Dear Graduates,

You’ve finally done it. You’ve made it to Graduation Day. You’ve worked hard for the past few years so that you can walk across the stage tonight, receive your diploma, and journey on wherever life takes you. Some of you are filled with excitement! You can’t wait to see what the future has in store for you. Some of you will be continuing on with the student life at grad school. Some of you, though, are nervous. The thought of moving away from what you have known for a large part of your life can be unsettling. No more “First Day of School” photos – we know you still take them. No more all-nighters with your friends to cram for the big test. No more advisors or professors to help guide you through life as they did during this chapter. BUT, even though there are things you will be leaving behind, there are many more things that you have yet to encounter. After tonight, some of you will experience the sweet, sweet taste of a successful interview and the chance at the career you’ve been dreaming about. Others will travel across the country or even the world. Some of you still have no idea what you want to do for the rest of you life, and you will have a grand adventure learning who you are and where you want to be. No matter what state of mind you’re in, you have achieved something great. And it’s all coming together tonight.

Congratulations!

Everything YOU Need To Know About Your Student E-Mail After You Graduate by Jake McGuire

The graduates of the spring of 2014 may be leaving USAO and venturing off to pursue a profession, but they certainly won’t be out of the loop while they are gone. If students want to stay connected to all things on campus they can sign up for an alumni e-mail account, free from the university.

Those interested in attaining a free account should visit www.usao.edu/alumni/freeusao-e-mail-address-alumni.

However, all students in the graduating class will no longer have access to their student e-mails come graduation. That is where the university suggests taking advantage of the alumni e-mail.

For more information concerning your USAO alumni email account, please contact Adeel Siddiqui by phone at 405.574.1319 or by email at asiddiqui@usao.edu.

The Network Administrator at USAO, Adeel Siddiqui, urges all graduates to utilize the “Vacation Message” feature in his or her USAO e-mail account to let senders know Every student at USAO is given a free student your account is no longer active. e-mail account that remains active during their time in college. Victoria Burgess Victoria Burgess’ project for her particular research project was over the male perception of female facial attractiveness. She took seventeen heterosexual males and had them rate the female attractiveness of the individuals shown through a variety of questions such as; is this a female face you find attractive, what’s a good mother face, and what is a short term and long term mate for the individual. The project was conducted using a computerized face program which contained 600 male and female faces. The results found for short term mates that the faces were much more feminine than in the long term relationships.

Preston Vasquez

RESEARCH

Preston Vasquez took two shapes called the ellipse and the hyperbola; the ellipse is the set of all points in space that is a constant sum from two fixed points and the hyperbola is the constant difference between two points. Results of testing and research created two other shapes from the original two. These two shapes were the Apollonius Circle and the Cassini Oval. He was able to find that every circle that passes through the foci are orthogonal (they intersect at a right angle).

ENDORSEMENT

Zachary Quintero

Zachary Quintero has a big advantage over other undergraduates who are pursuing graduate school. He has earned a research endorsement stamp to be placed on his diploma for his research on the concept of a Universal Basic Income. “The UBI would not require the individual to work to receive it and the amount of payment would not be based on your income,” said Quintero. He said the concept would be beneficial because it would reduce the cost of administering welfare. “You wouldn’t have to pay people to audit incomes, enroll eligible individuals, and it preserves the incentive to work by providing the benefit to all citizens,” said Quintero. He said he wrote the paper not only because it was an interesting topic, but he also wrote it because basic income could provide an answer for the problems we are facing with welfare. “I think reading my paper could enlighten others as to why a Universal Basic Income is a relevant and viable idea for addressing several big problems we face as a nation,” said Quintero.

Maggie Wilson Maggie Wilson’s research endorsement project is titled “Dualistic Opportunities: Feminine Beauty and Agency of Women in the Hebrew Bible.” For ths project, she asked the question of whether or not beauty is important in the Bible. In order to do this, she did a structural analysis of Hebrew narratives about women who are said to be beautiful. She looked at how beauty functioned in the narratives of women like Bathsheba and Esther. She found that beauty prompts desire and action, and that there is a common narrative structure that is observable throughout the Hebrew Bible.
