2016-2017 ANNUAL REPORT

A YEAR OF GRATITUDE: Grateful for your generosity, we’re ready for the next half-century Dear Friends, We are grateful for the generosity of good friends like you every year, but especially in 2016-17, the fiftieth anniversary of Ursuline College’s move to Pepper Pike. It was a year of gratitude a half-century in the making, focused on our students today and rich memories of our graduates past. For our year-long celebration, grant support from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture enabled us to offer a series of public cultural events including gallery exhibitions, a panel discussion about the architecture of our campus, and a performance of the writings of Anne Frank and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., both born in 1929. Students from our Historic Preservation program created “Designing Ursuline,” an exhibition of archival treasures from the College and motherhouse, and hosted an opening reception for which they wore period clothing from our Historic Costume Study Collection. In April, our celebration took a glitzy turn when 325 alumnae and friends of Ursuline College turned out for Come Fly With Us, a gala that raised more than $100,000 for student scholarships! Please see pages 9-11 for the list of generous gala supporters. Thank you to all who joined us for our fiftieth anniversary events and shared your gifts for today! In this report you will read about generous grants from Eaton Corporation (page 3) and the Cleveland Foundation (page 4). We thank The KeyBank Foundation, also, for a grant that enabled us to recruit our first two Faculty Diversity Fellows this past year. Dr. Kristie Williams and Dr. Lisa Brown have been pursuing meaningful teaching and research and have been a real inspiration for our students. The year brought opportunities for academic growth in other areas too. We launched a revised core curriculum, which incorporates the teachings of St. Angela Merici in a 21st-century context. We introduced new programs for Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioners and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners, new agreements with community colleges, and new partnerships with Duquesne and Catholic universities for the study of pharmacy and law 2

After helping to plant 5,000 daffodil bulbs, President Sister Christine De Vinne, OSU, PhD, accepted a proclamation from Pepper Pike Mayor Richard Bain in October 2016. The document proclaims the traffic circle at Lander Road and Fairmount and Gates Mills boulevards “Ursuline College Circle,” in recognition of the 50th anniversary of the College’s move to Pepper Pike.

respectively. Overseeing these initiatives is our new Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Kathryn M. LaFontana, who joined us last summer after a distinguished term at College of New Rochelle in New York. As 2016-17 came to a close, gratitude for our rich past provided the foundation for our future. A new strategic plan, designed with the input of a variety of students, staff, faculty, trustees, and friends both on and off campus, re-affirms our women’s focus, commits us to bold marketing initiatives, and calls for some exciting events promoting women’s leadership. Strong in our mission, we begin the next half-century of transforming students for service, leadership, and professional excellence.

Christine De Vinne, OSU ’73, Ph.D. President

PREPARING TO LEAD: Eaton grant helps first generation students succeed Imagine being the first member of your family to attend college. Where do you turn for advice on managing your time, studying effectively for exams, or choosing courses? Thanks to a grant from the Eaton Corporation Charitable Fund, Ursuline’s first generation students can turn to LEAD advisors for one-on-one mentoring, group workshops and other activities that foster success in their first year of college. LEAD, which stands for Leading to Excellence in the Academic Domain, is an academic support program that also provides students with a $450 textbook voucher for each semester of their first year.

Grateful For our

CORPORATE SUPPORTERS “We are so grateful to Eaton for seeing the value in our efforts to ensure success for first generation students,” said Richard J. Konisiewicz, the College’s vice president for institutional advancement. “We know that LEAD is effective and we know that earning an Ursuline degree can open many doors of opportunity for our students.”

Sister Virginia DeVinne, OSU ’72, meets with first generation students regularly throughout their first year of college.

