Cafeteria Redesign by Britton Brewer

This fall, students returned to USAO to find a newly designed cafeteria. The cafeteria area has not been remodeled since the late 1990s. “It was just time for an update,” said General Manager Tammy Warner. The floor plan has taken it from a cafeteria feel to more of a restaurant type of environment. Although the

food has not changed, according to Warner, the layout allows them to offer a greater variety of options to the students. Students have reacted “very well,” said Warner, “they walk in and just say, ‘Wow.’” “I like it! It’s a lot better,” said sophomore sociology major Kali Cook. Freshman elementary education major

Sarah Tibbett, “I really like how everything is set up. It’s very walkthrough friendly.” Something does seem to be missing, however, from last year. There are no more trays. “It is better for the environment,” Warner said. People have asked about the trays, but there have been no real complaints, according to Warner.

“Definitely need to bring back the trays and get better food. I’ve been in several times and could not stomach the foul food or handle the blandness. I can deal with no trays as long as we start getting good food.”

WE HEAR YA!

-Keely Daniel

“It’s such a shame USAO recently signed a 10 year contract with Sodexo.. Sigh.. If enough people complain to corporate then something might be done”

-Nathan Samples

“Not having trays is a way for Sodexo to try and save money. They think the less you can carry the less you will eat…Stop being dodgy Sodexo and bring back the trays.”

-Scott Parkinson

“Are the students aware of how much butter is poured into the rice or how specific food talked up to be fresh is not? Wait, that’s just the beginning, but more should be revealed as one most certainly deserves the right to know the extent of the damage that their body is undergoing through the digestion of such dismissal produce.”

Shoot Me An E-Mail Everything you need to know about your student e-mail account after graduation by Jake McGuire

The graduates of the fall of 2013 may be leaving USAO to pursue a profession but they certainly won’t be out of the loop come January. If students want to stay connected to all things on campus they can sign up for an alumni e-mail account, free from the university. Every student at USAO is given a free student e-mail account that remains active during their time in college. This e-mail is how they contacted their professors, learned about new scholarship opportunities and helped their school experience run smoothly. However, all students in the graduating class will no longer have access to their student e-mails come graduation. That is where the university suggests taking advantage of the alumni e-mail. Those interested in attaining a free account should visit www.usao.edu/alumni/free-usao-e-mail-address-alumni. The Network Administrator at USAO, Adeel Siddiqui urges all graduates to utilize the “Vacation Message” feature in his or her USAO e-mail ac-

count to let senders know your account is no longer active. Siddiqui also suggests if your Facebook account is registered with your student e-mail, you should change it to fix any unforeseen problems. For more information concerning your USAO alumni email account, please contact Adeel Siddiqui by phone at 405.574.1319 or by email at asiddiqui@usao.edu.

Coach Vinson Metcalf:

NOW STARRING AS USAO MEN’S BASKETBAL by Jake McGuire

Vinson Metcalf, USAO’s Head Men’s Basketball Coach, has been around basketball all of his life. From starting as a young player in Louisiana to eventually bagging a prestigious promotion. Shortly after graduating from Airline High School in Bossier City, LA, Metcalf attended Hill College, a junior college in Hillsboro, TX. There he was named on the All-Conference Team and earned an associate’s degree. He later transferred to the University of Idaho, a division one school in Moscow, ID. Metcalf suited up for the Vandals for about a year and half and then decided to come back home to take a year off. After the year was up he attended school at USAO’s conference rival, Oklahoma Baptist University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree. OBU would be the last team Metcalf played for but it would not be the last time he would step on a basketball court. “I finished my playing career at Oklahoma Baptist University,” Metcalf said. “I got interested in coaching, thought it would be something that I would be pretty good at.” Shortly after graduating from OBU, Metcalf was named the graduate assistant under legendary coach J.D. Barnett. “J. D. only lasted the first year I was in graduate school and then they brought in Tubby Smith, who kept me on as a graduate assistant” Metcalf said.

This fall, four graduating art students presented their Bachelor of Fine Art (BFA) shows. Bradley Burris, Kerye Hartzell, and Katie Jones presented their artwork together in November, and April Self presented her work in September. To receive a BFA, these students completed and extra 29 hours in advanced level studio courses, totaling to 83 art hours, along with the required 50 IDS hours.

BRADLEY BURRIS Bradley Burris is originally from Mustang, Oklahoma. He came to USAO after receiving an associates degree from Oklahoma City Community College. He will graduate with a BFA with an emphasis in photography.

