“Who is this guy ?”

In the heart of the kayak fishing community, there’s been a whispering curiosity about the person behind USA Kayak Fishing Magazine. I’m a product of the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where my life’s narrative has been deeply entwined with the woods and waters that define this beautiful region. From a young age, angling was more than a pastime; it was a way of life, teaching me the ways of nature and fostering a profound appreciation for the outdoors. My journey led me to create this magazine as a platform to share the essence of kayak fishing and the intricacies of fishing techniques with like-minded enthusiasts. It’s a reflection of a lifelong commitment to celebrating and sharing the outdoors, aiming to connect our community through stories, experiences, and the mutual love for the tranquility and adventure that kayak fishing brings. As you flip through these pages, know that they’re penned by people who’ve paddled in your shoes, cast lines into the early morning mist, and cherishes the outdoors just as deeply as you do.

NORFOLK PRIVATEERS ROAD TO THE CHAMPIONSHIP

In the competitive world of kayak bass fishing, the Norfolk Privateers have emerged as a formidable force, clinching the prestigious Kayak Bass Fishing Team Series Championship. Founded in 2020 by Robert Brown, the team’s journey to the top reflects their skill, teamwork, and passion for the sport.

The Privateers’ story began in the Kayak Fishing League (KFL), where they first showcased their potential. The KFL format, centered around 1v1 matches, was a testing ground for the team. Over two years, the Privateers competed in 12 matches, claiming victory in 7. This impressive record set the stage for their future endeavors in the Kayak Bass Team (KBT) series.

With the shift to the KBT, the team adapted to a new format. Unlike the KFL’s 1v1 approach, the KBT’s structure is more team-oriented, with all teams in a division competing on the same body of water. Points are awarded based on standings in these head-tohead matches, with the top teams advancing to the championship.

The culmination of the Privateers’ effort was their championship win in Alabama. This victory was not just a testament to their fishing prowess but also to their strategic planning and knowledge of diverse water bodies. Throughout their journey, they fished in multiple states, including Pennsylvania, Florida, South Carolina, North Carolina, Maryland, and Delaware, gaining experience and insights that proved invaluable in the championship.

The Norfolk Privateers, under Robert Brown’s leadership, have not only etched their name in the history of kayak bass fishing but have also set a high bar for sportsmanship and skill in the sport. As they look to the future, their story serves as an inspiration for both aspiring and seasoned anglers in the dynamic and growing world of kayak fishing.

With their eyes set on defending their title and exploring new waters, the Privateers remain a team to watch in the coming seasons. Their journey from a promising team in the KFL to champions in the KBT is a remarkable tale of determination, skill, and the unifying power of sport.

The success of the Norfolk Privateers extends beyond the competitive realm, significantly impacting the kayak fishing community. Their achievements have not only raised the profile of the sport but also inspired a new generation of anglers. The team’s dedication to excellence and sportsmanship sets a benchmark for others to follow.

KAYAK BASS TEAM SERIES

The KBTS is currently an exhilarating 14-team organization, experiencing dynamic growth in both its team roster and organizational framework. Though a fresh addition to the kayak fishing realm, this series is quickly making waves, demonstrating immense potential to emerge as a leading force in the world of kayak fishing. With its rapid expansion and promising outlook, KBTS is on a thrilling trajectory toward prominence in this adventurous sport.

Moreover, the Privateers’ journey has highlighted the importance of conservation and respect for natural waterways. Their travels across various states and interactions with diverse ecosystems underscore the need for sustainable fishing practices. By leading through example, they have become advocates for environmental stewardship within the kayak fishing community.

Their story also underscores the value of teamwork and camaraderie in sports. The Privateers’ collective approach, blending individual talents and shared goals, demonstrates how collaboration can lead to extraordinary achievements. This spirit of unity extends to their interactions with other teams and the broader community, fostering a positive and environment.