Taras G. Szmagala, Jr., Eaton’s senior vice president, public and community affairs and corporate communications, said, “We’re really impressed with Ursuline’s commitment to first generation students. Their program works, and we hope some of their students might consider joining our team after they graduate.” The LEAD program was developed 10 years ago by Sister Virginia DeVinne, OSU, associate director of the Ursuline Resources for Success in Academics program. “We know from national studies and our own experience of administering this program that first-generation students are less likely than students

who have a parent with a college degree to graduate from college,” Sister DeVinne said. “Often these students are not prepared for the academic rigors of a four-year college. They do not always feel comfortable seeking academic and social support on campus and do not realize the importance of joining extra-curricular activities. Another roadblock for them can be a lack of understanding the connection between career goals and educational requirements. Fortunately, we also know that first-generation students who complete the LEAD program their first year significantly increase their likelihood of returning sophomore year and graduating.”

OPENING DOORS: Cleveland Foundation grant funds new pre-nursing program While Northeast Ohio faces a critical shortage of nurses, some would-be nurses graduate from the region’s high schools every year needing additional instruction and coaching to prepare for the rigors of nursing school. To address the nursing shortage, open doors of opportunity to prospective nurses, and help diversify the region’s nursing workforce, the Cleveland Foundation’s board of directors in spring 2017 approved a $147,734 grant to fund an innovative prenursing program at Ursuline College’s Breen School of Nursing. This new program is now providing academic, social and financial support to the first cohort of students who are spending a year preparing to transition into the Bachelor of Science in nursing (BSN) program.

Foundation program officer. “The Cleveland Foundation is pleased to partner with Ursuline College on this holistic approach to help fill the nursing shortage in our community.” Ursuline President Sister Christine De Vinne, OSU, PhD, said “STTEP-UP is helping to close academic gaps and prepare more students to serve as competent, compassionate nurses in the Ursuline tradition.” The Breen School of Nursing graduates approximately 100 students annually with the bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree. In recent years, 100 percent of Breen graduates have entered the nursing profession post licensure and the current first-try passage rate for the licensure exam is 97%.

STTEP-UP students came to campus during summer 2017 to prepare for college. They met in a “speed dating” format with alumnae, including 2016 graduate Britani Hayes, RN, to learn about their future career.

Titled STTEP-UP, for Scholastic Tools & Teams for Educational Performance Ursuline Pre-nursing, the program “addresses the most common barriers to success in nursing school for underrepresented groups and provides the opportunity and resources needed to be successful,” said Kimalon Meriweather, Cleveland

ETCHED ON HER HEART: Monica Thomas ‘70 feels a duty to pay it forward wonderful things, there were a lot of people and institutions along the way who helped get us where we are. Ursuline certainly was one of those places for me.” Although much has changed at the College since Thomas was class president, today’s Ursuline students rely on the generosity of alumnae and friends of the college every bit as much as Thomas and her classmates did.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in English and education at Ursuline College in 1970, Monica (Roman) Thomas married, raised a family and pursued fulfilling career experiences, first in education and later as a small-business owner and professional photographer. Over the years, she has consistently given back to Ursuline College through gifts to the Annual Fund. Asked what motivates her to support the College, Thomas replied, “It really is because of Ursuline that I have been able to do many of the things I’ve done. Ursuline College itself and the wonderful sisters who were there really helped form who I became. I’m grateful to them because I learned great leadership there.”

“I feel it’s our duty as alums to help those people who follow behind us and who we hope will go on to do marvelous things and change the world. We set the legacy up for them and I like to think I’m paying it forward,” she said. “When you go to a college like Ursuline, it etches a little spot in your heart. Giving to the Annual Fund is at least something I can do to keep that connection, keep that heart string going.” Thomas has been recognized for her leadership in nonprofit fundraising, particularly for some of Northeast

Ohio’s most significant Catholic organizations. Her involvement with the Malachi Center, West Side Catholic Center, the Museum of Divine Statues, Cleveland Central Catholic, Magnificat and Saint Ignatius high schools, and other groups has taught her the importance of consistent, annual fund support of nonprofits.

Grateful For our

INDIVIDUAL SUPPORTERS “Yearly budgets are based on that which happened in the year before. There are always going to be new expenses and new endeavors but unless you have a consistent base of donors, you really can’t project much into the future. That’s why consistency is so important,” she said.

