Announcements: Welcome Back!

GSA wishes you a great Spring semester! We are back with our bimonthly newsletters to keep you updated on all the current events and announcements. As summer internships and graduation approach us, be sure to take advantage of our resume resources and unwind at our upcoming socials.

New Torero Student ID Cards The new ID cards are up and running! The old ID cards no longer work, so be sure to stop by University Center, Room 127, to pick up your new one. For more details on the swap, go to http://www.sandiego.edu/administration/financeadmin/campuscard/ToreroCard.php

Small Faith Groups – Now Forming

Interested in getting to know other Grad students while deepening your own spiritual life? Now is the time to join one of our Grad Small Faith Groups for Spring semester! If interested in joining, please email Maria @ mariat@sandiego.edu with your availability. The groups will meet for 45 minutes each week. We will try to find common days/times that are convenient for your busy schedules! Individual pastoral counseling also available.

This Week's Events: Saturday Night Live at Aromas Saturday, February 14, 2009 9:00PM – 10:30PM Aromas Coffee House, Maher Hall Chris Traxler, current USD student and winner of 2008 Apollo Night competition performs. Come enjoy smooth sounds for a quiet evening in Aromas. Admission is free.


Black History Month Event: Short Films & Discussion: "A Girl Like Me" and "Book 'Em: Undereducated and Overincarcerated" Tuesday, February 17, 2009 5:30PM MRHH Room 102 These award-winning short films address issues of self-image, society, and school-aged African Americans.

Service Project: A Night at the Shelter Tuesday, February 17, 2009 5:00PM – 9:00PM (or overnight service: 9:00PM – 7:00AM) The Interfaith Shelter Network is a rotational shelter program serving homeless women, men, and children in San Diego County. Spend an evening preparing, serving, and sharing a meal, playing with children, and learning about the lives of our brothers and sisters who are homeless. Other Upcoming Events: Black History Month Event: "Mis Education of the Negro" February 25, 2009 5:30PM MRHH 102 Author and SOLES faculty member Dr. Joi Spencer will lead a discussion on the recently authored study guide to Carter Woodson's Mis Education of the Negro. Discussion topics will include African American history as a tool for addressing educational inequity, and issues of social justice in 21st century social studies, language arts, and math classes. First 25 attendees will receive a signed copy of the recently-released study guide for teachers, authored by Dr. Spencer.

Theology on Tap Thursday, February 26, 2009 6:15PM for food and drinks - Maher Hall, Pardee Room 7:00PM for speaker - Maher Hall, Salomon Hall Take a break from studying and enjoy good conversation and free refreshments. Speaker Mary Doak, Ph.D. and panelists will present. Please bring your Graduate Student ID.

Career Services Drop-In Advising Thursday Afternoons – a weekly event 4:00PM – 5:00PM MRHH 122B, next to Bert's Linda Scales, Director of Career Services is available every Thursday to discuss your career questions, review your resume, provide interviewing tips, assist in job searches, and more. Available on a first-come, first serve basis. If dropin hours do not fit your schedule, please call Career Services at 619-260-4654 to arrange a meeting time.

Graduate Women's Discussion Group Monday's Lunch Hour – a weekly event* *February 23, 2009 – April 6, 2009 12:30PM University Center, Room 116 (Women's Center) The experiences and needs of graduate women are significantly different than those of undergraduates. Come connect with other graduate women for an informal brown bag lunch discussion, focused on the personal, social, and academic needs of graduate women. The purpose of the group is to create a support network in which you can share your own stories and listen to those of other graduate women at USD. Discussion topics are generated by group members.