“In the kayak world there is a lot of bickering and complaining. The more we can push the negativity out of our sport the higher the ceiling will be “

ROBERT BROWN

Q. How many years have you been fishing?

A. I have been fishing for 30 plus years with 4 of them as a pro.

Q. Who is Robert Brown?

A. I’m very straight forward, loyal friend, competitive and fun loving. I prefer fishing with friends over fishing alone. My fishing career up until this point has been exactly what it was meant to be; I’ve had success on every level (kayak bass fishing) and failures on every level from local to national. I’m constantly learning and trying to spread what I learn to friends and whomever wants to learn. I still believe the best is yet to come for myself as well as a lot of my peers and the journey getting there excites me the most!

Q. What kayak do you have and have you modified it?

A. I own a Bonafide SS127 that’s been significantly modified to enhance its functionality and convenience. It’s equipped with dual Garmin 93sv fish finders and Garmin’s advanced Live scope technology, providing me with a detailed view of the underwater environment. I’ve also installed a bow-mounted trolling motor, which gives me greater control and maneuverability on the water. For visibility during early morning or late evening trips, I’ve added built-in navigation lights and cockpit lights. To keep my devices charged, I’ve integrated USB connections throughout the kayak. Additionally, I’ve installed a PowerPole Micro, which is incredibly useful for maintaining position in shallow waters without anchoring. All these modifications are powered by two 100ah Enduro Power lithium batteries, ensuring that I have enough power for extended trips.

Robert Brown Pro Angler on the Norfolk Privateers fishing team. Robert Brown:

Q. Whats your most memorable moment from the Kayak Bass Team Series?

A. My most memorable moment on the way to the championship was not even my own accomplishment. We had to win our last 2 matches in order to tie for 1st place in our division with The Tarheel Lunkers. 1 of our last 2 matches was on the Lunkers home lake “Hyco”, in practice David Miller and I found an area in the very back of a creek that was 2-3’ deep with a milfoil flat. While in practice we didn’t catch anything on it we planned to start there with top water, our thinking was early in the morning they would slide up to feed on baitfish. Well tournament morning we followed that plan and I proceeded to watch David put up our limit (10 fish) himself. Love it when a plan comes together, and we won that match.

QQ. What challenges did you face in the team series tournament and how did you overcome them?

A. The biggest challenge was overcoming adversity: the kayak I used had not seen any time on the water and was just previously completed being rigged with a lot of electronics. I had my electronics battery fail, both my fish finders failed and the weight distribution on my yak was not perfected. The other big challenge was figuring out where I wanted to focus my fishing during the tournament because I caught fish in practice everywhere I practiced.

Q. What first got you into kayak fishing?

A A way to get off the bank without breaking my bank.

&A

“I have thoroughly enjoyed traveling throughout our east region and on to the national championship fishing new waters.”

CURT NEWSOME

Q. How many years have you been fishing?

A. I’ve been fishing for 30 years, and though I’ve only competed in tournaments for three of those years, I’ve managed to secure seven wins during this time.

Q. What got you into kayak fishing?

A Kayak fishing started for me as a way to fish one certain body of water, from there it grew to where I am now. This body of water wasn’t great for bank fishing and I didn’t have a boat. The trips there peaked my interest and my love for the sport grew from there.

Q. What one thing you wish you knew prior to this tournament?

A. Prefishing was during the week, I wish I knew how bad the boat traffic would get on a Saturday. Lake Guntersville boat traffic was a major issue for me and it seemed like I was avoiding boats as much as fishing.

QA &

Q. Whats your most memorable moment from the Kayak Bass Team Serries?

A. Knowing what was on the line in our last regional tournament on the Chickahominy river and grinding to post some quality fish. The pattern that I found prior to the tournament didn’t hold up but I was able to make some quick changes that really produced.

Q. Whats your most memorable moment from the Kayak Bass Team Serries?

A. If I can get away with it l like to power fish with a moving bait. Ideally I prefer to catch fish on a swim jig or bladed jig. I am completely confident year round just breaking down water with my electronics and throwing a shakey head or finesse presentation to get bites.

TRAVIS BELCHER

Q. How many years have you been fishing?

A. I have been fishing for 25 plus years with almost 10 of them as a pro.

Q. Who got you into fishing?

A I began fishing with my father from a very young age, as soon as I was able to hold a fishing rod. As I grew older and could make my own choices, I participated in fishing tournaments alongside him. We never missed an opportunity to fish, regardless of the season. Whether it was the middle of winter, braving the cold for ice fishing and drilling holes across various lakes, or exploring the lakes and rivers throughout Ohio, we pursued a wide variety of fish species together.