Thomas said her parents instilled in her this strong sense of gratitude. “I’ve never forgotten where I came from and I try to remember the people who helped get me where I ended up. I think it’s very important that we remember that even if we go on to do 5

Highlights of the Year KeyBank Foundation grant funds faculty diversity fellows Ursuline appointed its first two faculty diversity fellows, thanks to a generous grant from the KeyBank Foundation. Kristie M. Williams (right), who recently completed a Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision at the University of Akron, and Lisa R. Brown (far right), who recently completed a Ph.D. in adult education, learning, and organization development at University of Georgia, each joined the faculty for two overlapping semesters. “At Ursuline College, we are committed to increasing the diversity of our faculty and we are very grateful that KeyBank Foundation embraced this

goal and provided the funding that allowed us to bring Dr. Williams and Dr. Brown on board in this distinguished new role,” President Sister Christine De Vinne, OSU, Ph.D., said.

Partnerships with Duquesne and Catholic universities signed Ursuline leaders last summer signed partnership agreements with Duquesne University School of Pharmacy and The Catholic University of America’s Columbus School of Law for students’ direct admission into these graduate programs after three years of successful study at Ursuline. “We are delighted to be able to offer students these opportunities to begin their college career with us, in a women-focused, supportive environment, and then move into these rigorous, graduate programs well prepared to succeed,” Sister Christine said. Performance of Anne Frank, Martin Luther King, Jr. moved audience Letters from Anne and Martin, staged by professional actors from The Anne Frank Center for Mutual Respect, captivated some 200 audience members at the College’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. observance in 2017. Actors Wesli Spence and Alexandra Gellner brought their characters to life with passion, as their alternating voices illustrated parallels in the thinking, faith and life experiences of the two human rights icons, both born in 1929. This free, public event, was sponsored by the Anne Frank Moral Courage Project and the Maltz Museum of Jewish Heritage. Financial support came from Albert and Audrey Ratner, the Riverbend Fund, the Sisters of Charity Foundation, Third Federal Foundation and the residents of Cuyahoga County through a public grant from Cuyahoga Arts & Culture. 6

In Pictures Nursing dean leads Ohio Board of Nursing Dr. Patricia A. Sharpnack, dean and Strawbridge professor of Ursuline’s Breen School of Nursing, was elected president of the Ohio Board of Nursing by her board colleagues in November 2016. “I am committed to the effective regulation of nursing education and practice to protect the public,” said Dr. Sharpnack, a 1984 Ursuline graduate.

New vice president for academic affairs appointed Kathryn M. LaFontana, Ph.D., was appointed vice president for academic affairs. She assumed office in July 2017. Dr. LaFontana came to Ursuline from The College of New Rochelle in New York. “Dr. LaFontana brings a breadth of experience in academia, including more than 16 years as a faculty member and well-published researcher in psychology, and more than 15 years as an administrator in roles of increasing responsibility. Her background makes her an ideal fit for our needs at Ursuline,” said Sister Christine.

“Designing Ursuline” highlighted student experience at the College Historic Preservation students mined the archives of the College and motherhouse to curate the Wasmer Gallery exhibition Designing Ursuline, which opened in March 2017. The exhibition explored the architecture of the College’s five historic locations through photographs, maps and architectural plans and featured samples from the College’s Historic Costume Study Collection and artifacts including dance cards, nurse uniforms and class rings. “Ursuline’s five different campuses had completely different architectural styles but the commonality in all of them is the Ursuline Sisters, the women’s focus, the student focus and those ideals that have been carried on,” said student Clay Fellows. 7

2016-2017 Financial Summary During the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2017 Ursuline College continued to build on its strong financial foundation with total revenue of approximately $23 million offset by expenses of $22.5 million. Our students remain the largest source of revenue, accounting for 88% of all revenue on an operational basis through tuition, fees and room and board. Gifts, grants and investment income added an additional 9% and other income was 3% of the total. The majority of the expenses (86%) are spent directly on

our students through instruction, student services, academic support and auxiliary services (residence halls). The remaining 14% is spent on fund raising and management and general expenses, which is a favorable percentage as compared to industry standards. The endowment fund benefited from increased donations, the continuing bull market, and the steady leadership of the investment committee to end the year with its highest market value ever of $44,231,100.
