ENGLISH MAJOR—SAMPLE COURSE OF STUDY The English major teaches students how to think critically, read carefully, and write effectively. The curriculum ensures that students receive a well-rounded education and integrate their learning across disciplines. It is also flexible enough to give students plenty of room to explore their interests or complete a minor in another discipline. Students can place out of the English 101L lab with a sufficiently high score on the Writing section of the SAT or with USCB’s English Placement Test. Students often find it helpful to complete their math requirement during their freshman year, while they still remember the math they learned in high school. Students often find it helpful to complete their foreign language requirement in their freshman and sophomore years, when it is still easy to build on the foreign language skills they acquired in high school. Students must take at least one course from English 287, 288, 289 and 290 before taking any 300/400-level courses in English. Because these 200-level survey courses are designed to give students a strong foundation for their upper-division course work, we encourage students to complete them early in the major.