Q. What first got you into kayak fishing?

A. When I was in college I couldn’t have a boat and I wanted to get on the water to fish more so I got a kayak.

Q.What kayak do you use and how many tournaments have you won?

A. I currently fish from a Hobie Pro Angler 12 and have won fifteen tournaments.

Q.What has fishing tought you throughtout the years?

A. Fishing has taught me valuable life lessons and played a significant role in shaping who I am, as my dad used to say. He would tell me during our fishing trips, especially on days when the fish weren’t biting, that this is much like life. There are moments in life that suck, where you feel like giving up, but just like fishing, all it takes is one good moment to turn things around. That one successful catch can make you forget all the challenging times, making it all worthwhile. This philosophy is something I apply to every aspect of life; when things are tough and bring you down, just keep going.

14 USA KAYAK FISHING MAGAZINE
Travis Belcher Pro Angler on the Norfolk Privateers fishing team. Travis Belcher demonstrating skipping a swim jig from his Hobie Pro Angler 12. This is just one of the techniques he used.

Q. Whats your most memorable moment from the Kayak Bass Team Serries?

A. This season I would say it was our first match of the year on lake mackintosh in North Carolina where i’ve never fished before. I arrived a day early to get some practice in and prefished. In 1 day I found a pattern, and locations where others hadn’t looked. I then spent the night in my truck parked in a walmart parking lot. The next morning I was on fish right away, calling my shots all day, fishing my favorite styles, and out scored everyone. I even caught big fish and set the mark for us that season.

Q. what challenges did you face in the team series tournament and how did you overcome them?

A. Breaking down this large of a lake, finding a pattern, and getting everyone else dialed in. We did this by using each other’s strengths and style of fishing to breakdown the lake and seeing who can produce the best results. We then searched to find more areas around the lake that fit those key elements and produced the win.

Q&A

Q. what would you like the readers to know?

A. Throughout my years of angling, I’ve gained extensive experience, starting with the Kayak Bass Fishing (KBF) Opens and then participating in the Buckeye Kayak Fishing Trail in Ohio. More recently, I’ve been fishing in Virginia with the Privateers, competing up and down the East Coast in both the Hobie Bass Series and the B.A.S.S Series. My ultimate ambition is to turn my passion for fishing into a lifelong career. I aspire not only to continue my own journey in competitive fishing but also to guide others into the world of fishing. My hope is to positively impact their lives through the joys and lessons that come with this sport.

RAY MONTES

Q. How many years have you been fishing?

A. I have been fishing for 19 years.

Q. What got you into kayak fishing?

A. To tell you the truth, I spent most of my time fishing off piers and when Hurricane Isabel hit Virginia, all the piers in the area got wiped out, I needed an alternative way to get on the water that didn’t involve having a boat, so I started looking at kayaks….. the rest is history.

Q. What one thing you wish you knew prior to this tournament?

A. Even when the water temperature was low ( high 50s) that the morning the shallow grass bite was going to be hot!

Q. What kayak do you use and how many tournaments have you won?

A. I use the Wilderness System Recon 120 and with it have won several tournaments on the local level.

Q. What has fishing taught you throughout the years?

A. To distinguish myself from other anglers, I focus primarily on minimalism and adaptability. Unlike many who bring an extensive array of tackle on tournament days, I opt for a lighter approach. During practice sessions, I experiment with a variety of options to gauge the fishes’ preferences. This strategy led me to discover the effectiveness of top-water techniques for both quantity and size of catches. Specifically, I found success with a Z-Man Toad, skillfully used atop grass and beneath docks, offering a subtle yet expansive coverage. Additionally, a weighted wacky rigged Senko serves as my backup, effectively complementing my primary choice. For areas around riprap and bridges, I incorporate the use of a square bill. This combination of a streamlined kit and strategic choices sets me apart in the competitive angling scene.