Burris said there was a good turnout for the BFA show. “We [three BFAs] had a really good chemistry to where we each brought something different to the table and I think you can see our different inspirations and influences,” he said His concept for the BFA show was formed when he moved to Chickasha. He said on his ten-minute drive to campus he would pass old houses that were falling apart. “They were really beautiful, old, some of them turn of the century houses,” he said. He decided it was a good idea to photograph them before they were torn down. The photos used in the show were used for an HDR assignment in a class taught by Steve Brown, professor of art, he said, and after doing that project he figured out that was what he

wanted to do. “The inspirations keep pouring in,” Burris said. Burris’s interest in photography as a hobby began after high school, he explained. “I never thought I’d be doing is professionally,” he said. When he came to USAO and took the black and white photography classes and Steve Brown’s classes he began to take it more seriously and appreciated the medium more, he said. “Doing a little is better than doing too much,” said Burris. He said he wants to capture a single, powerful image with simple subjects and break the rule of thirds by placing them in the center of his photographs. “I may have my own interpretation about what my art is supposed to mean, but it’s the interpretation [of the viewer] that is the fun part about it,” he said.

Burris is currently interning at the advertising company Ackerman McQueen in their Oklahoma City office location as a rotating intern, he said. He plans to put in a resume with the company as well as continue recreational photography. He hasn’t completely shut out the idea of a masters degree, but he wants to make money and network with people who are already in the field. Bradley’s portfolio can be found on his personal website.

KERYE HARTZELL Kerye Hartzell is originally from Moore, Oklahoma. She will receive a BFA with an emphasis in metalsmithing and jewelry. Her concept for her jewelry pieces in the BFA show was natural forms in nature. She used a technique called fold forming, which

forces the copper to both take on texture and spread for an organic look, she said. With those two interests, she chose to create largescale flowers, leaves, lily pads and other natural forms and making them into jewelry for the show. “It’s jewelry that technical can be worn, but it’s more of a statement piece,” said Hartzell.

young. “As I got older, beads weren’t enough, I wasn’t entertained by those anymore,” she said. She then decided to make real, grown-up jewelry.

She studied overseas where her father was stationed at a university that was limited in options. While working at an arts and crafts center there she was able to find The nature that surrounds her is information on schools she could part of her inspiration when make go to in order to pursue a degree her jewelry. She said she also likes in jewelry making. “I didn’t want to look at Monet’s paintings. After graduation, she will move to Houston, Texas, where her husband currently works. She plans to search for any job she can find that is related to art that will fund her own artwork. She will have to purchase her own torch among other tools. “I think that the copper and metal stuff was totally worth my time and effort, and it’ll be worth the money in the long run,” Hartzell said. You can find her work on Etsy and her Facebook page.

KATIE JONES Katie Jones is originally from Norman, Oklahoma. She played on the USAO women’s soccer team her freshman year before leaving to try OU and making her way back to USAO to finish out. She will receive a BFA with an emphasis in graphic design. Jones said her concept for the BFA show was southwester icons

with an Andy Warhol feel. She used icons like boots, guitars, and beer bottles, among others for a southwestern theme. This idea began during printmaking, a required course for art majors, when she decided to do icons, she explained. “I ended up just really liking it, and I just kind of went with it,” she said.

Coming to USAO, she already declared a major and knew what she wanted to do, she said. Jones explained that after transferring for one year to OU she was happy with her decision to come back to USAO and finish here. “I feel like we learn a lot in the art department,” she said, “I feel like we get hands-on [experience] on a little bit of everything which is good.”

According to Jones, she is interested in color harmony. She likes At first, Jones said she didn’t unto put colors that wouldn’t normally be associated together and derstand why BFAs were required to take classes that did not relate use bright colors as well. directly to their chosen mediums. At first, Jones said, she wanted to “You wouldn’t think sculpture be a veterinarian, but decided she would be important for graphic design, bit it really is,” she said. did not want to see any animals die. Then, her mother suggested graphic design, she said. At first After finishing up her senior portfolio, making it through the Jones was unsure, but gave it a BFA show, and completing her try. “I was kind of intimidated classes, Jones said she is excited. by Photoshop and all those pro“I can finally breathe, I feel acgrams,” she said. Jones’s work can be viewed on her Facebook page at.

APRIL SELF April Self is originally from Mannford, Oklahoma. She will receive a BFA with an emphasis in photography. Self ’s BFA show, “Self Image”, was held in September, separately from the other BFA graduates. The concept she chose for her show was self-image.

“I chose photography because I fell in love with it,” she said, “I am fascinated with the ability to catch a moment in time.”

After graduation, Self plans to find a job as an art teacher in the public school system. Also, Self currently has her own photography business called Self Image for which she takes most of her photos on nights, weekends, and during the summer.

She explained that self-image is something beautiful she can capture with her camera. Self said that she chose to use portraits because of her fascination with people and “how different and beautiful each and every person is.”

Self said that coming this far in her college career as well as being able to show her work in her own exhibit was exciting. “I have grown and evolved so much as an artist here at USAO,” she said. Self said she likes the small school atmosphere at USAO and that she can talk to her professors in person, one to one. Also, she said, she loves the education department where she was prepared for a career in art education.

After graduation, Jones plans to move back home and save up money before moving out on her own and applying to companies looking for graphic designers. She and a friend have also planned to work on their own graphic design business called White Porch Swing.
