THE BASQUE REGION

Site VIsits, Social and Cultural Activities Students will visit a variety of sites including an ‘Incubation’ center for entrepreneurial projects, a technological research center, an MCC manufacturing facility, the monastery in the mountains at Aránzazu, and the medieval town of Oñati .

In his own words, Herrera states, “ This intensive summer course is an opportunity for participants to be exposed first-hand to a unique organizational model of participatory leadership, management, ownership and decision making by attending lectures and visiting sites at the Mondragón Corporación Cooperativa (MCC). Students will become acquainted with MCCʼs unique leadership, management, educational, training, financial and human resources systems. Participants will also learn the core values that support MCC, which are based on a balance between organizational and personal needs, solidarity with each other and the community, and economic and social justice. Finally, participants will become acquainted with the institutionalized policies, processes and practices that support MCCʼs economic and social success.” " " Students who participate in the International Comparative Management course offered in Spain and Morocco just days prior to Mondragón may be especially interested in the Mondragón Model. In Barcelona and Marrakesh, students will explore topics ranging from cultural self-awareness to designing cultural appropriate and ethical management systems. Students may then choose to continue on to experience The Mondragón Model in person, an

especially interesting alternative model of management due to its high rate of growth and success. " In context of todayʼs economic problems, the Mondragón model may offer some interesting insight. We continue trying to find answers to what has gone wrong with our economic system that has so drastically affected our lives, our work, our businesses and our society. Is it best to have more government intervention in businesses (banks, automotive, etc)? Will a European-style economic system help to restore our trust in the system and encourage private investment? Should we go back to the free-market business model? Explore some answers to these questions by learning about the Mondragón Cooperative Corporation, which has developed a unique sustainable organizational model utilizing a principle-based, participatory, democratic and socially responsible approach to organizing work.