16 USA KAYAK FISHING MAGAZINE
Ray Montes Norfolk Privateers fishing team member.

Q. Whats your most memorable moment from the Kayak Bass Team Serries?

A. The championship day had just begun, with only the first 30 minutes having elapsed. This critical period was marked by an intense focus on leveraging the pattern that had been successfully identified and utilized over the past two days. The morning bite, a crucial time for any angler, was unfolding just as anticipated. This consistency in the pattern was not only reassuring but also fruitful, as it swiftly led us to reach our limit. The early success in these initial minutes set a positive and hopeful tone for the rest of the day, as the team navigated the challenges of the championship with skill and a well-executed strategy.

Q. what challenges did you face in the team series tournament and how did you overcome them?

A. Biggest challenge was avoiding the areas that your trying to save for tournament day and to stick with the game plan that you came up with during the first few days of practice and always add on different clues that find along the way.

Q&A

Q. where do you see the sport of Kayak Fishing heading?

A. I’ve been noticing a trend on kayaks being shorter and wider because of being pedal driven or motors being added on, I would love to see it go back to longer and a little bit slimmer, there are only a handful “fishing kayaks” out there today that are paddle worthy, there’s a lot of anglers out there who get stuck out in the water whose battery died or their pedals broke, then they are stuck a few miles away from where they started and they have a barge to paddle back and let’s face it, im going to guess that 75% of kayak anglers have a motor or pedal drive have never actually learn how to properly maximize paddling efficency.

Q. How many years have you been fishing?

A. I have been fishing for 20 years with 5 of those as a professional.

Q. What got you into kayak fishing?

A Access to restricted lakes, particularly those with limitations on horsepower or designated as electric-only. Often less-trafficked bodies of water offer a better fishing experience, free from the disturbance of larger, motor-powered boats.

Q. What one thing you wish you knew prior to this tournament?

A. One thing I wish I had known before this tournament is the specific profile of bait that the fish wanted.

Q.What kayak do you use and how many tournaments have you won?

A. I use the Hobie Pro Angler 14 with the 360 drive and have 15 1st place wins.

Q. Whats your most memorable moment from the Kayak Bass Team Serries?

A. I am currently active duty in the United States Navy with almost 21 years of service. I am originally from Folkston Georgia where I have been fishing since I was a young boy. I started tournament fishing in 2019 and switched to kayak tournaments in 2021. I have 15 1st place wins, 2, 2nd place wins and 4, 3rd place wins. I love trying new techniques to further strengthen myself as an angler. But I would have to say I love a good top water bite. I am drawn to Kayak fishing tournaments because I like the fact that I can catch the fish, take a photo and immediately release it. I hate seeing trophy bass floating on the surface after a tournament, I want this sport to continue on so that one day our children will have the chance to spend all their money and stay broke chasing fish on the trails

Q. what challenges did you face in the team series tournament and how did you overcome them?

A. Some of the challenges I encountered during the tournament included losing my Costa sunglasses, misplacing my Spro glide bait, breaking a Duckett Black Ice rod, and sustaining bruised ribs. Despite these setbacks, I focused on maintaining a positive mindset and continued to cast diligently.

Q. where do you see the sport of Kayak Fishing heading?

A. In the future, I envision kayak fishing evolving to include more trails catering to both individual anglers and team formats.

Q. How many years have you been fishing?

Craig Brashears: “ Most everything I have accomplished has been with help from my good friends and sponsors.” QA &

A. I’ve been fishing for 7 Years from a Kayak and been on Pro Staff for 6 of those seven years.

Q. What got you into kayak fishing?

A I guess it was the cost at the beginning, and the ability to fish in places you can’t get a boat or bank fish.

Q. What one thing you wish you knew prior to this tournament?

A. What everyone meant by there’s a lot of grass at Guntersville.

Q. What are some challenges you faced in this tournament, and how did you overcome them?

A. My biggest challenge was never fishing Lake Guntersville, figuring out where to fish because I did not have a lot of experience fishing grass. I found a spot that I felt comfortable fishing and that fit my style of fishing, found some fish and the rest is history.

