and *Cellular Biology, Ecology, Genetics, *Plant Physiology, *Biological Oceanography, and, currently, Extreme Physiology, and *Microbiology o Chemistry: *General Chemistry I and II, *Organic Chemistry I and II, and Biochemistry In addition to the aforementioned Minor- and Major-Specific curricula, I have also done, and completed, the full 3-semester-long research cycle, satisfying that specific component of the Biology Major. o Beginning, first, with a semester-long laboratory- and literature- intensive course entitled Research Methods, under the tutelage and guidance of USD’s Biology Department’s Dr. Hohman PhD, whereby research and literature reviews were conducting surveying various macrophages under the lens of Immunology. Following Research Methods, I delved into Research Project, the next course in sequence, wherein I completed my individualized research, a Molecular Genetics study investigating the Role of the Wnt Signal Transduction Pathway in Axon Guidance in C. elegans, all of which was overseen by Dr. Curtis Loer PhD (USD Biology). Following Research Project, a course which in itself required a formal poster presentation, I enrolled in Capstone Seminar (completed this past fall semester), wherein I reorganized my research into a 20 min. PowerPoint, presenting it both to my classmates, as well as Biology Faculty.

EXTRACURRICULARS/ACKNOWLEDGEMNTS § Member of the University of San Diego’s Men’s and Women’s XC/Track & Field Team o

In spite of a barrage of injuries, each of the two sole active seasons in which I competed I was a part of this team’s travel squad, toeing the line not only at the West Coast Conference Championships (2015 and 2017), but also at the NCAA D1 Western Regionals (2015 and 2017). Instilling a great many values within me, most notably the ability to balance the rigors of D1 Athletics with those of a demanding science-intensive course load, participation as a member of this team has been everything opposite that of invaluable.

§ CEO/Founder of PacBay Clothing 47N122W (Non-Profit established during my high school career, specifically Fall 2012)

o Combining my inclination and passion for creativity with my drive and desire to partake in philanthropic projects, PacBay accomplished just that – a concept and ideal derived from me in 2012, this brand endeavors, after networking by way of my High School Chaplain with South-Sudanese Resident and Activist Jok Nhial, to help finance and fundraise for the Liliir Education Project (Nhial’s Tacoma-headquartered Non-Profit). As taken from our Facebook Page, “The PacBay vision is not only to represent and uplift the Northwest culture in a positive way, but also to inspire and change the culture in a positive way. Large portion of the proceeds made by selling merchandise will be used to help build educational facilities in areas of poverty, the first locale being Liliir, South Sudan”.
