Earth Day every day for DeCA
For the Defense Commissary Agency, Earth Day, April 22, isn’t a one-day event.
Since 2005, commissaries have recycled or diverted almost 1.6 billion pounds of waste from landfills all around the world. DeCA’s environmental management system is the framework that helps the agency achieve its environmental goals through control of its operations.
What’s pint-sized, wears purple and is tough enough to meet the challenges of a military upbringing? Military brats!
On April 18, the Army & Air Force Exchange Service at Camp Zama will celebrate Purple Up Day, a worldwide recognition of the strength and sacrifice of military children, by offering free treats to any child who wears purple to participating Exchange restaurants.
“With frequent moves, parental deployments and an ever-changing peer group, being a military brat can be difficult,” said Exchange General Manager Gloria Sylvia. “The resiliency of military children amid such challenges is an inspiration, and the Camp Zama Exchange salutes their service on Purple Up Day.” Any child 18 years old or younger who wears purple is eligible to receive a free treat while supplies last.
Treats vary by location and may come in the form of a side, fountain drink, dessert or other item. Offer valid April 18 only. Purple Up Day is held annually during Month of the Military Child, which recognizes the contributions of Warfighters’ children to the armed forces community.
The color purple symbolizes the combined colors of all military branches: Army green, Navy blue, Marine red, Coast Guard blue and Air Force blue. For more information about this event, or to learn about events coming to the Camp Zama Exchange for Month of the Military, call 214-261-2103.

Over the last 13 years, DeCA has recycled almost 1.4 billion pounds of cardboard alone. The agency also recycles plastic, office paper, food donations, organics (fruits and vegetables), fats and bones, kitchen grease, metal, wood and pallets.
During 2017, DeCA diverted 134 million pounds of material from reaching landfills. The agency recycled over 114 million pounds of cardboard, over 3.6 million pounds of plastic, more than 250,000 pounds of office paper, over 300,000 pounds of metal, over 400,000 pounds of wood and over 5.6 million pounds of pallets. DeCA has recycled more than 1.2 million pounds of bones and fats, almost 12,000 pounds of kitchen grease and recovered nearly 3.5 million pounds of organic products. Customers can purchase “green” products considered safe for the environment.
In its stock assortment, DeCA carries organically grown fruits and vegetables, energy-saving compact fluorescent and LED light bulbs, high-efficiency laundry products and environmentally friendly cleaning products. Reusable shopping bags can also be purchased at the commissary.