Q. How do you see kayak fishing evolving in the next few years?

A. Really the only thing I can see coming is bigger sponsors for the kayak tournament trails allowing for more money and bigger and better opportunities for kayak anglers.

Q. What’s Your Most Memorable Moment On The Water on the way to the championship?

A. Watching my teammates make it happen to get us to the championship. They pulled out some amazing wins.

Q. What do you want people to know about you?

What are fishermen doing when the days are short, and the water is cold? Though you may not be on the water this winter, the fishing line and tackle from last summers ‘almost great cast’ may still be hanging there. Odds are if we don’t get it, something will. Every year herons, egrets, waterfowl, many other birds, and wildlife get tangled up in the fishing line that we unintentionally left behind.

We’ve all done it; cast, snag, broken line, and on to new tackle. Even if you attempt to retrieve your lost lure, finding it amongst the lush vegetation of summer can be difficult. And that’s the beauty of winter. Before spring begins to bloom, take your boat out looking for tackle tangled along the shore. With many trees and shrubs dropping their leaves, the bright colors of tackle really shine and stick out against that grey winter sky. On a low tide, put on your waders and walk the shoreline where that one stump always catches your favorite spinner bait. Not only can you find a few good re-usable lures, but the wildlife is beyond thankful.

If you happen to see wildlife tangled in fishing line, please report it to your local animal control or a wildlife rescue organization. If you are recreating on public lands and see fishing line, litter, or other hazards to wildlife, and you don’t have the capability to retrieve it, visit the park office or call the land manager. Winter may leave you dreaming of warmer days on the lake, but there is plenty we can all do now to help wildlife and you may even find that one lure you wish you never lost.

14 REASONS WHY with WENDELL FISHING

Here’s an overview of the ‘Wendell Fishing’ video, created to guide you in trouble shooting your fish finder for the best possible image quality.

1.Interference

Wendell mentioned that wiring the fish finder directly to the battery, preferably with an inline fuse, significantly reduces interference. He warned about potential issues when sharing the same frequency with nearby boats, particularly in close-range fishing scenarios.

2. Low Voltage

He stressed the importance of a fully charged power source, whether it’s the main boat battery or a separate one. Wendell recommended a dedicated battery like the Nocqua Pro during high power demands, like those from large screen fish finders.

3. Transducer Placement

According to Wendell, ensuring that the transducer is mounted parallel to the water surface and level is crucial for accurate readings, especially in kayaks where movement can affect positioning.

4.Choosing Wire Gauge

Wendell advised using the correct gauge of marine-grade wire for connecting the fish finder to the battery, emphasizing that marine-grade cables resist oxidation and corrosion.

5. Transducer Mounting

He highlighted the impact of a DIY transducer mount, advising that stability is key to avoid vibration interference.

6.Scanning Speed

Wendell advised using the correct gauge of marine-grade wire for connecting the fish finder to the battery, emphasizing that marine-grade cables resist oxidation and corrosion.

7.Contrast & Sensitivity

He noted the importance of adjusting these settings according to depth and bottom hardness, explaining how these tweaks can significantly enhance image quality.

8.Software Updates

Wendell reminded us to regularly check for firmware updates on the manufacturer’s website to ensure optimal performance of the fish finder.

9.Transducer Cable

He advised inspecting the cable for any kinks, cuts, or damage, particularly after prolonged storage, as these can be detrimental to the device’s functionality

11.Surface Clutter

He explained that surface clutter, often caused by waves, bubbles, or algae, can be filtered out by adjusting the sensitivity settings on the fish finder.

13.Watertight Seal

He shared that water intrusion in the display unit, potentially due to a compromised seal, can cause significant malfunctions and should be addressed immediately, especially if under warranty.

10.Addressing Corrosion

Wendell mentioned checking for corrosion at crucial connection points, suggesting that regular cleaning with sandpaper or terminal cleaner can mitigate this issue.

12.Clean the Transducer

Wendell emphasized the need for regular cleaning of the transducer, especially if the boat is kept in water, to prevent debris and algae from hindering its performance.

14. Matching Transducer

Finally, Wendell advised ensuring that the transducer type matches the fish finder’s capabilities, especially when using specialized sonar types like CHIRP or dual frequency.
